Cover Reveal: Uriel's Fall

I've been talking about this for a little while now, but I finally have more news I can share. Tune in over the next few weeks and I'll have more information about my debut urban fantasy novel, Uriel's Fall,  which will be available in ebook and print from most etailers on July 25, 2014. (EEP!)

And I'm super, super excited today to share the cover for Uriel's Fall. It was created by the fabulously talented EDH Graphics. I absolutely fell in love with this when I saw it...

...

...
urielsfall_medium BlurbWhat's a corporate demon to do when the voice in her head is devouring her sanity from the inside out, and the hosts of heaven and hell would rather see her destroyed than surrender a power they shouldn't possess?

Ronnie has the job any entry-level angel or demon would sell their soul for—she's a retrieval analyst for the largest search engine in the world. Ubiquity is a joint initiative between heaven and hell. Because what better way to track all of humanity's secrets, both good and bad, than direct access to their web browsing habits.

She might appreciate the position a little more if a) she could remember anything about her life before she started working at Ubiquity, b) the damn voice in her head would just shut up already, and c) her boss wasn't a complete dickhead.

As she searches for the solutions to the first two issues, and hopes the third will work itself out in performance reviews, she uncovers more petty backstabbing than an episode of Real Housewives, and a conspiracy as old as Lucifer's descent from heaven. On top of all that, if she forgets the cover sheet on her TPS report one more time, she's absolutely going on final written warning.

Now Ronnie’s struggling to keep her sanity and job, and stop the voice in her head from stealing her life. She almost misses the boredom of data analysis at Ubiquity. Almost.
ExcerptI materialized from the ether, already anticipating the comfort of Lucifer's office in hell and being enveloped in the closest thing I recognized as feeling like home. His door was open when I got there, and I saw him at his desk so I pushed in with a brief announcing knock.

I exhaled in relief as his familiar aura seeped into me. As one of the three remaining originals, he had his own little corner of hell that was all his and no one else’s. Instead of being generic day to day blahness, it radiated the fact that he’d occupied it for millennia. As I got far enough inside to see the rest of the room, I froze, all coherent thought evaporating.

It’s not… Maybe? Mikkel?

Lucifer wasn’t alone. The stranger looked up, steel-blue eyes locking on mine. A few days growth of black stubble decorated his chin, and his mud-caked boots rested on Lucifer’s desk, the occasional flake dropping down to mar the shine. It wouldn’t scuff the oak finish—Lucifer liked his polished-until-it-was-almost-a-mirror wood finishes too much to let that happen, but it still had to be irritating the hell out of my mentor.

It wasn’t always easy to tell the difference between an angel and a demon—since technically we were all made from the same stuff, and just accomplished our goals differently. But a real angel. One served order instead of looking for the loopholes that allowed chaos, had a different aura. A smooth glow instead of a kaleidoscope of fractured light.

And the arrogant man with his feet on my boss’s desk was more distinctly angel than anyone I’d ever met. Something about the situation, on top of the last twenty-four hours of my bizarre life, amused me. Who was he? Angels in hell weren’t unheard of, but they disliked our methods enough that visits were rare. I stepped toward him. With dark hair, light eyes, and an obvious disdain for the most powerful demon in existence, he was sexy, and compelling, and—

If you’ll stop swooning, I can kill that fucker. Right here and now. Draw your sword.

Random Viewing Thoughts: Warehouse 13

When I'm not gaming or writing, I watch TV. Netflix and Amazon Prime are our frequent guests at home, because we dont' have cable. That means sometimes it takes a while for us to get to a series. It has to be available to stream. But it also means we can frequently watch entire seasons and series at once.

Or pick random movies. Whatever strikes our mood. And we tend to pick the less mainstream films.

And every once in a while I feel the desire to muse aloud about these shows and movies. Not really so much reviews as impressions--initial and long term--and thoughts.

If this works (working defined as it doesn't just sound like random gibberish), I'll make it a regular feature.

Saul Rubinek & Eddie McClintock courtesy of WikipediaWarehouse 13About six months ago, Amazon Prime started recommending this Warehouse 13 thing to us. And after going through Dexter, and The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones, we had no idea what to watch next that could even compare.
So I figured, "Meh. Let's give this a try." And let it kind of play in the background one night. Very first impressions, it wasn't bad. First episodes never nail the characters, and at least it wasn't Arrow (which, for the record, will probably never make it to a random viewing thoughts post. Not by me anyway.)
As the episodes ticked away, I was spending more and more time watching, and less time writing like I was supposed to be. It was lighthearted (sometimes I need a little of that, especially after marathoning something like Game of Thrones), it didn't take itself too seriously, and the character dynamics were... different. I won't say unique, that's not really a thing these days, but they certainly twisted the standard tropes of tough guy agents and everything else that goes along with a show with questionable fantastical elements.
And suddenly, we'd eaten through Season 3, and there was no more free Warehouse 13. EEP!
I can't even say where along the way I stopped thinking "Oh this is kind of fun and campy" and started thinking "OMG THE CHARACTERS I ADORE THEM!"
(I don't have a problem buying TV episodes or movies, so we didn't wait for seasons 4 & 5 to go free. We paid, and watched).
The series wound up this last week, with a very short Season 5. As the season started, I was reminded exactly why I feel in love with these quirky peoples. I was a little iffy on the episodes. Where all the arcs and development up to that point had felt smooth and natural, the characters made some drastic changes (okay, I thought they were drastic), that felt rushed. Reasonable conclusions, but still rushed.
And then last night, I got to watch the season finale. I thought "okay, no big deal" because I'm not a get choked up kind of person about TV characters. I'm not very good at hard core fandom.
And yet 15 minutes in, I was sniffling. Absolutely engrossed, choked up, and emotionally attached as I watched this series wind up and the characters find their endings and new beginnings.
Which, to me, is what makes a story. Not the story, because I'll be honest, the 'monster of the week' methodology is so overdone...
But the characters. The people who drive the tale forward, and make me feel for them, even if their situation is forced or contrived.
So...thoughts? Have you seen the show? No spoilers, please. Or if not, can you enjoy a film or TV show even if the plot or world building is a little less than there, as long as the characters draw you in? Or is plot/world everything?

Null & Devoid Short Story Available

SadChildNullAndDevoid
The Colors of the Mind
My upcoming NULL series, which begins with The Null & Devoid, features psychics, empaths, and rampant corporate espionage. Max and Taylor are caught in the middle of it all, and frequently getting paid to help with the spying.

Before I started the story, though, I pictured these two characters as children. I had to ask myself what brought them together. How does such a unique pair (he's an empath, and she's a null--someone who can't be 'read' by psychics or empaths), come together?

Tell me, if you could have any super power, what would it be?

New Hellish Short Story Available.

Once upon a time, I wrote short stories one after another, and let them snatch away snippets of my imagination and used them to explore a vast scope of the worlds and ideas floating in my brain.

Some of them even turned out pretty good. Over the years they've appeared in various publications, but the rights have since reverted to me. I don't want them gathering dust, so I'm putting them up on my website, one at a time, and hopefully other people will find something in them they enjoy.

The first one is called That Life Hasn't Done... . If you're a fan of the Venture Bros. at all (and I am), the quote might sound familiar. It's from Season 1, Tag Sale You're It (which by the way is the first episode I ever saw, and I absolutely fell in love with the show). And it's from The Monarch. "What can I do to this guy that life hasn't already?"

And really, that's about the only thing I can say for the poor demons in this story. So check it out if you've got a moment.

And while we're on the subject of quotes, I want to know your most memorable quotes from TV shows or movies. Even if they're not profound, or they're silly, whatever. Let us have them.

My Book Boyfriend Blog Hop

Welcome to My Book Boyfriend Blog Hop, and thank you to Harper A Brooks http://harperabrooks.wordpress.com & TF Walsh www.tfwalsh.com/blog for hosting this amazing event!
I have a new urban fantasy novel coming out in July (Uriel's Fall), and it just happens to feature one of my favorite book boyfriends ever. Am I allowed to say that about my own heroes? I hope so, because I do adore Michael. Not only is he a gentleman, and intelligent, and sexy, but he's also an archangel.

GiveawaysAnd keep reading, because at the end of the post, there are two giveaways. I'm offering a $10 Amazon Gift Card to one random commenter , and our fabulous hosts are giving away A signed HIS HAVEN paperback by Harper A. Brooks, signed CLOAKED IN FUR paperback by T.F. Walsh, and a $20 Amazon gift card to one random winner in the Rafflecoptor drawing below!

Also, visit all the other blogs on the linky list at the bottom of this post for more smexy book boyfriends, and a ton of chances to win!

Excerpt(In this scene, Michael is teaching the main character, Ronnie, the basics of sword fighting)
Michal's quiet tone wove into my thoughts instead of shattering them. “Concentrate on what belongs to you, what’s brushing your skin. The electricity in the air, not the physical.” The steady rhythm of his breathing was soothing. “Do you feel what I mean?”

“Yes.” I did. Intensely and vividly. I almost felt like I was in a trance. I couldn’t remember a time my thoughts had been so calm. I kept my attention on his words, and followed each instruction. I wasn’t sure how I was going to fight like this, but the experience was pleasant enough that I didn’t care.

It was too quiet. When had he stopped talking? The air shifted around me. It was so subtle I doubted I would have felt it normally. Like a light breeze caressing my skin. But being so in tune with my surroundings, it was as noticeable as a strong gale. Even as my eyes opened, my right arm shifted up to chest level, and my left moved to cover my gut. I was reacting before I could process my own movements, deflecting Michael’s blow with the larger blade, twisting under his arm, and coming to a stop with the wooden dagger resting at his stomach, blade just nudging his skin.

I’d done it, giddiness flowed through me. And then the rest of my world came into focus. One of his arms was still held captive above my head, blocked by my sword, and his free hand gripped my other wrist. His gaze locked on mine.

“Just like that.” His voice was barely a whisper.

I wanted to show I understood, but didn’t want to move. Every inch of me wanted to close the distance between us. To rest my hands on his still heaving chest. To see what it would be like to kiss him. Was I even allowed to do that? He was one of the holiest of holy. Was he above that kind of thing?

A is for Atlas

Welcome to the A-Z blogging challenge. Throughout the month of April, I'll be blogging about fantasy. Contemporary, urban, paranormal, traditional, any and all subgenre's. Oh, and how I think it might fit into the modern world. Once you're done here, make sure to check out the participant list for a ton more awesome sites to explore.

I almost kicked everything off with angel, but that seemed too easy, at least given that's my one of my favorite urban fantasy subjects. So instead, today, A is for Atlas. From Wikipedia: In Greek mythology, Atlas (/ˈætləs/; Ancient Greek: Ἄτλας) was the primordial Titan who held up the celestial sphere.

In other words, the guy who carried the world on his back.

Think about the ramifications of that. I'm not just thinking about the physical aspects of actually having a planet resting on your shoulders, but as much a metaphorical thing. The evils, the woes, the frustrations, the terrors. The good of the world as well. But think about how heavy that would have to be for one guy--Titan or not.

I figure after a couple millenia of that, it would start to drag a dude down. Especially as the world turns on itself. As the bad starts to outweigh the good, as wars rage on, and as lands and civilizations burn.

Atlas would have to be one tough-ass SOB to find the flowers and good in a situation like that. A cynic, a pessimist, a realist, they wouldn't survive. He's got to be the ultimate in "the glass is half full."

Which, when you think about it, is maybe a good thing for a guy who carries the weight of the world on his back.

What type of job do you think that kind of dude would have in a modern world?

The Devil is in the (Writing) Details

There are some people who always know what is and isn't historically, technically, or otherwise accurate in films, TV, and books. People who can point at the screen and say "that plane/gun/book/procedure isn't right."

I'm kind of in the middle when it comes to those inaccuracies. The story is more important to me overall, but when details are wrong that are so glaring, or would really change the overall plot if they were right, sometimes I can't look away.

The big irritants for me are technical things. Like, how completely improbable it would be with today's technology to be able to infinitely zoom and enhance a photo so you could read the business card sticking out of that guy's pocket who's in the background of that photo.

Yesterday a friend contacted me and asked for information about cyber-spying. A topic I know just enough about to be all geeky fangirl when I talk about it ^_^ But I wasn't just giddy that I got to babble about one of my favorite subjects, I also appreciated that she was doing her research to try and get the details right.

It made me wonder, what else do people want to know? We're writers, right? We like to get the details correct, but none of us can know everything (or maybe some of you do, and I am envious :). So what kind of things do you want to know about, both in general and specifically that would help your writing?

And if I were to feature people talking about these subjects, would you be interested in reading what they had to say? Also, would you be interested in offering your expertise in response to others' questions?

Back From Another Universe for A to Z

*Checks date on last post*

*Flushes with embarrassment*

Okay, so apparently, it's been a long time since I was blogged here. Well, in relative terms. August isn't that long ago in the grand scope of eternity, but still...

I haven't been completely invisible. Some of you know I made my debut as an author last year under the name Allyson Lindt. She's been off writing sexy romance about and for geeks, and I've been left to languish and miss my first writing love, contemporary fantasy.

But I'm bringing this blog back to life, because Loralie Hall is making her debut as a novelist this year (eep!). More on that later, because I can't spill all the good news at once ^_^

I only have a brief announcement today. To help get back into blogging, because I really miss the community and all of you, I'll be participating in the A to Z challenge this year. It'll be my fifth year, because I just can't stay away.

So stick around for the regular wackiness that are my random posts, and come back April 1 for the challenge.

Toeing the Line Teaser Part 5
The corner of Riley’s mouth pulled up. “So the rules are simple. I bet I can get you off orally and you can’t do the same. You name the prize.”

Zane winked. “A screaming orgasm.”

Her smirk returned. “You’re on. Who goes first?”

He slid from his chair, done negotiating. He nudged her legs apart, fingers scraping along the bare flesh of her inner thighs. The sweet melon she always smelled like mingled with the scent of her sex, and his thoughts swam. He kissed up the soft skin, the pain of anticipation rolling through him when she moaned and arched her back. His lips glided up one leg and down the other—from knee to knee—not moving past the edge of her shorts.

She whimpered and slid her butt forward in the seat, pushing closer. “You’re a tease.”

The corner of his mouth pulled up at the need in her taunt. “And?”

“And nothing.” She gasped when he kissed higher. “Just saying.”

He lightly scraped his teeth over the cotton covering her mound, tongue gliding along the fabric and over her covered slit. She whimpered, and her hips shifted closer.

He hooked his fingers in the elastic waist of her shorts and tugged. She lifted her ass off the chair long enough to let him slide the clothes to the floor before she dropped back in her seat, legs spread. He groaned at the sight in front of him. “You really do wax.”

“Yup.”

He traced the outside of his finger along the edge of her pussy, his moan mingling with hers at how wet she already was. He parted her lips, his touch light, and followed a trail back down. Her skin glistened in the light. He kissed up her leg until his mouth finally reached its destination, and his tongue flicked out.

Her breathing increased, and her hands rested on the top of his head. When he licked her clit, her gasp filled the room, and her hips bucked forward. His cock pressed against his jeans, begging to get in on the action, and he ignored it. He wrapped his lips around her swollen sex, and she cried out. Fuck, she tasted amazing. He flicked his tongue back and forth over the button, occasionally nipping lightly with his teeth.

Coming August 2013
Zane's time as Air Force intelligence has taught him a thing or two about keeping secrets. But when his best friend, Riley, finds out what kind of secrets he’s kept from her, their “Friends With Benefits” relationship won’t be what threatens their growing feelings for each other.

Riley tends to fall hard and fast for the guys she dates, and it never ends with the wedding bells she expects. Tired of the heartbreak and unsure if she even knows what love is, she swears off unreliable things like dating and trying to find that elusive happily-ever-after spark. Focusing on her art seems like the perfect distraction, except she’s missing the physical side of being half a couple. Fortunately, her best friend, Zane, is happy to model for her drawings and pin her down in the bedroom, with no expectations. Just fun.

Zane’s granddad raised him with the belief that people who bring joy to the world should be protected at all costs. For Zane, his best friend Riley is one of those people, and he definitely doesn't mind when making her happy involves helping her pursue her creative dream and some sport sex with a hint of kink. They can have fun, and he can keep her from falling for the next idiot who comes along while she searches for her Prince Charming.

Regardless of her resolution, as things heat up between them Riley finds herself falling again. She needs to decide if she’s in love with the idea of being in love, or if—despite Zane’s insistence that she deserves someone better—what she feels for him is the real thing. If she can’t learn to trust her heart and convince Zane he’s exactly what she needs, it will obliterate a lifelong friendship.

Toeing the Line Teaser Part 4
A flush spread over Riley’s cheeks, but she didn’t pull away. “I wasn’t talking about me, and I call bullshit.”

“Oh?” They’d had the argument before. Normally one of them backed down, but Zane’s rushing blood didn’t want to let him drop things this time.

She tucked her hair behind her ear, her thumb still stroking the inside of his thigh. “Every guy I’ve ever met who insists he likes giving oral better than receiving only says that because he’s never gotten a good blow job. One good, skilled set of lips gets him off, and even though he may still sing the same tune, he’s never quite as eager to give as receive.”

Jeez, what he’d give for a chance to prove her wrong. Or, hell, prove her right. Time to push the issue. “Tell me it’s not the same for you. Maybe you’ve just never had a guy who knew what he was doing…” He trailed off, half-expecting her to blow a fuse at the suggestion. When her brows rose instead, he kept talking. “Besides, I never blame the girl. It’s just harder to get me off orally.”

She let out an abbreviated laugh. “Bullshit. Again. I could so prove you wrong.”

Every inch of him pulsed in response. “Too bad we’re not in a position to do that.”

Her lips twisted as she thought, and her gaze raked over him. “You look like you’re in the perfect position to me. You never gave me your answer the other day.”

She still remembered. He didn’t know if he was relieved or not. “About?”

Her smile didn’t fade. “You know what about. Call it friends with benefits if you want.”

It didn’t matter to him what they called it as long as they kept the rules in mind. “It’s completely separate from our friendship.”

“Of course.” She caught her bottom lip between her teeth. “As long as we’re both okay with it, and there’s no assumption that it will or won’t happen again. This is now, and every other moment is its own thing?”

Yes, goddammit, yes. He forced his tone to remain even. “Exactly.”
