Tim Stoddart started Sober Nation anonymously as a blog ~12 years ago, as a way to share his personal story of getting sober

In a recent interview, he shares that he’s earning $250,000 a year from the site, primarily via its directory of treatment facilities.

Tim says Sober Nation initially gained traction by sharing user-generated content on Facebook…

when I started [posting on Facebook], people would send me these pictures. Of their sobriety dates. And I called them sober stories. And so I would get pictures from people that I would just post them on Facebook and say like, Hey, Jane has been sober for three years.

And it would just go completely viral… And again, that wasn’t necessarily something that I planned. I was just letting other people speak through the site.

Sober Nation now has more than 300K followers on Facebook

What have you done for your recovery today? 

Most posts were affirmations, prompts, and the sober stories already mentioned.

But Tim soon realized that social media buzz doesn’t always translate to revenue

The breakthrough came when treatment centers started reaching out about advertising.

Tim realized he could create a directory to connect these facilities with people looking for help

But there was a problem…

I would say, yeah, sure. You can advertise on my website, but you don’t have a website. Like you don’t have anything.

I don’t even know what you want me to do for you. And so I thought, huh, why don’t I just create a service business that serves these.

So Tim launched Stodzy, his marketing agency to help these facilities with their marketing needs.

He did a similar thing after acquiring CopyBlogger.com, seeing it as a way to generate leads for his new SEO agency, Digital Commerce Partners

Orangutan Theory

Katharine Graham is a legend in the newspaper business, leading The Washington Post as it reported on The Watergate scandal back in the 1970s

She was good friends with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, and writes in her autobiography…

[Warren] later told me that he subscribed to Charlie Munger’s “orangutan theory”—which essentially contended that, “if a smart person goes into a room with an orangutan and explains whatever his or her idea is, the orangutan just sits there eating his banana, and at the end of the conversation, the person explaining comes out smarter.” 

Warren claimed to be my orangutan. And in a way he was. I heard myself talk when I was with him and I always got a better idea of what I was saying.

In other words: don’t keep your ideas to yourself.

Run them by other people. Those people don’t even need to respond. Just speaking your ideas aloud will help you evaluate them.

A variation on this is to explain your ideas in writing

I regularly do this to work through challenges in my business. After a few minutes of writing about the problem and possible solutions, I always have a much better sense of what I should do.

Kat only started her channel in September 2022, but has already amassed 40K subscribers and 3.2 million views with 125 videos

Impressive growth considering her niche and the fact that she’s not big on social media. (Her most popular social media account seems to be Instagram, with 2.7K followers.)

Kat monetizes her channel via YouTube ad revenue and Patreon memberships. Her patrons get access to monthly calls, a Discord community and other perks.

Kat’s $10/month tier on Patreon is listed as her most popular. I’ve checked and that can’t be faked, so probably 100+ of her 281 patrons are paying $10/month

She also has $3, $5 and $15/month tiers.

Meanwhile, Kat’s YouTube earnings are estimated at $100 to $2000 per month. 

All told, I expect she’s earning at least $2000/month from this project

Her story reminds me a bit of Karl Pilkington in An Idiot Abroad. That was basically a travel show featuring a guy who didn’t like to travel. Viewers enjoyed watching Karl’s reactions to uncomfortable travel situations…

How does AI Side Hustle help you make money?

AI Side Hustle aims to help you make money by selling digital services and fulfilling them using AI tools like ChatGPT.

For example, a brand might need sales copy for their Amazon products. If hired as a freelancer, you could use ChatGPT to write Amazon descriptions and deliver them to your client.

Or maybe a new business needs a logo. You could use an AI tool like Midjourney to create the logo rather than doing it yourself or paying someone to do it for you.

Here’s how the sales page claims the course will make you money…

AI Side Hustle seems to target beginner internet marketers looking for a way to make extra income or be their own boss.

The sales video claims it’s for people of all ages and is “lazy certified”.

I agree that it’s relatively easy to use AI tools to accomplish simple AI tasks.

However, it takes more work than advertised.

Not only is there a learning curve, but it can often take many attempts to get satisfactory results.

So it may be simple, but it’s unlikely you can make the kind of money advertised by being “lazy”.

70+ ways how to make money online (including easy options)Does the course creator have a good reputation?

It’s unclear, but something’s off.

I like to know who I’m learning from to determine their credibility and teaching style, but I wasn’t able to find any info on “Joe,” the course creator.

I was able to find another course he’s selling, called The Middleman Strategy, and noticed some odd similarities.

For example, here’s the “proof” he posted of earning $200k+ with the AI Side Hustle…

And here’s the same earnings proof from his other course’s sales video…

As you can see, it’s the same screenshot, which leaves me wondering if it’s even real at all.

Why not take a picture of his Upwork dashboard?

Plus, both sales videos mention how Joe’s method helped his Mom to quit her job and his brother pay off his student loan debt.

So it seems Joe is deceitful in his marketing.

Are students getting results?

Again, unclear.

Here’s a supposed student from AI Side Hustle…

And here’s the same student featured in his other course’s sales video…

When taking a closer look at the student testimonial videos, I found them unbelievable.

It’s not an unheard-of practice to pay for fake video reviews.

Though I can’t say for sure that’s what’s happening here, the other supposed practices from this creator lead me to believe it’s possible.

How much does AI Side Hustle cost?

AI Side Hustle costs $97 one time.

There are two optional upsells.

The first is a training on recurring revenue that costs $67…

And the second is an option to buy his sales scripts for $47…

There are no required additional costs as ChatGPT is free and Midjourney is optional.

AI Side Hustle Discount?

I searched for a discount or coupon code but have yet to find mention of one anywhere, and there’s no place to enter one at checkout.

So it looks like you’ll have to pay the full price if you want access.

Refund Policy

AI Side Hustle claims to offer a no-questions-asked 90-day refund guarantee.

The official word…

But it goes on to imply you’ll need to implement the training to get a refund…

To me, this seems more like an undefined action-based conditional policy, so it might not be as simple to get a refund as advertised.

I’d say it’s best to play it safe with this one.

AI Side Hustle is a video-based training with about 18 lessons totaling just over 2.5 hours.

Lessons are clearly labeled, step-by-step, and feature over-the-shoulder screen recordings.

The screen recordings are incredibly newbie-friendly and walk you through steps from creating a ChatGPT account to optimizing your Upwork profile.

A lot of the material is so simple it could be found on YouTube or figured out on your own.

Some is unique enough that there is a degree of value to be found.

There’s also a search feature, making it easy to reference specific material.

Becky Beach started her blog Mom Beach back in 2015.

The blog aims to “help moms make money online so they can stay home with their kids.”

It has become a great success for Becky, now earning her $30,000 per month

She shared in a recent interview (video version) how she got started…

I had this really toxic boss and he would tell me, I wasn’t a good employee… and I would just be so upset.

Becky eventually stood up to that boss and got fired as a result

So then I started my blog, Mom Beach, because I was just so tired of working for these people.

But blogging was tough in the beginning…

I was going to quit after a year because I wasn’t getting any traffic. I was just getting some from Facebook.

My friends and family were telling me I was wasting my time and I should stick to my 9-to-5 job. I was going to listen to them and quit my blog.

Becky earned just $1 in her first month and $100 after 6 months

It was a tough slog for 6 years (!!!) until…

When COVID hit, my blog just exploded. I started getting 250,000 page views a month and lots of traffic to my printables and my sales funnels were doing so well… so I decided to quit my job.

That’s what makes people invested: having some sort of personal why or goal, and irony too is pretty funny.

Some of Jenny’s suggestions…

Hooks should be visual and simple enough for a 10-year-old to understand.Every second counts in a short. You want high retention with viewers ideally looping and rewatching.Length matters. For her audience, videos under 30 seconds don’t perform as well. She’s found 34 seconds to be the sweet spot for her channel.Foreshadowing helps set expectations so viewers know what’s coming. Jenny dedicates a few seconds in each video to foreshadow the ending.She structures her shorts using templates like: hook, foreshadow ending, transition, problem/solution storytelling.

Worth noting that Jenny started out on TikTok, where she has 92K followers.

She eventually switched her focus to YouTube after noticing differences in how the platforms’ algorithms favored certain types of content.

But here’s the key thing

Jenny gained her expertise by analyzing and studying 1000’s of successful videos to uncover what makes them work…

Keila Shaheen is the 24-year-old creator of the journal, which was first published in 2021.

From a recent article…

TikTok users have gone rabid over her journal. Some have raved that the workbook is ‘cheaper than therapy’ and posted dreamy videos of themselves filling it out on a sunny day.

TikTok has indeed been big for popularizing the product: the term ‘Shadow Work Journal’ has amassed 1.6 billion views on there

The journal is based on the concept of shadow work by Carl Jung. It contains prompts and exercises aimed at exploring and understanding your unconscious mind.

There has been some criticism…

Shaheen isn’t a practicing therapist, and her traditional mental-health credentials are limited: She graduated from Texas A&M University in 2020 with bachelor’s degrees in psychology and marketing, and took a training course in cognitive-behavioral therapy… 

Shaheen’s background is in marketing and brand strategy.

Indeed, Keila’s knack for storytelling has seen her official page on TikTok rack up 276K+ followers.

Her response to the criticism…

I firmly believe everyone deserves access to mental-health resources and the chance to embark on a healing journey

Sounds like the journal’s popularity has been aided by TikTok’s affiliate program, which lets creators earn commissions for driving sales

Keila says…

One 20-year-old part-time student I emailed told me she’d made about $1,000 off of her video about the book.

Apparently 45% of Keila’s journal sales in the last 6 months have come via TikTok.

As I’m writing this, the product page (accessed via USA VPN) shows that it has 454,000 sales

The price of the journal on that page is $7, but the tweet above said the price was $17 (same as the price on Amazon). So they might be experimenting with the pricing.

Regardless, let’s say Keila earns an average of $3 profit on each book, and 454K = only 45% of her total sales… then her profit since launch would be around $3 million

Two takeaways here…

First of all, TikTok is insane for marketing, especially for products that can get some kind of emotional reaction.
