Cover Reveal: Kimber Vale's Hard Act to Follow: Shooting Stars 3

I'm super excited to have Kimber Vale visiting me today. Kimber writes some sexy-hot, grip your heart and sqeeze with all the emotions, rocker guys. And she's got the third book in her Shooting Stars series coming soon from Liquid Silver Books. So, take it away, Kimber!

First of all, thank you so much for hosting me on this, the momentous one-month countdown day to my upcoming release, Hard Act to Follow!I’m super excited to be here. I absolutely adored writing these characters and I can’t wait to share them with…well, anyone who will take them in and throw them a scrap of bread. Do it. You didn’t want that crust, anyway. It was dry and had all those yucky seeds on it. Maybe even mold if your bread drawer is like mine. I promise you won’t regret it.
Blurb:
Kyrie is an actor with a physical aversion to telling lies, a one-eyed cat, and horrible taste in men. His ex-brother-in-law and best friend, Greg, harbors a secret crush he can’t shake. After denying his feelings for Kyrie for too long, Greg finally gives in to desire one drunken night. Come the morning, the facts get twisted. Kyrie pretends he doesn’t remember a thing — a lie that eats him alive — and Greg can’t stop thinking about how he screwed up the best thing in his life.
Before they can clear the air, Kyrie follows his dreams to New York City, but could he also be running away?
A mistake from Kyrie’s past detonates their silence, and Greg is forced to confront the man he loves. Is their new truth strong enough to support a relationship, or are they doomed to crumble under old fears? Their friendship could evolve into something a million times stronger, but maybe Kyrie’s act is just too hard for Greg to follow.

First Novels, Why I (re) Wrote Uriel's Fall (again), & Coffee

Okay, so there's not really any coffee here. I drank it all. But we have this spiffy single-cup coffee maker here at home, and both coffee and tea, so place your order, and we'll all shared a cup. We also have hot chocolate if that's more your thing.

A lot of you know bits of this story, but I'm feeling reflective, so I'm sharing anyway.

Almost six years ago, I wrote a novel. I'd written others before then. Or at least, when I wrote them I thought they were novels. But six years ago I wrote the book that finally motivated me to get off my ass and start querying.

And query I did. The first queries were bad. So bad. They said things like "This isn't a novel about religion, but rather about acceptance, and change." And that was my blurb. And over the next several years, I revised (I'm honestly surprised I still have some of my writer friends for as many versions as they had to read), I queried, I entered every contest in the universe, and...

It was abysmal. Over 150 queries. I think I managed 2 full requests, 1 partial from an in-person pitch, and another partial from one Twitter pitch contest.

I got teeny, tiny morsels of feedback from those requests. You know the stuff I'm talking about. "Great book, it just wasn't for me." And "I don't see how I could sell this story in such a crowded urban fantasy market."

I had a sad :( Up to that point I'd been convinced I could be one of those few brave, mighty souls who actually did sell their first novel. Even if it wasn't technically my first, and even if only barely resembled what it had been when I first wrote it.

But after those last two bits of actual feedback, I faced the music. I said (for the five bazillionth time) that I was trunking the book. I went and wrote a category contemporary romance instead, and... WOOT! Someone wanted it. And the next two books in the same series. And some novellas. And yay!

And then, one day, I was talking to a CP about branding and marketing. I'm pretty happy with my romance brand, "Cubicle Dwellers Need Love Too." But she asked me if I could be writing anything at all, what would it be?

And as I thought about the answer (contemporary fantasy in a corporate environment, with lots of geekiness) I had to ask myself if it meant that much to me, why I hadn't done it yet.

I took a look at that trunked book, Uriel's Fall, and decided that's what was missing. It wasn't the kind of book I wanted to be writing.

Once again, I took it off the shelf, dusted it off, and rewrote it. Gone were the familiar-to-urban-fantasy elements of a diner, demons who only existed to corrupt people, and fire and brimstone. Instead, there are few things more evil to me than the bureaucracy of corporate America, and all the seedy, behind-the-scenes dealings that go with it.

The point of all this looking back? The first real novel I ever wrote will officially be out in a week. But it's started hitting shelves already. Only the name and a handful of characters are the same. But it's out there.

And YAY! I could never have done it without so much support (that's a HUGE thank you, btw, to anyone who put up with me going on and on and on about this book) , and without being willing to tear everything up and rebuild...over and over and over...

But it was worth it :D

Ronnie has the job any entry-level angel or demon would sell their soul for—she’s a retrieval analyst for the largest search engine in the world. Ubiquity is a joint initiative between heaven and hell. Because what better way to track all of humanity’s secrets, both good and bad, than direct access to their web browsing habits?

She might appreciate the position a little more if a) she could remember anything about her life before she started working at Ubiquity, b) the damned voice in her head would just shut up already, and c) her boss weren’t a complete control freak.

As she searches for solutions to the first two issues, and hopes the third will work itself out in performance reviews, she uncovers more petty backstabbing than an episode of Real Housewives, and a conspiracy as old as Lucifer’s descent from heaven.

Now Ronnie’s struggling to keep her sanity and job, while stopping the voice in her head from stealing her life. She almost misses the boredom of retrieval analysis at Ubiquity.

Almost.

The Perfect Picnic - Guest Post by Haley Whitehall

It is summertime which means it is picnic season! Unfortunately, we currently have a wildfire burning near the valley so the smoke does not make an outdoor picnic too enjoyable right now. I hope you have better picnic conditions where you are.
So besides good weather what makes for the perfect picnic?
I don’t know about you but for me watermelon is a must. The family tradition is as strong as hot dogs and hamburgers. I also can’t imagine a picnic without potato salad or baked beans. I also like having a classic checkered tablecloth to put over the picnic tables in the park. It classes it up a bit. :)
Do you like to picnic near the water? I’ve often done that. After we ate all the children would jump into the water to cool off. Picnic and swimming just seem to go together.
GIVEAWAY: Comment and tell me something you need for the perfect picnic and you could win a copy of Wild and Tender Care. Please remember to include your email addy.
Want to learn a bit about my historical western romance?
ExcerptHe pressed his lips together and after a second forged on. “So if you wouldn’t mind, could I sit with you?”
She should tell him no. Make a scene and embarrass him so he never came around her again. It would be for his own good, but selfishly she wanted him to stay. The good people in town would set him straight later. Since he didn’t know about her sordid past he could not be blamed for keeping her company.
“I would like that very much, Dr. Steere.”
He sat next to her, folding his legs crisscrossed. Like an Indian. He clearly had some Indian blood mixed with the white blood in his veins. Probably a half-breed. It wouldn’t be polite to ask, and his ancestry did not bother her one bit. He took off his hat and set it in his lap.
A fluttering sensation in her chest gave her a heady rush. She had been with many men in her short lifetime, but none had given her this feeling. Swallowing a sip of punch, she wished he would hold her hand. Yes, it was a foolish notion. They weren’t children stealing a kiss in the barn loft. Everyone was watching them whether he was aware of it or not.
Finishing her plate in silence, she inhaled his masculine scent, a unique combination of the outdoors and antiseptic. It fit the doctor. She drank down the last of her punch and set the empty cup on top of her plate.
Dr. Steere stood and offered her his hand.
Hesitating a second, she let him pull her to her feet.
He glanced at the couples dancing. “Would you like to join them?”
That was a terrible idea. She didn’t want to be forced to leave the picnic, but the hope in Dr. Steere’s eyes quieted her protests. And damn it, she would like to dance. She untied her bonnet and left in the grass next to his hat. “Yes,” she said, offering a smile. “I would love to.”
He hooked his arm around hers and her body tingled. Being led across the lawn to the designated dance floor she felt like a princess. The reel ended and many of the couples left to get refreshments. The musicians switched to a slow song to give the couples remaining a chance to catch their breath.
He unwound his arm and wrapped his palm around hers, placing his other hand on her hip.
The back of her neck prickled. “I feel everyone’s eyes on us,” she whispered. The waltz was a song for lovers.
He grinned. “Let them stare. It doesn’t bother me.”
It shouldn’t bother me either. She enjoyed the warmth of his hands, the heat in his gaze, and the remnants of tobacco on his breath. Focusing on him, she blocked out the unfriendly vibes sent in her direction. Though not powerfully built, she felt the strength in his arms, his suit hiding his rippling muscles.
He peered down at her, holding her gaze. The pleasure in his dark brown eyes likely mirrored her own. For a second she forgot about her past and let herself get caught up in the music, caught up in his touch, and lost herself in his sensual smile.
The song ended, and Dr. Steere did not let her go. Again Ida knew she should protest. It would be unseemly if they danced together any longer.
Blurb:The town of Big Rock, Colorado is changing its wild-west ways, and ex-madam Ida Page and new town doctor William Steere are finding it difficult to be accepted for who they are. But when these two outcasts meet, they find their rightful place in each other’s arms. Haley Whitehall burns up the pages in her hot, new historical romance, Wild and Tender Care

Ida Page has seen the worst the west has to offer. Snubbed by the citizens of Big Rock, Colorado ever since the town cleaned up its act and became civilized, she has tried to change with the times. No other line of work available, she became a laundress after the mayor shut down the whorehouse, but the good people will not allow her to forget her past as a shady lady. She has given up on ever being accepted, let alone falling in love, until a handsome half-breed stranger arrives in town.

After the War Between the States, William Steere has been looking for a town to build a medical practice. He answered a newspaper ad placed by the mayor of Big Rock and hopes their desperate need for a doctor will overrule their race prejudice against his half-breed heritage. At the Independence Day picnic, he is introduced to all the town citizens except for one woman sitting off by herself. This redhead draws him to her with merely a gaze.

Can the two outcasts find love and acceptance in each other's arms or will the town’s cruelty and a smallpox epidemic tear them apart?

What Would You Sell Your Soul For?

16341875_s There's a new short, Puppies and Promises, up on the website, and it's not nearly as fluffy (only half as much) as the name implies. Apparently, I was fixated for a little while on people selling their souls. Or at least thinking about it. When Josh was in high school, his entire future was threatened--his football scholarship, all of it--when someone outed him as gay.

He had a choice, make everyone forget, or live with the consequences. Now, many years later, he has a rare chance. He gets to decide a second time.

If you have one regret in your life (and I'm told most of us do), would you take the chance to go back and undo things if it was an option?

Footloose & Fancy Free... w/ Sofia Grey, author of Craving

Craving blog tour

Footloose and fancy free...
There are days when I feel like walking away from everything. The never-ending mountain of laundry. The constantly-breaking-down car. The plaintive wails in the morning when school socks can’t be found, bus fare money has vanished and the only bread for sandwiches is still in the freezer.

How would it feel to step over those responsibilities as though they didn’t exist? I’m not sure I could and I sometimes envy those lucky people unfettered in this way.

Dante, the hero from Craving (Talisman #2), travels light. No responsibilities. At least that’s how he appears to Katherine.

ExcerptHe placed his helmet on the floor, took off his boots, and lined them neatly beside it. Padding round the room in his socks, he peered at the photographs adorning the walls and shelves, eyeing the trinkets and ornaments. Even here, in an alien environment, he still acted as king of the jungle. His mid-length, brown hair fell roughly around his face, several days of stubble graced his jaw, yet he looked delicious. God. I’d been too long without a real boyfriend if I thought he was attractive. He was a thug! He wasn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks—he was the wrong side. No fixed address, according to Tristan. No regular employment. Tattoos. Piercings. Motorcycle. God’s-Gift-to-Women attitude. Get a grip, Katherine.Funny how I forgot all that when he smiled at me.He nodded toward the bedroom and fixed me with a teasing grin, the silver eyes glittering. “You’re sleeping in there?”I nodded. His lip curled again. “And you’re sure you want me to sleep here?” He gestured at the sofa. “It’s awfully close to your bed.”“You won’t try anything. You’ve not been paid yet.”“Touché.” He looked highly amused, little crinkles appearing in the corners of his eyes. “You’ve got balls, you know.”“Oh?” I injected a bored tone.I stood rigidly as he sauntered to stand mere inches away, close enough to smell his breath. Minty. “You’re afraid of me.”I kept my face still. My heart was racing, but it had nothing to do with being scared.“Yet you invite me to stay. And you came waltzing into the tower when you thought you heard someone inside.” His voice dropped. “Just you and a flashlight. There could have been anyone inside.”“I’ve studied self-defense. I know a few moves.”“Yeah?” Like a cat playing with a mouse, he extended one arm to the side of my head and rested his hand against the wall. He stood a few inches taller than me, and I shifted my eyes to meet his, intrigued by his posturing. “Are you playing games with me, Kitten?” His voice a sensuous whisper. As his left arm slowly rose, moving to box my head on both sides, I smiled. And moved. Years of practice made for an easy grab and twist maneuver. I took him completely by surprise. One hand on his left forearm, I ducked under his elbow and spun around as I dragged his arm down. My left arm shoved at his shoulder, forcing him round.A second later, with his face pressed to the wall and his left arm twisted behind his back, he laughed. It sounded genuine. I leaned on him a fraction longer, exerting just a little more pressure, then released. He spun around, laughing, rubbing his wrist. “Well done, Kitten, that was awesome. Are you afraid of anything?”I allowed a grin. “I’m not afraid of you.”

Haze and confusion circled me as I struggled to make sense of my surroundings. I blinked several times to clear away the odd vision, but it was still there. Ari stood on the far side of the alley, fists clenched, eyes narrowed, staring down Gabe.

His low voice rumbled around us. “You were warned.”

Her expression wavered, but her reply was firm. “What gives you the right?”

A million tiny pinpricks rushed and danced over my skin as the entire atmosphere shifted. Gabe’s wings appeared—flawless, taller than he was, black and white lined with gold—and his aura flared vibrant and golden. “I do.”

The two words rattled the ground, vibrating more than the music inside. She took a step back, and her bravado vanished under a mask of uncertainty. She turned her attention to me, something unreadable in her eyes. “I’m sorry.” And then she was gone.

What the fuck? I rested my weight against the wall behind me, still trying to make sense of the scene.

The glow, the wings, and everything summoned around Gabriel vanished, and he was himself when he whirled to face me. He closed the distance between us quickly. “Are you all right?”

“Why did she stop?” I winced at the dry rasp in my voice.

“I stopped her.” He rested a hand on the back of my neck, thumb gently gliding over my cheek. “You were screaming.”

His touch filled in the lingering pain and chased it away. “I was? I didn’t know.” My tone had returned to normal.

He gave me a dry smile. “You were. Are you all right now?”

Except being so close to him fogged my thoughts and filled my skull with an unexpected need. “I’m fine.”

He tilted his head closer, still stroking my cheek. “Good. I was worried.”

“About me? I’m fine.” The attention warmed my skin.

“Good,” he whispered. He leaned closer, and brushed his lips over mine.

Tendrils of pleasure snaked through me, and I kissed back. I rested my hands on his chest, memorizing the texture of T-shirt stretched over muscle definition. My lips parted, and his tongue accepted the invitation, sliding into my mouth and dancing.

A groan escaped my lips. I pressed into him, wanting to feel every inch of his body against mine. It was like liquid lust spilled through me, and I needed more. His other hand glided down my spine, and I arched my back at the feather-light sensation, grinding against him. His fingers found the hem of my skirt and tugged it up an inch. His skin was rough against mine.

I will not be ignored! Especially for him.
The roar echoed through my skull, and I broke away with a gasp, stumbling back.
Gabe’s brow furrowed. “Are you all right?”
I will destroy someone for what was done to me. If you like his company so much, it can be him.

The Cake (Candy House?) is a Lie

GrimmPicture There's a new short, Sugar Coated Dreams, up on my website. Once upon a time (because all good fairy tales start that way) there was a girl and her brother. Their father abandoned the hungry children in the woods. They thought all was lost until they stumbled on a house made of candy.

And Gretel will never feel the same way about candy again.

I'm a big fan of the Grimm tales. The dark, more authentic versions, not the Disney versions (though I'll admit to loving my classic Disney tales, it's just not the same thing, is all). What's your favorite fairy tale?

Happy Book Birthday to Craving by Sofia Grey! (Talisman, #2)

I'm so excited to be helping Sofia Grey celebrate the launch of her book Craving. Sofia is one my critique partners, my alter ego's partner in crime over at GeminiGirls, and a one of the most incredible, talented authors ever.

If you haven't read Obsession (Talisman, #1), you need to get on that. And either way, you should be grabbing a copy of Craving. Paranormal stuffs, possession, angry spirits, and a lot of hot, intensity both in the bedroom and out of it.

A deal with a demon, a biker psychic and the girl who might just be his salvation... if the demon doesn’t get to her first.

Dante’s never allowed himself to get close to anyone for fear of putting them in danger. His craving for Katherine is about to bring his worst nightmares to life.

ExcerptDante’s breath hitched. He flinched, and a shudder ran up my arm. As he lifted his head I felt the temperature plummet. The candles nearest to him flickered and bobbed as though in a breeze and I shivered, chills oozing down my neck.“Hello, Gabriel.” Dante sounded polite, respectful. Beside me, Suki gasped, her fingers closing tighter around my hand. One by one, the candles flickered and stuttered, the flames waved crazily and almost blew out, before righting themselves. It looked as though an unseen child crawled around the room, puffing at each one in turn. I shivered and tucked my feet in tighter, huddling into myself to keep warm.“Please show yourself to the circle. Come and talk to us, Gabriel.”I wrinkled my nose. What was that weird smell? Like rotting meat. The outer candles shimmied in turn, but faster now. Dante spoke again, calm and measured. “Gabriel. I summon you to the circle.”Suki’s chest heaved, her eyes wide and scared in the dim lights. The candlelight steadied. Dante’s hand relaxed a fraction, and he sucked in a deep breath. Was this it? Would Gabe appear? The stink faded, and I turned my head to look at Dante just as Suki squealed and a tiny spotlight in the ceiling exploded. Poof. One by one, the recessed bulbs sparked and shattered, tiny glass fragments raining down on us. Poof. Josh swore under his breath and I sought my voice. Poof.“Don’t break the circle, keep your hands linked.” Yes, I’d taken Nanette’s role.Poof. Slivers of glass in my hair. I gripped Dante ever tighter. I kept my head down to avoid the falling glass, but focused on him through the curtain of my hair. He stared at the far wall, his face a mask. I looked too. A column of mist hovered in front of the door, tendrils snaked along the floor and washed around the circle, nudging the salt lines. It’s trying to get in, I realized, my heart speeding up. Poof. The final spotlight blew out, leaving us illuminated only by candles. I shivered, trembling from head to toe. My teeth would be chattering in another minute.Dante gasped, and his head lolled forward. I blinked as the room began to dim. Oh God. One by one, the outer candles winked out, invisible fingers pinching the wicks. I could feel Suki’s terror, the trembling cascading down through her hand. I tried to stay calm. Just the inner eight candles left. The stink of rotting meat returned. I wanted to cover my nose, but daren’t break the circle. And then Dante spoke in a voice I didn’t recognize.*

Random Viewing Thoughts: Metalocolypse

When I'm not gaming or writing, I watch TV. Netflix and Amazon Prime are our frequent guests at home, because we dont' have cable. That means sometimes it takes a while for us to get to a series. It has to be available to stream. But it also means we can frequently watch entire seasons and series at once.

Or pick random movies. Whatever strikes our mood. And we tend to pick the less mainstream films.

And every once in a while I feel the desire to muse aloud about these shows and movies. Not really so much reviews as impressions--initial and long term--and thoughts.

Metalocalypse from wikipedia.orgWe marathoned Metalocolypse over the last couple of weekends. They're short episodes, so it's a short watch, but it's not currently free to stream after season 1, just a heads-up.

Anyway, when it comes to Metalocolypse, I'm a little torn. Okay, I'm a lot torn. It's gory, it's violent, and especially as the series starts, the main characters are not sympathetic. A bunch of death metal rockers who, as a band, have the world's seventh largest economy. Basically, their success or failure impacts the entire world's financial structure.

But it's got some giggles. So I sat through the first season and overlooked (for the most part) all the horrific cartoon blood (I'm not a fan of that in general, in case it was in question).

And then we got to the end of Season 1, and I won't spoil anything, but apparently, this dark, gratuitous show, had an underlying plot. And they teased it just enough that I had to watch and find out more.

Each season is about the same. Lots of unneccesary death, lots of ego, the standard drama that goes with any group of well-paid, spoiled artist. But always with this underlying plot about the Metalocoplypse (yes, like apocalypse, but totally metal), and how the band will play a part in it. And, of course, they wait until the last couple of episodes of each season to really suck you back into that bigger picture, and end on a cliff-hanger.

And then we got to the end of Season 4, and no more seasons :( But there was a movie. Or even better, a rock opera. I'm a fan of the rock opera, album wise. Some of my favorite albums are rock operas.

And The Doomstar Requiem was no exception. It's difficult to understand the lyrics in parts, but suddenly all the character development that's only really been hinted at over the seasons fell into place. Events were explained, large portions of this plot unfolded and engrossed me.

I kind of wish Doomstar Requiem could be appreciated without the rest of the series, but really, it doesn't stand on its own. But for a weekend of vegging and marathoning, it was a great finishing touch (except there's a season five in the works).

So, rock operas (which sounds so much fancier than musical with rock music), yay or nay?

Be Careful What You Wish For

29970(0).jpg I have a new short up on the website, called Revenge in an Elevator.

There's something fascinating to me about any creature depicted as a devil, or evil, or mischievous in their respective religion or mythology. I think, like any true villain, there's so much more depth to an individual like that then just the desire to do harm.

After all, even bad guys have their motivations, right? Then again, sometimes, they just want to watch the world burn. Or in this case, grant wishes and see what kind of bedlam happens after.

If you could wish for anything, what would it be?
