Her Candle Business Earns $1 Million Per Year

Annabelle DeGrazio is the founder of TAJA Collection
She started it back in 2017 with the goal of selling “customizable home accessories” which includes candles, soap, diffusers, vases and more.
In a recent interview, Annabelle reveals the business now does $1 in annual revenue
The origin story…
While working as a lawyer… I created TAJA Collection while searching for the perfect gift for my secretary. I wanted something thoughtful and beautiful—in particular, a high-end candle with a photo of my secretary’s cat. With no viable options (besides a sticker on a generic candle) and a few months of R&D, I launched TAJA Collection…
Once I got the idea in my head, it was impossible to get rid of it. My obsession turned into a product and, eventually, a business!
Their customers…
We sell mostly DTC (60%) and wholesale, primarily corporate gifting (40%).
(DTC = Direct to Consumer)
Initial traction…
Word of mouth and Instagram! Since most of our clients are buying gifts, the recipients loved their gifts so much that nine times out of ten, they pay it forward and order TAJA when they need a gift, and so on.
This is what Seth Godin refers to as a “purple cow” product: something so remarkable that people can’t help but spread the word
Btw, you can check out TAJA on Instagram here (50K followers).
How Annabelle kickstarted the wholesale side of the business…
I messaged many people on LinkedIn offering free candles. This led to locking up some sports teams and law firms.
But nothing came easy…
The first year was a whirlwind, and I worked out of a garage for most of the year.
Whenever I was awake, I was working.
Now Annabelle runs a fully-bootstrapped million dollar business with a team of 5 women in Miami
Last words from her…
No one does what we do. There are no candles on the market that offer full customization quite like we do—from fragrance to color and top-to-bottom design. You can put lyrics, photos, mantras, and basically any design on the candle. We also infuse so much thought into each and every order.
Makes me think there could be room for a competitor, or perhaps there’s an opportunity to do something like this in other parts of the world

$1K/Month Building ChatGPT for Secondhand Shopping

A recent post on Reddit…
We made chatgpt for shopping for secondhand/resale – hit 1k MRR!
![]()
The app is called Encore Shopping, and it lets you…
Search for mid to high-end clothing on hundreds of secondhand sites.
It has an interface similar to that of ChatGPT, but customized for budget fashion recommendations
Looks like they only launched ~1 month ago and they’re already earning $1000/month.
The founder writes…
My friend and I were frustrated by the high prices of mid-to-high-end fashion brands online and getting outfit inspo
so for our climate tech class we created an AI fashion assistant called Encore for our class that links the best second-hand/cheaper alternatives for any item and and provides style/inspo/outfit recommendations
The free version of the app gives you 1000 recommendations, whereas the unlimited version costs $9/month.
They justify their pricing nicely…
For people who shop 3+ times a year, save $270/yr on average.
However
Something to keep in mind is that businesses built on the back of GPT can be at risk of ChatGPT eventually making them extinct.
Giglish is one that comes to mind, featured in the newsletter a while ago…
His AI Language Learning App: $9K/Month in 16 MonthsNot sure how that business is faring nowadays, but looks like the recently released ChatGPT-4o can do essentially the same thing
So if you’re going to build an AI app, try to assess the likelihood of your app’s functionality soon becoming a part of ChatGPT itself.

Running a $110K/Month Digital Agency in South Africa

Felix Norton is the co-founder of Woww, a digital marketing agency based in South Africa
In a recent interview, Felix reveals his business to be earning…
Between $100-120k monthly recurring revenue (MRR). We aim for a 20% profit margin.
That profit margin makes sense when you consider he has a co-founder and 32 employees.
Felix’s background…
I ran a neighbourhood IT support service, dabbled in crypto mining, started and flipped an e-commerce brand, and even tried to start an online course business on how to build profitable online stores.
But the consistent business during all these side-hustles has been running a digital marketing agency.
He started out with web design while at university…
I made my first website for my dad and then one of his friends and ultimately started gaining enough work that it made sense to hire another freelancer part-time.
Shortly after, I hired multiple freelancers and was suddenly running an agency.
Now 12 years later I run Woww, a fully remote digital marketing agency based in Cape Town with 32 full-time employees servicing clients globally.
Getting those first clients…
In the early days I did everything I could. Friends and family, doing free projects, networking events, cold email outreach, Facebook Groups, and responding to classified ads.
Anyone I could somehow get in touch with, I would try to work with.
Interesting how Felix has tried a bunch of other business models, but a simple design agency has ultimately proved best for him.
His agency now earns more than $1 million per year and it all started with him making a website for his dad.
So don’t underestimate starting with a simple freelance business, serving clients in your local area.

2-Year-Old Business Just Earned $2 Million in 30 Days

Craig Rukus wrote in a recent newsletter…
Shaan Puri had a great piece on marketing halfway through this podcast (33 min mark) where he takes you through the levels of marketing. His question – what are you actually selling?…
Shaan sees it as five levels:
– Level 1 Sell a Product – Don’t do this
– Level 2 Sell a Solution – Head and Shoulders
– Level 3 Sell a Lifestyle – Lululemon, Slack, this is how you create a category
– Level 4 Sell a Feeling – “I sell holy shit moments” – Dana White UFC President, Disney = magical family experience, Louis Vuitton = status, Nike = greatness
– Level 5 Sell an Identity – Religions, political parties, tribe, label, purpose, sense of belonging
This framework reminded Craig of Dad Gang, “a simple product line of hats”
Dad Gang was started by three guys in May 2022.
With only $750 of startup capital…
They made 100 hats, sold out in 36 hours.
Then they made 300 hats, sold them in a week. Repeat!
By August 2023 they had sold $1.5 million [worth of] hats.
The hats don’t look like anything special; it’s more about the identity they have come to represent.
The origins of Dad Gang, from the official website
We are all dads and we’ve been in a text thread forever now talking about the dad life. The great things, the not so great things, and everything in-between…
we would always share those stories followed by #DadGang at the end of our texts. If any of us had an especially tough day we’d just say “hey that’s DadGang”.
During all this time the term just seemed like something that could be understood by plenty of other dads. So we figured “hey let’s make 100 hats and see what happens”
Back to Craig’s commentary…
One of the co-founders Bart Szaniewski was on a podcast a few days back and mentioned they’ve sold 110,000 hats…
So that means in the last nine months they’ve sold approximately $2.4 million in hats and $3.8 million so far. This is from a brand that’s just two years old.
And how?
A level 5 approach.
Looks like that crazy growth is continuing as one of the founders recently tweeted…
$2m in 30 days is crazy. Onward.
Given that incredible success, it’s worth asking
Also, probably not the best idea to start this kind of business on your own.
Better done with some buddies

The Community Funnel: A High-Level Overview of How to Monetize
Neville Medhora recently tweeted an image of a Community Funnel, a term coined by Richard Patey…
A high-level overview of how to monetize:
Posting on Social –> Newsletter –> Community –> Larger Projects
We’ve featured Richard Patey previously when…
He Built a $10K/Month Newsletter in 10 MonthsRichard is quick to adapt to changes in the industry. He has built and sold content sites and newsletters, and now he’s focused on communities
As well as building his own community, Richard offers a service where he helps subject experts build a community.
Here’s how he describes the Community Funnel approach…
We launch and run a newsletter on beehiiv, leveraging ‘Boosts’ to get a % of your ad spend back.
(Boosts are paid recommendations from Beehiiv that are shown to all of Richard’s new subscribers. If people sign up to his recommendations, Richard gets paid )
We then build you out a paid Skool community with the aim of making ad spend profitable – consider this the modern day tripwire.
Finally we use the community to generate leads who book discovery calls for high ticket services.
At the end of this you have a newsletter with engaged subscribers, an active community that sees you as the expert in the field, and you an automated system that drives clients.
Seems like a smart way to monetize your expertise, nothing too complicated there.
Could you give this a try yourself?
$22,000/Month Hosting Online Video Game Parties

Check out this unique online business: Miss Devyn’s Video Game Universe
It’s run by Devyn Ricks and described as…
A safe, online space for kids to play and chat about video games with other kids.
According to a recent interview, it’s a 6-figure business
Origins…
Devyn spent the better part of a decade teaching English online to students in China through VIPKid-like platforms.
When that opportunity dried up due to regulations, Devyn switched to Outschool, a platform that offers a variety of online classes for kids across a wide range of subjects.
Devyn started out teaching English and creative writing on Outschool
Then…
As a gamer… she found herself incorporating video game elements into her lessons, using games like Zelda and Pokemon to teach descriptive writing and punctuation.
When kids responded well to this…
[Devyn] started offering social clubs where kids could game together in a safe, supervised environment.
Surprisingly, parents love this. They love that their kids will be accepted, have fun, and also build relationships with other kids.
Given she already had a student base who knew her, she offered them trial classes before starting paid classes…
She set her prices low initially to build a reputation on the platform.
Devyn liked running everything through Outschool because…
She doesn’t see the need to focus on building her own independent business from scratch.
No need to haggle for clients or send out automated emails on her own.
Instead, she focused on maximizing her recurring revenue within the Outschool ecosystem.
Now Devyn regularly caters to 300 “recurring students” every week, charging $18 per student per class.
That adds up to $5400 per week, or about $22,000 per month
However, Outschool does take a 30% cut of that revenue.
Looks like Devyn has been building up her social media lately – TikTok, YouTube – which is probably a good move, not to be too dependent on Outschool.
Also…
Devyn is slowly moving away from live teaching and is now working on managing her team of instructors while maintaining her brand.
If you’re a teacher or would like to teach, give Outschool a look
No formal teaching credentials required to teach on there, though you do have to be a resident of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea or the UK.

His “Not Good Enough” Project Earned $20K in 3 Months

Sergey Karakhanyan from Armenia is the guy behind Larafast, a boilerplate code template that helps founders launch their apps faster.
He recently posted about the success of the project on Reddit…
From $0 to $20K in Just 3 Months Sergey writes…
I was initially afraid to launch this kind of product, you know, imposter syndrome, blah blah, what if my code is not good enough, what if people don’t like it?
Then I convinced myself – “Man, you have 10 years of experience in the field, come on…”
He eventually poured his experience into creating Larafast and…
I started to talk about it on X and Reddit, sharing about the progress, about the marketing tricks I did. At first, I didn’t expect to have many sales.
The first sale came 10 days from the launch. It was during the night, out of nowhere.
That gave him the confidence to “push harder”
In terms of marketing, aside from building in public…
One of the best sales channels for me was to find niche blogs and newsletters and sponsor them. Find a niche blog, contact them and ask for cooperation – you’ll not regret it.
With that, Sergey’s project took off…
The first sale I had for Larafast was on February 28. Doing all the things from above, on May 28 Larafast hit $20K in sales.
People love it. It helped a lot of people create their MVP’s [Minimum Viable Product] in less than a week.
A great example of someone not letting self-doubt win!
I also like how Sergey created a product “to help people launch projects faster.”
What could you create to help people launch something faster?
Could be a book, a course, a done-for-you service… anything really that can help speed up people’s journey from A to B.

Copying & Pasting Other People’s Playbooks
From the book The Third Door by Alex Banayan…
Ever since I’d been on my dorm room bed, I’d been obsessed with studying the paths of successful people, and while that’s a good approach to learning, I couldn’t solve every problem that way.
I couldn’t copy and paste other people’s playbooks and expect it to work exactly the same for me. Their playbook worked for them because it was their playbook. It played to their strengths and their circumstances.
Not once had I ever looked within myself and wondered about my strengths or my circumstances. What did it mean to out-Alex someone?
While there’s a time for studying what’s worked for other people, there are moments when you have to go all in on what makes you unique. And in order to do that, you have to know what makes you, you.
Love that
I’ve tried many times over the years to copy and paste other people’s playbooks, and the results have never been as good as I hoped.
Sure, you can (and should) take ideas and inspiration from others, but the best businesses always seem to have their own unique twist.
What’s yours?
Pat Flynn Says You Should Stop Selling Courses
Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income has been a highly successful online entrepreneur for a long-time, and has sold many courses sharing his knowledge on different topics
A recent video he put out…
Stop selling info and do this instead…His point
Selling information doesn’t work anymore if you’re somebody who is trying to build an audience and take this expertise of yours to teach your audience how to do something.
If you actually come from a place of service and you’re thinking that you can package this information, sell it, and make a living generating revenue, unfortunately, that’s not going to happen.
His reasoning…
People aren’t buying online courses like they used to.
In 2020, we were at the height because everybody was at home because of the pandemic, but then, over time, in the next couple of years, people got overloaded and just tired.
You probably aren’t buying online courses.
We’ve seen it on our end as well.
People just were not buying online courses as much as they used to.
It used to be so easy. We’ve passed that golden era of just selling information now.
Pat’s solution…
Stop selling information and start selling implementation…
If your tire is flat on the road, you don’t want the information about how to change that tire; you want somebody to come and do that for you and get you on your way as soon as possible. And that’s what we should be offering.
That’s what we should be selling: either access to us, to people, or to each other in order to achieve a goal, not just the information.
Emphasizing that last part, Pat talks about 3 ways you can sell implementation…
Do it for them (Service Business)Do it with them (Coaching / Consultation)Do it with others (Community / Cohort Courses)While Pat may have a point, there are people in comments who say otherwise
This is so tiring. One video someone says this, other videos are saying SELL INFORMATION and other videos people are making a ton of money from their courses.
It’s all about this. Build your audience and be genuine. Take whatever path YOU WANT. You can be successful at any path you choose if you put in the work. People will always buy from people they like.
So yeah, it’s not black and white.
(It rarely is in the real world!)
But worth considering Pat’s point of view before you go launching your next information product
$100K/Year Sneaky AI That Plugs Your Product Online

Alexander Belogubov is the founder of ReplyGuy…
The AI That Plugs Your Product on Reddit and Twitter.
It basically finds conversations related to your product or service, then “mentions your product in [those] conversations naturally.”
Bit of a sneaky way to do marketing, but also kinda genius
Alex started the project last October and recently tweeted…
ReplyGuy reaches an incredible $100k ARR
It took 8 months from launch to reach this milestone.
Apparently he actually quit his job last year and Initially wanted to sell ReplyGuy but…
I put the project up for sale and one of the buyers offered a partnership instead of selling
The co-founder took on the marketing side of things and it has since grown to a $100K/year business
When asked about marketing, Alex replied…
PH [Product Hunt], Twitter, Reddit.
Looks like he’s also built a decent following on Twitter/X by sharing project updates.
First idea here: if you’re struggling with marketing in your business, consider finding and partnering with a capable marketer
You focus on what you’re best at and let them spread the word.
Win-win.
Second idea comes courtesy of Nic Conley on X…
Agency idea: buy an agency subscription to Reply Guy + 10 Domains.
cold email startups. become their “reply guy”. plug their biz in Reddit & twitter comments.
charge $500/m + [commissions] on all sales generated.
let reply guy do all the work.
If you can’t afford that agency subscription, we’ve previously covered F5Bot, a free service that lets you monitor Reddit and Hacker News, but you’d have to reply manually.
