18 Rules From a Pro Copywriter
David Perell recently interviewed Harry Dry, founder of Marketing Examples.
David writes…
Harry Dry is the best copywriter I know.
He’s built a 130,000-person newsletter teaching people how to do it, and by the end of this interview, you’ll be at least a Green Belt in copywriting.
He then goes on to share some of Harry’s rules for writing.
A taste
13) Write with the delete key. Using fewer words lets you be more impactful with the words you keep.
14) The job of a sales page is to make a bold claim at the top. Then spend the rest of the page backing up what you’ve said… with a ridiculous amount of proof.
18) Great copy reads like your customer wrote it. Talk to them.

Sold His Simple AI Tool For $30K After 10 Months

Shahryar Rajabpoor (@devhe4d) tweets…
I just sold my first-ever startup, Summify, for $30,000
Summify is an AI tool that helps you “transcribe and summarize videos in only a few seconds”
Shahryar writes…
Summify started as my weekend project last October. I only knew how to code and nothing else. But I wanted to be a solopreneur….
I didn’t do any validation ( I didn’t even know what validation is ) I built Summify because I needed it myself – Scratching my own itch.
I just built it and shipped it and posted it on Reddit. I hope for the best.
Three days after launching, I sold my first subscription
![]()
This was a good sign that people wanted my product.
Although Shahryar knew how to code, he had “no marketing skills” and struggled to spread the word…
It took Summify three months to reach $500 MRR…
After eight months, Summify hit $2,500 MRR and then settled around $1,500 MRR.
To get that initial $500 MRR, he notes…
Reddit, Linkedin posts helped a lot.
I ran 3 iterations of Google Ads campaign for Summify, each 2 weeks that drove good traffic into Summify.
You can see Shahryar’s Reddit posts here, and his launch announcement for Summify on Linkedin
Also, at least one of his Google ads can still be seen here.
Last words from Shahryar…
Looking back, selling my first indie project was a dream I didn’t know I could achieve in the first year.
Now, I’m more eager than ever to keep building and learning new things.
This is a good example of someone learning a ton by shipping a real product, getting feedback, and constantly trying to make it better
Shahryar ultimately got paid something like $40,000 (app revenue + the sale price) to learn how to ship and market a product.
Also, it’s not like his idea was super-unique. Product Hunt is filled with doppelgangers
As Derek Sivers once wrote…
Ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions.

Shared Their Work on X, Then This Happened…
Sahil Vhora tweets…
Last month, my tweet gained significant attention, achieving:
48k+ views
350+ likes
200+ bookmarks
4k+ profile clicks
This has resulted in over 75 new project inquiries so far! It’s unbelievable!
Here’s the tweet in question, where he shares design work he did for a client whose startup got acquired.
75 leads from one tweet… that’s the power of “building in public” or “showing your work”
Another example of this comes from Lera Clipwing, who tweeted a 20-second video and wrote…
Guys at @lmsqueezy have a great [podcast] but they don’t post short clips!
so we took their raw episode and added:
effects & filters to make it catchy
sounds & zooms for dynamics
purple background & yellow captions to match the brand
To which the CEO of @lmsqueezy replied…
This is so good! Can we hire you?
That led to a shoutout in a popular marketing newsletter (130k subs).
Which resulted in even more exposure and inquiries for Lera…
I just had a call about our video production service with a person from a multi-billion dollar company.
Two great examples there of people creating big opportunities for themselves.
Sahil leveraged the success of a project he worked on, showed off how he contributed, and got a lot of inbound as a result.
Whereas Lera did some free and unsolicited work for someone with a big audience, posted it online, and reaped the rewards
It’s a good reminder that there are 2 main parts to success in business…
Doing the thingSelling the thingYou can be great at #1 but that’s useless in isolation.
#2 is what gets people knocking on your door, eager to give you money
With that in mind, ask yourself…
What work are you proud of?What if you shared or talked about it online this week?$40,000 in Year 1 With a 4-Hour Work Week

Check out this interview on YouTube with Jared Bauman…
Jared started with the Amazon Influencer Program back in May 2023 and earned $40,000 in 12 months, despite only working an average of 4.5 hours per week on it
Basically he uploaded a video review for every product he owned that was listed on Amazon.
When people watch one of his review videos and make a purchase, Jared earns a commission
So it’s affiliate marketing, except you don’t need to have a website or drive traffic.
Your only job is to record and upload review videos. Amazon takes care of the rest
Here are a few video reviews on Amazon to give you an idea…
Tape measureUSB adapterBookTo be clear: those aren’t Jared’s videos, just some random examples I found on Amazon.
But as you can see, they aren’t exactly high quality productions – you can record these on your phone – and you don’t even have to show your face
Sounds easy, right?
A couple of caveats though
First: to get approved for the program you need to have an engaged social media profile with around 2000+ followers.
However, Jared says this isn’t too hard on a platform like TikTok, where you can post a few videos, spend around $50 on ads, and build up a decent following pretty quick.
(Pro tip: get your cat to star in the videos )
Second: to earn $40,000 that first year, Jared uploaded 1200 videos.
Which works out to 3.2 videos per day.
Sounds like a lot, but Jared says each video took him only 7-8 minutes to make and he did them in batches.
Now you might be thinking like I did: how the hell did he have 1200 products to review?
Well, he started by reviewing everything in his house that was listed on Amazon. Then he reviewed items belonging to friends and family.
And now he just reviews the 5-6 new items he orders off Amazon each week
So his pace has slowed, but he’s still earning money from items he reviewed over a year ago, plus the newer items he’s reviewed.
Consider giving this a try yourself if you’re looking for a low effort side hustle.
As a bonus, once you get comfortable making these kinds of videos, you could branch out and earn more money as a UGC creator for brands

Built An App in 4.5 Hours With No Coding Knowledge
Riley Brown tweets…
OMG!!!!! 6 Days Ago I had never written a line of code in my life.
But I just deployed my first note taking web app with a back end that stores the data, using Claude, Replit, and Google Firebase.
Just brute forced asked Claude AI questions alternating between 2 accounts to get around the limits, AND STILL running out of credits on both accounts.
Just about 4.5 hours later I had a custom Notes app in the style that I wanted.
I obviously don’t have any programming “hard skills”, but my understanding of what is possible with code has increased 1,000,000%
(Claude is a Google-backed ChatGPT alternative.)
Riley’s tweet went viral and he followed it up with a 14-min video tutorial showing how he built the app
He basically gives Claude a couple of screenshots and a drawing, then it’s just back and forth to explain how the app should function.
Riley admits in his initial video
Obviously, if I was releasing a tool, I would want to get a developer to come in.
But the fact that I could [do it] in 4 hours; a lot of people spend four hours just coming up with ideas and drawing it out on a whiteboard when you could spend four hours just making a full on mockup.
And I could send this to friends that I trust and they could go in… then come up with things that they would want to change so that by the time you go to a developer, you already know all of the features that you want to add.
And then they can basically refine the code at the end.
I like this approach: come up with an idea, then use ChatGPT or Claude as a brainstorming and technical partner to build a prototype.
You can then get real world feedback on the prototype, to determine if you’re onto something and should invest in building out a full product
If you have an idea for an app, how about giving this a try in the coming week?
Business Idea via New Podcast Monitoring Software
Arvid Kahl recently launched Podscan, which is like Google Alerts for podcasts
Arvid says it transcribes every English-speaking podcast and monitors keywords.
You can sign up, specify a keyword, and Podscan will notify when and where your given keyword or product was mentioned
In another tweet, Arvid writes…
Here is my product, Podscan.fm, detecting a mention of itself on a show it is monitoring and then notifying me about it.
And now I get to share this amazing podcast I didn’t know about before with you.
Might be a useful tool to boost your own business.
Or you could start something new with this
How about offering a service where you monitor brand mentions for clients?
As well as Podscan, you could use tools like Brand24, Google Alerts and F5Bot.
You could also offer to keep an eye on your clients’ competitors, see where they’re getting mentioned
Then you could do outreach on behalf of the client, see if you can get them on podcasts or set up collaborations based on those mentions.
Of course, before you go too far down that rabbit hole, best do some riskiest assumption testing
Back to Arvid: we also featured him several months ago…
$10,000/Month with His Bootstrapped Media EmpireSimple Service Business: Zero to $15K/Month in 4 Months

Bohumil Pokštefl from Bratislava is the co-founder of Deal Harvest, which he describes as…
Deal Harvest is a social selling agency for LinkedIn, catering primarily to B2B tech companies with high lifetime values for clients
In a recent interview, Bohumil says they launched the business this past February and…
4 months later we got to 8 clients, a monthly recurring revenue of 14,000 euros [$15,000 USD] and we’re signing more clients… It’s working quite magically.
What they do exactly…
1. We gain a deep understanding of the latest trends and topics from your industry.
2. We conduct a 30-minute interview every month to capture your unique insights as a thought leader.
3. We create and publish the content on your behalf.
Bohumil explains how the business came to be…
I was using a ghostwriter on LinkedIn during my tenure as CEO at Kontentino. It worked fairly well… So, we thought we could improve upon this and tested our approach with [another business] for three months, which yielded positive results.
Then…
Our first customers came from my network of B2B tech founders. I approached them with questions about their operations, sales cycles, and LinkedIn strategies. When I introduced our solution, they found it to be a good fit with their needs and current trends.
Bohumil has a decent following of 6,000+ on LinkedIn.
His advice for anyone starting out…
It’s not about the idea; it’s all about execution.
You can have competitors and still win in the market by taking a slice of the pie. In fact, having competitors is a good sign because it means there’s a market.
You don’t have to be completely unique or one of a kind.
With that in mind, you could go offer the same service as Deal Harvest on LinkedIn.
And there’s likely opportunities to do something similar on other social networks, or even in podcast format
We recently covered a business doing a version of this for clients on YouTube…

His AI Tool Earns $10K/Month (But Not How You Think)

Remember PressPulse AI?
It’s an AI-powered HARO notification tool built by Elvis Sun that we featured back in December…
PressPulse AI basically helps you get mentioned in (and linked from) media publications
Elvis was at about $1000/month back in December, and he recently tweeted…
I finally hit $10k/mo.
Climbing from $1k to $10k took 5 months and nearly burnt me out.
Because it’s a totally different ball game.
The surprising part: PressPulse AI only makes $2000 per month directly.
Elvis is earning the other $8K/month via a HARO link building service
With that service, he’s essentially using his own tool to get results for clients.
He reveals how he grew the service business in a recent article
Two things you can read more about there…
Using an AI agent to build an email list of 19,000 prospective clientsPitching that list with personalized cold emails (example)But my key takeaway here: people prefer to pay Elvis to use his tool on their behalf, rather than use it themselves.
Even though it would be much cheaper to do the latter.
And I believe that’s true of many popular tools: people know they could get good results if they used it, but they simply don’t have the time
And so they’re happy to pay someone good money to use the tool for them.
With that in mind, consider using a tool like PressPulse AI to start your own service business
Elvis has laid out the entire blueprint for you.
Another idea here: have you developed your own internal tool or process that delivers great results?
If so, could you create a service business around that?

$3000/Month From His Directory of 400+ Job Boards

Rodrigo Rocco is the founder of Job Board Search, a directory of 400+ Job Boards
Per a recent write-up…
His main hustle is freelance, but he is also side hustling in a big way.
He has a total of ten side hustles, eight of which are bringing in revenue.
How JobBoardSearch came to be…
His most recent side hustle started when StackOverflow Jobs shut down. He heard about it via a tweet from Pieter Levels and got to work. Within five hours, he built a quick, ugly directory of job boards. Then he commented about it on the tweet.
Pieter liked and retweeted it, so before the day was out, it had some traction.
He hadn’t planned to make a business out of it, so he let it coast on the side. But then Pieter sent him a message two months later saying that he should charge job boards to be listed and add paid tiers.
So he did. And within minutes of tweeting about it, he had his first sponsor. That was 2 years ago.
Now, there are 419 job boards listed and 196 in the waitlist. And in April, he had his best month ever, bringing in $7,320.
How Rodrigo describes himself…
I’m a serial maker. I love it. Hopping between products keeps me motivated; otherwise, I would just get bored. Even now, I’m thinking about starting a little olive oil side hustle with a friend.
Per the profile, most of his income comes from freelancing and his business Villas Mediterranean, where he’s a co-founder
– Freelancing: $2k-$10k
– JobBoardSearch.com: $1.25k MRR + variable sponsorships (lately ~$1.2k)
– VillasMediterranean.com: $160k per year (average of $13.3k/mo)
– PropertyDescriptionAI.com: $58 MRR
Rodrigo’s scrappiness is impressive – he’s out there throwing lots of things at the wall, seeing what sticks.
A good strategy if you’re not sure what to build.
But IMO it takes a certain kind of personality to do this.
For a lot of people, it’s probably better to focus on one thing at a time
Know thyself and all that.

This Clever Strategy Helped Her Earn $3 Million Online

Ellen Yin is the founder of Cubicle to CEO, we covered her origin story back in 2022…
How She Turned $300 into a $2 Million BusinessStarting out, the business was a social media marketing agency, and Ellen was mainly working one-on-one with clients
Later she created and sold digital products and courses.
It took her ~5 years to get to $2 million in revenue
Per a recent profile by Chenell Basilio, Ellen has gone on to earn another $1 million in ~2 years.
But not from client work…
At this point, Cubicle to CEO is focused on being a media business first, so sponsorships and brand partnerships are a big part of the revenue.
After making this change in business structure in early 2023, Ellen went silent for a few weeks and was pitching brands to be sponsors. She said she closed $205k in revenue from brand partnerships alone during that time across 22 campaigns.
So the average brand partnership she is selling is around $10,000.
A key part of Ellen’s burgeoning media empire is her podcast
Another important part is the community she’s building, The C-Suite, which costs $195/Quarter.
Chenell writes…
I’m not sure how many members are there but I know she pre-launched it to 100 founding members at $100/year.
I’d venture to guess at least another 100 have joined since then at $195 per quarter, which would be around $88k in recurring revenue per year.
Perhaps the key to Ellen’s success is “borrowed traffic”…
Borrowed traffic is essentially getting in front of other people’s audiences. When you don’t have a large audience to start with, it can be hard to get going. It can take a long time to build that flywheel of growth…
Ellen used this strategy in the early days when she was getting started. She didn’t have a big audience, so she went where the people who she wanted in her audience were.
Examples of borrowed traffic
Chenell continues…
These all essentially come down to finding someone who has an audience of people who would benefit from your knowledge, and then reaching out to make a connection with them…
For example, [Ellen] is a big user of Kajabi and they brought her on their podcast. That’s one simple example of borrowed traffic.
Could you do similar to grow your audience and boost your business?
