$20,000/Month Reading Reddit Posts Aloud

Am I The Jerk?Am I The Jerk?YouTube Channel & Podcast $20,000 estimated monthly revenue Published February 8, 2024 by Niall DohertyContributor: Fardeen Khan

Check out this video on YouTube 👇

Entitled Mother DEMANDS I give MY HOUSE to her because my sister is Pregnant – EntitledPeople Reddit…

It’s basically 15 minutes of someone reading out this popular Reddit thread with video game footage in the background.

The video has almost 10 million views in less than 2 years 🤯

It’s on a channel called Am I The Jerk?, described as…

Voice actors acting out Reddit stories and adding insight / commentary

The channel only started in October 2021 and already has more than 1.1 million subscribers 📈

Here’s their first video, same idea…

They’ve pumped out 3400 videos like that so far, which is an average of 4.1 per day 💪

They have a podcast with the same content, and that somehow has racked up 9900 ratings on Spotify so apparently a lot of people are listening to it.

Social Blade estimates the YouTube channel to be earning as much as $100K/month from ads, but that’s best-case scenario.

I’m guessing they’re earning more like $20K/month on average 💰

They also have a sister channel called Am I The Genius?, which follows the same model but for different types of Reddit posts.

That one could easily be earning $5K/month 🤑

Next, check out this video from coder Lewis Menelaws…

I Created a Bot That Makes Reddit Videos…

He noticed the popularity of these types of videos on social media and created Reddit Video Maker Bot, a free tool that lets you easily create such videos yourself.

The voice that the tool outputs is computer generated 🤖 so it doesn’t sound as good as a voice actor.

But even videos with the obvious bot voice can get a lot of views, like this one posted a couple of weeks ago on TikTok, 3.4 million views already…

My brother-in-law keeps making fun of me and says I look like a girl

Here’s an idea if you’re a developer 👇

Create a version of Reddit Video Maker Bot that uses the latest AI voice solutions from Eleven Labs. Sounds way better than the typical bot voice.

Or if you’re really ambitious: let people create a voice model using their uploaded voice samples, so the bot sounds like them reading out the text 🤓

$1M/Year Asking People How Much Money They Make

Hannah & JamesHannah & JamesFounders of Salary Transparent Street $1 Million annual revenue Published February 5, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Hannah Williams and James Daniels are the couple behind Salary Transparent Street 💰

They started in 2021 by posting TikTok interviews with people on the street, asking how much money they make.

And last year alone the business apparently did $1 million in revenue, mainly from partnerships with companies like Indeed and Capital One 😳

In a recent interview, Hannah reveals how they got started…

I found out that I was underpaid at my job.

In 2021, I started a new job as a senior data analyst and I was making $90,000.

Shortly after starting the job, my only other colleague on my team was let go, and all his responsibilities became my responsibilities… I realized that I was probably underpaid… As I did more market research, I found out that I was underpaid about $20,000 to $25,000, compared to what my peers were making in my market.

When I asked for a raise, I was denied.

🧐 So she went looking for another job, and eventually landed an interview…

I had done all my market research, I knew that I could earn between $100,000 to $120,000. I was going to ask for $105,000, but I didn’t know what the company’s budget was…

I had nothing to lose so I asked, “Would you mind sharing the budget with me?”

She [HR] was like, “Our budget is about $115,000.” I said, “Perfect, that sounds great to me.”

💡 That was a light bulb moment for Hannah…

Even though I felt like I’d done a lot of market research… I was still going to ask for $10,000 less than they were offering. And they weren’t going to tell me that they had saved $10,000 on me—they weren’t going to offer that to me in goodwill.

Then…

I had seen some people doing street interviews, and I was like, it might be a really cool idea to just go ask people on the street how much they make… And so I got my husband to come out with me in Georgetown one day, and we filmed it. It went viral. And the rest is history.

🤑 Monetizing with partnerships works well for them…

Choosing not to sell anything to our audience and making sure everything is free is a very deliberate choice that we made to build trust with our audience. Because as a consumer of content, I hate being sold to.

An early partner video they did for Indeed…

We went to Indeed HQ and interviewed Indeedians!…

So it’s just more free content posted to their usual channels, but highlighting the brand they’ve partnered with.

Hannah’s career advice at the end of another video 👀

Say yes to a lot of opportunities that make you uncomfortable. That’s the best way to learn and the best way to figure out what you like to do and what you don’t like to do.

I reckon there’s lots of opportunity to emulate Salary Transparent Street.

The same concept could work well in other countries and languages. Or you could niche down to a specific industry or profession.

The other day I saw a finance app in the UK 🇬🇧 asking people in London how much money they make. Their video has 80k likes, and it’s not even their main thing.

Alternatively, you could try building a niche website showing salary info.

$50K/Month From Only 8 Customers

Austin AmbroziAustin AmbroziCo-founder of Doxci $50,000 monthly recurring revenue Published February 5, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Ever heard of Doxci? 🧐

They sell fancy-sounding software…

Doxci uses Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to automatically read, process, and complete tasks associated with enterprise documents.

In an interview last year, Doxci co-founder Austin Ambrozi revealed that the business was earning $50,000 per month from just 8 customers within 2 years of launch 🚀

Austin explains…

One of our clients is an insurance company.

They get all of their applications for coverage to a designated email inbox. Typically, whenever someone applies for insurance, they send in some supplementary documents, you know, a proof of address, driver’s license, a couple of things like that.

So, Doxci will monitor the email inbox. It will read whenever an email comes in for applying for coverage… It’ll read each of the corresponding documents. It’ll then calculate a rate that can be offered to the prospect based on the information provided.

And then… it’ll automatically draft an email back to them saying, “Hey, you know, this is the rate that we can offer you. If you submit X, Y, and Z pieces of additional information, we might be able to offer you a better rate.”

It sends the email, and that whole process is now automated and doesn’t require human involvement at all.

Yeah, not the easiest product to build.

But the interesting part to me is that they only have 8 customers.

So they’re charging an average of $6250/month per customer 🤯

They don’t even have a pricing page on their website; looks like you have to book a consultation to get that info.

Goes to show that you don’t need a lot of customers to make a lot of money.

As long as you’re solving a painful enough problem for customers with plenty of money to spend, the sky’s the limit 📈

His $500,000 Exit After 6 Failed Businesses

Ash ReadAsh ReadFounder of Living Cozy $20,000+ monthly revenue Published February 5, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Ash Read founded a niche website called Living Cozy, described as “your go-to source for modern homeware and furniture brands” 🏡

Per a recent profile, the site was earning “tens of thousands of dollars per month” – so $20,000+ monthly revenue – before Ash sold it last year.

He apparently sold it for a “6-figure deal,” and I’m guessing that amounts to at least $500,000 🤑

How it all began…

Read started at age 18 with his first software company and kept trying businesses as side gigs over the next decade.

For his day job, he worked in content marketing and SEO for software companies.

Ash ended up launching 6 software companies before starting Living Cozy, but none of them took off 😕

He writes…

It seemed like software was the easiest route to go from zero to 1 and build something but in reality playing to my strengths was the best route.

His strengths were content marketing and SEO, skills he honed at his day job.

So…

In 2020… he started a new [side] project: compiling a curated list of e-commerce brands in the home goods space…

In one weekend, he built a website using Webflow, a no-code platform. He called it Living Cozy.

And…

He made his first revenue six weeks later when a user purchased bedding through an affiliate link on his site.

📝 Ash writes…

That was a really big moment. It made me believe, if I can get more traffic to this website I can drive revenue.

Then…

After about six months, Living Cozy was getting tens of thousands of pageviews, and by the end of 2020, Read felt like it was truly taking off.

Ash ran Living Cozy as a side project for a couple of years, which was tough…

The time constraints were a huge challenge, he said.

“The way I got over this challenge was by being ruthless with prioritization and only focusing on the tasks that I knew would scale the business”

🥳 He finally quit his day job in November 2022…

That shift enabled him to focus on building deeper relationships with brands. The company already had affiliate relationships with about 100 brands

Ash tweeted last September…

Living Cozy has been acquired.

The internet is flooded with content and Living Cozy managed to stand out by doing things the right way and taking no shortcuts.

Last words from Ash…

It took me quite a long time to learn to actually just lean into your strengths when you’re building a business.

His strengths were things he was already doing well at his day job.

Do you have a strength like that you can lean into? 🤔

How To Get Rich With GPTs

OpenAI recently announced the launch of the GPT Store 🥳

That’s basically an app store for ChatGPT, where anyone can create their own apps that enhance ChatGPT’s functionality.

Simple example: there’s a GPT called YouChat that lets you chat with any YouTube video 💬

(Note that ChatGPT Plus is required to build your own GPTs and use those created by others. That costs $20/month.)

Here’s an 81-minute video from Liam Ottley breaking down the significance of the GPT Store and showing how you’ll soon be able to make money from it 👇

How to Get Rich With GPTs | Complete Beginner’s Guide (OpenAI Custom GPTs)…

Liam says in the video…

Looking back to 2008, when Apple unleashed their App Store, only those with app development skills got a slice of the millions the App Store generated.

The difference for us today is that the skills required to create for the GPT store and start making money can be learned in an hour or two, rather than 3 years of software engineering at college.

GPTs can’t actually be monetized yet, but OpenAI plans to launch a “builder revenue program in Q1. So hopefully within the next few weeks 🤞

Liam again…

Since there’s going to be tens of thousands of people rushing to this new opportunity, the challenge is not knowing how to create GPTs, but how to create actually valuable GPTs that will stand out from the competition.

Liam lists 5 skills you’ll need to accomplish this…

Market Research and Use Case IdentificationData Sourcing, Preparation, and Curation.Prompt EngineeringDeveloping tools that enable your GPT to perform functions.Marketing

In the same video, he goes on to create a “stock investing assistant, based on the wisdom of Charlie Munger,” showing every step along the way 👀

He also shows how you can take your GPTs out of the GPT Store and use them as chatbots or apps inside of Slack, WhatsApp, etc.

To give you a better sense of what’s possible here, here’s another GPT that blew my mind 👇

Grimoire is “a GPT coding wizard” created by Nick Dobos, a former Twitter engineer.

Examples of use:

Pencil sketch + scribble = websiteSpeech to text appEasily generate professional invoices

Someone tweeted

I’ve been using the GPT Grimoire… which is incredible… I’ve been relearning Ruby on Rails with it as a teacher and it’s been phenomenal.

While creating and monetizing your own GPTs sounds awesome, I reckon the fastest way to make money here is to become a GPT creator for hire 😎

In other words: help businesses create their own GPTs to increase productivity.

Or even just show them how to use existing GPTs, set all that up for them.

Check out OpenGPT.com for inspiration, lots of crazy GPTs listed there 🤯

$6K/Month Business Within a Week of Launching

Ash MAsh MCo-founder of Repurpose Pie $6000 monthly revenue Published February 1, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Ash M, who goes by PersuasionProf on social media is the co-founder of Repurpose Pie, a tool that lets you “convert your tweets to videos automatically” 👀

In a recent interview, she shares…

We are at $75,000 annual recurring revenue (a bit over $6000 monthly recurring revenue) and we got there within a week of launching.

The market already existed. People were already paying a ton of money to [virtual assistants] for it. All we had to do was build the software and let people know about it.

She adds…

My co-founder and a good friend has a huge following on Twitter (LifeMathMoney, 380K+ followers) and his blog. He’s one of the biggest anonymous accounts in the X content creation space and I met him through my copywriting consulting firm.

So yes, they had a big audience to launch to, which surely helped.

But worth noting that Ash herself doesn’t have a big audience; she was able to partner with someone who does 😎

Ash says the idea for Repurpose Pie came about when…

[LifeMathMoney] wanted to grow on other platforms to get more reach and protect himself from a social media ban… While Twitter (X) is a great place to grow, social media companies can ban you at any time…

He found that it was extremely time-consuming to write, manage multiple businesses, AND create 3 – 5 videos for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube every single day.

So…

He hired a video editor to take his tweets and turn them into videos.

The video editor:

– Took his tweets
– Added a cool background,
– Used text-to-speech AI to generate a voiceover
– Added trending music to the videos.

Within a few weeks, his TikTok account hit 10,000 followers! The simple tweet-videos worked and he now had more reach than before.

But LifeMathMoney was paying the video editor $500/month for that service, and figured there should be a better/cheaper way to do it 🤔

He discussed this with Ash and another co-founder…

The idea was – that instead of paying VAs so much money… we could build something that lets people autogenerate beautiful videos and have it be posted automatically.

So they built and launched Repurpose Pie 🚀

See some of their launch tweets here and here.

Ash shares another way they found customers 👇

I reached out to 100+ Twitter/X influencers and pitched the idea to them.

Here is my exact pitch:

Hey there. I’m founding a new Saas – Repurpose Pie that takes tweets, turns them into videos, and posts them on Instagram/TikTok/YouTube automatically

This way, Twitter creators can repurpose their tweets and use them to grow on video-first platforms without any extra effort.

Here are a few samples for you:

[attached samples]…

Would you be interested?

She adds…

The response was tremendous (50% paid on the spot, 10% asked for an annual plan almost immediately).

👍 Ash’s advice for anyone building products…

Build an MVP [Minimum Viable Product] and get paying customers BEFORE you spend months developing the application. You need to validate the idea before you commit a lot of time and resources to something. Cold outreach is perfect for this. DM or email people about your product and give them a steep early user discount.

$0 to $27K in 1 Year From a Remote Island

Julien ColletJulien ColletFounder of Scheduled.so $27,000 first year revenue Published February 1, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Julien Collet is the founder of Scheduled.so, a tool that lets you schedule LinkedIn posts from Notion.

In a recent post, Julien shares that he launched the app “in August 2023” and took it from €0 to €25k ($27K) in revenue in one year 💰

I’m pretty sure though that he wrote 2023 as a typo. Seems he actually launched the app in August 2022, judging by…

His website looking pretty much the same last JanuaryThe @scheduled_so account on X being around since Dec 2022

😕 Julien’s previous attempt to build an app didn’t go so well…

Two months before launching Scheduled, I started Split, a Buffer copycat… I introduced this first app to a handful of friends, but they all asked the same question: “How is it better than X?”…

After two months, I trashed it and started using Buffer.

💡 While using Buffer, he came up with the idea for Scheduled…

I’m a fan of Notion for centralizing and organizing my content ideas. I used Buffer solely to schedule and publish on LinkedIn, but found myself repeatedly copying and pasting…

Eventually, I had to maintain content in Notion and Buffer…

Maintaining content on two platforms and the long-term switching between them was frustrating. It was a mental load I wanted to eliminate.

This became the first problem that led me to use my product.

Today, in developing my product, I stick to this principle. I identify repetitive habits or time-wasting activities.

A common problem isn’t always obvious, yet there are many.

Julien got traction by offering a lifetime deal (LTD) on the app…

LTDs are often underestimated compared to the pursuit of MRR [Monthly Recurring Revenue].

Without an established fan community, it’s challenging for a first product to become profitable with MRR quickly.

LTDs were a great way for me to generate cash, build a fan base, and sustain the first year.

In my first year, 70% of the €25k revenue came from LTDs.

That works out to about €17,500 ($19,000) 🤑

Utilizing no-code tools helped Julien build fast…

No-code was a great way to simplify the workload in the long run…

Initially, 70% of Scheduled’s backend was managed by n8n [a Zapier alternative]…

The major effort is in building the right workflow. Once it’s running, the maintenance cost is very low.

To end with, he says…

In a saturated market, differentiation captures attention and makes people curious. If the first people you talk to ask, “How is it different from X?” you’re not different enough.

Funnily enough, while researching this story I came across a similar product called Notion Social that’s making $750/month.

And we previously featured a Notion plugin that’s making $8,400/month.

So it seems there are plenty of opportunities to build tools for or on top of Notion 👍

One more thing about Julien: he describes himself as “a French solopreneur based in Reunion Island” 🇷🇪

That’s a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Mauritius, with a population of ~800,000.

👉 3-minute video to give you a feel for it…

What a place to build a business.

From Struggling Blogger To $10K/Month

Aisha PreeceAisha PreeceFounder of Out and Beyond $10,000+ monthly revenue Published February 1, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Aisha Preece is the founder of Out and Beyond, which she describes as…

A site dedicated to discover ways to make and save more money and explore different location-independent lifestyles that you can earn money from.

As of this 2022 interview, Aisha was earning $10K+/month from her site 🤑

How she got started

After working in banking for 8 years, I caught myself looking out the window.. wishing I was somewhere else… I googled ways to make an extra income and discovered I could be paid to edit documents.

So, in my free time after work and during lunch, I would edit university documents for professors.

This was my first taste of working online and it was incredibly addictive.

So Aisha didn’t start out as a blogger. Her first taste of making money online was straightforward freelance work.

That’s something I see all the time: freelancing as a reliable stepping stone to bigger things 📈

How Aisha eventually got into blogging…

I set up my first blog in 2017 and I did absolutely nothing with it because I got stuck in analysis paralysis. As many of us do.

But…

Towards the end of 2019, unfortunately my best friend passed away overnight and that really kind of shook me… tomorrow’s never guaranteed, but we think we have so much time to chase our dreams.

Then…

At the end of 2020, I finally learned SEO… and my first site went from 7,000 page views to nearly a hundred thousand pages in seven months…

And finally 2022 was when it all came together. And my first site finally now earns me over $10,000 a month.

Aisha’s site is monetized display ads, her own courses, workshops and affiliate offers 💰

From her About page

I now run 6 monetised websites, and a team of writers and create digital courses on side hustles and blogging.

💬 Encouraging last words from Aisha…

The fact that I learned all this despite being allergic to technology is a sign that you can MOST DEFINITELY, do the same!

I finally replaced my full-time banking income and I work less hours, where I want, when I want!

If I had to break down Aisha’s story into a blueprint, it would look like this 👇

Freelance firstBuild that up to replace your job incomeStart working on a higher level business on the sideKeep learning new skillsPersist through the ups and downsEventually break through

$63K/Year With a Paid Newsletter About Food Policy

Helena Bottemiller EvichHelena Bottemiller EvichFounder of Food Fix $63,000 estimated annual revenue Published January 29, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Helena Bottemiller Evich is the founder of Food Fix 🥦

That’s a premium newsletter which aims to be “the go-to source for food policy news and analysis, for insiders and consumers alike.”

📝 Per a recent article

In 2013, Politico recruited Helena to help launch its food safety coverage…

While at Politico, Helena saw the power of a subscription-based site and newsletter…

Writing for Politico Pro (paid) and Politico.com (free), Helena gained valuable experience in subscription-based writing.

She also saw that the paid site attracted a bigger B2B audience while the free side was more B2C.

Then…

In 2022, Helena made the bold decision to leave Politico and start a content business – Food Fix, a weekly newsletter for food policy news and analysis.

Helena’s motivation…

There was nowhere to go to just focus on food policy. It is barely covered by the mainstream media but extremely important. I knew I could fill this gap.

🚀 To get started…

Helena sent out batch emails to her industry contacts, letting them know she was starting a newsletter and directing them to a landing page to subscribe to an unpublished newsletter.

Then she began publishing…

Helena formally launched Food Fix in August 2022… All content was free in the first month…

In September, the Friday edition remained free, and Tuesday editions were available to paid subscribers, mostly professionals who need the information she covers and analyzes for their jobs…

Fortunately, Helena’s content and expert knowledge led to paid subscribers almost immediately. She made her first dollar within a month of launching her business and four months after leaving her full-time gig.

The article notes… ”a big part of her success is her writing style” ✍

Here’s a recent free edition of Helena’s newsletter so you can get a feel for it.

A paid subscription to Food Fix starts at $500/year. Helena also offers academia and student discount pricing at $300/year and $50/year respectively.

Food Fix apparently has 6,000 subscribers, but it’s unclear how many are free vs paid 🧐

Simon Ovens writes that 5% is a realistic conversion rate for paid newsletters.

But let’s be conservative and say Food Fix has a 3% conversion rate and the average paid subscriber pays $350/year.

180 x $350 = $63,000 in annual revenue 💰

Impressive for a 1.5-year-old niche newsletter.

And I like how Helena basically started a business doing the same thing she did as an employee: writing about food policy.

She got paid by Politico for 10 years to hone her skills and build a reputation, then struck out on her own.

What work have you done as an employee that could be the basis of your own business? 🤔

Hard Work Matters, But…

📖 From the book The Almanack of Naval Ravikant

It’s not really about hard work. You can work in a restaurant eighty hours a week, and you’re not going to get rich. Getting rich is about knowing what to do, who to do it with, and when to do it. It is much more about understanding than purely hard work.

Yes, hard work matters, and you can’t skimp on it. But it has to be directed in the right way.

💬 Reminds me of words from Robert Ringer’s book, Winning Through Intimidation

Have you not seen, with your own eyes, that working long, hard hours does not by itself assure a person of success?

In this regard, I often think of my Uncle George… This kindly little gentleman owned a corner grocery store and worked fourteen- to sixteen-hour days all his life. He never succeeded in getting rich, but he did get old.
