Fascinated by the shadows
in me,
the dark patches of soul
most shy from,
the caverns below
the gardens,
the mists that remain
when the rain has gone.
Here,
I am made whole again,
eternal spring of
immortal persuasion,
here is the source
of the life that comes
from mind to heart,
heart out to voice,
to fingertip,
to ink.
I am not the sun,
I am the shade
and the cool earth
it falls upon.

Take this moment, right now, and clear your mind of worry. Allow yourself these few brief blinks to breathe, in through your nose now, four seconds, hold it four seconds, then exhale for eight. Do this again. Then again. See the faces in your mind of those you love, see the places that feel like peace to you. Breathe deeper now, into the core of you. Smile, even if it’s coerced, even if it’s forced, for even fake smiles deliver the benefits. You deserve a moment of stillness, of hope unburdened by fear. Things will settle, things will pass, things will balance. Breathe.

Hard things crumble,
don’t you know by now,
solidity
is a false sense
of security.
Look at the trees
and how they sway,
roots deep below
the earth we borrow,
but in the storms
they dance.
Be the tree
and not the stone,
and if fire comes

Some are those that seek,
rise and wander out,
hands outstretched
like sleepwalking arms
into the unknown
of what’s next.
Spoken of as wild, these,
untethered
and wind carried,
spoken of as ghosts,
as things hardly worth
mentioning.
Others are those that stay,
nest themselves in the pieces
collected to comfort
their stillness,
spoken of as secure,
these, heads screwed on
straight.
Somewhere, in the unvarnished
mind of each,
there is a craving
for what the other has,
some that seek long for staying,
some that stay,
would trade all they’ve got
for one moment
of wild disappearance.
