Maddie Wang writes that she started an online coworking community for founders in June, and it now has 120 members and earns $4000/month.

It’s a business that I reckon many people with above-average social skills can emulate.

You could focus on your local area (eg. online coworking Chicago), a certain demographic (eg. online coworking for women over 40), a shared focus (online coworking for freelance writers), or some combination.

Self-taught Coder, $1 Million Business

Andrew Burnett-Thompson details how he taught himself to code and started a software business in his spare time.

The business is SciChart. Andrew would get up early and work on it before his day job – while his wife and baby slept – and during his daily train commute.

He had his MVP built in ~5 months and it pulled in $173,000 the first year. In year five the business did $1,251,778 in revenue

Andrew learned to code the same way he built his business: with small consistent efforts.

If you improve by 1% a day, after 365-days you have gained +3,704% or 37x. Improvements compound over time leading to bigger and bigger gains over time

I heard about Andrew’s story in Stop Asking Questions – great book, been sharing insights from that on Twitter – and there’s a popular Mixergy interview to go along with it.

Instagram marketing just got easier

Instagram recently announced that they will allow anyone on their platform to include links in their Stories.

Darko writes that this makes influencer and affiliate marketing on Instagram a whole lot easier…

Do you know any Instagram influencers that your target audience follows? If so, chances are (especially if you’re in a smaller market) that many of those people have fewer than 10,000 followers.

With this update, you can contact those people, and ask them to publish an Instagram Story with your link in exchange for a free product/cash. You could also provide them with an affiliate link through which they can earn a commission.

Darko goes on to explain how to find and contact Instagram influencers for your target audience.

If you have a few thousand followers on Instagram yourself, you now have another way to monetize. There’s also an opportunity there to be the middleman connecting brands with lots of smaller influencers and taking care of all the details.

Tiny tool, 1 million visitors a month

Jonathan Berger writes about the side project he started 10 years ago: this simple time zone converter tool.

Traffic has grown organically over time and now Jonathan reports the tool getting 1 million visitors a month

It’s monetized with one Google AdSense banner at the bottom of the page.

Referencing a couple of AdSense calculators, those 1 million impressions each month could translate to $100,000 a year in revenue

Postcards From Timbuktu

Postcards From Timbuktu is a website where you can order a real, hand-crafted postcard sent from Timbuktu in Mali

The Washington Post did a great write-up on it a year ago. The average salary in Mali is only $80/month, and locals earn about $3 per postcard, crucial income during the pandemic especially.

I love finding simple, tech-enabled projects like this that help people in poorer countries earn a living.

Another example is HeyGo.com, which allows tour guides around the world to offer live-streamed tours that anyone can join for free. If you like the tour, you can give them a tip.

(Btw, by some accounts the wealthiest man of all time was from Mali)

Dan Liu on Twitter last week:

Two Chinese streamers sold 18 billion RMB (about $3B) worth of goods in a half-day livestream yesterday.

That’s almost as much as Twitter’s annual revenue ($3.72B).

Apparently 200 million people showed up during the live streams, and the streamers earned as much as 20% commission selling cosmetics, electronics, and more.

Neville Mehra writes how one of the streamers – 34-year-old Viya – has had more viewers on a stream than the Game of Thrones finale, and predicts that livestream selling will likely become a big thing in Europe and the USA before long.

Indeed, it seems to be trending that way, per this CNBC article from May…

In the U.S., the livestreaming market was worth about $6 billion last year and could reach $11 billion by the end of this year, according to consumer market research group Coresight Research. It expects the market could eclipse $25 billion by 2023.

That’s still far behind China, where livestreaming is estimated to have driven about $125 billion in sales in 2020, up from $63 billion in 2019, according to Coresight.

Launched in 2015, Føljeton offers several Danish-language email newsletters. They have 30,000+ subscribers each paying around $9.50 per month, which works out to $285,000 monthly revenue.

Even more impressive when you consider that there are only ~6 million Danish speakers in the world, a pretty small market

Morning Brew reports on a crypto wallet that bought about $8000 worth of $SHIB in August last year…

It’s now worth $5.7 billion.

We may actually be looking at the greatest individual trade of all time.

Sounds to me like someone who could afford to lose $8000 – or more, since they likely bought a bunch of other so-called sh*t coins as well – made an asymmetric bet

In mid-2013, while soul searching for my next venture, I decided I wanted to build a way for people to respond to emails faster. Gmail had just released an API, so the technology was finally available to work with Gmail messages outside of the native Gmail product. I named it Wordzen.

While working on Wordzen, I found that I needed a way to send some small group personalized emails, and I didn’t like the existing solutions. GMass was built as an internal tool to help run Wordzen. As it turned out though, Wordzen never gained much traction, but GMass did.

Beluga has pretty much discovered the new blueprint for how to grow a YouTube channel. He used the 3-step system to beat the algorithm.

Quick summary of those 3 steps:

Beluga initially promoted his new channel with another channel he’d previously built to 1 million subs (ie. not his first rodeo).He created “bingeable loops of content,” short videos that kept viewers watching and increased session time.“Beluga discovered the ultimate title and thumbnail strategy” … basically the opposite of what everyone else does.

14 months to $5,000 MRR

Rauno Metsa writes:

I picked a random set of 20 startups built by solo founders in the range of $5,000-$40,000 MRR and looked at how quickly they reached the initial $5,000/month revenue… We see that it took a median of 14 months to reach $5,000 MRR.

Rauno points out that many of those founders had tried and failed with previous startups before, so take the 14 months timeline with a large grain of salt
