Nulli Para Ora and the Characters of Initiate
During the entire month of May I'm hosting a reverse blog tour. Rather than send y'all to other people's blogs to read about me, which you already do if you're a regular here, I'm introducing you to some amazing and talented authors from all walks of life and genres.
When Nulli Para Ora agreed to let me interview some of her characters, I was thrilled. First of all, I love meeting new (imaginary) people, and second, Nulli is a talented and prolific author, and her book Initiate is one that's captured my imagination from the moment I saw it.
So she let me interview her hero Cirian, and her heroine Ashland. This couple is sexy, funny, and a blast to be in the room with.
Tell us about your favorite childhood memory. A game you played, a ritual you had with friends, or something else.
Cirian looks at Ashland, a small smile spreading his lips. "I'd like to hear this answer myself."
Ashland: "I liked to play jingling."
Cirian raises and eyebrow. "You? You allowed someone to blindfold you while you tried to track down the noise they made? You voluntarily relinquished control? Who the hell are you? Where's Ashland?"
Ashland: "We were kids. We didn't have to worry about someone trying to eat us." When Cirian sighs, she laughs.
Cirian: "I enjoyed archery and sword play."
Asland: "Figures."
Cirian: "What?"
Ashland: "Nothing."
Cirian: "By the land, woman, I'll never understand you."
*laughing* the things you learn about each other, even after that connection is made. So tell me, both of you, family first or friends?
Ashland: "Family."
Cirian: "Family, but true friends are family."
Ashland: "That's actually pretty sweet coming from you."
Cirian: "Don't make me turn you over my knee."
*whew* the temperature is starting to rise in here. Keep in mind, my good friends, this is a public forum *winks*.
Tell me, what's you're least favorite duty?
Ashland: "Oh that's easy."
Cirian: "Here we go..."
Ashland: *rolls eyes* "My least favorite duty is being an Initiate."
Cirian: "It's an honor."
Ashland: "It's a death sentence!"
Cirian: *takes her hand* "I won't let anything happen to you." He pauses before speaking again. "I'd say my least favorite duty is preparing someone for a future they don't want."
Ashland: "Cirian... I don't know what to say."
Cirian: *locks eyes with her, but doesn't speak*
That was a loaded question. I didn't mean to cool things off so quickly. How about we make the mood a little lighter again? Maybe add a hint of sweet to things. What's your favorite desert?
Ashland: "Sticky pudding. It's warm and sweet. I like to eat it slowly, you know, savoring it."
Cirian stares at her, a look a surprise on his face. "Well, it's sticky toffee pudding now."
*ahem* That one speaks for itself.
To finish us up, let's dig into a little wide-scale wish fulfillment. If you could have any one thing in the entire world, what would it be?
Ashland: "Freedom."
Cirian: "A new job, and for her to find some of that freedom in me."
So well said. Sometimes the simplest wishes are the hardest to realize. Thank you to both of you. Readers, any questions for Ashland, Cirian, or Nulli? They're all happy to interact with you.
About Nulli Para Ora
I'm a romance author who writes in multiple genres. A lover of languages, anime, martial arts, video games, nature, and music, I am inspired by everything from the profound to the mundane.
Whether it's crafting a new realm, an alien planet, a new species, or an alternate reality, you can always count on twists and turns in my tales. Love can be irrational, undeniable, blissful, erotic, and sometimes frustrating, but it is also universal, binding hearts across cultures and time. Step into one of my worlds and stay awhile.

And now that I've whet your pallet, a little more about Initiate:
Bound in service to the king, Initiates are selected and brought to the palace to forfeit their lives and fulfill their calling. That is until duty and honor clash with self-preservation. The resulting test of wills may destroy a kingdom and a new love which should never have seen the light of day.
On the surface, the kingdom of Minra appears idyllic, steeped in peace and prosperity. This peace comes at a price. The villages of the kingdom offer up Initiates—individuals who vie for the chance to be selected as the King’s Companion—to preserve the kingdom. Initiate and Companion are the most honored and coveted roles in all the land, for Companions nourish Minra’s monarch with their life force until they die, allowing their wise king to survive for generations.
Under Ritual Trainers bound in service to the king, Initiates are selected and brought to the palace to fulfill their duty. All Initiates greet this opportunity with happiness and reverence. Almost all. One Initiate forsakes time-honored traditions in favor of self-preservation.
Is this forfeiture of life a worthy trade—or even necessary—for the good of the kingdom? In the battle for superiority, can love survive and overthrow generations of sacrifice and tradition?
Hooked yet? It's available now in all digital formats from Liquid Silver Books
And specifically for your Kindle from amazon

And she's given me an excerpt just for y'all
No one was sure how it started, but King Kendrick had stopped aging. He made no secret of his condition, and for a time, he nourished himself by feeding on the life force of the enemies of Minra.
There hadn’t been any battles nor secret plots in centuries. It was the people of the kingdom who decided to offer up Initiates to keep the king strong. Even though there hadn’t been any negative experiences in living memory, the elders of each village handed down the tales of how things were before Kendrick took the throne. Life had been good under Kendrick’s rule, and no one was willing to return to the hardships of times past.
None of that mattered to Ashland as she took determined strides. She was a little breathless as she approached the door to Cirian’s carriage. She looked up at the side of the hood on the Ritual Master’s head through the window with a ball of venomous ire rising up her throat. “I hope I become a Companion just so he can choke on me and finally die!”
Cirian didn’t move. When he spoke, it was with a controlled tone. “Are you finished?”
“What?” The anger she felt before transformed into a full-on rage. Her blood churned, filling her with the urge to leap into the carriage and scratch the arrogant man’s eyes out.
“Are you finished with this little display of yours?” He remained still and continued to face forward as if she wasn’t there.
Just who the hell did this man think he was? There he sat, ripping her away from everything she knew, and he had the nerve to sit there as if she was an inconvenience. Ashland’s disgust removed any remaining filter she might have had.
“Are you finished being a jackass?” She put her balled fists on her hips and narrowed her eyes at the man who’d decided her fate. She knew her words were inappropriate, but she didn’t care. She wasn’t raised to back down from a challenge. She blew out a breath of frustration. Despite her upbringing, she was also raised to respect the royal court.
“Get in your carriage.” The Ritual Master was unaffected by her anger, and he leaned to the opposite window and called out in a firm tone. “Callan, let’s go. I want to be back at the palace before midday. Baan, see to it this Initiate makes it to her carriage.” He paused for a moment before continuing. “If she speaks out of turn, find a gag to silence her.”
Ashland couldn’t decide if she was about to scream or spontaneously combust as she stared at Cirian in shock. How dare he!
Before she could open her mouth, Baan was at her side, and he gripped her forearm gently. “This way, Initiate.”
She blinked several times before she felt him tug her along. Allowing herself to be led away, she turned her gaze to the man guiding her toward the farm. He was taller than she was, with hair the color of a field of sunlit wheat. He wore it long, the golden strands pulled back and tucked into his robe. His face was youthful, but he carried himself with an air of formal reserve.
A small smile pulled the corners of his mouth, and he spoke in a quiet voice. “It’s okay to be nervous, but I assure you, everything will be just fine.”
“That’s easy for you to say. You’re not on the menu.”

Zip-Zoom!
My A-Z theme for the month of April is romance and the modern, technology-driven cubicle dweller (like me).
Welcome to the very last day of the 2013 A-Z challenge. Every year has been amazing to participate, but this year was by far the best. It may also be my last.
But along the way I've met fantastic new people, rediscovered some old favorites (after my reader unceremoniously lost so many of them a few months back), and read some great posts. I know Friday is the day for the reflections posts, but next month I'm hosting a slew of amazing authors on my site and each day is all theirs.
So as April winds to a close, Zip-Zoom-Zam! Farewell A-Z, but I hope all those of you I've run into stick around, because it's been great talking to you!
What did you think of the challenge this year?

YAY!

Once again, I'm hijacking my own A-Z post. I do hope you'll forgive me, since today is the book birthday for my debut contemporary romance, Conflict of Interest.
I've already got a blurb and other info posted here, a free glimpse of the book here, and filled many of my A-Z posts with quotes from the book. So instead today I wanted to do something different, but that's very important to me.
I wanted to thank everyone who's helped me reach this point. I know I won't get everyone, just because not only has this not been a solo journey, but so many people have inspired, helped, motivated, and pushed me over the last few years. But I'm going to make a list anyway.
First and very most important - Alixandria <3 - there are not enough words.
To Janeal and RaeChell, thank you for putting up pretty much non-stop with my insanity, bolstering my ego, and telling me when I can do it and when I can’t.
And to Kathryn and Leela Lou, for helping me recognize the ins and outs of this story. I’m so very glad I found them.
Then there's, Dustin, who always asked if I’m still writing, and who let me bounce pen names off him until I found one that just fit.
Thank you to Breanna, Kate, Laura, Cathy, Mires, Dawn, Lisa—and absolutely everyone who’s ever read my work on writing.com. That list alone could go on for pages. Their encouragement drove me through the highs and lows of learning to tell a story.
To everyone who I've met since I started blogging - that list is definitely too long, but you've all been amazing and friendly and fantastic to get to know.
And thank you to Liquid Silver Books, the staff, and all my amazing fellow-authors for giving me a chance, and making this such a great ride.
And now, since this is starting to feel like an award acceptance speech instead of just a way for me to show my gratitude, I'll stop. But I still can't thank everyone enough <3

Xystus
My A-Z theme for the month of April is romance and the modern, technology-driven cubicle dweller (like me).
From wikipedia.org: Xystus was the Greek architectural term for the covered portico of the gymnasium, in which the exercises took place during the winter or in rainy weather, etc. The Romans applied the term to the garden walk in front of the porticoes, which was divided into flower beds with borders of box, and to a promenade between rows of large trees.
Xystus - it sounds a bit exotic, doesn't it? And looking at the origins of the word, a covered portico, a garden walk divided into flower beds, it sounds like it's got a lot of exotic potential as well. So maybe a gymnasium doesn't sound like the most romantic place ever, but a tucked away spot used for physical activity in the rain, that's got a lot of potential.
Or maybe I'm reaching just a little bit. But still, I read the definition of this word and the images that danced in my head were of an early spring morning, pouring rain, a couple tucked away from the storm, a building surrounded by flowers and trees...
Not quite the definition of the word, but still a romantic thought.
What kind of romantic, isolated weather do you like do daydream about?
PS: I'm holding a pre-release party for my upcoming novel, with door prizes (including gift cards), so if you want, jump over to the post, and get a free Rafflecopter entry just for checking it out ^_^

Wicked Watching
My A-Z theme for the month of April is romance and the modern, technology-driven cubicle dweller (like me).
If you didn't have a chance to stop by yesterday, I talked about how communication is more than just the words we say. But I'm not done with that thought.
Because when it comes to romance, for a lot of people there's a seductive appeal in watching. I know a lot of writers people-watch, this just takes it to the next level. There's something wicked about either watching, or being watched.
In fact...an unedited excerpt from the novella I finished a few weeks back, Unconventional Fling:
A movement behind him caught her attention. The hotel elevators were glass, rising up the open center of the building. Inside the one heading up was the most vibrant array of hot pink, neon blue, and lime green she’d ever seen.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw him shift in his seat to follow her gaze. She turned to him, studying the line of his back as it led to his shoulder. It would be nice to have those strong arms pin her to a wall and…she pushed the thought away. What was wrong with her? Letting her hormones and lust run rampant because of some guy.
His eyebrows rose as his eyes met hers. She pulled her gaze away, studying her breakfast, but not before she caught the hint of a smile tugging up his mouth.
“So, you like to watch.” Teasing lined his question. “People, I mean.”
Say it, or keep it to herself? What the hell. It wasn’t like she was ever going to see this guy again, and the flirting was fun. “I could go either way.”
He chuckled. “I like that. Would you let me watch?” He raked his fingers through his hair. “Sorry, that was probably a bit much.”
The sudden hesitation just made him that much more charming. Was she really having the conversation first thing in the morning in the middle of a crowded room? “I might.”

Visual, Vocal, Verbal
My A-Z theme for the month of April is romance and the modern, technology-driven cubicle dweller (like me).
A lot of my posts this month have focused on two specific parts of interaction and how they merge, blend, and sometimes stand in for one another, especially in today's world. I've talked a lot about...well...talking, and implied a lot about touching.
But there's more to communication than talking, and communication is key in any long-term romance. Sure, you can have a fling that's all based on looks and lust, but if you want it to last...at least that's how I feel about it.
And there are three v's to communication, conveniently enough. And verbal is only the first. Verbal would be the words you say. And believe it or not, in face-to-face communication, this is the least important out of the three. I think that's one reason things like email and texting have numbed us to how we interact with other people. With just the words, there's so much meaning lost. The connection isn't there.
Then you have vocal. Which sounds a lot like verbal, but has a lot more to do with the tone of voice you use. My kitties know this one all too well. If they hear a certain tone of voice when I speak to them - especially if the syllables are similar to those they've heard in the past, but not always, they know they're getting fed, being scolded, getting affection, etc. And really, it's the same for us, even if we do understand the words. "That dress does amazing things for your curves." Takes on a very different meaning if said in a low, seductive tone, versus a flat sarcastic one.
And speaking of. The biggest part of in-person communication, and the reason that in the end it still wins out over digital (unless you've got a video chat going on, and even then it's no the same), is visual. Body language. Most of us know the basics. Crossed arms usually means someone is being stand-offish, leaning closer usually means interest.
But there's so much to the visuals we never even think about, that we process all the time. For instance, "That dress makes your curves look fantastic." If it's accompanied by eyes sweeping over you, a tiny smile on their face, and that low, sultry voice, that's enough to evoke chills. (Hopefully the pleasant kind, depending on the person delivering the line :-P)
This is why I don't think digital communication, regardless of how prolific it becomes, can ever completely replace a face-to-face interaction, especially when it comes to romance. What do you think?

Understanding

I sat in a meeting today, like I do on so many days, and listened to a group of people try and reach consensus on something. They were all trying to have the same understanding of the same piece of information.
It was not a pretty process. Many things were repeated in many different ways at many different times. But in the end, there was understanding.
In a romantic relationship it's a lot the same (except with any luck, if the boring conference room is involved, the conference table isn't being used for computers). Common ground is so important. Compromise. Understanding each other, even when you don't see eye to eye. Sometimes that understanding comes easily, and sometimes it's a little more painful.
But with that special someone, it tends to be worth it. Especially when resolving that misunderstanding leads to making up after ;-)
How do you approach finding that common ground of understanding?

Teasing

When we were little, teasing someone to show interest meant things like kicking their chair, or pulling their hair, or anything that attracted their attention but didn't let on how much we liked them.
But teasing as adults works differently. I hope. If you're all-growed-up age, you probably can't get that guy/girl's attention by kicking their chair. Though the hair pulling...that's got possibilities.
*Ahem* For me, teasing lies somewhere between flirting and seduction. It's a taste of what's to come, a kiss, a whisper, a brush of warm breath on the skin, that may or may not lead further. It heightens the anticipation, it stretches out the moment. That feather-light touch followed by pulling back, a wink, and a look that promises more, but not until later, can send one's pulse racing to glorious places.
But I know it's not for everyone. What about you? Teasing, or get straight to the point?

Seduction

Throughout the month, I've touched a lot on the way modern romance for us technology dominated folks involves modern technology (go figure). Email, texting, Skype. And a lot of people who have stopped by have agreed. Sometimes that little note from far away (whether far away is your significant other's office, or a thousand miles or more), can make all the difference and make your smile huge.
And seduction is no different. For me, the initial word summons a physical interaction. A touch, a smile, a hand on his arm, or rested against her cheek.
It doesn't have to be that way. Seduction can be verbal and very much remote. Flirting taking to the next level, usually less tentative, and frequently with someone you're not worried about pushing you away. Yes, a simple, "So, what are you wearing?", spoken with confidence, or typed the same way, can lead you both down paths that are absolutely amazing.
But even though I've done both real life and digital seduction (in my books and in real life, how meta is that?), face to face still wins out in this one for me.
Brushing a finger along the edge of your partner's ear. Resting your hands on their hips. Having them move up behind you and run their lips over your neck.
Yup, for today in-person seduction wins. At least for me. What about you?

Conflict of Interest Pre-Release Contest!
This contest is now closed, but thank you to absolutely everyone who entered and helped me spread the word. It was an amazing and fantastic pre-release party!
In about a week (give or take seven days depending on when you're stopping by ;) my debut contemporary romance, Conflict of Interest is coming out.
If you haven't head about the book yet, you can learn more here, and even click through to read Chapter 1 of this hot, explicit romance for free. Basically, he's tired of his board of directors dictating his behavior. Her job is to make him like it. Throw in a couple rounds (or more) of intense sexiness - despite the risk to both their jobs - and how could it not be a Conflict of Interest?
I'm excited on a pretty epic scale for everyone to read this book, and I'm asking for a little help to spread the word. I'm even bribing you for your time, yanno, in case you're interested.
I'm giving away a $15 gift card for either Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble - winner's choice - to one random helper, a $5 gift card (again, winner's choice of the two retailers), and 3 random helpers will win an /*Intense Sexiness Goes Here*/ coffee mug (the note I leave in my outlines to remind me, well...where the intense sexiness goes).
I'm not asking a lot, just for you to help me spread the word, give my Twitter profile (@AllysonLindt) and Facebook Page some follow love, and tell your friends. You can even come back every day for the next week and get another entry for telling people about this post.
Oh, and I'm also offering a couple extra entries if you pre-order Conflict of Interest.
But wait, there's more! (sorry, I've always wanted to say that and have it mean something). Next month (May) for the book's release, I'm also holding a month long launch party, where I'll be introducing you to some brilliant fantasy, YA, romance, and erotica authors right here on this blog.
And as part of the upcoming celebration (not this contest, the next one), I'll be giving away a Nook, another gift card or two, and more mugs. And everything you do to enter this current raffle will earn you easy entries into the next one (kind of like an open-note test, but without the studying or stress).
The contest ends Midnight EST on April 29 (that's early in the morning, so you have through April 28 to enter). I'll be in touch with the winners about 48 hours after the contest closes. You'll need a physical mailing address if you win a mug. The contest is open internationally. You do not have to be in the US to enter.
If you have any other questions, email me: allyson (dot) lindt (at) gmail (dot) com, or leave a comment below and I'll answer below.
