A Writer's Heart

Most mornings, you wake up and think about what the day has in store. What you need to cross off your to-do list and how you're going to find the time to do it all. Most mornings, time flies or lumbers by, but you keep on keeping on, putting forth the effort even though you're not sure you're on the right track. (Never stop.)

If you never quit doing what you love, there will be times when the clouds eventually part and the sun beams radiant upon you. Times like today when I checked my Goodreads page to find the best 4Star Review I've ever seen of my book!!! (Boom goes the undead monkey!)

My twenty year odyssey to publication has been long and ardous, oftentimes filled with extreme moments of joy and despair, coupled with becalmed waters. I've wondered if the hours spent writing were worth it, whether I should quit, whether scouring the deck with a good bit of soap would be a better use of my time. Whether or not my stories were worth the telling and counting the endless things I could be achieving were I not sitting at the computer writing. (Brisk winds will come.)

Today, however, I received the BEST boon to my spirits any writer can get. A delightful and stirring review of my book, Duke by Day, Rogue by Night. This review has touched my soul in a way that can never be repaid. Writing is a subjective world to all who read. I realize this and understand that some books aren't good for everyone. But today~ right now~ I'm near tears because a reader took time to tell me my book, my story, my ideas, resonated within them.

No greater gift has ever been made! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, dearest reader!!!

And to those of you who read, write reviews. Tell your favorite authors you enjoy their stories. I can now honestly say, there is no greater gift for a writer than to know he/she has stirred emotions within a reader's heart. And I now know that everything I've experienced to this point, every dream I had of gifting precious moments of time to a reader's life has come to pass.

Blessings to you all as you prepare for the holiday season. May you be warm and comforted. And may you find that great book that stirs your heart.

Duke by Day, Rogue by Night Excerpt

It's Giving Tuesday! I'm celebrating a wonderful compliment today. I was told my writing style reminded a reader of Georgette Heyer. Can it get any better than that? So while I do a moon walk, I thought I'd share an excerpt from Duke by Day, Rogue by Night. Enjoy! ;)

“Where are my clothes?”

“You’ll not be needing them,” he said.

She struggled to breathe. “What do you mean I’ll not be needing my clothes?”

Even before the question came out of her mouth, his meaning was clear. An abysmal vulnerability unlike any she’d ever experienced forced a heated blush into her cheeks. He stepped closer, looming above her like a hawk stalking prey. She shrank back, scurrying on her hands and feet until her back braced against the wall, intent on putting as much space between herself and the deplorable scoundrel as possible.

“Nothing can come between us, Constance, including clothes.”

His alarming grin proved he meant to ensure every word. Beads of sweat broke out on her brow as her mind labored for a response. Something wicked churned in her stomach as her mind labored over a memory, the sensation of the two of them without clothes, their bodies scandalously intertwined, his warm fingers, comforting touch, and his heart pounding underneath her ear.

“How do you know my name?” she squeaked, trying desperately to block out the condemning images.

“Did you honestly expect me to believe your lies about being Admiral Duncan’s daughter? The man died quite seasoned. His daughters most assuredly wed and bedded before you were born.” His penetrating gaze darted over her body. “How old are you?” he asked. “I wager nineteen — at most.”

He moved closer, his knee resting on the edge of the bunk. Reaching out to grab a lock of her hair, he added, “Too young to be Duncan’s daughter,” he continued, “and far prettier.”

Unsettled, she snatched back her hair. Indignantly, she spat, “You irritating simpleton! My age is of no consequence to you.”

“Yet you claim to be one of Admiral Duncan’s daughters. Who is the simpleton?”

“Are you calling me a liar?”

“If I must,” he said with a wave of his hand, acting as if the effort drained him. But it was the look in his eye that warned her not to insult him again.

She quivered. He stood and crossed the room until he was positioned by the door again. He leaned against it and crossed his arms over his chest, once again causing her eyes to feast on his toned, lean body. The black shirt he wore accentuated his weathered skin. His dark hair, mustache, beard, and eye patch emphasized the reticent set of his jaw. His hair flowed loosely about his shoulders. The red scarf around his forehead stood out like the blush of a cardinal attracting a mate. For the first time, she noticed a gold hoop in his left ear as he dropped his head to the side to observe her with disdain.

“Where am I?” Her voice cracked. She hated being vulnerable, hated herself for thinking the man slightly handsome.

His mustached lip curled upward as if he’d been waiting for such a cue. He stepped away from the door.

“You’re aboard the Striker. Don’t you remember?”

She turned away from him and gazed out the spacious window to replay the previous night’s events in her mind. Her heart raced as bone-chilling images proved she had much to be grateful for where he was concerned. She averted his gaze, hoping to hide the fear listing her heart. Indeed, she remembered all too well that pirates had stormed through her cabin door. She recalled the first time she’d set eyes upon him. She remembered Captain Collins and that heartless brigand, Frink, tearing at her clothes. A tear slipped out of the corner of her eye. Light and moist, it tickled her skin, reminding her of being weighted down by water. She remembered nearly drowning. She remembered hearing her mother’s voice. She remembered him.

“I remember … ,” she admitted, “you saved me from drowning.”

“And I brought you to my cabin,” he finished for her.

“Where’s Captain Frink? Is this his ship?”

“Do not worry your pretty little head about him. He’ll do you no more harm.”

“And Mrs. Mortimer?” Fear took hold when he did not answer. She only vaguely remembered her dearest governess being carried out of the cabin. What had happened to her? Had she been passed from one man to the next like a communal jug of rum?

He approached her slowly, sat down on the edge of the bed and leaned closer, making her heart flutter. “Mrs. Mortimer?”

“Yes,” she replied. “My traveling companion. Is she all right? Is she alive?”

“That crafty old witch is fine. She’s in another cabin.” He held up his hand when she began to ask another question. “Rest assured she is well.” He placed his finger on her lips to silence her when she tried to speak.

Constance brushed his finger away. “Why are we separated? Why aren’t you keeping us together?”

“What joy would there be in that for me?”

Good News, Me Hearties!

Woot! While working on The Rogue's Prize, I received an email from my editor, Jennifer Lawler at Crimson Romance. She wanted me to know an opening had come up and she wanted to place Lost Treasure, Captive Princess, my first contemporary romance, into that slot. The book was normally scheduled for July 2013. Of course, I said a resounding "Yes!" As a matter of fact, I'm doing the hempin jig, without the noose around my neck, of course. Heehee! (Pirate!)

But I digress...

Lost Treasure, Captive Princess began as a first chapter I submitted to the HQN Mills & Boon New Voices contest a year ago. I'd never written contemporary romance before. To be honest, I wasn't sure I had one in me. But once I started writing Gian-Paulo Montovanni and Carolina Beugre's story, I couldn't stop. (Must have been the rum...)

Now I will purposefully digress...

Moving wherever the Army sent us, my rogue and I were given a great opportunity to attend the Defensive Language Institute in Monterey, CA. Afterward, we lived in Italy for three years. (We even named our youngest daughter after one of our Italian teachers.) As a result, Italy has been, is, and always will be close to my heart. Why? Not just for the picturesque panorama and great food, but for the Italian people who are intensely passionate about life. I've never met a more courteous and giving people. ;)

Fast forward...

To honor my experiences in Italy, I wrote a story about an Italian prince in search of his mother's emerald necklace, a necklace every royal future bride-to-be has been presented on the last day of Carnivale. But our prince cannot marry and provide an heir because his people do not know the necklace is missing. That knowledge would draw questions about its disappearance. To prevent a scandal, his search for the necklace brings a jeweler from Atlanta to his attention. Carolina Beugre has somehow created a perfect replica. But how? Does this mean she knows where it is? Gian-Paulo's quest for the truth leads to more than any prince bargained for.

Lost Treasure, Captive Princess was written like a HQN Presents. Passion, intrigue, royal alpha, fiesty heroine, masquerade balls, yachts, and magnificent palaces— oh! the passion.

Da da daaaaa!!! Get ready for a March 4, 2013 release date, mi amici!!

Ah, but don't lament. I'm still working on The Rogue's Prize. To allow for the switch it's slotted for May now, instead of March. Che bello!

Ciao!!

December Musings

Aye, me hearties, it's December already! And December proves to promise countless hours of joy, family reunions and life-sharing via Christmas cards, phone calls, and gift-giving. I hope you're getting off to a great start planning your special time together with loved ones!

I'm working hard on a special Christmas gift this year, The Rogue's Prize, which is due to my editor, December 31st. For the first time EVER, I've got limited hours in my day for play and panic is starting to set in. Why? I want Captain Henry Guffald's book to be just as good, if not infinitely better, than Duke by Day, Rogue by Night and I'm currently working harder than ever to improve upon the original. That's a tall order in my mind, because I know a sophomore effort can make or break a series, and DBD,RBN has been a gift to me in so many ways. And so, dear readers, with hopes of publishing Redeeming the Rogue, Lord Garrick Seaton's story, 3rd book in the trilogy, I've got high standards for making Henry's story a gallant success.

The Rogue's Prize promises sword fights, rollicking adventure, passionate interludes, daring rescues... and more. Henry and Adele Seaton can't be any more alike or different, but throw them together and sparks fly. And we all know what sparks can do between a man and a woman, don't we?

My Christmas cards are done and we're getting started on decorating our humble abode. My two sons, one in the Air Force and one in the Army, will be coming home for the holidays and my oldest daughter will be giving birth soon. I have so many things to be thankful for this season and I hope you do too.

Well, I'm off to 1805 and more adventure along the Cornish Coast, me hearties.

Remember the rum!

Katherine

Thanksgiving Blessings!

What a glorious time it is when we get together with those we love. Whether that involves family and/or friends, Thanksgiving is a perfect time to share delicious recipes, one another's company, a bit of football reveree, a few laughs and the bonds of togetherness.

Thanksgiving is an interesting North American tradition. I researched the origins of this holiday and wrote about Squanto in one of my Hidden Treasure, Historical Truth articles. For an indepth look at Thanksgiving, you can read the article here: www.katherinebone.com and http://www.katherinebone.com/content/...

What is your holiday tradition or your favorite Thanksgiving memory?

My favorite memories consist of driving home from one of our many duty stations and spending time with my grandparents. Both my maternal grandparents were educators, University Music Professor and 2nd grade teacher. Both taught me to value wisdom, music, theatre, and literature as the four key elements in creating a satisfying life.

But the one thing my grandparents were well-known for was celebrating the holidays in grand style. Turkey, oyster dressing, individual jelled salads, especially Bing Cherry Salad, various vegetable dishes, delicious homemade rolls and various divine pies were the usual fare. Grandmother's crusts were always light and flaky. Her turkey was never dry. Classical music provided ample atmosphere, creating a sanctuary we never wanted to leave behind. Joyous memories!

Another favorite memory of mine comes from our tour in Italy. Young newlyweds, hubby and I spent our Thanksgiving holidays with Language School friends. Great times, little hastle, providing lasting joy that I will always hold dear to my heart. ;)

As you celebrate Thanksgiving in your special way, I wish for you another spectacular memory to add to those you hold dear in your heart.

Blessings,

Katherine

Lessons Learned

Time has a way of getting away from me. While I've been trying to promote Duke by Day, Rogue by Night, and learn to balance promotion, blogging, giveaways, and guest appearances (like the one I attended at the Southern Magic Readers' Luncheon in Birmingham, AL), I'm also dealing with family life and work issues. Sometimes, the whole process is simply exhausting. But don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. I'm just trying to be the best at everything I do. Why? You guessed it. I'm one of those perfectionist personalities. And boy, does that ever lead me to the end of a plank sometimes. ;)

I've discovered that a debut book takes a lot of energy because the only way to get recognized is to put your name and face out there as much as possible. It's all about name recognition, which is why I chose stress bones as my go-to promo item. With a name like Bone, you can't go wrong with this idea. LOL! (Hey, go with it. Pirate!)

So my quest is to figure out how to balance family, work, and writing in a way I can satisfy the loved ones in my life, and my readers, while finishing the next book and the next book. The Rogue's Prize is due by the end of the year, which means I've got to haul 'lots of pirate treasure' to the cave. Then I begin work on the 3rd book in the series, Redeeming the Rogue, which I hope will reach readers by next October. I've got a full plate, especially with the addition of my first contemporary Lost Treasure, Captive Princess, coming out in July 2013. Not to mention another grandchild due at the beginning of the year (#3). Don't you just love it? <3

Life is crazy wild and I'm eager to face the challenges coming my way. Why? Because they are all awesomeness! I'm alive and breathing. I'm healthy and I've got people around me who love me! I've spent years and years dreaming of the day my stories would reach you, dear reader. And as my dreams are finally coming true, I want to be the best at what I do, no matter what that is. Perfectionist personality? I claim it! But know it's all for you and the stories I hope will bring moments of joy into your lives.

For your pleasure, I give you the link to my very first book trailer. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. (Shiver me timbers, I get goosebumps every time I see it!)

Well, I'm off to claim my lot in life. It be filled with mischievous adventure, me hearties. Wishing you all safe and calm waters!

Blessings,

Rolling in Second

I found out the most wonderful thing yesterday, my friends. Duke by Day, Rogue by Night has a 2nd place ranking at Crimson Romance!!! Let me tell you, that's a marvelous boon to my spirits and great way to start off the week! <3

Thank you to everyone who has bought my book and/or plans to read it. I cherish each and every one of you. You see, writing a story isn't about fulfilling a lifelong dream of being a storyteller or becoming rich and famous. It's about touching other people's lives with a hint of something that brings a familiar excitement, comfort and peace to those who read the book. I was touched like this growing up and have been every time I open a book and get whisked away to another time and place via an author's beautiful prose.

Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Rosemary Rogers, Fern Michaels started me off on this path. (There's nothing like weaning on the best!) And there's nothing better than two people falling in love, overcoming challenges, risking danger and crossing the threshold into an adventure we all can only imagine in our minds, but desire to experience. (It's safer that way, isn't it?) Add on an HEA, the happily ever afters we all crave and love and life is SWEET!

Romance novels are definitely here to stay, especially historical romance and in particular, the Regency genre. And thank goodness for the alpha males who'll do anything and everything to win their lady loves!!! Ah, yes. What a joy reading can be!

As I write book two in the Nelson's Tea series, I think of you, dear readers. This is for you!

Blessings!

Duke by Day, Rogue by Night is Here!!

Happy Halloween everybody!

Who doesn't love an alpha male, especially if he's dressed as a pirate? An aristocrat portraying himself as a fop to keep his enemies and the ton at bay? Or men willing to forsake their place in society as first sons in order to serve England without falling under suspicion? Most anyone would find a rogue like this wildly exciting. But not Lady Constance Danbury. Her previous experience with pirates left her motherless and fearful of the sea. But when her father's reputation is practically in tatters and he must wed her to a lecherous lord with a penchant for abuse in order to replenish his coffers, Constance boards a ship bound for Spain in order to escape and plead for her aunt's help. What happens on that ship catapaults Constance into a den of intrigue and danger. It also brings her face to face with a man who cannot compete with her wildest imaginings— a duke by day, rogue by night.

While you masquerade in costume today, I hope you'll give the first book in my Nelson's Tea trilogy a try. It debuted two days ago and I'm still over the moon.

Enjoy the adventure, but don't forget to love a rogue.

Social Media

Thank you for sharing my journey into publication with me. It's an unbelievable thrill knowing my first book is finally going to reach readers in just 16 days! (Man the cannons! Prepare for a broadside!) I'm saluting the nudge by my muse which became the Nelson's Tea Series. Duke By Day, Rogue By Night, is the first book in the trilogy.

While I'm anticipating my book launch October 29th, and a fabulous partay aboard ship, the whole process of becoming a published author has, at times, been overwhelming. Why? Authors, especially new authors, struggle to get the word out about their books in the current publishing market. In the old days, authors could rely upon publishing houses for promotions and giveaways, and book signings at local book stores to drum up interest. With the dawn of Ebook publishing however, much of this responsibility has now fallen upon authors. That can be good or bad, depending upon the amount of time an author chooses to spend delving into social media.

"Put down the cutlass, all is not lost!"

Have no fear. To the rescue great online opportunities have risen to take the place of tried and true book tours, enabling authors to still have that logistic passage over the horizon into reader's hands. Though traditional routes have changed, (Hoist the colors!) we live in fabulous times. There's no need to wait years for sequels to books, for book tours, or chances to meet an author. The Internet has radically changed lives for the better. Though it isn't the mid-1700's, it is the Golden Age of Literacy with so many wonderful choices at hand.

So how does a new author create buzz for his/her very first book? By increasing a social media presence through great venues like publisher websites, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Blogs without sacrificing writing time. It's a hard balance, one in which I'm still trying to gain finesse. But because of you, dear reader, I know the effort will be so well worth my time.

I'll be posting my blog tour here soon. In the meantime, you can find me on www.okaylistenhere.blogspot.com, www.crimsonromance.com/, www.teatimeromance.wordpress.com, Facebook and Twitter at @katherinelbone. I'm off to chart a course toward that horizon. Until I weigh anchor again, I wish you blessings!

My Book Cover is Live!

My author page and book are live on Amazon and my book is available for pre-order! Today, my book cover appeared on Goodreads! And so a writing journey begins, though this isn't really the beginning. In fact, it's just a stepping stone to another rung in the ladder. But this blog post signifies a very important first in my life and I'm so glad I can share this moment with you.

My journey actually began twenty years ago with the purchase of my very first computer. I'd always written poetry, but sitting in front of a computer filled me with the desire to actually write that book I'd always wanted to write. I spent years researching historical material. Years trying to get the writing 'right', while raising four children. And though my writing came in spurts back then, I never stopped feeding the dream of seeing my books published.

"Never, never, never, never, never give up!" Winston Churchill's quote has become my motto. (I actually wear a bracelet with this quote on it every day.)

Life is a cycle of change. When my children were nearly all grown, I began to focus more seriously on this dream of mine. I joined RWA and then one year later my local writing chapter. At that point, amazing possibilities opened. Online classes, workshops, conferences all helped sculpt my writing style. The connections I made with friends and acquaintances inside the industry forever changed my life. I owe a great debt of gratitude to everyone I've come into contact with. Because experiences, acquaintances and friends are what mold and shape destinies.

Snippets of conversation, books and movies, sparks of inspiration, if fed and nurtured eventually become marvelous realities.

In my research, I discovered Admiral Nelson was never without his tea. I was fascinated by this and took it a bit further. What if Nelson had a group of mercenaries, first sons from every tier of life, above reproach, able to move in and out of society without suspicion, aptly named Nelson's Tea. No one would understand the reference, except those within Nelson's circle. And the Nelson's Tea Trilogy was born.

The first book in the series, Duke By Day, Rogue By Night follows Percival Avery, Marques Stanton. Deep undercover, he's forced to save Lady Constance Danbury's life, jeopardizing all hope of ever locating his sister's killers and bringing them to justice.

Decisions we make are what sculpt us. I'm delighted to be able to share my first book, Duke By Day, Rogue By Night, with you, dear reader. And I hope you enjoy the adventurous, swashbuckling ride!
