His AI App: $5000/Month 2 Months After Launch

@philz1337x@philz1337xAI Developer $5000 monthly revenue Published July 1, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

@philz1337x tweets

🥳 I transformed from a corporate job I didn’t like to building my own app, ClarityAI.co, making $5,000 MRR.

Per the site…

Clarity Al is a high-resolution upscaler that can enhance images and add details. You can decide how much detail you want the Al to add.

Before that 👇

🛠 I worked as a mechanical engineer in Switzerland and made $100k per year, but it was so boring. Everything was so slow, and my tasks felt useless because I was a small gear in a big system.

So, I quit the job and started to chase my dream of working more independently and on exciting projects. I learned how to code, how to build websites, failed with my first company, learned how to use Stable Diffusion, and how to build AI models and use Replicate.

Per his GitHub, he joined the platform in 2022, so he likely started coding around the same time.

💬 Back to his tweet…

Then I worked with @levelsio to help him build and push models to Replicate, as I was already experienced in Python. During this time, I had the chance to dive deep into building AI models.

He inspired me by showing that it’s possible to earn a living by working independently on varied, fun projects and even automating them.

Working with him was huge for me because I learned a lot about how to achieve that for myself by focusing on the right things.

@levelsio (Pieter Levels) is the guy behind PhotoAI and InteriorAI which collectively earn ~$90,000/month 💰

Working with Pieter gave Phil the confidence to do his own thing…

Now, everything is coming together. I combined all the skills I learned in the last few years and built my app…

Two months after launching, it’s making $5,000 MRR, and I can finally finance my life with my own projects.

I like that approach when getting started: working with someone who’s several steps ahead on the journey, helping them out and learning as much as you can from them.

Is there someone like that you could connect with? 🤔

Maybe Don’t Start Your Own Business

Ray Ozzie is one of those OG software entrepreneurs.

He’s had a couple of big exits as a founder, including one to Microsoft for $120 million back in 2005 💰

Here’s Ray quoted in the book Founders at Work

Frequently, people think just running from school out into doing a startup is the best thing to do.

But I think that getting some experience within a number of companies is really positive because you meet people and you start to develop patterns in your mind of the types of people that you need, and the types of people that you can trust, and the types of people you never want to work with.

In other words, don’t be so eager to go start your own thing.

It can be massively beneficial to work with and for established companies for a while. You gain experience and build skills while getting paid 🤑

And, down the line, it helps you figure out what your own thing should be.

(Btw, Founders at Work is one of my all-time favorite reads. Highly recommended.)

$13.5K Per Month From Her Social-Powered Food Blogs

Catherine ZhangFood Blogger $13,500 average monthly revenue Published June 27, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Catherine Zhang is a 24 year old from Australia 🇦🇺 who runs two food blogs…

Zhang CatherineDimSimLim

💬 In a recent interview, she reveals…

Depending on the time of year, my ad revenue on Zhang Catherine will vary, ranging from $4k-6k.

As I also do content creation, I receive income from paid partnerships, where one video can range from $5k-8k.

A partnership video she put out recently on TikTok 👇

If you love donuts as much as I do…

Back to Catherine…

I’ve been working on my blog and social media platforms for almost 4 years now.

Both started as side hustles while I had a full-time job, but after 2 years I was making enough to make them my full-time career.

From my online business and paid partnerships I make about $12-15k/month.

🚀 The origin story…

Growing up I had always loved baking and making desserts…

I studied food science and nutrition in university in order to become a dietitian. It was during this time I appeared and won Netflix show “Zumbo’s Just Desserts Season 2.”

From then on I discovered my true love for desserts and worked in restaurants as a pastry chef.

Shortly after I fell into recipe development and loved the creation of new flavors and ideas over working in a commercial kitchen. I began creating content and have now amassed a total following of over 1 million across my social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok.

So social came first for Catherine, and eventually she started blogging as well…

After doing some research into blogging, I realized it was a profitable market that I could tap into, which would help monetize the recipes I had been already posting on my social media.

🎯 And social is still her main focus…

In the current age, social media is the greatest weapon.

By growing my social media following and continuously trying new desserts and recipes, creating viral videos is the best strategy to gain new visitors to my blog.

A lot of content creators don’t realize the power of blogging and are unable to convert followers to blog views. And other food bloggers have yet to grasp the power of social media.

Awesome to see someone running successful niche sites without being entirely dependent on SEO, although Catherine says SEO is still important.

🧐 Her advice for others…

Things don’t grow overnight and they take time to build.

If you consistently put in high-quality work and effort, you will be rewarded in the end. Without the passion for my work, it would be difficult for me to be consistent.

Weird Upwork Hacks From a $60,000+ Freelancer

Thomas ImThomas ImUpwork Freelancers $60,000+ revenue Published June 27, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

👀 A recent video from Thomas Im…

weird upwork hacks that ACTUALLY work…

Thomas has earned $60,000+ on Upwork (profile), and it looks like he only started 18 months ago 😎

He charges $20/hour or more for tasks like…

Social media managementContent creationVideo editingGraphic design

🚀 To get started on Upwork, he advises doing “quick jobs”…

Focus on one-and-done type of jobs.

Don’t look for these long-term contracts…

If you’re just starting out, your goal should be to build your profile and get those quick reviews and projects.

To find those kinds of gigs in your niche, filter with words like…

QuickShort Easy

Another tip from Thomas: only apply to jobs that are fairly new.

Ideally only a couple of hours old at the most ⏰

Perhaps his best tip: set up a Zapier automation that will notify you of new jobs that fit your criteria.

That might sound a bit tricky, but if Thomas was able to do it, you probably can too…

Don’t ask me what any of [this] means; I do not know. I just found a video on it and I use it, so I’m telling you guys about it now.

A final tip from Thomas: never send a generic cover letter 📝

One way to show you’ve actually read the job post – which immediately makes you stand out – is to ask clarifying questions about the job in your cover letter.

Or spell out exactly how you’d accomplish the task 🧐

Built His App With ChatGPT Then Sold It

Andrew DavisonAndrew DavisonZapier Automation Expert $1000 estimated sale price of Export My Base Published June 27, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Andrew Davison is an agency founder who helps companies automate tasks or processes with tools like Zapier 🤖

We featured him in the newsletter a while back…

$6500/Month Helping People Use Zapier

An interview with Andrew from last November…

Selling a website after learning to code with AI

The website is Export My Base, a simple one-feature app that lets you export all your Airtable databases as CSV 🤓

Andrew doesn’t reveal how much it sold for…

While I can’t say the price, it’s not life changing by any means. However, just being able to say I had an idea for an app, built it and I found someone willing to pay money for it is really fulfilling (especially as someone who dropped out of a computer science degree)

The app wasn’t monetized yet, and judging by other projects listed on the marketplace Andrew used, I’d say his sale price was around $1000.

So not big money, but impressive nonetheless 👍

Especially since Andrew isn’t much of a programmer and he didn’t spend a lot of time on it…

Although I couldn’t code, I knew what code looked like, and I had an idea of how concepts like functions, loops, variables etc worked – in my head I could visualise what different pieces would be needed to make my app work.

Then it was a case of just describing that to ChatGPT and asking to show me code…

It probably took 5-10 hours to get the first version working.

Andrew even let ChatGPT choose the coding language and tools for him, which was how he landed on Replit, a coding workspace right in your browser with nothing to install.

🥳 That worked out well…

While I was working on the app, Replit launched its Ghostwriter feature which is basically ChatGPT in Replit, with the added bonus of full visibility of your codebase. It can suggest code, troubleshoot bugs and also answer general questions as you’re building.

Deciding to sell…

I thought about just letting it run, but decided on a whim to see if anyone would buy it. Scoring a ‘exit’, however small, seemed like it would be a good confidence boost and a sort of final chapter for my education…

I reckon this is fast becoming the new norm for building apps: someone who doesn’t really know how to code getting AI to do the heavy lifting 💪

Andrew’s advice for non-coders using ChatGPT…

Just get started.

Even if you don’t have any development background, just think about your app in terms of pieces of a puzzle (an input form, something happening to that data, an output etc), and ask ChatGPT – or Replit’s Ghostwriter – how you’d go about making that happen with code.

It won’t work at first, and you’ll get errors, but go ahead and feed those back into ChatGPT and it’ll help you fix them. With persistence you’ll eventually get something that works.

I liked Andrew’s approach of building a one-feature app.

That keeps it pretty simple.

Could you try building a one-feature app with the help of ChatGPT and Replit? 🤔

Both tools have sufficient free plans.

His Simple Directory Website Sold For $10,000

Olly MeakingsOlly MeakingsFounder of First 100 Users $10,000 sale price Published June 24, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

Check out First 100 Users, a directory of marketing ideas for software founders to get their first 100 users 👍

For example…

Send Twitter DMs to potential usersShare expert insights on TerkelSponsor a niche newsletter

Looks nice, but nothing fancy.

The person behind the site, Olly Meakings, recently tweeted

I sold my side project for $10,000! ✨🎉

Olly is also the marketing co-founder of Senja, a testimonial collection app.

💬 He adds…

First 100 Users was an early lead magnet for me

It grew in scope and eventually won Product of the Day on ProductHunt

It went from a basic @NotionHQ table → @softr_io + @airtable website with over 100 marketing ideas + 100s of tools listed

Olly first launched it on ProductHunt back in March 2022 🚀

But recently he’s been busy working on Senja, so he put First 100 Users up for sale…

Here’s the timeline:

✨ Posted for sale on Twitter 17/06
✨ Received 5 serious DMs including one offer at $7k
✨ Shared tweet about $7k offer
✨ Buyer DMd 18/06
✨ Negotiated over DMs for about 60 mins
✨ Sent Paypal payment link
✨ Payment received: sold!

Pretty good outcome.

The site served its purpose for Olly, likely landing him some users for Senja and now a $10K payday 💰

I’m thinking someone could create a bunch of other sites like this…

First 100 YouTube SubscribersFirst 100 Instagram FollowersFirst 100 Newsletter SubscribersEtc.

Research the big successes and document how they got their first subs/followers.

Like Olly, this could serve as a lead magnet for your business.

And you might end up with a nice payday from it, too 🤑

Site Owners Are Mad As Hell, Not Gonna Take It Anymore

Lots of online businesses have been hit hard by Google’s recent “Helpful Content Update” 😫

Now, inevitably, folks are moving away from relying so heavily on Google for traffic.

🎙 A recent podcast from Niche Pursuits on this topic…

Hope For Google Helpful Content Update Recovery?

Site owner Morgan Overholt listened to that podcast and responded

The question was posed if you were told HCU recovery was coming would you make a big push to improve your site?

Just to weigh in, personally, my answer is NOPE.

I spent Sept-January using every waking hour improving my sites. Because I was told it may only take a “couple of weeks” to improve back in October.

I shed so many tears. My mental health took a nosedive. My hair literally started turning gray. My joints started aching (I’m pre autoimmune, it’s a stress trigger). I worked 12 and 13 hour days for months.

I did everything from deleting 75% of my sites, rewriting 90% of the articles that remained. I deoptimized, I severely reduced ads or removed them altogether in some cases.

I paid for consults, I spoke to experts, I paid for expensive tools, I read reports, I studied hundreds of sites.

I did it all THEN. And yet, no grace from Google.

I don’t even rank for my own brand terms in many cases.

Morgan’s certainly not alone in feeling this way.

For example, the people behind sites like Retro Dodo and HouseFresh have voiced similar grievances 😕

Really drives home the danger of depending on one platform for the majority of your traffic.

Looks like Morgan has been doing much better since shifting her focus to social

And since January … Since I stopped listening to [Google] and chasing that carrot, I’ve been better off.

Quite frankly that’s the reason I’m still here. I use my time more efficiently now.

I’m a real business, despite what Google thinks.

I do not like to do business with companies that gaslight, mislead and waste my time.

She goes on to say that she’s no longer listening to what Google says, since their official advice to site owners has so often proven ineffective recently 😡

Sounds a bit like the advice you hear for people in abusive relationships: don’t believe your partner’s words, believe their behavior!

He Replaced His Friend’s Mum With AI in 80 Minutes

💬 Tom Osman tweets

I spent 1h 20m replacing my friends mum with AI.

He elaborates…

A family friend of ours has a successful business running Tours in London.

It’s a good business but the problem is that his mum who runs the show is tied to her desk, answering calls then manually entering the bookings into her booking software.

🤖 That’s when…

I built a voice assistant in SynthflowAI to take the calls instead so she never has to do it manually ever again.

The assistant knows everything about her business and will be able to make the bookings over the phone with zero human input.

On the off chance there’s something it can’t answer, the call gets routed to her mobile.

Synthflow AI is impressive, lets you build “human-like conversational AI voice assistants” … check out the video demo on their homepage 👈

Along the same lines, there’s this tweet from Max Brodeur-Urbas…

A YC batch-mate was quoted $16k from a consultant for a custom AI invoice processor

Their intern built it in 2 hours on Gumloop.

GPT-4o now:

– Analyzes any receipt sent to their Gmail
– Extracts vendor + amount
– Categorizes it
– Adds it to their Notion DB
– Texts their finance admin

Gumloop is a drag-and-drop automations builder, powered by AI.

I reckon one of the best online business opportunities right now is to become an AI Automation Consultant 😎

You’d basically practice using tools like ChatGPT, Synthflow and Gumloop until you have basic competence, then get out there and find clients, help them increase efficiency and cut down on costs.

As you work with those clients you’d likely stumble across recurring issues that could lead you to create a productized service or SaaS solution (ie. a much more scalable business) 📈

This Boring Quiz Site Earns $1+ Million Per Year

JetPunkJetPunkQuiz Website $1.1 Million estimated annual revenue Published June 24, 2024 by Fardeen KhanReviewed and edited by Niall Doherty

@staticmaker1 tweets 👇

“boring” quiz playing website.

founded by two brothers.

generates 2 million page views per day!

monetization via premium membership and display ads.

estimated revenue $1.6 million a year.

The site is called JetPunk, started by brothers John and Daniel Hostetler back in 2008 🚀

According to Wikipedia

The website was originally a travel agency-like website and its purpose was to search for airline flights, and afterwards the creators added a search feature for hotels.

By September 2008, the website began to display quizzes, beginning with a quiz that required one to name all 196 countries of the world.

By the end of the year, the quizzes began branching out into other genres.

In 2009, the website’s design had changed, and JetPunk had its first major change in the beginning of 2011 when it allowed users to create their own quizzes.

The quizzes became the primary feature and the JetPunk fish was introduced as the website’s logo.

Sounds like John and Daniel saw visitors engaging with the quizzes and doubled down on that feature 💪

The site now features quizzes like…

Countries of the World QuizWorld Capitals QuizU.S. Presidents QuizNBA Teams Quiz

Back to the original tweet, and the site is estimated to be earning $1.6 million per year from display ads 🤑

I ran the numbers myself via the Google AdSense calculator and came up with earnings of $94,000 per month or $1.1 million per year.

Either way, that’s amazing for such a “boring” quiz site.

Note that JetPunk does also have a merch store and offers an ad-free experience for $20/year, so probably bumps up the revenue 📈

Probably the biggest reason for their success though is time: they’ve been around since 2008 and have built up strong SEO over the years.

But this got me thinking about Tim Bennetto and all the traffic he generates to his site via simple free tools…

300K Monthly Visits From Free Tools

You could try this with quizzes instead of tools, create a few specific to your niche with the help of ChatGPT, pop them on your site and see what happens 🧐

Or perhaps you could offer this as a service, build SEO-optimized quizzes for client sites to help them get more leads.
