$170K From Practicing Photography

Charles WollertzCharles WollertzPhotographer $170,000+ lifetime earnings from stock photos Published January 8, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Charles Wollertz has been a traveling photographer for 10+ years 📸

In a recent video, he shares how he’s earned $170K from stock photography…

He says…

This did not happen in 1 year… this has been [culmination of] over 10 years… the average I’ve made has been $16,000 a year uploading and selling photos through these agencies.

Charles notes that $170K is the 30% cut he’s received from selling his photos on agency sites like Shutterstock. So he reckons he’s sold more than $500,000 worth of photos 💰

See some of his photos here.

Charles again…

Keep in mind that this is not my full-time job. I do this as a side job.

I use my extra photographs when I’m learning a new technique… This was when I was learning photography because I started from zero.

So I am happy to say that I’ve been through the journey and not only stock photography but photography in general.

What set him apart…

Not many people get 500 photos rejected and go back the next week to do it all over again.

Gotta love that grit and determination 💪

Also…

I was learning how to use my camera, where it’s best, where it’s not. So I took photos everywhere I went, I took my camera.

I was taking pictures of every single thing I could: outdoors, indoors, lighting, whatever was happening in my world. I was taking pictures of it and I was uploading those photos.

Now sure, $16,000 per year isn’t a ton of money.

But again, it’s a side hustle for Charles, one that has helped him learn a valuable skill and develop a nice passive income stream 😎

If you’re eager to learn a skill yourself, maybe there’s a way you could earn while you learn, and build up your own passive income stream over the years.

For example, if you wanted to learn music production, you could start uploading songs and mixes to YouTube and other platforms, and earn money via ad revenue and/or royalties 🤑

$20K/Month After 8 Months: “We Just Make Noise”

Afonso MatosAfonso MatosCo-founder of Journalist AI $20,000 monthly recurring revenue Published January 8, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

🤖 Journalist AI is an AI writing tool that comes with features like publishing directly to WordPress, automated internal/external linking and more.

Afonso Matos tweeted in late December that the tool earns $20,000 in monthly recurring revenue…

I started out in January with $0 MRR, 20 followers, no product and just a goal to make $20k MRR by the end of the year.

I was stuck with a part-time job and $0 MRR even in April!

… I finally partnered up with [Vasco Monteiro] in April and bootstrapped Journalist.

Oh and let me add that I was travelling the world during this whole time!

Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines

Afonso tweeted back in April…

Finished working on the dashboard for a hobby project called Journalist.

You give your business URL, context and niche, and it’ll generate high-quality articles

Then in October…

Journalist just reached $5k MRR.

🤑 Less than a month later

Journalist AI is making 8 grand a month

with one file and 125,231 lines of code

While Afonso codes, Vasco comes up with marketing ideas and memes to get the word around.

Like this cheeky tweet where they made the Journalist logo look like the P*hub logo. That somehow got 200K+ views 👀

(Maybe worth trying that for your business? 😜)

Vasco recently tweeted

“how do you market your product?”

“what’s your marketing strategy?”

“what are your main acquisition channels?”

BROTHERS

we just make noise anyway we can

find a platform (ideally one with browse features)

and be the one pumping more content in your niche

that’s how you win

Elsewhere Afonso mentions Facebook Groups to be one of the main ways they find customers.

In another tweet Vasco adds

need emails for cold outreach?

1. scrape niche FB groups
2. use Apollo

So that’s likely what they’ve done themselves.

Both Vasco and Afonso tweet regularly and Vasco also runs a YouTube channel. So they’re very visible online, and their followers tend to check out what they’re working on.

With that in mind, what can you do today to “make noise” and get your business noticed? 🤔

Lastly, Afonso’s tip for building a software as a service (SaaS) business…

i would tell AI companies to get as many yearly subs as possible, until your product is mature and not flaky

yearly clients are the ones who stick around and give feedback to improve

journalist has progressed immensely due to yearly customer feedback

$1M/Year Teaching People How To Use Software

Paul MinorsPaul MinorsFounder of Minor Workshop $90,000 monthly revenue Published January 8, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Paul Minors runs Minor Workshop, a productivity consulting business.

Per a recent interview, the business is raking in $1M+ year 💰

Paul says…

We’re an Asana Solutions Partner and Pipedrive Elite Partner.

(Asana = project management software. Pipeline = sales CRM software.)

We make money by 1) Charging consulting fees to set up and train teams on how to use these two software products and 2) Reselling the software or earning a commission for referrals.

Unclear what the split is with those revenue streams 🤷‍♂️

I’m guessing the bulk of revenue comes from #1, but Paul does have 34k subscribers on his YouTube channel and often has affiliate links in his video descriptions (example).

Those commissions can add up 📈

How Paul got started…

I first discovered Asana in 2012 when I was working in a marketing role at an e-commerce company in New Zealand…

I took the lead in figuring out how to set it up, and I trained the rest of the company on how to use it. My boss at the time paid me a bonus as it really transformed how we worked together…

A few years later, I had been blogging about productivity for a while but struggled to earn enough to replace my full-time income.

That’s when…

I decided to offer Asana consulting services as I figured there must be other businesses out there willing to pay to learn how to use Asana better…

My hypothesis was correct, and within a few months of part-time consulting, I was earning enough to replace my salary. I started offering Pipedrive consulting as well.

He adds…

I didn’t realize it at the time, but my employer had helped me to validate my idea, and the experience demonstrated that there was value to be captured in this space.

This just goes to show that good business ideas could be hiding in plain sight in a previous experience you’ve already had.

Think about your current and past employment 🤔

Anything there that could be the seed of a consulting business?

Back to Paul, and how he found his first clients…

I listed my services on Clarity.fm (a dial an expert service). Clients would search for an Asana consultant and find my listing.

I even made free calls with friends to boost my listing and get reviews. This was a great way to validate that there was a demand for my expertise.

Nowadays…

In a typical month, we’ll make about $90,000 in sales from consulting and subscription fees… the business is very profitable. My biggest costs are the contractors on my team, which come in at around $14,000 per month…

The margin is around 80% [around $70K+/month].

Paul has kept things pretty simple, no crazy business model or fancy marketing hacks.

He found something he could do well, and has been chipping away at it consistently for several years.

That’s how most successful businesses are built 💪

Dropping Her Kindle Led to a $50K/Month Business

Lou RiceLou RiceFounder of Strapsicle $50,000 monthly revenue Published January 4, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Lou Rice is the founder of Strapsicle, which sells innovative silicone straps for e-readers like the Kindle for comfortable one-handed reading 🖐

According to a recent interview, the business earns $50,000 per month 🤯

Which is incredible for 2 reasons…

They started the business less than two years ago (source)Who knew there was such demand for this kind of product?

🚀 The origin story…

Lou Rice was breastfeeding her son Archie one night when disaster struck—she dropped her Kindle on his head!

[Next Day], Ben [Lou’s husband] fashioned a silicone strap with staples to attach Lou’s Kindle to her hand…

After positive initial testing, Ben and Lou explored whether there were any similar products on the market and found very few competitors.

Next…

Luckily, they had an existing manufacturing contact in China through a friend to produce prototypes and ultimately fulfill inventory orders.

It took 2-3 rounds of back and forth with the factory to perfect the design, dimensions, tension, and sizing of the very first Strapsicle strap.

🗣 Lou explains how they got the word out…

We decided to launch and give it away for free and people just paid shipping… It was a bit unconventional.

She posted on her LinkedIn and in some relevant Facebook groups…

It went absolutely nuts… like hundreds of comments, loads of support, and then people started buying.

That gave them some leverage…

These people only paid the shipping costs, and they were only asked to provide feedback about the strap.

This approach allowed Lou and Ben to begin building community and start a dialogue with real customers using Strapsicle on their Kindles. Plus, it enabled gathering user-generated content and reviews to aid subsequent marketing efforts.

Then 👇

Lou soon stumbled upon BookTok – an engaged subculture on TikTok obsessed with reading… BookTok participants were an ideal target market…

She reached out to lots of micro-influencers, offered them free samples to try, and provided discount codes they could share with their followers to drive sales…

This micro-influencer strategy combined with the initial free giveaway enabled Strapsicle to gain significant organic traction in just its first 3 months in business.

At some point they also started selling on Amazon, and now they’re doing $50,000 in monthly revenue 💰

Last words from Lou…

You’ve just gotta keep going. You will not be able to see the wood for the trees for at least the first year. It’ll feel like you’re a hot mess. I still feel like that.

But you just keep going and eventually you will start to see traction.

So Lou dropping her Kindle led to a $50k/month business.

Have you had any mishaps lately?

Could there be a business opportunity there? 🤔

This Weird Niche Plugin Makes $8,400/Month

Leandro ZubrezkiLeandro ZubrezkiFounder of Notion2Sheets $8,400 monthly revenue Published January 4, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Leandro Zubrezki is the founder of Notion2Sheets.

It’s a “Google Workspace Add-On” that lets you sync your Notion databases with Google Sheets, so you can use the power of both platforms 💪

I didn’t think there’d be much demand for such a niche product, but according to a recent interview Notion2Sheets is earning $8,400/month 🤑

In the interview, Leandro shares…

I was a freelance software developer for 8 years, but I decided it was time to pursue my long-overdue wish of building my own products.

💡 How he got the idea…

In May 2021, Notion released the beta of their public API… I knew Notion before but never invested too much in the product…

I deep dived into the product itself, and communities like Reddit and Facebook groups to better understand users and realized that syncing databases with Sheets would enable some workflows that were currently not possible otherwise.

📣 How he spread the word…

The marketing strategy revolved heavily around social media engagement.

Participated in relevant discussions by replying to questions and mentioning my product if relevant.

Sharing brief videos and screenshots showcasing the capabilities of the tool further boosted visibility.

💰 Monetization…

Initially, the tool was free. However, after introducing paid plans, it took two months to acquire my first 10 paying customers.

Growth has always been organic, I am active on Reddit, Twitter, Facebook Groups and where Notion users hang and try to provide value to them, mentioning Notion2Sheets when appropriate.

We often share stories in this newsletter of people “scratching their own itch.”

But Leandro didn’t build Notion2Sheets to solve a problem he experienced himself.

Instead, he dove into an online community in search of a common problem that he could help solve 🧐

What communities are you involved with or interested in?

Try out Leandro’s approach there, see if there’s an opportunity to provide a useful product or service.

Mining Sci-Fi Novels for Billion Dollar Business Ideas

I heard about a website called Technovelgy via Steph Smith on a recent episode of the My First Million podcast 🎙

Tagline of the site…

Explore the inventions, technology and ideas of science fiction writers at Technovelgy (that’s tech-novel-gee!) – over 3,800 are available.

Steph explains that Packy McCormick then…

… took this very outdated HTML site that’s hard to navigate, and he put it into this database… so it basically takes all the ideas – not just the books but the ideas within these sci-fi novels – and says “does it exist today?”

And so you have this Google Sheet with 3,500+ ideas from sci-fi novels going back to 1634 🤯

Some of those ideas have since become reality.

📝 Packy writes

Jonathan Swift foresaw 3D modeling, search engines, biofuels, and even floating rocks in Gulliver’s Travels, way back in 1726?

… Ephraim Chambers wrote about humanoid robots nearly 300 years ago in 1727’s Cyclopaedia

… When Jeff Bezos walked through the logic behind selling books online in this legendary 1997 interview, he looked insanely prescient. But H.G. Wells imagined e-commerce 98 years earlier in When the Sleeper Wakes (and remote work, handheld video players, a proto-internet, and more).

In other words, the ideas found in sci-fi novels are often way ahead of their time 😵‍💫

Browse through the database – aka The Sci-Fi Idea Bank – and you might find an idea from 100 years ago that could be feasible with modern technology.

💰 As Packy puts it…

If history is a guide, there are billion-dollar-startups hiding all over the Sci-Fi Idea Bank.

$4,000/Month After Getting Laid Off From His 9-to-5

Paul van OijenPaul van OijenFounder of Incomparable $4000 monthly revenue Published January 2, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Paul van Oijen is the founder of Incomparable, which he describes as…

A tiny design studio helping you build big software.

📝 In a recent article, he writes

I reckon a lot of you are familiar with — and probably bored to death by — the idea of the “productized” consultancy by now…

As a long-time freelancer I’d been intrigued by the idea of “productizing” myself for a while…

After being laid off from my 9-to-5 some months ago though, I figured it was worth the risk to take the plunge.

Paul mentions DesignJoy, a famous productized design service that earns $100K/month 🤯

But Paul noticed something about the “agency subscription” business model…

while the market was in fact quite saturated… [existing providers] were largely focused on marketing design. Landing pages, email, copywriting, leaflets, etc.

There was a gap in the market for a purely product-focused setup, backed by 10+ years of experience in the industry.

Which is exactly where I’ve managed to carve out a niche for myself (and my occasional front-end development partner).

To the point where Paul is now earning $4000 per month 🤑

He says Twitter (X) “been straight up garbage for leads” but…

LinkedIn has been the best source of traffic bar none…

I made it my objective to post at least twice a week, sharing insights, new updates, and generally connecting with my audience.

See his posts on LinkedIn 👈

I like how Paul saw a business model that worked well for someone else, put his own spin on it, and is now reaping the rewards.

As you’re reading the stories in this newsletter, think about how you could tweak the ideas / business models / marketing strategies to work for you 🤔

Keep experimenting and you’ll eventually hit the jackpot.

1 Percent Better Each Day

📖 From the book Atomic Habits by James Clear…

The difference a tiny improvement can make over time is astounding. Here’s how the math works out: if you can get 1 percent better each day for one year, you’ll end up thirty-seven times better by the time you’re done.

A mistake we often make at the start of a new year: taking on too many habit changes at once.

Try to avoid that trap.

Think about the one habit you could improve that would make everything else in your life easier.

What would that be? 🤔

What if you focused every day this year on getting just 1 percent better at that habit?

Back to the book 👇

Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.

The same way that money multiplies through compound interest, the effects of your habits multiply as you repeat them. They seem to make little difference on any given day and yet the impact they deliver over the months and years can be enormous.

It is only when looking back two, five, or perhaps ten years later that the value of good habits and the cost of bad ones becomes strikingly apparent.

I quit my last job back in 2010, which means this is my 14th year working for myself 🥳

Earnings my first year: $10,044Earnings my last year: $306,840

That’s the effect of my habits multiplying over time 📈

You can do similar.

Franco Valdes is the founder of Carta Maps, software that lets you build custom maps and embed them anywhere 🗺

For example, you could upload a list of all parks in your country/region and Carta Maps would create a visual representation of them.

In a recent tweet, Franco shares that the tool has been making ~$1k/month for several months now 🤑

Elsewhere he shares

About 4 years ago… we had a client with a pretty complex requirement for their new website. They were a nationwide service-based company that offered commercial cleaning services.

They wanted to dynamically show coverage areas based on a list of zip codes or counties onto a Google map.

🎯 He helped achieve the goal and…

I figured other companies would want to display their footprint similarly so I bought a domain and planned on monetizing the API.

While he did build it…

As many other ideas I have had, this one too, fell short… I never really finished the project.

But then…

[In] 2022, a friend of mine was asking me about how he could plot postal codes on a map. Took me a minute but then realized I had already built this!

This reenergized Franco and he re-built Carta Maps as a complete no-code solution 💪

Based on another write up, it looks like he’s mainly been finding customers via search ads.

Also…

Churn is high but expected since I really haven’t found [Product-Market Fit].

He’s sticking with the project though and I can see him achieving much greater success with it down the line.

Two takeaways from Franco’s story 👇

First, he came up with the idea while working on a client project, which is a common theme among the stories we cover in this newsletter.

So if you’re not sure what idea to pursue, consider taking on some freelance work. A client project is likely to spark something ⚡

Second, think about the projects you worked on in the past, perhaps some you even abandoned.

Could you resurrect one and give it another shot? 🤔

This Turbulence Forecaster Earns $15,000/Month

Peter MurrayFounder of Turbulence Forecast $15,000 estimated monthly revenue Published January 2, 2024 by Niall DohertyContributor: Fardeen Khan

Peter Murray is the founder of Turbulence Forecast ✈

I first came across Peter’s website a few years ago, specifically this page…

Get a Personal Turbulence Forecast for Your Next Flight

I assume it’s mainly a service for nervous fliers, so they know how bumpy their next flight might be 🙈

This text was on the page back in 2020

My name is Peter, the founder of Turbulence Forecast. I’ve been forecasting turbulence for over 15 years, and I will personally give you a one on one briefing of what you might expect on your upcoming flight via email. I write each and every forecast personally, with about 12,000 written so far. Where else can you talk to the founder of a website every time? No questions asked refund policy!

The minimum price for a forecast in 2020 was $40, and the price was only $15 back in 2013.

Let’s be conservative and say the average price over the years has been $25, including upsells.

$25 x 12,000 = $300,000

Over 15 years, that’s an average of $20,000 per year 🤑

So Peter was likely earning at least $20k/year by writing personalized turbulence forecasts for nervous fliers.

(Btw, to have written 12,000 such forecasts in 15 years, he’d be fulfilling about 15 orders each week.)

Best I can tell, for a long time the email service was the main way Peter’s site made money 🧐

But now they also offer a Turbulence Forecast iOS app, free to download, with lots of in-app purchases.

SensorTower (free account required) estimates that app to be earning $10K/month 💰

The site also makes money nowadays via subscriptions and donations.

They get about 100k visitors per month and rank #1-2 on Google for terms like…

Oh, and it’s no longer a one-man show: Peter has been hiring help along the way.

All told, I expect Turbulence Forecast is earning at least $15,000 per month nowadays, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s actually double that 😎

Such a weird little niche business.

Gotta love it 😍
