$7,800/Month Solving Crosswords

NYT Crossword AnswersNYT Crossword AnswersWebsite $7,800 estimated monthly revenue

Check out NYT Crossword Answers 😵

It’s a simple site that provides answers to the New York Times’ crossword puzzles.

The site apparently gets 1.4M visits each month 📈

Looks like the only monetization going on is via  display ads.

Per Google’s official Adsense calculator, a site with that much traffic in the Arts and Entertainment category – and with most visitors coming from North America – would be earning about $94,000/year 🤑

The site has been around since 2017. Best I can tell, it’s mainly run by a guy named Nate Parkerson, although there are multiple authors on site.

The site ranks for keywords like…

nyt crossword answersny times crossword solution today[Something] crossword clue

The pages for the latter seem to be generated via programmatic SEO.

Examples…

dolts crossword cluebotches crossword clueemphatic type crossword clue

Altogether, Google has indexed 195,000 pages on the site 🤯

Fascinating to me that a simple site about crosswords can earn someone a good living.

But, of course, only after they’ve stuck with it day-after-day for several years.

Reminds me of the $1 Million Sudoku YouTubers we profiled a while back.

Oh, and worth noting that NYT Crossword Answers likely isn’t even the most successful site in its niche.

All of these competitors seem to get significantly more traffic 👇

crossword-solver.io (3.3M)crosswordtracker.com (6.3M)crosswordsolver.com (7M)crosswordsolver.org (8.2M)

So don’t be discouraged if you see big competitors in a space you’re interested in.

If the market is big enough, there should be plenty of room for you to succeed as well 💪

This Free App Earns Him $4675/Month

Faizan DurraniFaizan DurraniFounder of Paperback $4,675 monthly revenue
Published November 23, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Paperback is an ad-free book/comic reading app for iOS, developed by Faizan Durrani 🇵🇰

From Faizan’s LinkedIn

Self-taught; 22 year old; Programmer from Karachi, Pakistan.

Looks like he’s been working on Paperback since 2020.

As of this writing the app earns $4,675/month via Patreon 🤑

Judging by his LinkedIn, Faizan seems to have a full-time remote job and probably works on Paperback in his free time.

Someone commented on one of his Patreon posts back in 2021

After the news that Manga Storm will no longer be supported. This is like an oasis in the desert.

Manga Storm was another app for reading comics and I’m guessing that’s what prompted Faizan to build his app 💡

Unclear how he got traction, but I’d guess it was mostly social traffic from places like YouTube, Reddit and probably online comic communities.

The Paperback Discord community has 50,000+ members, so less than 10% of them pay to support the app via Patreon, and it sounds like most of the supporters are only paying the minimum $1/month.

So what we’ve got here is a niche comic reading app for iOS by a kid in Pakistan. About as niche as it gets.

And by the way, the median salary in Pakistan is apparently less than $300/month, so Faizan is likely living large in Karachi 😎

A prompt for you: do you know of any popular products or services that are being discontinued or no longer being supported?

If so, there might be an opportunity there to build a nice little niche business 😍

$119K/Month Explaining Complex Topics Simply

Lane WagnerLane WagnerFounder of Boot.dev $119,000 monthly revenue
Published November 23, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Boot.dev is a gamified platform to learn backend development, founded by Lane Wagner in 2020 🚀

Ayush Chaturvedi recently tweeted, while sharing a graph of Boot.dev’s revenue from Indie Hackers

This is one of the most impressive revenue growth charts I’ve seen in a while.

Look at the growth in the last 4 months 🔥

From $23K in June to $77K in September.

And as of this writing, they’re up to $119,000 in monthly revenue 💰

Lane shared in a post from Feb 2022…

Having a large audience was my unfair disadvantage.

I started blogging about code in 2018.

The feedback that I consistently was getting from readers was along the lines of “Thanks, you have a talent for explaining complex topics simply.”

But…

The one thing I never understood well enough: The members of my audience had almost nothing in common.

And…

Having a large audience with members that don’t have a problem in common threw me off track for a long time. I’m now doing my best to figure out how I can continue to narrow down my target audience until everyone in that market loves Qvault.io [Now Boot.dev]

Sounds like Lane eventually solved that problem 🥳

A few months later he wrote

After 2 years, we’ve hit $5k monthly revenue

We’ve learned this year that:

– Our best customers already have some form of higher education
– We should focus entirely on the backend niche
– We need to describe our uniqueness in a more concise way
– Advertising our opinions sets us apart in a crowded market

They were only at $5k/month then, but I reckon they’d already laid the groundwork for $100k/month and beyond 📈

Back to Ayush’s tweet, he adds…

[Their] Top Channels of growth

– Podcast and YouTube appearances
– Sponsoring creators
– Organic [SEO Traffic]

Their social traffic is 90% YouTube.

This would be a mix of podcasts, YouTube interviews + sponsoring creators

One interesting video I came across: Lane doing a free 10-hour course on FreeCodeCamp’s YouTube Channel…

That video has 370K+ views 👀

That’s the kind of thing that has probably gotten Boot.dev a bunch of new paying customers.

Which has me thinking: could you partner with a big educational YouTube channel in your niche? 🤔

Maybe you could emulate Lane’s approach with FreeCodeCamp, provide lots of value for free, build trust, establish your expertise, and get the word out about your product or service.

Learned This Skill In His Car, Now Earns $100,000+

Ryan PostellRyan PostellWeb Designer $100,000+ annual revenue
Published November 23, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

A question on Reddit

Web developers that often build websites for more than $5,000 a piece, what does your business look like?

💬 Which prompted a response from Ryan Postell…

I started out by teaching myself web development in my car while I did Uber.

In between rides I was coding and watching tutorials and doing online self paced bootcamps.

After about a year and a half of that I got good enough at it to start freelancing.

And here I am 5 years later with a full time front end developer job and I run my agency that makes 6 figures a year working it part time.

Looks like Ryan’s agency is Oak Harbor Web Design.

How he gets clients…

In the beginning I just cold called from google and yelp. Then after about 30-40 clients the referrals started to come in and my website was ranking well locally. Now I get all my work from my website and referrals.

Btw, Oak Harbor is a small city in Washington, USA. Population ~25,000 🇺🇸

By naming his business the way he did and building up a bit of a reputation, Ryan now ranks #1 for keywords like web design oak harbor.

He also has this article ranking #1 for hand coded website 😎

Yes, Ryan hand-codes client websites rather than using something like WordPress. He says the appeal of a hand-coded site is the speed and security.

He adds

I made my own templates in HTML and CSS that I reused for clients whose business suited the design. This cut my work dramatically. Why reinvent the wheel?

Regarding pricing, Ryan reveals

I sell static brochure sites for $3500. 5 pages. Every page after that is $100 per page. $500 fee to add a blog. Shopify e-commerce sites start at $8k…

Here’s an example of an $8k site: madscientistbbq.com

An example of a $6k site: striveptwellness.com

And a $3500 site: realdealpainting.net

Really impressive how Ryan went from driving an Uber to now having a thriving web design business, all thanks to those skills he learned between rides 💪

What skill could you start building in your spare time?

Even if it’s only 30 minutes a day, that adds up to 182 hours in a year. Enough time to go through a few courses and get good enough to start taking on simple client projects.

Ugly One Page Affiliate Website = $5000/Month

Jeremy GrosserJeremy GrosserFounder of DiskPrices.com $5000 monthly revenue
Published November 23, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Jeremy Grosser built DiskPrices.com, an extremely simple one-page site with up-to-date prices of hard drives for sale on Amazon.

According to a recent profile, the site makes $5000/month via the Amazon affiliate program 🤑

Jeremy writes

Back in 2015, I wanted to build a NAS [Network-attached storage] for backups at home.

I found the shopping experience for hard drives on Amazon extremely frustrating. You can only view 10 search results at a time. The first dozen results are sponsored listings.

So…

I decided to write a Python script to find all of the hard drives on Amazon, figure out their capacity, then sort by price per GB.

To do this 👇

You need an access key to use the API which is only available through the Amazon Affiliates program. So I signed up.

But…

Amazon won’t give new affiliates access to the Product Advertising API until they’ve referred at least three sales.

So my Python script turned into diskprices.com. I built a list of hard drives in a spreadsheet and sorted them by price per GB.

A few people clicked my links. Armed with an API key, I was able to programmatically generate the listing and keep it up to date.

The site now gets ~80,000 visits per month (source) and ranks for keywords like…

hard drive pricesdisk priceshard drive deals

📝 Jeremy writes

People link to diskprices.com from blogs, reddit, hacker news, and other forums pretty regularly, which has helped the search ranking.

I’m not a fan of paid ads or SEO tricks, so I just let things happen organically.

I suspect there could be opportunities to create other sites along these lines.

Maybe one for cameras, smartphones, or some other high-priced electronics? 🤔

The coding side of things would be much easier nowadays with the help of ChatGPT.

But be aware: Jeremy recently had an issue with Amazon Australia…

Your Amazon Affiliate Account has been closed

Fortunately that got resolved, but it highlights the risk of depending so heavily on one affiliate program 😕

Success Is Inevitable If…

A couple of quotes from Tim Grahl’s book, Running Down A Dream

Success is inevitable if you keep moving.

The only way you truly fail at a marathon is to stop taking the next step. Sometimes you’re running, sometimes you’re walking, and sometimes you’re crawling. It doesn’t matter. If you’re moving forward, you will succeed.

I ran a marathon many years ago, hit the wall around mile 21 😩 and had to walk for a few miles. But I kept going, and eventually finished.

Similarly…

Sunday marked 13 years since I quit my job and started working for myself.

I was pretty naive in the beginning, figured this entrepreneurship thing would be a piece of cake 🍰

As it turned out, it took almost a decade for my business to earn $10,000 in one month (reports).

Three years later, my monthly average is $25,000 – on track to crack $300k for the year – and I reckon I’m still just scratching the surface.

I haven’t run the whole way. I’ve walked parts of this journey, crawled others 😮‍💨

But I’ve kept going, kept moving forward.

And that, more than anything, is what has helped me succeed.

From Working at McDonalds to 1.5M Followers in 18 Months

Sheehan QuirkeSheehan QuirkeFounder of Cultural Tutor 1.5 Million followers in 18 months
Published November 20, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Sheehan Quirke is the guy behind Cultural Tutor on Twitter (most popular tweets).

He went from working at McDonald’s 🍔 with 0 followers to over 1.5 million followers in just 18 months 🚀

Chenell Basilio breaks down the story

[Sheehan’s success is] not due to a bunch of growth hacks. His content is a masterclass in the power of focus and creating truly unique content.

Sheehan writes about culture and how things change over the years.

He tweeted in June 2022…

Six weeks ago I quit my job and set myself a challenge.

Start a Twitter account. Share the things I care deeply about for at least 30 days. See what happens.

And today I’ve hit 100k followers. Thank you. To all of you. Truly 🙏

Off the back of that success, Sheehan was thinking to launch a paid newsletter.

Chenell explains…

David [Perell] got on a call with Sheehan and told him it was a terrible idea to create a paid newsletter because it would slow his growth a lot.

He eventually asked him to become a “Writer in Residence” for Write of Passage instead. David would pay him a salary to keep writing every day.

Sheehan took that offer 🤝

It’s unclear how much he’s getting paid, but it’s safe to say it’s a much better gig than working at McDonalds.

Btw, we covered David Perell’s story a while back…

$1.8 Million Teaching Writing

Back to Chenell’s profile…

[Sheehan] was trying to post insightful ideas with minimal context. And he was posting A LOT.

He was trying, but he wasn’t pulling the threads out long enough to tell a true story.

And then, on his 38th day running this account, on only the 72nd tweet he’d written, he had his first massive, mega-viral post.

Sheehan was basically throwing a lot of stuff at the wall. He had a lot of misses, but he kept going.

And eventually he broke through with that viral post 🥳

Chenell’s takeaway…

If you spend more time creating something than anyone else will, your work is going to stand out.

No one wants to sit down and do deep research to find out why Lionel Messi is wearing that specific shade of blue on his jersey, but a lot of people want to know why.

Chenell’s work is another example of diving deep.

She spends dozens of hours researching her subjects and pulling out insights.

I reckon there’s plenty of opportunity for other people to do this in different niches.

What if you studied the top creators in your niche and shared the rare insights you dig up? 🤔

$3500/Month via Upwork as a Digital Nomad

Hollie KingslandHollie KingslandFreelance editor and writer $3,500 estimated monthly revenue
Published November 20, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Hollie Kingsland is a freelance editor and writer from the UK 🇬🇧

From her Upwork (login required), she has earned over $80,000 since starting out in 2020.

Though the early days were a struggle, she has since built a business that allows her to travel the world and work from anywhere 🏝

She recently wrote

I never expected to be using a platform like Upwork, nor did I ever really expect to become a freelancer – much less be my own boss – but life took an unexpected turn in 2020 when the global COVID-19 pandemic put a hold on my travels and sent me packing back to the UK without a job.

As it turned out, the pandemic provided the perfect opportunity to pursue an alternative approach to work.

Now…

After nearly three years of being a freelancer, I’m making a comfortable living and I have clients who value my contributions and expertise. I’m certainly not making millions, nor am I working three-day weeks.

I’m actually earning more than I did in my last full-time employment.

Via Hollie’s LinkedIn, her last full-time employment was as an Individual Giving Officer for a company called Sense. A few months after she left, the job was advertised with a salary of £29,500 GBP (about $40,000 USD).

So presumably Hollie is now earning $3500 or more each month as a freelancer 🤑

How she got started…

In the early days, I was applying to jobs I was way overqualified for that were paying pennies… My first job paid me the grand total of $5… After Upwork’s fees and the exchange rate, I made £3.08.

Considering that was the first money I’d earned in six months, I remember feeling pretty chuffed!

The thing is that, for me, this approach worked. It enabled me to make valuable contacts, gather gushing reviews, and most importantly, it allowed me to figure out the whole Upwork ball game as quickly as possible.

However, she feels things are changing…

To find success on Upwork in 2023, you’ll need a bucket-load of patience, a willingness to invest in Connects to get your proposals seen, and the dedication to create an epic profile and submit stellar applications. But more than anything, you’ll need to be the real deal and have legitimate skills.

(Upwork Connects are used as a currency on the platform, to make sure people don’t submit spammy applications.)

💬 In reply to a comment asking if one should pay for Connects, she says…

I did buy connects at the start. I thought of the expense as an investment.

Starting a business always requires some investment, whether that be paying advertising fees to market your services, paying a web developer to create your website or paying for a course to consolidate your skills.

Hollie’s experience is similar to many others we’ve featured in this newsletter.

I’d say the recurring theme is: it’s hard before it’s easy.

Sounds like Hollie’s first few months as a freelancer on Upwork were a tough grind, but her willingness to endure such tough times is what made her digital nomad dreams come through 💪

This Habit Helped Him Build a $38M/Year Company

Nathan BarryNathan BarryFounder of ConvertKit $38 Million annual revenue
Published November 20, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Nathan Barry is the founder of ConvertKit, an email marketing platform that earns about $38 million per year 💰

In a recent interview, Nathan was asked about the most important habit he’s developed as an entrepreneur…

His reply…

Patience… someone described me as short-term impatient and long-term patient.

I’ve also heard this referred to as: impatient with actions, patient with results 😎

Nathan adds…

With ConvertKit it took two years to get to $2,000 a month in recurring revenue and then the very next year we went from $2,000 to $100,000

So Nathan had to be very patient during those first 2 years.

The key, he says, is to focus on the things you can control 👇

Say we’re tracking revenue as our goal for building a software company, that’s not actually within your control, that requires a bunch of [other] people to say yes…

… you have to set the goal at something that you can control.

Trent Dyrsmid, a good friend of mine, talked about his first business, he was selling IT services.

He knew the thing he could control was how many cold calls he made to pitch his IT services.

And so every day he had two jars on his desk. One had 50 paper clips in it, the other was empty. And he was done for the day when he had made 50 cold calls and he had moved all the paper clips from one jar to the other.

That’s something you can control.

(Btw, Trent sounds like the real deal.)

What are the key tasks in your business that you can control, and can chip away at day after day? 🤔

$1500/Month Directory Website (With A Twist)

David GutiérrezDavid GutiérrezFounder of 1000.tools $1500 estimated monthly revenue
Published November 16, 2023 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

OpenAI recently released DALL•E3, a powerful image generation engine that unfortunately rendered something called AppLogoCreator obsolete 💥

AppLogoCreator is an indie project created by David Gutiérrez. Apparently it was earning $500/month before it got crushed.

But David has bounced back strong, recently tweeting

My AI app AppLogoCreator was killed by DALL-E 3 💀

So I thought… screw it, let’s launch something FAST

1000tools was born

32 days after and it’s doing $1140 MRR 💸

Don’t lose faith and keep shipping

1000.tools is a simple directory site, with a twist.

David explains 👇

After submitting AppLogoCreator to multiple directories, I found it was getting no views/visits

I thought it made sense because if you’re 1 of 100000, who is going to look through the whole list?

So it crossed my mind, let’s limit that to 1000 and have people pay a small fee to filter out the baddies

To give everybody a fair spot at the top, we’ll rotate the list daily

You have to pay $6/month or $60/year to get on the list. That gives you a nice dofollow backlink on a site with rising authority 📈

The scarcity aspect is clever, reminds me of The Million Dollar Homepage.

Might be worth trying if you start your own directory site.

Looks like most of 1000.tools’ growth came via David’s Twitter and his successful Product Hunt launch, where his directory ended up #1 product of the day 🏆

His advice for growing on X (Twitter)…

I used to get 2 followers on a good day

In the last 28 days, I got 1245 followers

This has taught me one thing:

Shipping like a madman [and tweeting about it] is the best marketing strategy

💡 Another tip

One X hack is replying early to big accounts

Yesterday @ThePeterMick wrote a “Pitch your startup” post

My reply got the most likes and as a result, was shown first

Peter’s post went viral and 1000*tools had the second most visits in one day since launch

As of writing this, 317 slots have been claimed on 1000.tools, which adds up to $1585/month if we go by the yearly prices 🤑

Although I should point out a potential issue with David’s approach: even though people are paying for them, the links on 1000.tools aren’t marked as sponsored. Which goes against Google’s guidelines 😕

So the site could eventually be punished by Google and lose rankings. Which would make it pointless for people to keep paying for listings.
