Adversity
Adversity can bring out the best or worst.
Understanding that no amount of rearranging the world will bring out the best, works best.
The most effective response to adversity – misunderstanding, pain and loss, is to claim our birthright and be more completely who we are; to share ourselves more fully.

The Shadow
Do you ever want what’s not good for you? Like a diabetic wants ice cream or chocolate? And, when you indulge, do you feel guilty or worse? I do. I try to have my cake and eat it too. I’m good most of the time. But every once in a while….
With ice cream and chocolate, once in a while suffices. But there are other things: attitudes, feelings and desires, where the pull is so great that once in a while seems not enough. Karl Young calls these our Shadow. Things we want, but shouldn’t want.
He’s says that instead of pushing them down, avoiding or denying them we should accept them as part of ourselves, understand, honor and embrace them. Yes! But easier said than done. For me, my Shadow aspects are so strong I fear if I get too close they will swallow me up, like a black hole. Mindfulness helps me embrace my Shadow.
Following Young’s advice, when I become aware of the dark attitudes, feelings and desires, I bless them, stay with them a while then let them go. That helps. I try to have my cake and eat it too.

Courage
The best way to be constantly awake is to be continuously thrown out of the nest. Be courageous! I’m being my own hero more often; pretending less and tamping down my own thoughts and feelings less; considering how and when to share them, but owning them first; respecting myself and my reality as a spiritual being having an earthly experience.
“Many are called, but few are chosen,” works better as, “All are called but few choose to listen.” I’m listening more often, letting go of old beliefs, walking away from drama, admitting when I’m wrong and setting more viable boundaries. Tough going through, but great on the other side! Try it, you’ll like it.

Love is Like Water
Water fills whatever hole it finds. It doesn’t say this ditch is too deep or this field too stony. Like water, love covers whatever it touches, renewing and restoring it. Most things break because they resist love’s flow instead of transforming. Love doesn’t ask if what it touches is worthy. Only ego does that. The more I let love flow, the more I have to love. How foolish it is to think withholding love will stop hurt. It’s just the opposite. Get out of the way! Let love flow! Thank you, Mark Nepo.

Spirit doesn’t know its being spiritual anymore than the wave knows its part of the ocean. But we can, and do know. For me, it’s when I’m grateful – for a glass of water, a wide-spreading tree, indoor plumbing, wagging dog tails, and a host of other things. How about you? Stop reading and think about what you’re grateful for and let the feelings remind you of your reality as spirit. Realize you can do this any time and anywhere and allow spirit – gratitude, compassion and sharing to fill your awareness.
