A Quick Google Search Led to His $30K/Year Side Hustle

Marshall Atkinson attended a conference last year where one of the speakers Brian Fanzo talked about Midjourney, the AI image generation tool
Marshall writes…
Brian wasn’t even off the stage when I thought, “What professional graphic designers need is a newsletter to educate them on how to use Midjourney. Let’s reduce the friction of getting good results. THEY NEED THIS.”
From my seat, I Googled “Midjourney newsletter.”
There wasn’t one. Zero. Zip. Nada.
It was my ‘holy cow’ moment. I exclaimed, “That’s it!” Anyone around me must have thought I was odd.
That night, I wrote my business plan for the newsletter in my hotel room. From then on, I was on a mission.
Marshall quickly launched his Midjourney Experience newsletter
Luckily…
I already had a mailing list for drip marketing and social media – about 15K on all channels – so I announced it to them. I decided to publish weekly. Subscriptions are $12 per month or $100 per year.
Forty-three people signed up the first week, immediately making the project revenue positive (a little over $4K).
Goes to show the value of having an existing audience when launching a new product or service.
Although if you don’t have an audience yourself, you could always partner with someone who does
How Marshall has been growing his newsletter business…
Since the beginning, we have created videos to explain Midjourney creation techniques. We publish them on a YouTube channel that helps drive subscribers. Our latest work is editing these videos to use as Instagram, YouTube Shorts, or TikTok.
A year in, Marshall writes…
Last month, I published my 52nd edition of the newsletter. That’s right. One year.
We have 352 subscribers and are growing. Though some may say that’s not a lot, it brings in well over $30K a year and only takes me about two hours a week to assemble (thanks to my VA team).
… Now, if you Google “Midjourney Newsletter,” my creation ranks right at the top – without me paying for sponsored links.
I like how it all started with Marshall googling “Midjourney newsletter” and finding nothing.
You could google around for newsletters based on your own interests/skills/hobbies
If you can’t find a good one, that might be a gap you can fill and turn into a profitable business.

The Projects That Really Take Off
From the book Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon…
One thing I’ve learned in my brief career: It’s the side projects that really take off. By side projects I mean the stuff that you thought was just messing around. Stuff that’s just play. That’s actually the good stuff. That’s when the magic happens.
What stuff feels like play to you?
What if you carved out a little time to work on that stuff, get it published, see what happens.
She’s Earned $76,000 With Date Night Printables

Ruta Drungilaite is the founder of A Twist Of Date, a digital products store that offers date-night printable games
Per a recent interview, Ruta has earned $76,000 doing this as a side-hustle.
She says…
The idea for A Twist Of Date came to me during one of the Covid lockdowns in 2021. We live in London, so we are usually spoiled when it comes to fun things to do. My fiancé and I have done it all…
However, the lockdown took away all those choices…. It dawned on me that there must be other people out there who also struggle to come up with creative date ideas at home (not just a movie and dinner).
So, I started to think about how I could solve that problem for couples.
She didn’t start off digitally but rather…
My first idea was to create date night boxes delivered to you, which would have everything set and planned for a romantic evening at home….
Couples loved these boxes, and I received a lot of good feedback, but making the boxes by hand was extremely labor intensive, profit margins were razor thin/nonexistent, and the volume of sales was not as high as I had originally hoped for.
Ultimately, the date box idea was not a scalable or financially viable one for me to continue.
Ruta then experimented with “date idea cards”…
As this idea went well, I pivoted my business away from physical date night boxes toward digital products, expanding my range with romantic board games, cold case files, escape rooms, conversation starters and more.
6 months into the business…
My total revenue was less than £3,000 (about $3,800).
Seven months in, I had my “Flirty Dice” printable board game go viral on TikTok, which brought in over £700 (about $890) in just three days, which is when I knew I was on to something and started to see more growth from leveraging organic social media to drive sales.
Now, it looks like she’s getting most of her traffic from TikTok (262k followers) and Instagram (52k).
And Ruta recently announced that she’s quit her corporate job to focus on the business
Wise words from this first-time founder…
Prioritize action over perfection. Learn to be comfortable with releasing your ideas into the market and testing them before they’re perfect. The more messy and scrappy action you take, the quicker you’ll get the feedback you need and be able to learn from it.
This is another great example of creating a business by scratching your own itch.
Keep an eye out for problems or frustrations that arise in your own life
If it’s a struggle for you, it’s likely a struggle for many other people.
Come up with a good solution, and you could have the seed of a winning business.

They Earn $45K Per Month Selling Code Templates

Check out ThemeSelection, self-described as…
Fully Coded Dashboard Templates & UI Kits
To Kick-Start Your Next Project.
They basically offer templates to help you build apps and websites faster.
Co-founder Ajay Patel revealed in a recent interview…
We are earning around $25-$30k per month, with at least half of that coming from our three most popular products. That’s in addition to the $15-$20k that… we bring in from marketplaces each month.
So $40-50k in total monthly revenue
Ajay explains how the business started back in 2011…
it was just the two of us — me and Vrushank Brahmakshatriya.
We were both working at a software company and realized that, while most products required a backend admin panel, there weren’t many solutions available.
It was really time consuming and repetitive for us to create UI for each project, so we got an idea: What if we create an admin panel & UI kits ourselves?
So they did just that
We started by launching one product on Envato’s ThemeForest. That’s where we validated the idea, and we still sell $15-$20k/mo on marketplaces.
Looks like they bought the ThemeSelection domain in 2017.
That was key…
Launching our own platform, ThemeSelection, turned out to be a pivotal decision. It gave us complete control over user experience, pricing, and marketing strategies. That’s how we made it to where we are today.
Then in 2022…
We noticed that customers were working with multiple techs and were therefore interested in purchasing multiple products, so we came up with the idea of the Big Bundle.
Basically, our customers can get all of our premium products for roughly the price of two products. It’s good for the customer, and it brings in 40-45% of our total earnings.
Marketing…
We focus on SEO to maximize organic traffic for our products… our team determines the keywords to target by identifying search terms that are relevant to both our audience and our product solutions.
Another SEO play is that we create free tools for designers and developers, like Free UI kits and a Bootstrap 5 CheatSheet. These are win-wins that generate a lot of relevant, high-quality traffic.
Other than SEO, we put a lot of time into developer- and designer-oriented communities and platforms like DevTo, Medium, and Hackernoon. Creating content and engaging in these communities has significantly boosted our brand recognition.
Thanks to those efforts…
Our traffic is currently about 280k/month, and 40% of that is from organic search. Another 42% is direct.
This story is another good example of someone coming up with a winning business idea via their 9-to-5 job
Ajay and his co-founder noticed an inefficiency while working at a software company, and built products to address that.
They stuck with that idea for several years and grew it into a business that earns $500K+ per year.
What inefficiencies have you noticed in your work, past or present?
Could you build a business out of that?

$20K/Month From a Subscription-Based Design Service

Amin Memon is the founder of Draftss, a productised design and development service.
Per a recent interview, they’re apparently earning $20K/month in revenue
Amin says…
I had been running my own design agency for some time, but I felt that the traditional model was outdated and there was an opportunity to innovate.
His thinking behind doing subscription-based design service…
The average cost to hire a designer in the US is around $60,000 a year. That’s when I decided to create Draftss and revolutionize the agency model.
We developed a subscription-based model that allowed customers to request unlimited graphic design tasks [one-task at a time] and get top-quality designs from our highly rated-team.
Looks like they launched around April 2018, see the first version of their website here
To get traction…
Our strategy for achieving our first 50 customers was to leverage the power of community marketing. We connected with niche communities such as Indie Hackers, Facebook Groups, and Reddit, and used our side projects to launch product launches.
And…
Within the first week of our launch we had crossed $3.2k MRR. Since then there is no looking back as we are increasing the number of customers over time.
They key to Amin’s success…
For building a great start-up, you must focus on the end result of the product which solves the customers problem and provide immense value…
For example there are tons of other companies that try to copy our model & build their own design subscription model as a service. But they eventually failed because they weren’t able to obtain great designs & provide them at a fraction of the cost, with a fast turnaround time.
Sounds to me like Amin’s great at finding, hiring and managing talent.
And that talent provides excellent service for customers
If you’ve got a similar skillset to Amin, or you’d like to develop those skills, then an agency business could be a good fit for you.
Just note that the margins on such a business aren’t usually very high. Amin doesn’t mention how much of their $20k monthly revenue is profit, but I suspect it’s likely less than 30%
Hiring talent ain’t cheap.

Her Failed Startup Led to a $40K/Month Business

Cecilia Razak is the founder of Slides With Friends, which she describes as…
… an interactive presentation builder. We enable teams to come together in groups to learn, connect, and communicate.
Think slide-style quiz and trivia games but you can join in like it’s a Zoom call
Cecilia reveals in a recent interview, that the business does $40K in monthly revenue with a team of 4.
Slides WIth Friends was actually born from the ashes of Cecilia’s first startup, “a tech platform that connected pet care providers with pet owners.”
She explains…
I remember, we had a week-long on-site meeting in March of 2020… we wondered if we should discuss this “COVID 19 thing”…
By Friday, the trains were shut down and we struggled to even get our team members home.
That was the beginning of the end for that business…
Within a matter of months, our revenue decreased by almost 70%…
It wasn’t just a lack of demand that killed our startup. With such a large and (suddenly) remote team, it was urgent that everyone was aligned with our mission… As we grew, communication started to break down and the service itself suffered.
That realization led to the idea for Slides With Friends…
Slides With Friends was born out of need, as well as circumstance, as that startup went silent…
And the upside of our startup troubles was that we suddenly had time to work on something else. So we built Slides With Friends for ourselves and it turned out to be valuable.
To test the waters…
We initially used PPC [paid ads, eg. Google ads] to help validate the idea. It started making money and we were like, “Oh, this has legs and value: We can run with this.” So we started focusing on it full time.
Their pricing model helps with marketing…
We’re running a freemium model. It was the right choice for us because the product is inherently self-marketing — customers are launching events with our brand on them for their audiences.
But…
Our main conversion driver is content marketing — SEO has paid off a great deal. Word of mouth is important for us too, which is another reason that freemium makes sense for us. I’d say it’s about 70/30, respectively.
I love stories like this, where entrepreneurs turn defeat into triumph
A good reminder that your tough times may well contain the seeds of success.

He Earned $100,000 While Learning To Code

Jonathon Ringeisen is the founder of Essential Studio Manager (ESM), a customer relationship manager (CRM) for photographers
Per a recent profile, Jonathon built it while learning to code and eventually sold the business for $70,000.
The backstory…
Like millions of others, Jonathon wanted to learn how to code. But unlike most people who choose to learn in a low-pressure experimental environment, Jonathon wanted to create something of value while gaining experience, so he started a business and learned on the fly.
How he came up with the idea for ESM in 2017…
Jonathon’s wife, Elena, had recently started an online business selling Lightroom presets to photographers (Lightroom is a popular photo editing program, and presets apply specific looks or effects to photos).
He decided to create a customer relationship manager (CRM) for photographers to capitalize on the audience Elena was already building.
Initial traction…
Once the minimum viable product (MVP) was ready, Jonathon started to promote ESM. Since Elena had a growing customer list of photographers, Jonathon started by emailing them.
He also ran Facebook ads and included a referral program that incentivized ESM users to share it with friends and colleagues.
He started getting users and feedback while he continued adding features…
ESM users also provided feedback on the product’s pricing. Many of them told Jonathon the price was too low, so he increased it to $15 per month and then eventually $29 per month (which was still cheaper than his competitors)…
During this time, Jonathon was also learning how to run a business.
Come 2022, five years after Jonathon got started, he decides to sell the business…
ESM had plateaued at about $1,600 MRR, and the competition was intense. It was an excellent learning experience, but Jonathon knew ESM was no longer the best use of his time.
He then listed it for sale and…
When all was said and done, we received a total of $70,000.
So he probably earned around $100,000 from ESM over the years
Obviously the project didn’t make Jonathon rich, but given that he learned a ton about programming and building a business along the way, I’d consider it a big win overall.
Think about the skills you want to learn.
Instead of learning in some low-stakes practice environment, how about creating something for real-world use or consumption?
It’s scary, sure, but you’ll likely learn much faster that way

How To Build An Army of Content Partners
A recent article by Perrin Carrell…
Within that, he suggests building a database of “Super Sharers” to help promote your content.
According to Perrin, Super Sharers are
People who already frequently share content in the places you want to promote content.
Examples are like:
– People who share stuff in private Facebook groups
– People who post a lot in subreddits (long-form posts are ideal)
– People who lead discussions in Slack or Discord groups
– Long-time niche forum members
These people don’t even have to be all that well-known.
The important part is that they already enjoy producing content for or sharing content with an active community.
He adds…
The reason these folks are such great content partners is because they get their dopamine hits from sharing stuff.
It usually doesn’t take much convincing.
How to find these people…
It usually has to be manual. You’re going to look at the posts/comments in a community for the past 30-ish days and try to identify people who are most active. Then, DM and strike up a friendly convo…
These folks are usually driven by appreciation, so complimenting their content and insights is a good foot in the door. Then, just try to be friends. Try to be friends before you approach them asking for a share.
Obviously, you’d also need to create share-worthy content, the type of content that any Super Sharer would be happy to post about
All of this would take time, of course, but clearly it would work well if you put in the time and effort.
Perrin goes on to explain how to….
Build a database of business content partners.Build a database of customer advocates.Build a database of community owners. Some great ideas in there.
And I wonder if this kind of thing could be offered as a service to startups
As in, they would pay you to go out and build these relationships and databases on their behalf, thereby making it easier to promote their content.
$100,000+ Per Year From Her Free Printables Blog

Kelly Crean is the founder of Pjs and Paint, a printables blog…
Free printables perfect for celebrating holidays, entertaining kids at home or in the classroom and so much more!
In a recent interview, she reveals…
In quarters 1, 2, and 3 I make around $5,000-$9,000 a month from ads. Q4, however, is a money-making season and I’m thrilled to say that last Q4 I made an average of $16,000 each month.
That adds up to $100,000+ per year
Kelly graduated with a degree in Fine Art but realized she “did not want to become a teacher or gallery artist.”
So she taught herself graphic design and started freelancing in 2013…
[The freelance business] was very successful and I was making 6 figures and working with pretty high-profile clients.
But…
In 2018, my first son was born. I quickly realized that working from home while having a newborn was very, very difficult.
Kelly tested out a few different business ideas around this time, but her printables blog proved to be the big winner…
Pjs and Paint is by far my most profitable and enjoyable business endeavor. However, it took me quite a long time to settle on the idea.
In addition to my blogs, I had multiple Etsy shops, where I sold everything from handmade jewelry to custom social media icons, and also web design clients.
Amazing that she managed to build up her blog while juggling several other business pursuits and being a new mom
And worth emphasizing that Kelly tried several different ideas before hitting upon one that really worked.
She adds…
Just under a year after I started Pjs and Paint, I was accepted into Mediavine. It was such an amazing accomplishment and motivated me to put even more time and effort into making my blog a business.
I continued my freelance design business for about 2 years and kept working on Pjs and Paint part time.
Finally, in 2021, after my second son was born, I felt confident enough with my Mediavine income that I quit freelancing and poured all my attention into my blog.
Kelly’s newsletter is her #1 marketing strategy…
On days that I send out email newsletter, my traffic and income easily triple. I currently have about 106,000 active email subscribers…
I think something unique that I do that helps grow my business is to include a free printable in every post. It gives people an incentive to read my posts and also sign up for my email list in order to get the free download.
And while Kelly’s printables business might sound simple, there’s actually a lot to it…
Something I wish I had known when I first started out was that building a blog is a lot more work than you might think. The internet, social media, rules, and regulations are always changing and it’s something you have to learn to be flexible with and be able to pivot as things change.
That’s the nature of online business: things change fast and you have to keep learning and adjusting
But Kelly’s story shows that you can earn a good living online if you’re willing to work hard and test out your ideas.

$2300/Month From a Tool He Used to Give Away For Free

A recent post by Tamir Bashkin…
He writes…
Back in 2021, I used to set up automation solutions for clients in the customer support space.
The problem…
Let’s say you are the proud owner of an E-commerce shoe store, and you have a client named Chad.
Chad reached out to your support team because he got the wrong size of sneakers.
A member of your support team helps Chad return the shoes and get them in a different size.
A few hours passed, and the guy from your team successfully marked Chad’s ticket in the CRM system as “closed.”
Chad writes back: “Thank you so much, guys. I really appreciate the help, and I just love your sneakers.
Chad doesn’t know that he just created extra work for the brand. He just popped his message back up to their queue, and his gratitude might end up frustrating the team.
From this very problem, Thank You GPT… was born.
It began as an extremely simple tool…
I started to list every form of gratitude I saw people tend to send in those messages.
When my tool detected a form of “thank you” in the closed chat, it immediately replied back and marked the specific ticket as “solved” again.
There was no AI back then, so the core of Tamir’s tool was just a big list of words and phrases
He adds…
For two years, this tool sat in the marketplace of a CRM platform (Zendesk)…
It didn’t generate any revenue for the simple reason that I didn’t ask for any.
Then came ChatGPT…
It was a blessing because Instead of my aging list of forms of gratitude, I could give my tool a functioning brain.
This was a game-changer in terms of its abilities.
After upgrading the tool, Tamir’s girlfriend suggested…
“Why don’t you send an email to current free users telling them that the tool will be available on a monthly subscription model starting next month?”
I had nothing to lose, and 24 hours later, I secured 1,000$ in monthly subscriptions from a tool I used to give for free.
Since then…
We’ve built a freemium model, and now I help people who are just starting out with their small business to enjoy it for free.
And now the tool is earning $2300/month
I think the key thing here is that Tamir was doing freelance work and had clients who experienced this problem.
That’s how he came up with the idea.
And it seems such ideas are often born from client work
So keep an eye out for simple, recurring problems in your daily work, whether as a freelancer or in your day job.
Might also be worth browsing the Zendesk Marketplace, see if you can find some low-rated apps that you could improve upon, or free apps that you could emulate and add premium features to
