Upright Canine Charges Witnesses in Northeast Montana

2 Montana men are driving on a rural road at night when they observe a dark mass in the road. As they stop and watch, the canine creature stands upright and charges at the pair.

The following account was recently sent to me:

"This incident occurred in summer of 1993 in rural northeast Montana. While driving home one evening, I spot something in the middle of the road up ahead. My friend in the passenger seat notices it at the same time, and says, “What the f*ck is that, dude?” At first, we can’t tell what we are looking at, but as the car draws nearer to the big black shape in the middle of the road, it starts to look like a mass of fur. I think it must be an animal, but it looks big enough to do damage to my car, so I slow down and stop the car about 20 feet away from the thing. At this point, it is completely illuminated by the headlights, but neither of us can figure out what the hell kind of animal it might be.

Since it hasn’t moved, we assume it must be dead and start to argue over who will drag it over to the side of the road. That’s when the thing starts to rise up. We silently watch as it stirs, then suddenly stands up.

I preface the next part of the story with “I know this sounds crazy, but-“. I really can't describe what I saw, because I had never seen anything like it before. The closest I can come is this: the thing, whatever it was, was about seven feet tall when it rose to its full height. Its body was shaped like a human male, but it was covered with a thick, dark fur. The head was not human. It looked almost like a jackal or a German Shepherd, with a long snout and pointed ears, and its eyes were glowing in the headlights the way that a cat’s eyes sometimes glow. It was staring right at us.

I don't know how long we stared back at the thing before we noticed that it was clutching a dead rabbit in one of its enormous hands (paws?). I had barely had time to register this bit of information when the creature suddenly flung the dead rabbit away and took several steps toward the car. We both screamed, and I slammed the car into reverse, made a U-turn, and got the hell out of there." JM

Deer/Canine-Like Humanoid Encountered Near Gallipolis, Ohio

A Ohio teen and his mother encounter a bizarre deer/canine-like humanoid with human-like skin while driving at night near Gallipolis.

The following account was recently forwarded to me:

"This story is from a few years ago but my mother and I remember every single detail of what happened, but I would like some advice. I'm just not sure what we saw.

So when I was about in middle school my mom and I were driving home. It was winter and a full moon because I remember the snow glowing under the moon. It was only 6 PM but really dark.

So we are going about 55 mph when this thing crosses and stops in front of us. The only way I can describe it is that it was if you combined a deer, a dog and a human. It stood about as tall as our windshield, it had the legs of what I can describe as a deer,its back was hunched over and walking on all fours. It had the head of a dog, minus ears, but its eyes were white and it didn't have a tail. The freakish thing about this creature was its skin. It wasn't a canine with mange or anything. It had actual human skin all the way down its legs, too long to be dog legs. It had a rotting meat odor and some parts the flesh was broken open like if you would scrape your knee. It was pale white and you could see its veins.

This thing was FAST! It stood there and just ran across the road in the blink of an eye. My mom had to pull over to calm down, but we both saw it.

This sighting was in southeastern Ohio, near Gallipolis. Did we see a crawler?" GB

NOTE: Gallipolis, Ohio is directly across the Ohio River from Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The Ohio River Valley is rife with strange humanoid encounters, among other anomalous activity. Lon

Bizarre 'Playing Card' Shaped Entity in Northwest Montana

A Montana woman has a bizarre encounter while walking near her home at night. She observe a 'playing card' shaped entity that seemed to be imitating here movement. Any suggestions as to what this was?

I recently received the following inquiry:

"Hi - This happened to me two summers ago:

I live in a very heavily wooded area in the NW part of Montana.  I was living in a small complex of one story apartments surrounded by mountains, a lake and thick woods.  Bears and mountain lions are not at all unusual to see.

I was in the habit of walking a 1/4 of a block away and up a steep hill in order to look at the moon. I would usually stay about 20 minutes.

One night I came down and began walking down the road back to my place.

I looked about 1/4 of a block in front of me and something that was bright white in the shape of a playing card was approaching me. I noticed right away that it was imitating my swagger. This entity was perhaps 8" x 10". The bottom corners were used as feet and the top corners were like hands.

It was very flexible. I stopped and turned to look at it and it stopped and turned toward me. I took one step in its direction and it took one step in my direction.

I freaked out and ran home and locked the door, knowing perfectly well that it could walk through my door if it wanted to. My heart was pounding so hard.  

After I calmed down, I regretted running away because now I will never know what it was. I don't hang out in the woods at night anymore since I was told that nighttime is when the mountain lions feed.

I just discovered your page today and as soon as I saw it, I had to tell you. When I tried to tell friends, they brushed it off - like I was imagining things.

Large Muscular Creature & UFO Seen in Mackinac County, Michigan

A Michigan man was driving on I-75 in Mackinac County when he observes a large muscular creature crossing in front of him. Afterwards, a bright UFO quickly ascends into the sky.

The following account was recently forward to me by a reader:

"One night this past winter I was driving on I-75, a couple hundred yards south of the Bay Road overpass in Mackinac County, Michigan. I noticed something move near the highway reflectors. Thinking it was a deer I turned on the bright lights and watched for it to cross the road.

As I approached it I notice that what I thought was the reflectors on the highway were orange, and then it blinked on and off like an eye. Thinking, "what the heck is that?" I sped up to get closer. As I got closer I could see the silhouette of the animal. It was sitting like a dog, its head was even with the reflectors. It stood on all 4s and turned and walked down in the ditch then up a little incline then turned and looked at my truck. It turned back to the highway walked on all 4s to the shoulder of the blacktop looked at the truck again with those orange eyes. The eyes were huge. It then jumped to within a foot or two of the center line, and then the next jump landed in the grass on the shoulder of the road. I was probably like 100 feet from it. This animal was rippling in muscles, and looked like it weighed around 500 pounds if not more. Its hair which covered its body looked short and its head was huge with hardly no neck.

After I passed were it crossed I hit the brakes, as there were no cars on the highway, and started to back up. As I got close to the spot where it crossed I suddenly felt fear and thought, "What the hell am I doing?" I put the truck back in drive and began to leave.

As I was rolling the window up I glanced back and noticed a light, bright like a flood light, ascending into the sky at a high rate of speed. It was at a angle of about 1 o'clock and in just a few seconds was out of sight. Something else that was strange was there were not any light rays trailing it." Name withheld

'Skinwalker' Transformation Observed Near Albuquerque, NM

A man is with friends on a mesa outside of Albuquerque, NM when he encounters a coyote that stands on its back legs and seems to transform into a native man.

This is another account I had stashed in my JC Johnson file:

"in 2004, I was out with some friends on the mesa outside of Albuquerque, NM. Half of the group wandered off to go sneak up on a party and scare them, so I was left with my friend's girlfriend. I didn't know her that well at the time so we were standing around awkwardly not talking when we both heard footsteps about 50 feet away. There's no light out there so I couldn't see what was making them and she is practically blind.

I sneak off and around to try and see what it is. I get close enough, probably 20 feet, and I see a coyote walking. I said "oh" or something to that effect quietly and it looked over at me. This is weird because as far as I know, coyotes travel in packs, tend to avoid humans, and have huge ears, which wouldn't allow me to sneak up on one. It starts walking off and this is when the strangest thing happened. It appeared, very fluidly and naturally, to stand up on it's hind legs. For a couple seconds it looked very much like a middle-aged native. It walked behind down into a shallow ravine and I couldn't see it anymore.

I hauled ass back to the cars, told her to get in and lock the door. Then I left to go find my friend (with the Colt 1911). I just told him I saw someone. He looked around and couldn't find any tracks. I was very confused at that point. Later I started telling one of my close friends about it and before I finished she jumped in and said "sounds like a skinwalker."

I've tried doing research on skinwalkers but it is very hard to find information. Apparently it's a type of Navajo "black magic" where the shaman can move his spirit to other places, and manifest as an animal that may or may not be of his choosing. They work outside of the mainstream religion, and tend to sell their services. I can't find any more info beyond that." BR

News & Notes: 2nd Recent Strange Encounter Reported Near Spruce Knob, West Virginia

A family is camping in the Spruce Knob area in West Virginia recently. An unknown 'figure' or 'silhouette' suddenly manifests outside the tent during the night.

I came across this recent post on social media:

"My husband, son and I went camping in rural West Virginia, kind of traveling around other parts of the state we don’t get to often enough.

We live in the Eastern Panhandle, but the places we camped were in Grant/Hardy Co., Pendleton County, Lost River area, and Spruce Knob, closer to the middle of the state. We camped Friday-Monday and had no cell service the while time.

Anyway, our second night, we set up at Spruce Knob (Monongahela National Forest). It’s not a ‘campsite,’ it’s a fire ring we found on a good hike from the long, quiet, sparsely populated country road. So not serious backpacking, but not populated by any means. People occasionally drive up to see the overlook, but after sunset, we generally hear no cars and could not see/hear evidence of others camping nearby, not even a distant fire.

We got in our tent around 9 or 10 PM. And about 30 minutes later, my husband describes this primal, overwhelming fear sense that something is off, so he’s wide awake, and so is our son. The tent flap/rain cover moved or made an odd but quiet rustle, then suddenly, he sees a human-like figure standing right next to our tent, like close, a silhouette. An imposing stance, and tall, like staring into the dark tent looking down at us inside. It just ..appeared. There were no sounds like a bear or person would make approaching the tent, except for possibly the wind moving our rain cover, which was a very quiet and odd sound, not someone walking up.

My husband yells HEY! HEY!, etc. And clapped/made noise, because maybe it is a bear, and his first thought was to scare it off.

It wasn’t moving around, it was very still, not swaying with the pretty non-existent/gentle wind, like a tree moving or how eye tricks would appear. It was just standing (hovering) there.

It hung around a few more seconds after my husband made noise, then it just kind of ‘evaporated’ or vanished; still no sound. Like a good horror movie. He got out and looked around with the flashlight, still yelling, clapping, looking around. He found no disturbance, no tracks, no rustling or any noise. Simply gone.

Now I know it’s very possible this is some trick of the eye. We always feel very safe in these woods/know them well, so him having that fear response immediately before seeing this or hearing the rain flap is unusual. He doesn’t just get creeped out for no reason. We’re built with instincts, so they should be trusted.

Also, based on where the moon was (waning crescent), offering very little light, not enough to create a silhouette) and our campfire was out (plus the ‘apparition?’ was close to the woods, on the back side of the tent; so even if our campfire was going, the angle would be wrong to create that illusion).

It’s bothering us because there’s not really a good explanation. I want to reiterate we never get bad vibes while camping like this. We’re experienced in the woods and I’m always armed.

I so wished we’d snapped a pic or something, but panicking about a bear/scary ax murderer/ghost whatever, taking a pic didn’t cross our minds. It was all too quick anyway - felt like forever but this was probably only a good 60-90 seconds.

So. Mothman? Anyone had anything similar happen? We may be going back next weekend because other than our visitor, we had so much fun and it was a lovely camp spot (or would that be pushing our luck?)

Terrifying Upright Canine Encounter in Matanuska-Susitna Valley, Alaska

An Alaskan man encounters an upright canine while driving late at night in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. The terrifying incident occurred in the fall of 1998.

The following account was recently forwarded to me:

I was traveling on a local road in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, about 30 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska. This occurred in the fall of 1998. It was close to midnight, when my headlights caught a large, dark figure up ahead. I'm bad at judging distance, but I believe it was maybe 6 car lengths away. I instinctively let off the gas, coasting closer.

At first I assumed it was a moose, as the area is infested with them. But no, it was standing upright. Bear, then? No, not a bear. It looked so strange. It was tall enough to be an uncommonly large bear, but far too slender. It looked like it had spikes running down its neck and back. Was I being pranked? All those thoughts ran through my head in a fraction of a second.

The car was still coasting closer and I could see more details. It was standing in profile, gazing across the road. I could clearly see its wolf-like muzzle and large, upright ears. The 'spikes' on its back were in fact clumps of fur. Its spine curved in a smooth, very natural-looking way. It was standing in the ditch, inches from the road surface. Because I was focused on its upper body, I do not recall anything about its back legs or if it had a tail. I did see its front legs though. These were very 'dog-like,' hanging awkwardly down and slightly toward its front. Exactly as you'd expect if a dog stood upright. While it clearly had a canine look, there was still something 'off' about it that I cannot articulate. It was perfectly still, and at this point, given the proximity to Halloween, I was quite convinced it was some sort of Halloween prop, because it was clearly not any kind of existing animal. I was deeply impressed and gently stepped on the brakes, intending to stop and examine it closely.

Then it turned its head towards me. In the tiny fraction of a second that it took for it to swivel its head, I knew I had made a terrible mistake. The fluidness of its movement removed any and all doubt that this was some kind of prop. It was horribly, terrifyingly alive. The pale, off-white glow of its eyeshine in the headlights destroyed any possibility of a human in a costume. I think I sat there gaping at it in shock for a few seconds, the car barely moving by now, but still inching closer. As I was almost upon it (I think it could have leaned forward and touched the car if it had wanted) I had to look up to see its face. Again, I'm a bad judge of such things, but I am 5'4" and it was a hell of a lot taller than me. Tall like a polar bear standing. 7-8 at least, I really can't say.

I snapped out of my trance and slammed on the gas. The car fishtailed and I prepared myself for death-by-monster, as I was certain I'd end up in the ditch, but the tires caught the pavement and I drove like a complete maniac all the way home. I did not look back." D

'....when the skies of November turn gloomy'

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down

Among the photos of the Edmund Fitzgerald that Great Lakes explorer Frederick Shannon shared was an image with two unexplained orbs or burning objects about the size of golf balls.


Known as Image 2028, the photo was among more than a thousand taken by Shannon from inside a two-person Delta submarine while hovering 530 feet below the surface of Lake Superior off the starboard (right) side of the Fitzgerald's bow in July 1994.

"No debris was in the water, and nothing was dropped from the surface," Shannon said. "There is no logical explanation for their sudden appearance."

The objects, which left a trail of bubbles in the murky photo, floated toward and disappeared into the hull of the ship, he said.

Fitzgerald Legend and Mystery Live On

The mystery. The history. That song.

Whatever the reasons, the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald endures as a subject of endless fascination.

"That doesn't surprise me," Tom Farnquist, executive director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, said Monday, as he fielded an annual round of calls about the Nov. 10 anniversary of the disaster and the ceremony that will mark it Wednesday at Whitefish Point.

"There are schoolkids who do a report on it, and they just get obsessed into adulthood with it," he said. "It happened recently enough (1975) that a lot of people are still around who remember it.

"And there are still probably more questions and theories than answers. ... There's a full explanation for all the other shipwrecks, but nothing was ever conclusive about the Fitzgerald. There were no survivors. And that song ..."

"That song" is "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," by Canadian troubadour Gordon Lightfoot, which, despite its grim subject, climbed to No.2 on the Billboard pop charts within a year of the disaster and is replayed on radio stations around the country every November.

Lightfoot was initially subjected to some criticism for making a commercial success out of the tragedy, but insisted that the song was a tribute to the crew and today enjoys a good relationship with the families of the men who were lost.

"He came here in '95 for the ceremony, and the families asked him to never stop singing it because it is keeping those men alive," Farnquist said.

He said about a dozen relatives of the 29-man crew lost on the Fitzgerald are expected at Whitefish Point for this year's observance. The society's museum at the Point -- the nearest land to the wreck site -- houses the 200-pound bell from the Fitzgerald, which was recovered in 1995.

The Shipwreck Museum, at the end of a road leading to Lake Superior, is only open May 1-Oct. 31.

"Up where we are, you have to want to drive here, you're not going to happen upon us," Farnquist said. "They want to know about the Fitzgerald. Some people just want to stand on the shore and look out at the lake, as if they want to feel it."

At 729 feet long, the Fitz was a giant among lakes freighters. It lies in only about 550 feet of water, a testament to the forces of nature on the Great Lakes.

That may be some of the allure of the Fitzgerald story here in the Great Lakes State, where you grow up being warned "don't argue with the lakes" and get quickly to shore when skies darken.

People from elsewhere who have no concept of the scope of the lakes -- or the fury they can unleash -- may wonder how such a mighty vessel could be destroyed in waters not nearly as deep as the boat was long. But those who have seen the lakes angry, those who know that the loss of the Fitz was, in fact, far from the worst of many such Great Lakes tragedies, understand the power that comes with the beauty around us.

And each year, around now, they remember. They think about those 29 men and their mighty ship. And they wonder, as Gordon Lightfoot did, "does anyone know where the love of God goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours. - Detroit Free Press

Sasquatch Abducts & Kills Native Man in 1970s

A native American man is literally abducted by a Sasquatch while sitting with family on his porch. The man was later found, beaten so badly that he soon died afterwards. The Sasquatch was killed by the locals.

T he following account was referred to me by a reader:

"This story is passed down through relatives that did not openly talk about it much due to the way these Native Americans revered Sasquatch and felt guilty about killing one. They especially felt guilty because this sasquatch was believed to be more human than an average Sasquatch.

The Salish Indian who recounts this story makes this comment about this particular wild man. A 'Skanicum' is a word for someone born not of a direct human but of Sasquatch kind. This might seem like a cruel joke, something to call a human with developmental disabilities etc... but the honest to God truth may be too hard to swallow. That Sasquatch have interbred with women in the past and the existence of these offspring has been swept under the rug and kept hidden - like the Hairy Man.

During the 60's it was rumored that one of the town bishops of the local church, likely a Jesuit, had 'taken in' a 'freak' of some sort. This 'freak' was not human, but not animal enough to be rejected by the Jesuit, so the Jesuit was keeping him in the basement and feeding him. The only reason knowledge of this exists is because people would hear things at the church, inhuman things. If you ask me, the Jesuits did not want this thing to be 'out and about.' This sounds somewhat unbelievable, but keep in mind that the reason the men who shot the Hairy Man went a little 'insane' was because they killed a human. A giant, ridiculously muscular human, covered in hair...but a human. Too human to parade about town in the back of a pickup truck, if you know what I mean.

The sasquatch or "Skanicum" of this story had become particularly bold about raiding the homes when people were away and stealing their food.

The account starts when the Wild Man was having his way. Free reign. He was getting bold. He started to break into houses during the middle of the day. Children would see him and flip out. Police were called. Meetings were held. The town was becoming more and more shaken up by the presence of this unknown intruder.

This was when something incredible happened to the particular family who was 'favorited' by the Hairy Man. They had become so lax and accepting of the Hairy Man's presence that one night, while standing on the porch, the father was yanked off by his feet in full view of the entire family. They screamed and huddled together and cried while whatever it was 'fought' with the Dad on the porch. The sounds of fighting and screaming and knowing that your father was powerless against whatever it was. It must have been unspeakably traumatic for the kids. They are now grown up, like myself, and I wonder to this day how much this affected their lives.

The father was gone. For days. Whatever it was that had taken him had carried him off into the night after a struggle on the porch. There was blood on the grass and the family grabbed neighbors and men of the community to help recover the father. The men got together and followed the signs and trails left by whatever it was. Drops of blood and signs of something large passing through, they followed this trail all the way to the very creek which my uncle had spotted a Sasquatch at. They followed the creek all night.

When the men returned the next day, they didn't speak a word. A whole group of grown men, and not one of them was willing to speak about what happened. They had however, found the father. They recovered him. He was beaten black and blue over his entire body, ribs broken, arms and legs broken. The father was in shock. Incoherent. Couldn't speak a word.

One of my uncles had gone to see the man and his family in the hospital. There was a fair amount of good will being shown to the family that went through this experience. Nobody knew what happened, only that the father was close to death and the family was very shaken up. So my uncle stopped by to pay his respects, and saw for himself the father lying in the hospital. His eyes were bulging wide, he was trembling constantly. This man had been beaten badly - but something else was wrong with him. He was traumatized. He died that night and to this day nobody knows what grabbed him or what happened to him.

To this day, the men who went on the recovery mission to save him have kept these stories to themselves. Only a select circle, including my father, remembers these incidents. Almost nobody talks about them. I have shared them with you, for whatever it's worth.

Those men found what it was that took that father. They found the Hairy Man, and they killed it. They shot it to death with high powered rifles and buried the body.

The men who did this feel incredibly guilty. Sasquatch is a matter of fact here, and the older generations told us to avoid them and leave them alone, because they are human beings . They are not 'animals' and they are not 'magic.' They can most certainly be monsters and this is one story that corroborates that.

But the Hairy Man, Bigfoot, is so human-like, that even here, when a group of men killed one, they were so traumatized by the experience that they felt guilty of murder.

Back in the 70's there was no desire to be 'rich and famous' for killing a Bigfoot. There was no desire to even talk about Bigfoot. These kind of things were 'dirty little secrets', especially on reservations. Yes there were plenty of white kids bumping into Bigfoot and getting in the newspapers, but the indian community is tight lipped about this - even still to this day." WNYguy
