I don’t think luck comes into it much. I was recently speaking to an old acquaintance who used to work at the RSC and remembers his first season with them (and, as a total unknown just out of drama school, he was recruited because of his talent alone - unlike some other actors cast in big parts around then largely because they were the son or daughter of a big star or had other connections) - she said that Stratford was buzzing about his talent. She also said he was one of the nicest, politest actors she has ever worked with, which has probably helped a bit, as well - not being an arsehole can be a real career advantage for an actor.

I’ve heard the “very little range” accusation lobbed at Freeman a lot and I disagree. He’s a quiet, unshowy actor who follows the internal, Stanislavskian method of living the character’s emotions from within, rather than impersonating other people. If he looks like he’s just being himself in every part, IMO it’s because he makes the character’s thought processes and feelings so natural and believable. I don’t need him to look radically different in every part he’s in - I just need to feel 100% convinced by the character. Which I always am.

- Don’t often quote from comments in articles, but this was blackbroom talking about Martin Freeman in the Guardian’s review of Richard III, in response to an accusation that Martin had ‘limited talent’ and had gotten ‘lucky’ to be where he is now. (via geek-royalty)

Lovely to read this. Thanks for posting!

Even answered ?

These quotes are very telling. What is there to reexamine about holmes/Watson in the 21st century if not the potential for a more intimate relationship? Asked and *answered* in S4!

John “I punched the shit out of a guy and got arrested because he called Sherlock weird” Watson would NEVER forgive someone for hurting Sherlock, much less for nearly killing him.

One thing that abusive people do is try to convince their victims that their instincts are corrupted and inherently wrong and bad and that they need someone to guide them and control their behavior so that they don’t ruin their relationships.

That’s why Mary’s constantly belittling John’s reactions is important. Laughing at him when he’s angry with Sherlock in TEH and telling him that she likes Sherlock, then pressuring him to make up. Implying that John doesn’t understand what Sherlock needs in TSOT (she does this to Sherlock about John, too. First about getting out on a case during the wedding planning, then about John’s relationship with Major Sholto). Suggesting that John’s admiration of Sherlock is disproportionate in HLV. Asking John why he would offer to go help Kate and Isaac as if it’s a ridiculous suggestion, despite the fact that he’s a doctor and a soldier, so probably the best person near at hand.

Even scolding him for the moment he picked to discuss their reconciliation at Christmas with the Holmes family. He can’t choose the baby’s name. He doesn’t mow the lawn. Does she ever praise him? Does she ever show him any affection? Can he do one single thing right for her?

Yes. She’s particularly abusive in TAB – she openly belittles John as being useless on Sherlock’s cases in the scene where she appears in the black widow’s outfit. And she belittles Sherlock for being slow and not being the smart one. Even in the modern day scenes, she is belittling to everyone– making fun of Mycroft’s security, bringing up Sherlock reading John’s blog, then when she confronts John about the “I’m taking Mary home.” comment. Either she is showing her sociopath colors more and more, or Sherlock just SEES her, in his head, as abusive. (I say ‘either’ because I’m not sure if the modern day scenes were real or still in Sherlocks’ MP).

the-7-percent-solution:

I’m keen on the possibility that John “Pretty Damn Smart” Watson has deduced that Mary’s prime motivation for being with him is because of her past involvement with Moriarty. He knows her job was to keep John from Sherlock, a task worth her life. John tried reading the flash drive but, once again, the AGRA box was empty. She was bluffing and he had to counter her next move. With Sherlock in hospital for weeks and weeks, John had enough time to dwell and deduce on his own. He’d pretend he hadn’t try to read it. He’d welcome her back into his life, but he’d be careful not to use the words “i forgive you” because there really was no way he could ever do that. However, the greater good is at stake. If John leaves her and takes up with Sherlock, John knows Mary will not hesitate to kill them both. He’s seen to what lengths she’ll go to keep from losing the status quo. She must, for now, continue to believe nothing is amiss. Sherlock must remain in the dark for a little longer.

Dr Watson is smarter than he looks. Pretty damn smart.

Co-signed.

Nice.

Yes. I truly think so. So anxious for S4!
