Accuracy - or Compromise?

"You can't please everyone."

I've heard this phrase a lot since I started writing. Usually when there's divided opinion over something I've written. And I do get that. To try to produce something that everyone will love is unrealistic.

But yesterday, this phrase was on my mind. Why? Because of something I'd written in a WIP. It caused a debate among my beta readers, and it got me thinking about my goals. Do I strive for accuracy? Or do I compromise because such accuracy might cause confusion or offence?

I'm in the middle of writing Threepeat, the next book in the BDSM series Secrets, with Parker Williams. This will be the third novel, and as the title suggests, it's a ménage. So what caused the debate?

One word: douche.

When I originally wrote the chapter in question, I used the word 'enema', but changed it after one of my betas (who is A-British, and B- gay) suggested it was too clinical a term, and that British gay men used 'douche' more often. I had no problem with that. Anal douches are sold on Amazon in the UK, and that's how they are referred to.
Then the debate started.

Another beta pointed out that 'douche' in the US was used to refer to feminine hygiene, and they didn't want its use in the book to confuse readers, to in some way feminise the character, who has suffered at the hands of his family for not being 'man enough'.
What struck me most was the first point. Would US readers be confused? Offended?

I sought the opinion of an American gay friend, who assured me that American gay men used the term douching if they were being direct, and 'washing out' if they were being a little more delicate. He felt that enemas were more a colonic or therapeutic process in his mind.
Then he made a remark that stopped me. "But if the majority of your audience are women..."

Then what do I do? Use a word that gay men would use - or change/ remove it, because not doing so might offend the sensibilities of some readers? Accuracy - or Compromise?

Another beta didn't feel there would be any confusion, that readers had met the term before, and that the process didn't reflect on the character. Several betas felt that accuracy was the way to go - and there was that phrase: "Because you can never please everyone."

So often, I see a review where a reader complains that what they had just read didn't reflect reality. And yet on other occasions, when an author has provided that reality, they have been met with negativity.

See? We can't win. There really is no pleasing everyone.

Where do you stand on this?

To illustrate my point, the scene I was describing was a submissive's first experience of this procedure. Later, after he's had another first - anal sex - the following conversation takes place:

Tim chuckled. “If you must know, I was just remembering the noises I made in the bathroom earlier. I’m surprised you and Sam stayed.”
Aaron tugged him closer, and Tim slid into his warm embrace. “If you think a little farting is going to have us running for the hills, you’re wrong.” He chuckled against Tim’s ear, and it tickled. “And far be it from me to disillusion you, but you haven’t experienced sex until you’ve had to deal with lube farts.”

Now, my British gay beta's reaction to that?
"Love the lube farts .... very very true."
How the readers might react is another matter.

So I ask again - Where do you stand on this? Do you want reality - or not?

It's all about the kink.... or is it?

A while back, I came across some incredibly sexy photos of men wearing lingerie.
I posted them in my group, and was amazed by the reaction. So much so, that I wrote three brief extracts.
The response was unequivocal: "When are you writing this?" LOL

So....
This Friday, I'm releasing a short story, Lace. I'm still tweaking it, and I figure on it being 24-25K. And due to popular demand, I'll be putting it out as a paperback too. That is, if Amazon doesn't decide the cover is a no-go...
It will be available for $1.99 and on KU.

What's it about?

When Shawn’s best mate Dave breaks up with his girlfriend, Shawn tries not to get his hopes up. After all, Dave’s still straight, right? Wrong. Dave reveals he’s bisexual, and that pounding you hear is Shawn’s heart. He’s loved Dave for so long, but he’s not about to jeopardize their friendship by telling Dave how he really feels.
But when Dave discovers Shawn’s little kink, it opens up a whole new chapter for the two friends. Except Shawn can’t help but worry – if there was no kink, would Dave be there? And is Shawn brave enough to find out?
A standalone short story of lust, lace – and love…

Enjoy!

Sniff. Another ending...

Making it Personal was my first ever self published book, back in 2013, and it marks a changing point in my life.
Up until then, I'd spent twenty-three years teaching French and Spanish, but 2013 was the year I got out of teaching. The previous two years had been... stressful. And when everything came to a head in April that year, I knew something had to change.
My dad was the one who put it into words.
He asked if I could make a living writing.
Whoa.
That was a scary thought. Leave teaching?
But the more I thought about it, the more I became excited. Terrified. Excited. Nervous.
Did I mention excited?
When Making it Personal was released in July, it went to #1 in Gay Romance and Gay Fiction on Amazon. In fact, there was one point when it was trading #1 and #2 with An Unlocked Heart.
Yes, it's had its share of readers who didn't like it, but it remains one of my most popular books.
At the end of 2013 I released Personal Changes, the story of Rick, who worked at Trinity Publishing, and Angelo, the hero who saves him from a nasty piece of work.
But the following year, Ed got his story in Personal Secrets - and a whole load of admirers. Ed, my Cockney bear of a rugby player, who finally meets someone that completes him. He just hadn't figured on it being another guy...
Ed is one of my favourite characters. He's brash, doesn't mince his words, loud - and has a heart the size of the Atlantic. Only this weekend, I met a French reader who told me he absolutely loved Ed.
When Valentine's Day 2015 came around, I gave Ed and his lover Colin a weekend to remember - just not for the reasons Colin had envisages - in Strictly Personal.
And in More Than Personal Will and Blake, my original couple, saw the birth of their daughter, Sophie.
And now? It's the end of the road for this series. Next week sees the publication of the final novel, Personal Challenges and it deals with all three couples - but three very different storylines.
I've kept this one close to my chest. There has been a hell of a lot of research gone into this one, and although I regularly share extracts from my WIP with my Facebook group, none of its members - with the exception of my beta team - know about two of the plots.
Yes, I'm nervous.
Today I sent out the first ARCs, and you know I'm trying not to think about it. I'm just going to get on with my edits, my writing, and not jump when someone tells me they've reviewed it....

Sorry there's no Valentine's Day novella from me this year - too many books in the works! - so here's the opening chapter of my next WIP.

The End

Collars & Cuffs is finally at an end. The last book to be narrated, Dom of Ages, has just been released.
Sigh.
I finished the first book, An Unlocked Heart, back in late November of 2012. I submitted it the day my first book was released.
Little did I know then that there would be eight books, and half of them would be written with a guy I'd just met on Facebook, Will Parkinson, aka Parker Williams.

So here we are. That's it.
And yes, I did have a little cry. I'm allowed.

http://kcwellsworld.blogspot.co.uk/20...

Now we're getting ready to release the first book in our new BDSM series, Secrets.
It has quite an act to follow...

Tantalus is at it again!

Remember I 'came out' as Tantalus back in January?
Wow. That seems so long ago now.
Well, I finally got around to finishing the story I started this summer.
It's the fourth instalment in the Damon & Pete series, and this one is all about the Folsom Street fair.
Pete has never seen it, and Damon takes him there. It turns out to be an audition of sorts - Damon wants Pete to be his boy, so he's going to be pushing Pete's limits a little.
But in the end, Damon is the one who is challenged.
Okay, I'm going to apologize now - there is a cliffhanger, all right? Now I know some of you hate them with a passion, but it was the only way to end this one.

And I have news on the Tantalus front!
Starting next year, I'll be working on the first full-length novel of a new series - Leather & Kink.
The first book is called Learning the Notes, and here's a taste of what's to come...

Steven Torland is about to reach his fiftieth birthday, and to celebrate the occasion, his publicist decides it’s time someone wrote a biography of the famous composer and musician. When writer Kyle Mann is approached with the idea, he’s flattered and he leaps at the chance. It will be his first biography. The idea of spending six months getting to know Steven and researching his history excites him, but there is the added frisson that Steven is sexy as hell. Kyle has always had a thing for older men, and it’s no secret that Steven is gay. In his heart Kyle knows it’s just a fantasy, but he can still dream, right?
It doesn’t take Steven long to realize he wants Kyle in his bed, and Steven usually gets what he wants. But Kyle proves to be more than a convenient fuck. There’s something about him that leads Steven to think maybe it’s time to let Kyle see the real Steven Torland, the one who frequents San Francisco’s leather bars. Steven aims to take things nice and slow, because he doesn’t want this one to get away. He wants its all – a lover in his life and a boy in his bed – and he wants to see just how far he can push Kyle, and what Kyle is prepared to do to please him.
Kyle has no idea how his life is about to change….

As this is probably my last blog post before Christmas, I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays, and hope that it's a good time for you.
I know I'm not alone in wanting to see the back of 2016, so here's hoping 2017 will be a vast improvement.

December is here!|!!

It seems fitting on December 1 that I should be sharing details of my Christmas story.
I didn't write one last year, and so this year I was determined.
Okay, I'm going to say this now.
If you like angst? This is not for you.
Pain? Nope.
Heart-tugging situations? Move along, nothing for you here...

BUT..

If you like romance, sweetness, a silver fox who's coming to terms with being gay and discovering love for the first time...
Then yes, you'll like this.

The cover of Saving Jason is very special for me. I asked a good friend, Stephen Land, if he'd be on it. Not only did he say yes, he found me my silver fox! And as for the expression on Stephen's face as he gazes into Denis's eyes...
Wow.

I hope you like it. Happy Holidays!

PLOT BUNNIES!!!

They're trying to kill me.
I mean, really!
There I am, happily typing away, engrossed in my latest WIP - the first book in the new BDSM series Secrets that Parker Williams and I are co-writing - and up pops a deceptively cute, fluffy little creature with big eyes, a little cottontail - and an idea for a book....
Another one.
In the last two days I had two of the little furry bastards - TWO - interrupt me in full flow.
And with two very different books.
Want to see what I mean?

Okay, the first one did come to me while watching a scene from a *cough* porn site *cough*.
No title as yet, but that will have to change before I start writing - it's a quirk: no title, no typing...

When Max lost his son, brother and sister-in-law to a car crash, his whole world collapsed, but he lived through the grief to emerge stronger. He started up a counselling group for those friends who’d also lost loved ones, and in turn helped a lot of people. Okay, so there’s no one special in his life, but he’s doing just fine. A little lonely, perhaps, and his weekly meetings have become a lifeline. He certainly didn’t expect to find himself attracted to another man.

Davy was in a car crash with his parents, who died at the scene. He survived, but without the use of his legs. There’s a whole lot of guilt brewing inside him, and he’s not coping well with either the loss of his parents or his ability to walk. When a friend suggests a counselling group, Davy reluctantly agrees to give it a try. It can’t hurt, right? That is, if he can work out how to get the damn wheelchair he’s now trapped in up to the apartment where they’re holding the goddamn meeting…

Davy sees Max as a father figure, someone who knows where he’s coming from. Someone to share his dating woes with as he tries to step out of his comfort zone for the first time. Davy is starting to discover that getting a second date when all they can see is the wheelchair, is pretty impossible. But as he and Max grow closer, Davy realizes that he wants the older, handsome man – in his life and in his bed. Of course, two things stand in the way of that goal – Max being straight, and that damn chair… Because why should Max prove different to every other man Davy’s been interested in?

And then this one came to me in a restaurant in the south of France while I was visiting my Dad. 'Luke' was a real person, as were his dinner guests - the rest was my imagination...

Jonathon isn’t regretting his last-minute decision to fly to Montpellier in the south of France. Of course, it would be better if he was there on his honeymoon as originally planned, but hey, what do you do when you catch your shit of a fiancé in bed with your best friend? His now ex-fiancé raved about the French city, so Jonathon decides, what the hell – he needs a break anyway, and there's the ticket just sitting there, not to mention the hotel room. And the mature hot guy on the flight certainly made the journey fly by. Too bad Jonathon didn’t get up enough nerve to actually speak to him. But when he grabs some lunch before he can check into his hotel, he spots the gorgeous guy again – meeting with a young woman wearing an engagement ring, and two older women. Jonathon spends his time coming up with all kinds of scenarios to explain what he’s seeing.

Luke is not having a good day. He’d been dreading this for months, and now that it’s really happening… Oh, he’s overjoyed for his daughter, and he can’t wait to meet the man she’s marrying in a week’s time. But having to put up with his ex-wife – and the woman she left him for – is proving too difficult a prospect to swallow. He’d do anything to wipe that smug look off her face. When the meal is over, he spots the young man from his flight that morning. An invitation to share a drink – and their woes – leads to Jonathon making a surprise – but deliciously wicked – suggestion: why not take him to the wedding as Luke’s boyfriend? Luke is already grinning at the thought of Marie’s expression…

Then Jonathon’s plans take a downward dive when he gets to his hotel. It seems someone else has already checked into his room – with a guest…

In case you were wondering?
This happens a LOT. I have a folder full of these.
I get asked where I get my ideas from.
That's easy - EVERYWHERE.
I take a shower - in pops an idea.
I take a walk. I watch TV. I read the paper / a magazine article / you name it...

Now, let me make one thing very clear.
I don't mind the plot bunnies. After all, where would I be without them?
What bugs me is why they couldn't bring me a few more hours in the day at the same time...

the 99c read....

I've been thinking a lot lately about how the industry is going, and it's not good.

When I read a post today on Facebook, I realized I wasn't the only one who thought that way.

So I wrote a post...

Some of you may disagree with the comments in here. I'm betting a lot of you won't, however.

The end is nigh...

Today I received my copies of Endings and Beginnings, the last book in the Collars & Cuffs series. It releases on Monday.
Mixed emotions here.
I'm really proud of this series. Back in November 2012 when I submitted An Unlocked Heart, there were only going to be three books.
I hadn't counted on Will Parkinson, aka Parker Williams :-)

Sad too. Those books have meant a lot to many people. To have each new book so well received has been nothing short of amazing.

Well, Parker and I have some more stories to tell, and a new series to share with you. It won't be around until next year, but we hope the men of Secrets make as good an impression as the men of Collars & Cuffs.

Watch this space...
