Conflicting Values, Thanksgiving and Other Holidays

Thanksgiving and other family-oriented holidays of the season often bring conflicting values. Each value we seek to maximize, each individual factor in decision making, is like a single drop of water rushing out of a faucet. We only see the rushing stream. But slo-mo shows one drop at a time. Mindfulness is slo-mo, it slows the flow of thoughts and conflicting values down so we can see each one individually, one at a time, choose, make better decisions and enjoy the holidaze more.

Intentions help guide and sort conflicting values. More about that next time.

United Way Reading Pals

SteveL_readingpalspic Miami author, Dr. Steve Liebowitz and two of his reading pals explore “Rumble In The Jungle” by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz as part of The United Way’s Reading Pals Program which encourages children to read at an early age.

Steve thinks he gets more from the experience than the children do. “The children are four and amazing! “

Volunteer by reading to children

Become a ReadingPal, and join 200 volunteers reading to young children at pre-kindergarten classrooms in neighborhoods across Miami-Dade. Research shows that children who learn to read well at an early age will not only read more independently, but also achieve more in math, social studies and science, and are more likely to graduate high school and pursue higher education. Early literacy is a key strategy to success.

Created in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County Public Library Systems, Early Learning Coalition and The Children’s Movement – and through support provided by Carol and Barney Barnett – ReadingPals is a fun and meaningful way to provide our children with the best possible start in school and in life.

Instill a love of reading and enhance literacy opportunities

Anomalies

How many of the people burning things down in Ferguson and other places, voted? Burning businesses raises insurance rates; increased costs are then passed on, and so the burning ends up hurting the burners’ community again. This sort of ignorance is similar to ignoring the fact that more than 90% of the people killed by terrorists are Muslim. The aggrieved angry people, justified or not, are hurting themselves and their communities more than anyone else. There are better more effective ways, like voting. Look at the T Party.

Is There a Better Way?

“Tolerance for pain may be high, but it is not without limit. Eventually everyone begins to recognize, however dimly, that there must be a better way. The goal is a happy heart that beats in hope and does not pound in fear. The goal is awakening from the ego dream, not becoming happier within it.” – Course in Miracles

Sharing and Giving

Is sharing perhaps more meaningful than giving?

When you’ve discovered something really good – a restaurant, a song, a TV show or a book – don’t you want to share it? Isn’t that kind of sharing a gift? Devorah and The New Professionalism come in book form, which makes them easy to share, but they’re really full bodied experiences you’ll want to share. Enjoy an autographed first edition of Devorah, and also receive an autographed first edition of The New Professionalism, free, for $19.95, all-inclusive, and Harmony-Quest Publications will gift wrap and mail a copy of either book to the people on your holiday gift list, free, with your compliments so you can share.

People and Principles: Either/or or Both/and?

Many of the politicians just elected place principle above people. They appeal to our sense of legality, rules, codes, standards and of course, the Constitution (which neither they nor I have read). To these people and those that voted for them, principles are more important than families being torn apart, the unimaginable reality of 40 million Americans who are ‘food insecure’- without enough to eat, and wages so low that two jobs don’t provide enough.

Must it be either/or – either people or principles? Can’t it be both/and – both people and principles? Aren’t we creative and compassionate enough to both take care of people and honor our principles? Seems like we did in the past, can’t we do it again now?

American Democracy: Reality or Illusion?

Is democracy as it actually operates in the USA truth or illusion? It seems like democracy and evidence can be brought that it actually is a democracy. But here’s some evidence to consider on the other side. The turn-out in the last election was 36.4%. That means that in most cases slightly more than 18% – 19% ‘won’ the election. That means we are being governed by a minority, quite often a minority of those motivated enough or in some cases those fearful, ignorant and prejudiced enough to bother to turn out. Is this sort of minority rule democracy? There are numerous explanations for this phenomena, but until a true majority – 51% of all eligible voters – decides that these percentages are not a true democracy, nothing will be done and American Democracy will remain an illusion.

Fear As Spirit Tech

What do you do with fear? Ignore it? Push through it? What do you do when you’re afraid? Seen as Spirit Tech, fear is an opportunity to see the future and the unknown differently, to see our habitual ways of being in a new light, to open to greater possibilities and previously unimagined visions. Francis Halzen the physicist who invented the breakthrough Neutrino Telescope said, “Whenever we’ve found a new way to look at the universe, we never saw anything that we really expected. It was always a surprise. So now I cannot predict the future.”
