There were clean cuts,
some I hardly felt,
there were precision
surgical removals
of the threads
from another’s
heart.

There were hack jobs,
butcherings with dull edge
and battered blade,
tearing and tugging
and scars that don’t fade
with others,
pieces left like sponges,
like scalpels
from surgeons forgetful
and untrained.

Some stick, some fade,
some grow roots,
burrow down deep
and know only
holding on.

We are forged
by what we
lose.
