Google’s 293 Failed Projects
As of this writing, Google – or rather Alphabet, its parent company – has a market cap of $1.8 trillion, making it the 6th most valuable company in the world
Keep that in mind while you check out this website: Killed By Google
That site lists all the projects Google has shut down over the years
For example…
Google DomainsGoogle PodcastsYouTube StoriesGoogle linksLots of those projects had value but not enough for Google to keep them alive.
I know from personal experience that it can be really hard to kill something I’ve built. When I do that, I’m essentially admitting that I wasted loads of time and energy
But as we can see from Google’s example, even the biggest and best companies in the world don’t hit a home run every time.
Far from it.
And I think it’s safe to say that Google wouldn’t be so successful today if not for their constant attempts at new products.
And their willingness to keep trying despite hundreds of failures
Self-Taught Developer Earning $12K/Month From a Simple App

Benjamin Houy is the creator of French Together, an app to help people speak and understand French
In a recent interview, he reveals…
French Together started as a blog 10 years ago while I was studying in Germany and became my full-time job over the next few years.
You can see an early version of the blog from 2014 here
Benjamin writes in the interview…
When the COVID pandemic struck, I decided to turn my main product (an interactive ebook) into a proper web app…
Back when I was a kid, I learned a bit of C++, Python and PHP but never really got deep into it. Somehow, there was always a point when I would lose interest and switch to something else.
However, during the pandemic…
My SEO traffic started declining. I ignored it at first, telling myself it would get better. Months went by with my traffic declining a little more every month.
After a while, I had to face the inevitable: my traffic wasn’t coming back. What I took for a simple seasonal change was in fact a shift in the market.
I found myself backed in a corner with only 2 choices: let the business die, or reinvent it.
He chose the second path…
My initial goal was to take all the content and features of the ebook I was selling and put them in a web app…
After 2 months or so, the app was built and I was eager to get feedback so I contacted all the people who had purchased the ebook in the last 12 months and offered them free access.
Even after launching the app…
My income dropped. That’s because I switched from selling an ebook with an optimized and tested marketing funnel to selling a SaaS [software as a service], something I had never done before.
After a while though, I got used to SaaS marketing and my income started increasing… I’m now at roughly $12k MRR and hope to double it within a year.
Elsewhere he mentions…
The large majority of my sales and traffic come from SEO…
My funnel is pretty simple: people search for some French-related keywords, find the French Together blog and then either sign up for the newsletter or start a free trial directly.
Benjamin’s advice for others…
Don’t overthink it. It’s easy to spend years or even decades dreaming of starting, only to find yourself full of regrets. Start now with the skills and knowledge you have, learn as you go.
You don’t need the perfect idea, you just need to offer something people are happy to pay for.
I suspect there are opportunities to do what Benjamin has done but for other languages.
His app looks simple enough, wouldn’t be too hard to build yourself or outsource
Benjamin’s main advantage though was his 10-year-old blog that already ranked for a lot of relevant keywords. So you’d either need to build up a blog like that yourself or find some other marketing channel.
If you’re a developer, you could find established language-learning blogs and offer to build apps for them, see if you can figure out a revenue share

Building Veterinary Websites = $10M Exit

Adam Greenbaum is the founder of WhiskerCloud, a digital marketing agency for the veterinary industry
Per a recent profile…
In January 2022, Greenbaum sold the agency in a low 8-figure deal to Petdesk, which provides similar website and app services for veterinarians.
So that’s at least a $10 million exit
Adam says…
The best part of this story is that it was a bootstrapped venture, and I did it with almost no marketing budget.
It all started back in 2011 when…
Greenbaum launched a Boston terrier rescue and, with a background in digital marketing, built a website for it…
The site immediately began to grow, and Greenbaum started working with veterinarians around the world to help Boston terriers in need.
So he had some experience with building websites and working with veterinarians.
Then, a few years later…
When Adam Greenbaum Googled the best local veterinary hospital for his two rescue Boston terriers in 2015, he found a whole lot of broken links.
That was the catalyst for spending 10 months building the infrastructure of WhiskerCloud, an agency that builds, hosts and manages veterinary websites. In June 2016, WhiskerCloud went live.
How Adam got traction…
Built in Colorado published an article about Greenbaum and his new agency, WhiskerCloud. Within 24 hours, big veterinary medicine companies were reaching out.
Side note
Built In Colorado is an interesting site, featuring tech businesses in Colorado.
Is there a similar site for your local area? If yes, you could try to get featured like Adam did.
If not, maybe there’s an opportunity to create something like this?
Back to Adam, and another thing that helped him grow the agency was influencer partnerships…
Early on, he became tight with two of the industry’s top influencers.
“Both owned and ran huge Facebook groups filled with thousands of people who were my target audience,” he explained. “By working with them and producing content together, I had their biggest fans falling in love with my company.”
He also featured influencers in WhiskerCloud’s content with custom graphics and posts. The influencers would then share this content.
Sounds to me like he built genuine relationships with influencers who shared his mission and values
Fast-forward to 2022…
Once WhiskerCloud crossed $2 million in ARR, he received multiple emails from venture capitalists each day…
Adam ended up selling the agency to PetDesk for $10+ million.
At the time of sale, he apparently had 2000 customers, which would mean an average of $1000/month per customer
I reckon there are still plenty of opportunities like the one Adam found.

Earning $100K/Year Only 4 Months After Launch

Ian Nuttall recently tweeted about two SEO tools he launched…
I’m pretty happy to have hit $100k ARR ~4 months after launching Keyword Metrics and URL Monitor.
This will prob be the last MRR/ARR update on these but if you’re a first time founder wondering if you can build something meaningful just learning as you go – you can!
Keyword Metrics helps you…
Find high-traffic keywords you already rank for and improve your content to increase traffic, rank higher, and double down on what’s already working.
URL Monitor helps you…
Track your URLs in Google, monitor potential issues and index new pages in bulk.
Ian has 36K+ followers on Twitter, and admits that this is the main way he gets customers…
It’s all from Twitter really!
Someone responded…
one example where building an audience then a product works!
Indeed.
And prior to creating his SEO tools, Ian built and sold a course for the same audience…
I also started with a programmatic SEO course to teach how to build large sites powered by data.
What do large sites need? An indexing strategy!
And so Ian went ahead and built tools to help with that
I’ve seen this approach work well time and time again…
Build an audienceFigure out what they needBuild products and services to serve those needsThe opposite – and probably more common – approach is to build a product or service first, then try to find an audience to sell to
That can also work, but it’s a tougher path to success IMO.

Freelancing Led This Dropout to a $50K/Month Software Biz

Yash Chavan is the founder of SARAL, software that helps brands find and hire influencers to promote their wares
Looks like they only launched in January 2022, and Yash reveals in a recent interview that they’re already doing $50K in monthly revenue…
Our user base is now over 200 paying brands who actively use SARAL to run their influencer campaigns. They work with over 13,000 influencers!
They have a database of over 150M+ influencers, and brands can reach out to them via the platform.
Yash tells the origin story…
[It] began with my work with clients when I used to run a marketing agency.
After dropping out of engineering college, I started freelancing and eventually landed some sales jobs at early-stage startups.
That’s where I was exposed to the cold world of cold calling and closing 1:1 sales. It gave me the foundation needed to eventually get into marketing.
Sounds like Yash evolved his freelance biz into that marketing agency and eventually…
We managed programs with over 10,000 influencers, but the process was entirely manual, which became overwhelming for me and my team.
We searched the market for tools to streamline our influencer marketing efforts but we found out that existing options were both expensive and too old.
This frustration led to my “aha” moment, realizing there had to be a simpler, more affordable, and user-friendly alternative. That’s when I decided to create Saral.
So it was his experience working with clients for several years that led Yash to the big business idea
To validate…
we conducted market research by reaching out to potential users through email and LinkedIn. I cold-emailed close to 2500 people in my target customer segment during this time. I got on ~35 calls with founders and marketers in the ecommerce space to simply talk about their problems and frustrations around the influencer marketing space (no selling here).
Additionally, I pre-sold the product to five early adopters who paid $99 each, demonstrating that there was a genuine demand for such a solution before we even began building it.
Yash’s advice for starting a business
A lot of founders mess up because they don’t know their marketing and don’t interact with customers. I’m on calls with customers almost every day.
Learn to understand people’s problems intimately so you can solve them with your business.
Also, I found an interesting tweet from Yash, posted right around the time he started SARAL…
Sell pickaxes in a gold rush.
You could say influencer marketing is something of a gold rush, and Yash built a tool he could sell to all the miners
AI appears to be the new gold rush.
Could you build and sell some pickaxes related to that?

MrBeast’s 8 Years of Failure

You know who MrBeast is, right?
Real name Jimmy Donaldson, he’s the biggest individual YouTuber in the world with 240 million subscribers
He was recently interviewed on a podcast, where he said…
I had so many years of trying and failing, trying and failing that I eventually accepted that I was just going to try and fail forever.
I started uploading videos at 11 and I was 19 when things started to hit.
8 years of trying.
Mike Donovan tweeted in response…
Compare that to most people’s overall lack of persistence and their attitude towards failure.
– Most people have idea, never act
– If they act but fail, they give up very quickly
– Few people maybe on Earth would continue to stick with something after 8 years of failure
It’s important here to be aware of survivorship bias
There are probably tons of other YouTubers who failed for 8 years straight and didn’t eventually succeed.
But we rarely hear their stories.
Still, it’s safe to say that MrBeast would never have succeeded if not for those 8 years of trying and failing.
Check out his first video on YouTube: Worst Minecraft Saw Trap Ever???
Nothing special. You could even say it’s a terrible video.
Here’s his 100th video, posted a couple of years later…
That’s not much better, and he only had 730 subscribers at the time
I believe his first video to go viral was this one in 2017…
I Counted To 100,000!…That’s literally him sitting in a chair for 40 hours straight, counting to 100,000
And he’d spent several years before that uploading hundreds of videos, trying out lots of different formats.
With that level of persistence and experimentation, it’s no wonder he became successful
Whatever it is you’re trying to achieve, persist and experiment for longer than most people think is reasonable.
There’s no guarantee you’ll be successful, but you’ll massively increase your chances

Blogger Uses AI to Earn $76,000 in Year 1

Casey Botticello is the founder of Blogging Guide.
He states in a recent YouTube video…
I started a brand new blog in January 2023 ($0). Using heavily edited AI content, I grew this site to $22,000+ in December 2023.
Casey doesn’t reveal the site or the niche, but he seems legit judging from the screenshots he shows in the video.
Plus, his Blogging Guide site is pretty well established
About the AI site, he says in the video…
The site earned a little over $76,000 which is a lot. I don’t know many sites that do that in their first year without using an expired domain or merging a bunch of domains or redirecting or whatever
Apparently all those earnings came from display ads, which Casey only had on the site from May
On the content creation process…
To be clear, it is a mixture of me generating AI-generated content and then going back and editing it myself… I primarily use Koala AI… [but] you could totally do this all using ChatGPT…
I would generally, at the beginning, spend 3-4 hours per article, which, when people hear that, they immediately say, “Well, couldn’t you write the article in that length of time?”…
The point of editing the article is to add value to content that’s being produced at scale. That’s how this site is going to grow fast and how you increase the content velocity…
I got that time down to one to two hours, maybe even just under one hour.
Crucially…
This is not a get-rich-quick scheme; it takes a lot of time and effort no matter how you do it. It’s just about doing it a little better than someone else and being able to scale it much quicker.
He also emphasizes…
Niche site selection is everything.
If you pick an overly competitive niche, you, as a new site without any backlinks or any sort of brand mentions, have almost no chance of surviving.
So, you need to find something that’s fundamentally underserved, and that’s the content that Google wants to index.
Things that haven’t been covered before. If you’re just regurgitating the same type of content, that’s probably not going to be a site that will grow very quickly, and it’s definitely more susceptible to algorithm updates.
To end with he says…
I’ve actually launched four new sites in 2024… I’m very confident that this works, not just because [the first] site is still working, but because these new sites are already ranking…
I come across lots of sites that are successfully doing this today when I’m just looking around at sites on Ahrefs.
So, people are doing it today. So, I would definitely encourage you to give it a shot.

Ranking & Renting Simple Websites For $1000/Month

Miao Rios is the founder of Blackbird SEO, where she builds local service websites and rents them out to businesses looking for leads at $1000-$1500/month
For example, Miao has this site linked from BlackBirdSEO.com…
Christchurch Concrete DrivewaysIt doesn’t look like anything special, but that site ranks well on Google for some relevant keywords. People find the site, get in touch, Miao connects them with a concrete driveway professional and takes a fee
According to a recent interview, Miao apparently has “over 45 successful sites already generating leads” and each one can earn “$1000-$1500 per month passively.”
So methinks it’s safe to say she’s earning a combined $15,000+ per month from these sites
From the interview…
Three months into her new side hustle, Miao Rios got an unexpected call.
It was from the Ministry of Education in New Zealand, inviting her to bid on a large demolition project for a local school.
Now it wasn’t completely out of the blue — she had built a website targeting local demolition projects — but she definitely didn’t own a demolition business.
The intent was to follow a “rank and rent” model:
– Build local websites
– Rank them in Google
– Rent them out to qualified service providers
How Miao chooses a niche…
Miao likes service-based businesses with high-ticket offerings. Something like concrete contractors, roofers, landscapers – not super glamorous but in demand…
For example, while general landscaping was competitive in Wellington, New Zealand, no company specialized in just concrete driveways. So Miao built a site specifically around that offering instead…
As for locations, Miao targets cities with 400K in population. The sweet spot where competition isn’t too high but search volume is strong.
Keyword research is key…
[Plug] your top 5–10 competitors into… your SEO tool of your choice. See what service pages of theirs already rank well organically.
Then try to match or improve upon that content to build authority and become that “one-stop shop” for your niche.
To build up the authority of your website…
Create social media profiles like Facebook pages and citations on directories like Yelp signals to Google that your business has an established local presence…
Miao finds blog comments to be an easy free option – as long as they provide genuine value to the discussion and include a link back to your site.
But that’s just the easy part…
Identifying profitable niche and location combinations is one thing. Finding eager and qualified service providers to rent your sites is another.
This step can make or break your success. After all, these are the “tenants” in a website rental business. They’re what turn your website into an income producing asset.
So it’s crucial to find and partner with reliable service providers
I see the rank and rent model as a great way to learn SEO.
Competition is low and you can gain a lot of experience fast by trying out different sites and niches.
Might be worth doing some keyword research for your local area, could be some opportunities there

Check out this Etsy store for a Canadian psychic: PsychicAmandaStudio

Real Answers & Accurate Psychic Readings
From Amanda’s website, which looks 20 years old and randomly plays music on some pages
I’m a God Gifted Psychic Indigo Spiritualist Born With Extrasensory Abilities…
I’m Very Accurate In All Of my Readings Based On Clientele Surveys & Testing Done At The ASPR Society With Over 20 Years Of Experience I Can Help & Guide You To Solutions For All Problems
Amazingly, Amanda has racked up more than 301,000 sales on Etsy since 2014
I checked her total sales number 4 days apart recently and it had increased by 735.
She has dozens of “items” for sale on Etsy – all psychic readings of some sort – starting at $4 each.
So she would have earned at least $2940 revenue in those 4 days. But probably more like $5000.
Since 2014, I assume she’s earned at least $2 million overall
I used a paid tool called Etsy Hunt to find out more about Amanda’s store, and apparently this is her most popular item…
Love* Reading* by Amanda 3 Question 98%Acct Predictions Tarot Card 1# Reader In Canada Past Present,Future SameDay Love,Fiances,PDFShe’s sold an estimated 47,000 of that service.
At $4 a pop, that adds up to $188,000 in revenue
Anyway, I decided to pay Amanda $4 on Etsy and ask her 3 questions about my business, while providing my full name and date of birth, as requested.
My questions and her answers…
1) How much revenue will my business earn next month?
So it is not showing a numerical amount but what it is showing is that within finances earnings and savings things will live up to and exceed your expectations positive outcomes are showing pursue of manifestation chart this will greatly help you assist you through the laws of attraction
2) Should I start marketing on TikTok?
Within utilization of social medias including tiktok this will prove to be positive and beneficial for you to increase monetary successes that’s what you do is your choice
3) Should I hire Daniel?
Within hiring this individual I do see good energies pertaining to this indeed you would have a positive outcome from what is being revealed
If you ask me, those are extremely vague and generic answers, all with a positive spin.
Oh, and my last question to her was a red herring: Daniel doesn’t exist.
Somehow Amanda didn’t catch that, despite her “god gifted psychic extrasensory abilities” and being “very accurate” in all her readings
I get the impression Amanda quickly reads and responds to each order, probably spending max 5 minutes per.
Given her lack of punctuation, she may also be speaking her responses aloud and having them transcribed automatically
Amazing to me that Etsy allows psychics on their platform, but I guess it’s fair game when someone like Amanda has 30,000+ five-star reviews.
Clearly lots of people find some kind of value or comfort in her readings.

This AI Video Generator Will Blow Your Mind
I don’t think it’s possible to overhype OpenAI’s Sora, described as…
an AI model that can create realistic and imaginative scenes from text instructions.
Scroll down that page and you’ll see a bunch of videos that were created by AI from simple text prompts
One such…
Historical footage of California during the gold rush.
The resulting video isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty damn impressive, something that wouldn’t look out of place in an old movie.
Think about how much time and money would go into creating a shot like that in the past. And now it’s possible to create it with a few quick keystrokes
Marques Brownlee shared his impressions of Sora in a YouTube video, with the reminder that…
It’s only been 1 YEAR since the Will Smith eating spaghetti video
In other words, AI-generated video has come a very long way in very little time.
Sora isn’t available to the public yet, so you can’t play around with it yourself
But here are a bunch more impressive examples from it…
A bicycle race on ocean with different animals as athletesGrandma cooking in a country kitchenAnimated short fluffy monster playing with a candleMovie trailer of a spaceman with knitted helmetSeveral wooly mammoths walking through the snowWhat might the implications of this be for your business?
Could you use it to create stock footage? Ad campaigns? An entire animated series?
Or how about using it to create such assets for established businesses, and charging them for the service?
That’s probably the quickest way to earn money from this once it’s available to the public.
