That’s 27-year-old Kat Norton, recently interviewed by The Verge.

Kat’s online success story is one of the most remarkable I’ve seen

In brief:

She started in June 2020Pretty much just Kat and a virtual assistantHer main marketing channels are TikTok (657k followers) and Instagram (528k)“I was actually incredibly shy and had a lot of anxiety before starting this project.”Started creating content from her childhood bedroom.She monetizes with paid Excel courses (main course sales page)Hit 6 figures within 6 months, while still working a day job.Recently had her first 6-figure day.“if I’m not launching courses, I work maybe 15 hours a week.”

IMO, one of the keys to Kat’s success is combining an old and boring topic with a modern marketing approach. Excel has been around since 1987, several years before Kat was even born.

She took that boring topic and created fun and engaging content for it…

I ended up putting out a few videos, one per day. The fourth video hit 100,000 views… Within three weeks I went viral on a whole other scale. I looked at my phone to see that one of my videos hit 3.6 million views. I had 100,000 followers on TikTok.

$407,443 naming Chinese babies

CNBC Make It has the story of Beau Jessup, who started a website that helps Chinese parents come up with English names for their kids.

Beau started the business in 2015 and the CNBC article is from 2019. but it looks like it’s free to use now.

In a 2017 TEDx Talk, Beau reported that she was charging £0.60 for the service and naming about 850 babies daily – an autopilot, via an algorithm – which would have earned her $600+ per day

Beau came up with the idea for the site when a Chinese business associate of her father asked for help in naming her daughter. Most people would help out with a request like that, then move on with their lives. But Beau realized the value of the service she had provided and figured there were many more Chinese parents who would pay for it.

Next time you help someone out, ask yourself if other people might value the same service. You never know what might come of it.

GPT-3 now generally available

Recently reported on Venture Beat:

OpenAI today removed the waitlist for GPT-3, its large language model that can automatically write emails and articles, compose poetry, create code across a dozen programming languages, and more. Starting today, any developer in a supported country can sign up to begin integrating the model with their app or service.

Many a successful business has already been built off the back of GPT-3. Here are 21 tools, examples and use cases

One example there is Headlime, which was sold for $1 million only 8 months after launching.

Self-taught coder, $150k MRR

Back in 2012, Nick Fogle was a lawyer “saddled with $250k in student loans and living paycheck to paycheck.”

He taught himself to code, got a job with a software company, and went on to co-found Wavve.co, which turns audio clips into short, catchy videos optimized for social media.

Nick reports that they grew the business to $150,000 MRR before selling it earlier this year

Pretty cool that he went from no coding knowledge in 2012 to building and exiting a successful tech startup in less than a decade.

Matt Diggity polled his community of affiliate website builders and found that most of them took at least 6 months to reach $1000 a month in revenue.

However, about 15% of respondents got there in less than 6 months and in this video Matt shares how you can replicate their success.

2015 – sold nothing for $5 and made $71k
2016 – asked people to pay them to dig a big hole

2019 – pitted their writers against Artificial Intelligence, sold $160k of cards
2020 – donated $250k budget to nonprofits

For Black Friday 2021, they launched a website at getfivedollars.com and explained…

Every 20 minutes, we’ll reveal something special we want for Black Friday. Give us what we want and we’ll give you $5, $100, or even $10,000!

They paid people $100 to get vaccinated, $10k for correctly guessing how many jelly beans they put in a Cadillac, $5 to give a hot dog to a mail carrier, and on and on.

As usual, their anti-Black Friday shenanigans generated a ton of publicity

To take a CAH approach in your own business, consider what’s normal in your niche or industry, then think of ways you could buck that trend to stand out.

$4000/month longer lasting sex app

It’s an app called Stamena, launched by Nat Eliason back in 2016.

Nat wrote in mid-2019:

Since launching it in Spring 2016 it has mostly sat in the app store with no more than a couple hours of work per year on my part, and it has earned $154k in that time.

That works out to $4000/month over 3 years

More recently Nat writes that the app still often makes more than $2000/month. Also interesting to note that he outsourced the creation of the app, and apparently SEO is the main marketing channel for it.

Seasonal app on track for $1M ARR

The app is called Slopes, “a GPS tracking app for skiers and snowboarders”

Curtis Herbert built and launched the first version to little fanfare back in 2013. Per a recent AMA, he notes that first 3 years were a struggle, and he paid the bills by doing iOS consulting.

In 2016 he was able to quit consulting and go all-in on the app. Now he’s on track to crack $1 million in annual revenue for the first time

I like Curtis’s story because it illustrates how much time and patience it takes to build a successful business. And it speaks to the advantage of having a freelance skill that can reliably pay the bills while your passion project finds its legs.

As per my mountain framework, freelance is a Level 2 online business, while an app like Slopes is a Level 5 business. Best to figure out a lower level business before setting your sights on higher peaks

Business Acquisition Opportunities

Sometimes it’s better to buy and scale an existing business rather than build one from scratch.

For example, Ramon van Meer bought an ecommerce dog ramp business for $300,000 and in 2.5 years scaled it to $35 million in revenue

He wrote:

Facebook released a report for Q3 of this year.

Scroll to the bottom and you’ll see a list of the 20 most viewed posts on Facebook in that 3-month period.

As with the top 20 posts from Q2, pretty much all of them are highly visual and encourage you to leave a comment

This one Facebook page has 8 of the top 20 posts, so it might be worth studying their approach.

If you want to create a post that spreads organically on Facebook (or any other social media for that matter), one good idea is to ask a question that sparks people’s creativity and prompts them to provide an interesting answer.

100 articles in 100 days

I challenges like this one Anne-Laure Le Cunff embarked on, and which she largely credits for getting her business to $100k ARR…

Ness labs absolutely would not be what it is today without those articles. They laid the foundation for what Ness Labs is, and they generated hundreds of thousands of views, a dozen consulting contracts, and many coaching sessions to people randomly finding me through one of the articles. In terms of exposure, I have been invited to several podcasts and some articles were featured in the press.

She set aside 2 hours to write every day and would always hit publish regardless of the quality of her work.

Accept worst case outcome & assign it a probability, which is usually very low. Now think of good things in life & assign them probabilities – many are certain!

Bringing anxiety/fear to the conscious mind saps it of limbic emotional strength.

Pat Walls is the founder of Starter Story, which pulls in about $45,000 in monthly revenue.

Pat plays a lot of tennis

He likens improving as an entrepreneur to improving at tennis…

The pusher won’t fix his mediocre backhand. He’ll cover it up, hide it, and protect it with hacky tactics. The pusher avoids his weaknesses.

The balanced player will fix it, and embrace it. He’ll get lessons, watch videos, hit backhands for hours, and will be OK with losing 10+ matches while developing his new backhand.

The balanced player embraces his weaknesses. He loves losing. And in the end, he wins.
