Southern Appalachians High Strangeness Accounts
5 different high strangeness accounts from the southern Appalachians, including a 'T-Rex' cryptid, a crawler humanoid and various UFOs and weird sounds.
Here are a few account that I recently came across:
"I've saw some weird looking thing about 10 years ago in Henderson County, NC while walking in the woods. There were 2 other witnesses. My dog followed it and never came back as well. Wish I had pictures, but it was as big as a black bear, but it crossed about 15ft in front of us. Craziest part was it in a pretty cleared out area of the woods but just appeared from nowhere. It made no sounds also. My description of the thing is it was black in color, had ears long like a rabbit, it ran hunched over but only on its back legs. It had like T-Rex style arms. Left no marks and made no sounds. Scared the shit out of us. I can still recall the exact place we were standing when it happened. I've never heard of a cryptid creature that meets the description though." N

"In the mountains of western North Carolina, my sister was house sitting at a farm in the country. There was a pool outside and we were sitting at it one evening. The farm owner's dog was outside with us. The pool area was fenced in, but beyond the fence, it was really dark and you couldn't see much. We're talking and suddenly the dog goes to the far corner of the fence and starts growling. We're trying to call her back to us but something just on the other side of the fence growled. This growl made my blood run cold and we ran inside the house. I'm not sure what it was, but it was terrifying. Also didn't sleep that night because the house was so old and creepy. It felt like somebody was constantly watching." PD

"I spent my summers in the southeast Tennessee tri-state are of NC, GA and TN. Saw lots of weird stuff. Saw lights three times that I cant explain. Moved erratically and slowly swept across broad valleys too low and too quiet to be a helicopter. Another time a friend and I saw what looked like three satellites moving in formation then the top and bottom started zig zagging and then shot off while the middle one shot off seconds after. Finally I was at a wedding on top of a mountain and some of the party kept pointing at a light. I swore was just a telephone tower then after hours of being stationary it slowly floats away. Some of the most serious mountain men you could meet have seen things they can't explain and I believe them more than any story you could read off the internet. I actually called into the monsters among us pod once if you want me to find my recording so you can hear them more in depth.
I have one humanoid story that was relayed to be my best friend. To preface, I have after much pressing heard him relay other stories or legends he has heard from his family and basically describing crawlers without giving them the name. He and another mutual friend were on a hike deep into a camping spot called Jack's River Falls in north Georgia. Once there they settled in for the night around a fire. They heard what they thought was a bear trudging on the out side of their camp. These guys are mountain folk, and not easily spooked, but they didn't enjoy the vibe that was in the air. They then heard this same sound but this time above them. They could hear whatever this large thing was jumping in the trees this time all around them staying in the top levels. Finally a large branch broke off and fell right behind them. This was enough to grow the fire as large as they could and keep their pistols on their side. They stayed up all night and got out of there as soon as day broke." FC

"My experience was a long time ago. It was by the Lost Sea Cave in Sweetwater, TN. I saw a UFO once and freaked out. Found out later that my nephew had numerous visits from UFOs in the middle of the night. He would call for his momma, but she was legally blind (totally blind now, except for shadows). She said she could only see the lights. What has your friend been seeing? My sister in law said there was a lot of UFO and ghost sightings in that area." MC

"I live in eastern Kentucky near the Tennessee border and we hear strange noises all the time. About a week ago we were outside after dark and heard something howling. This is where my family is from so we’re used to hearing all sorts of animals and howls, and we’ve heard this type of howl before but we have no idea what it is. It sounds a lot like a man yelling. Just like a 'AAAAAAAAaaaaa' kind of sound. But last week when it started we heard another one calling back to it. Just the way the second one sounded made us think it was younger/smaller. It’s also not unusual for us to see bright lights at night. Sometimes we see it through the trees and sometimes it’s like they’re appearing in our yard. I have a story of seeing a possible portal in this area too, but that happened about a year ago." BD

Did Sleep Paralysis Develop Into Higher Consciousness Connection?
I recently received the following email from someone who has experienced multiple bouts of sleep paralysis. It seems to me that this experiencer eventually connected with a higher consciousness at some point. Your thoughts?
"I wanted to tell you about a very odd sleep paralysis incident I had about 2 years ago. I started having sleep paralysis about 6 times a year or so starting in my late teens/early 20’s, somewhere around 1998. This only happened in my childhood bedroom at first. I never had it when I was in college/tech school or at anyone else’s house.
When I was married (divorced now), I started having incidents again. They were all similar in nature. I would be able to see the bedroom and everything in it exactly as it was if the lights were on. I never saw an entity or even heard one, but I knew SOMETHING was in the room with me, and it wasn’t friendly. It gave off a vibe that had me feeling terrified, and it was always in the shadows, usually in the corner of the room by the closet or behind the bedroom door. Our marriage was extremely toxic, and towards the end of it we were basically keeping it going just for our daughter. After the divorce, I moved home and back into my old bedroom.
About 2 years ago, I fell asleep with the TV on in my room, when I had another incident of sleep paralysis. The first thing that is odd about this is that the TV was on. All my other incidents were in complete darkness. Now for the really odd part. It started off as normal with extreme fear washing over me. As my eyes moved slightly to the right, I saw something on the wall about 6 feet or so off the ground. It was sort of round but didn’t have a true shape if that makes sense. It wasn’t solid, but wasn’t completely translucent either. I guess the best way I can describe it would be that it resembled the “blur” that is put on peoples’ faces when they don’t want their identity revealed on TV.
About 30 seconds in, the feeling changed and I heard a voice. The voice didn’t come from one specific area, but it was as if it was everywhere, and it sounded male. The voice said: “Do you feel that?” In my mind I responded: “Yes”. The voice asked: “What are you feeling?” I stated: “Love. It’s pure love”. The best way that I can describe that feeling is when a parent sees their child for the very first time, multiplied by a million. It was the most powerful concentrated emotion that I have ever felt! The feeling was also just in my chest and not washed over my entire body as with the terror that I had felt in previous incidents. The voice then told me: “Love is what I am. Now look at it”. I looked at the blurry thing on the wall and it instantly disintegrated. With that, I “woke up” as I did with every other incident. Only this time, that feeling of pure love stayed with me for almost a full minute, rather than instantly dissipating as the feeling of terror/fear used to!
Let me state that I do not follow any religion and if I had to classify myself, it would be agnostic. This “voice” never said who it was. My own theory on sleep paralysis is that our brain is so powerful, that perhaps we can enter or open up a portal when the circumstances are just right, and that this entity was close by when I opened it. I have not had a single episode of sleep paralysis in the two years since this happened." T

Of course, I'd like to prioritize the claims which have evidentiary proof to back-up the firsthand accounts, but it's not required.

1897 UFO Landing Incident Near Danville, Pennsylvania
A young boy and his friend observe a saucer-shaped craft land near Danville, PA in 1897. They approached the craft and describe how hot it was. It left a crater after it had ascended.
I recently received the following account:
"Hi Lon. People talk of UFOs/UAPs being "government issue" so to speak. But what about the UFOs/UAPs before the military industrial age? That's where my grandfather George's story comes into play. This story was told originally by George A. to my mother Catherine L. and now to me.
It was in the year 1897 and George lived on a farm in Danville, PA, with his mother and father (and it was winter during this particular time) and George and his friend were doing what kids do, playing in the snow, on many acres of farmland. But right by the barrier there was an old fence and then tree line. The two kids looked up and saw a sliver "iconic" saucer-shape craft that landed just beyond the tree line where the two kids were standing by the fence. Moments after, the two kids ran, climbed over the barrier and pass the tree line to a small opening in the forest were the craft landed. When they came so close the object was hot and almost gave them a sunburn later that day.
As they approached the shiny craft took off in a very nonchalant way, just like it had landed. My grandfather and his friend took off back to his mother's house back at the farm and George and his friend told the family all about what had happened.
The next morning, neighbors and George's folks investigated past that barrier and pass the tree line and saw a shallow crater. That was the end of it, no one spoke of this after, until my grandfather relayed this to my mother and now to me.
I just wanted to add since you are very familiar with the Pennsylvania, can you tell me anything about the area surrounding Danville, because the only thing that I can tell you according to google maps is that it's in the middle of nowhere." TL
NOTE: I called TL and we talked about the incident. He mentioned that a large area of snow was also melted where the craft landed. Danville is approximately 15 miles northeast of the Montour Ridge where the Todd Sees incident occurred in August 2002. The overall area, throughout the Susquehanna River Valley, is well-known for UFO activity. We really appreciate these early reports. Lon

Border Patrol Agents Enter a Bizarre 'Time Slip' Off I-10 in Texas
A pair of Border Patrol Agents are on an errand, driving east on I-10 towards San Antonio, Texas. In need of gas, they pull off the highway and then enter into a possible time slip. Weird incident.
I recently received the following account from Kyle & Cam at Expanded Perspectives:
"Back when I was a Border Patrol Agent, I was sent out to El Paso, Texas to bring back a trailer full of equipment in the middle of January. My partner Dave and I were on duty but not in uniform since we had to load and unload the trailer ourselves. We stashed our pistols in our bags.
We left El Paso enroute to San Antonio, and then Laredo. As the sun was going down about half way between Fort Stockton and Sheffield we were running low on gas so we looked for a station. Not much out there. On the side of the road we saw a sign that said "GAS STATION" right before an exit. I pulled off I-10 and onto the feeder which went up hill and over an overpass. There was no side road, only one way to go.
Once we were on the other side of I-10 the road became narrow. Just about one vehicle wide and it was in bad shape. Pulling the trailer we had no where to turn around so we stayed on the road hoping the gas station was getting close.
The road dead ended in the parking lot of a store. It looked like something out of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." There were two pumps with a bulb hanging down at the end of an electric cord. These were older style pumps with the numbered dials and no pay at the pump available. If not for the gas gage sitting on empty I would have turned around and left.
Dave said he'd fill up while I went in to pay.
I walked to the building, opened the door, stepped through, and froze. My hand automatically went to the spot where my holster would have been had I been in uniform. Inside the store were five or six men, mostly in overalls sitting in folding metal chairs around a black and white TV. The volume was way down and the picture looked as if it was in need of a better antenna. They all stared at me without so much as a word.
Behind the counter was a skinny guy dressed in only his jeans. No shirt or shoes. He was missing way too many teeth. I looked at the guys around the TV, then at the guy behind the counter, then back at the guys at the TV. I felt as if they were sizing me up for some nasty event in the near future. That small voice in the back of your head that tries to save you from time to time suggested I should leave.
I handed the guy behind the counter the government credit card and told him I wanted to fill the truck. He took the card and looked at it as if he didn't know what it was. Next he reached under the counter and pulled out one of those old style credit card machines, the kind you ran back and forth to make an imprint of the raised numbers on the cards. He had to look around for the right forms to place in the machine. Just as he was handing me the receipt Dave came through the door. He froze and I saw his hand go to the spot where his holster should have been. He backed out the door and I followed him as quick as I could without running.
Once back on I-10 we talked about what we had just seen and what we thought we had run into. We talked it over all the way to San Antonio.
A couple years later my wife had to go to San Diego and so as we were driving on I-10 passed Sheffield I began looking for the exit. There was nothing even remotely like the overpass we had used that night.
When I got home I looked on Map Quest and Google Earth but could find no trace of the overpass, the road or the station." ST

Texas Mother Concerned About Son's 'Pale Humanoid' Encounters
A concerned mother inquires about encounters that her son and his friends have had with a pale humanoid in the rural area around they're home outside of Houston, Texas.
I recently found the following inquiry:
"I'm a concerned mother. We live in a small town, considered semi-rural, over an hour outside Houston, Texas. My son is 14, his two best friends 13 and 14. They are ‘country’ kids who fish and explore the creeks around our neighborhood almost as much as they play video games. (They are into fishing, camping, bushcraft - just really outdoorsy teens who keep out of trouble and go fishing a lot. Good, honest kids.) Our neighborhood is about 150 acreage homesites with the smallest being 1 acre and the largest around 20 acres. Lots of woods, tall pine trees, and creeks. The neighborhood is basically surrounded by wooded flood plain where nothing can be built and lots of intertwining creeks that flood in heavy rains. There are literally thousands of deer. Soil is sandy loam and height above sea level might be 600 feet so. No caves that I’m aware of.
Around 2 months ago my son came home and told me he had seen a glimpse of something in the woods. All 3 boys were at a part of a creek they had not frequented much before. My son glanced up and saw the nude, unusually light grayish skinned back of an extremely thin humanoid. It seemed to be 4-5 feet tall and moving away from them, slouching, moving in a weird, distinct way and on all fours with really long arms. He directed his friend’s attention to it but it was just a glimpse as it moved away from them behind some brush next to a large, thick old tree and just seemed to be gone. They didn’t hear it move off or see anything else.
The reason he felt comfortable telling me is because I had already warned him that there were things living in the woods that we share this planet with. My great-uncle, who lived to 83, spent his entire retirement “deer hunting” with little more than binoculars on his property in north central Texas. He clocked literal decades sitting in tree stands in the woods and once I was in my early 20’s, he told me there were “things in these old woods we don’t even know about but they’re there”. I’m certain he had seen things/creatures. I passed the verbal knowledge and warning onto my outdoor-loving son around age 12, in the hopes it would help him stay calm and not fear nature forever after if he ever saw anything in the woods.
Today my son and 13 year old friend were back fishing the creek, just the 2 of them. They had been exploring in the sandy creek bottom, crouched over looking at things in the water. They got hungry so they packed up their small gear items (minnow net, Easter candy trash) to head home. My son stood up while putting on his day pack and locked eyes with this gray skinned thing that was watching them. It was peeking out from behind a tree and as my son saw it, he said it ducked its head behind the tree impossibly fast.
My husband and I were outside our house when he rode up on his bike (the creek area is accessible from one of the neighborhood cul-de-sacs). His pants were fully drenched and he looked like he had fallen in or scrambled through the water and sandy banks pretty good. I sent him in to shower, suspecting nothing and kind of distracted by my need to begin preparing Easter dinner.
Later, when it was just us, he told me what had happened. The thing was watching my kid. My only child. He had told his friend that he had just seen it watching them and they immediately left the creek area, his friend clearly being able to hear the truth in the tone of my son’s voice and not wanting to stick around. But yet again, he described it as looking to be 4-5 feet tall and he said it looked like it had no mouth. It is small enough that it hasn’t terrified him, just kind of disturbed him.
All 3 boys have told me the creek in that area feels creepy but being teenagers, they seem to get curious again, overcome their hesitations and go back, even though I request they fish elsewhere.
Looking for some serious input here. Are these things dangerous?" CW

Transit from Venus Etheria to Earth Physical
In late 1958 and early 1959, the esotericist Riley Crabb delivered a series of lectures on “Flying Saucers and the Coming Space Probes” to small gatherings in Southern California. All of these presentations were sponsored by the Borderland Sciences Research Associates (BSRA) of San Diego. At that time, the English literature professor N. Meade Layne was still president of the BSRA, but he was mentoring Crabb to soon take over for him. Layne was getting ready to retire, but felt that Crabb, with his inside track in the Department of Defense, could steer the BSRA in more assertive directions, especially in regard to uncovering conspiracies to conceal the true nature of the UFO phenomenon from the public at large on the part of agencies of the United States government.
During these presentations, Crabb attempted, to the best of his understanding, to explain the transit of the ether ships from Venus Etheria to Earth Physical. During the instantaneous flight of such a saucer between these two disparate types of worlds, Crabb noted that the ship “rides the crest of a magnetic wave of energy from the Sun.” The esotericist pointed out that, in this regard at least, he was speaking of the departure of a Venusian space ship from the surface of the etheric sphere of Venus, rather than its physical or 3-D surface. “Venus Etheria would normally be invisible to us, unreal to us;” remarked Crabb in his discourse, adding, “though it would be quite real, tangible and solid to a person born on that surface and conditioned to its finer matter.”
Crabb pointed out that at the headquarters of the BSRA, the leadership had arrived at an acceptance and understanding of the invisible worlds, such as Venus Etheria, being the key to unravelling the flying saucer conundrum. Until this could be fully grasped by those in positions of authority here on Earth, Crabb noted that, “Flying saucers will forever remain an unsolvable riddle to the material minded.”
Prophetic Insight of Riley Crabb
As if Riley Crabb could read the headlines concerning a space probe that finally arrived at Venus in 2021, he declared back in 1958 and 1959 that, “I have shown the magnetic waves, or flights of cosmic particles from the Sun, as pulsing forth in great spirals, thus conforming to the galactic pattern or hooked cross. In terms of our understanding, any point in the Sun’s field is equidistant from any other point. As Meade Layne has pointed out numberless times in our BSRA bulletins, an hour of Earth time may equate with a million years of solar time, or vice versa. It all depends on the point of view. There is no possibility of really understanding these differences, however, until one has actually experienced them.”

Parker Probe Findings
In the past two and a half years already, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has made four fly-bys of the planet Venus, each time gaining a gravity boost on its journey to the Sun, its primary target for data collection. Nevertheless, it has also sent back much interesting information about our nearest planetary neighbor, Venus. While the probe made its fourth fly-by of Venus on 21 February 2021, no information has yet to be released on that most recent lap. However, the probe, equipped with a camera, managed to snag a photo of Venus on its third fly-by of that world back in August 2020 that is absolutely stunning. Writing for Microsoft News on 26 February 2021, space correspondent Mike Wehner points out that, “The image shows the night side of Venus, complete with what looks like a shower of sparks but what is actually a combination of cosmic rays and pieces of dust and debris that appear as bright dashes. The photo also shows something that scientists weren’t necessarily expecting to see: A bright halo around Venus, extending to its dark side.
“The instrument on the Parker Solar Probe that made this incredible image possible is called WISPR. It’s short for ‘Wide-field Imager for Parker Solar Probe’ (don’t ask me how that makes sense), and it was designed to capture images of the Sun’s corona, inner heliosphere, and also the solar wind, according to NASA, but it also appears to be pretty good at snapping images of planets as well.”
The amazing Venus photo was made possible thanks to the extremely close pass the probe made of Venus. The picture was taken at a distance of just 7,693 miles, which is fairly close in astronomical terms. Wehner opines that, “The cosmic rays and dust give the photo extra flair. It’s hard not to consider this one of the best photos of Venus ever taken.”
The WISPR science team believes that the strange halo around the planet is due to charged oxygen atoms in the Venusian atmosphere that drift to the night side of the planet. However, the recent discovery of phosphines in the Venusian atmosphere indicates the existence of a complex eco-system in the heavy clouds of our sister planet; and as I wrote in my previous Venus Rising series of books, there are vast swarms of bioluminescent insects in the Venusian cloud layers that find their source of nourishment there, thus lighting up the night side of the planet and creating its so-called “limb effect” that puzzled our astronomers for years.
Wehner also states that NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, equipped with infrared-sensitive instrumentation, was able to detect the signatures of “certain features” on the surface of Venus. This revealed a previously unknown “window” that will now allow NASA scientists to peek through the Venusian atmospheric layers. It is such a pity that it has taken months for various findings of the Parker Solar Probe to clear the censors at NASA, who have never been forthright in any of their disclosures about the mysterious planet Venus.
From what has been revealed from the Parker Solar Probe so far, Riley Crabb was correct in the assumptions he was making in the late 1950s that the interactions of Venus Etheria with Earth on the Physical Plane all take place within the context of the electro-gravitic field of the Sun. Of George Adamski’s initial contact with the Venusian “Orthon,” he writes in Flying Saucers Have Landed (British Book Centre, New York, New York, 1953), the book he co-authored with Desmond Leslie, that, “Certain students of this subject have asked me if I thought saucers and their occupants might normally be ‘etheric’ in nature or texture, but be able to ‘condense’ and so take on ‘solidarity’ and ‘visibility’ in Earth’s environment.
“This is an involved subject. There are, of course, more things in heaven and Earth than we have dreamed of and it never pays to be too arbitrary about those things which as yet we ‘see through a glass darkly’. But for now, I am confining myself to a factual accounting of what I actually saw and heard on that memorable 20 November and the texture and substance of both this man and his ship were far from being anything through which you could stick your finger. It was ‘solid’ in the way anything else is solid in our three-dimension world.”
In other words, Adamski was not discounting the possibility of an etheric encounter. And many contactees who have actually traveled to Venus and other planets existing on an etheric level have stated that had it not been for the extraterrestrials informing them that they had stepped out onto a higher dimensional plane, they would have just assumed they had never left the Earth as a realm of physicality.
A brief synopsis of “Life on Planet Venus,” taken from the archives of previously unpublished George Adamski writings, appeared in the December 1975 Cosmic Bulletin of the George Adamski Foundation in Vista, California, ten years after that famous contactee’s death. In this article, Adamski writes that, “It may be surprising to some people to learn that life on other planets of our solar system is quite similar to ours on Earth. Those who have shown an interest in the interplanetary travelers have been prone to believe that they are superior beings, comparable to angels. But in reality, they are human beings, not too different from ourselves. Their customs vary, as do those practiced in many nations of this planet….” He then goes on to describe the advanced Venusian science, that gives them a greater technological edge over us Earthlings.
Riley Crabb reconciles Adamski’s description of a physical realm on Venus with his analysis of our sister planet as existing in a Fourth Dimension, a realm that still retains physicality but maintains the power to transcend the forces of space and time at will.
Riley Crabb’s “4-D Explanation”
Both Riley Crabb and N. Meade Layne put a lot of research and thought into Venus existing in the Fourth Dimension and the UFOs which materialize from space having their point of origin on our sister planet. Riley noted that, “Flying saucers emerge onto our plane of perception from a different space frame. This is done by a conversion of energy…. Or let us say that the UFO moves into our perception by a change of vibration, as was demonstrated to scientists at Muroc (later renamed Edwards Air Force Base) in 1954. This physical phenomenon has been observed and reported by others who were not sworn to secrecy.”
Crabb believed that matter, as constituted in a denser form in our material universe, could not stand the temperatures and strains found in the higher dimensions. Crabb noted that, “As it is now, when our fastest jets get above 2,000 miles per hour, the skin of the plane heats up to over 600 degrees Fahrenheit. But flying saucers have been tracked at speeds of six and seven thousand miles per hour on radar.”
Flying saucers become visible, and hence tangible to us, at the point of energy conversion. Crabb believes that the metals that compose these saucers are etheric. “On its own plane of existence,” surmised Crabb, “the saucer is just as hard to beings or Etherians, if you will, of that plane of existence as the physical steel that composes a jet is to us in our reality. The conversion of such an ethereal vehicle would, according to our contemporary knowledge of quantum physics, involve a superimposition of particles being bilocated across trans-dimensional points along the “superspectrum,” a name that esotericist John A. Keel devised to explain the Omniverse. When such a saucer materializes in our physical reality, it undoubtedly dematerializes at its point of origin; and when it dematerializes from our own sight in the physical world, it is rematerializing in the Etheric world from whence it came. In other words, the ship hasn’t left the points in time and space which it occupies, but its molecular structure is temporarily shifting frequencies and, in the process, assuming a cloak of visibility/invisibility, depending on which vibratory level it is coming from and going to.
One can say that there is a spectrum of tangibility, just as there exists a spectrum for light or sound. This is the adjustment that our scientists, and eventually the general population, will have to make insofar as our understanding of ethereal phenomena. For the ultra-dimensionals that inhabit and thrive in these lighter densities, Riley Crabb concluded that, “Any mental form can be brought into physical existence.” And he further declared that, “This is done by mental action and controlled by mental action. Nothing to Laugh About
Riley Crabb did provide these salient words of caution to the plethora of skeptics out there: “Before you laugh at all this, remember that you have made your own body with your mind. If you don’t like what you see when you look in the mirror, don’t blame anyone but yourself. What you were yesterday in thought and feeling, you are in today’s action. This is true of the Etherian in his own world. He makes his own body with his mind; but much more easily and quickly, and beautifully! He can also produce a cube, a sphere or a flying saucer.”

Late Night Angry Roar Terrorizes Indiana County, Pennsylvania Family
The late night angry roar and damaged screen door generated by a cryptid beast disturbs a rural family in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Without saying, they knew what it was.
The following account was in response to an earlier post:
"This incident occurred during the summer of 1983 as I was about to begin my senior year in high school. My family lived in rural Pennsylvania, in northern Indiana County. Our farmhouse was built in the mid-1800s. In the early 1900’s an addition was added to the back that more than doubled the size of the original house. The original house was a 4 square house, so-called for the 4 square rooms, two on the first floor and two on the second floor, with a stair case in the back. The house as a whole was sturdy, albeit a bit cranky. Every night in summer I fell asleep listening to the pops, cracks, creaking, and groans as the house cooled off in the night air.
The house was built on high ground, next to the mouth of an ancient ravine that ran for over a mile, deeper and darker and rockier as it went down, down to the north branch of the Little Mahoning Creek. The ravine was heavily wooded at the beginning, then the trees sparsened to a few old ones tenaciously rooted into the eroded rocks and glacial till. It was dark and cool and damp down in there, even on the hottest summer day and I spent many summer days down in those woods. I knew the plants, the trees, the birds, and the deer. I heard much I couldn’t see, like the rabbits running through the brush and the squirrels high up scolding me as I walked. I could sense the ones that hid and made no noise: the bobcats lurking and the nocturnal critters in peeking at my back after I passed their burrows.
Sometimes sudden waves of total silence would descend on the woods. The air would be still. The birds would silence themselves. I taught myself to stop at these moments and to observe. I knew it wasn’t me that made the animals go silent, so I figured something, a bobcat perhaps, was close by. I never saw what it was that caused the silences, but I loved to imagine myself as a skilled tracker. Nothing of the sort of course, but I will claim to know those woods. I also had a bosom friend and companion as the roamed the woods and ravines around my home; a big male German Sheppard named Chap. Chap loved to run and roam and chase groundhogs. We prowled along through the woods for years.
This particular night I awoke suddenly, very awake and alert. The wind was blowing against the open window. Our room had the crank-out windows that were popular in the 70s, when the house had been remodeled. The bottom of the window tilted out and the rain ran off. There was a low rumble off in the distance, the thunder of a summer storm blowing in from the west.
I was laying on my belly, my face on its left side on my pillow and my arms around and under my pillow. I listened to the rain. It was not unusual for me to wake up in the middle of the night. It’s been a regular occurrence in my life since I was very young. By that point, at 17 years old, I was used to my 3:00 AM ritual, though still very irritated by it. Across the room, I could hear my brother breathing. I could hear our dog, lying on the foot on my brother’s bed, sniffing at the rainy night air blowing in the window. Across the hall from our room, I could hear my dad’s low steady rumbling snore.
Then I heard something that made my eyes fly open in the pitch black room. From down in the ravine, off in the distance I heard an animal call unlike any I had ever heard. It was a roar, an angry roar. To the best of my knowledge, the apex predator in those woods was the bobcat. This was too deep, too throaty, for a bobcat.
Then I heard it again. Surprisingly closer. A lot closer. I listened for my brother’s breathing. Silence. He was awake.
“What is that?” I loudly whispered.
“I don’t know!” he whispered back. There was obvious concern in his voice.
Then we heard it again. It had to be no more than 75 feet from the house, down at the corner of the yard where the trail led into the woods and down to the ravine. First of all, it was no damn bobcat. It was not a dog. Not a coyote. And it was most definitely not a man.
Next to my bed was a softball bat. Still have it, as a matter of fact. That night, all I wanted in the world was to slide my hand out from under my pillowed head and reach down and grab that ball bat. But I couldn’t move. Everyone in the house seemed paralyzed. I kept expecting to hear my dad throw his bedroom door open, but he never made a sound.
Then two things happened, in rapid succession. There was a tremendous crash, like something or someone had ran headlong into the house. Then there was another roaring screaming howl, this time right next to the house. It was an angry roaring shout so loud I felt like it was next to my face. I had never, in all my life, heard an animal make a noise that loud. It was like a V8 engine with straight pipes was running wide open throttle. At the same time, there was a throbbing, a low frequency growl that seemed to make the house vibrate.
All I could do was close my eyes and try to scream, but nothing came out.
I must have passed out. The next thing I know it was morning. The sun was shining. The house was still there. I slept in, which was very unusual in my family. I went downstairs. My dad and brother had already left for the day. My mom stood at the sink, washing dishes. I looked at my mom wide-eyed. Surely she heard what happened. She met my eyes and pointed to the back porch of our house, a small side room that housed the washing machine, dryer, and coat closet. I walked to the back porch to see that the door that led to the outside had been ripped from its hinges and lay flat on the floor of the porch. In the coat closet, with his nose pressed as far back as it could go, laying in a puddle of his own urine, was Chap. He lay there, whimpering, for two days before he finally came out.
I was given the task to fix the door. When it was up and repaired, I went to my mom and basically asked, “Are we going to pretend that nothing happened last night?” My mom sighed with obvious exasperation and said something along the lines of, “Well, what would you like to know? You know what that was. Your dad knows. I know, we all know. Not much to talk about, other than how scary it was, and frankly, I don’t need to talk about that, thank you.” And for my family, that was pretty much the end of it. I brought it up once not long ago. My dad shrugged. “I know as much now as I did that night.”
Me? I drive by there on occasion, when I’m in the area. I stop on the old country road and listen a while. I listen to the wind and the birds. I listen a while, and then I drive on." FP
