Non-Political

Q:  Any non-political thoughts for today?
-Chase, Indianapolis

DoA:  Sure.   "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." -Jeremiah 29:11...or..."Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." -Matthew 11:28-29

Have a good day!

Team building

Q:  Do
Trump and the press need to start doing team building activities?
-Ben, Ann Arbor

DoA:  Ha!  I'm not sure I want them on the same team, but it would be awesome if he greeted each reporter at the next press conference like this.

The Trump Divide

Q: I saw a new poll that has Trump's first month approval ratings among Republicans at 87% and a measly 10% among Democrats.  What should he do to bridge this divide?
-Karen, San Diego

DoA:  That number is fascinating when you consider all of Trump's liberal positions.  He wants trade policies similar to Bernie.  He wants an infrastructure stimulus that's bigger than Obama's.  He thinks healthcare and education are two of the federal government's three most important functions.  And he wants to protect the LGBTQ community more than any new president in history.  I don't know.  Release his tax returns, cave in on the travel freeze and fire some more people?

What do you think Trump should do to bridge the divide?

Valentine's Day Shame

Q: I just read that 85% of Valentine's Day cards are bought by women and that 14% of women actually send themselves flowers.  Pretty disgraceful.  What do American men have to say for themselves?
-Holly, Los Angeles

DoA:  Ummm...Sorry?  This Kevin James stand-up bit about cards will make you feel better.  It's pretty funny.  (It might contain a couple swear words, though.)  Happy Valentine's Day!

Politics and the Grammys

Q: What did you think about all of the politics and the Grammys?
-Don, Carson City

DoA:  First Amendment.  That's what makes America the best country in the world!  (Their self-righteousness does lose some of its punch, though, since I have to wait for most of their songs to be remade by KidzBop before I can listen to them in school or with my family.)  A lot of talent on that stage last night, though.  A lot of talent.

What was your favorite part of the Grammys?

Best SNL Impression of All Time

Q:  Is Melissa McCarthy's Sean Spicer the best SNL political impression ever?
-Dana, Newark

DoA: It's pretty good.  Maybe top five.  I'm still going with 1) Ferrell's George W., 2) Fey's Palin, and 3) McKinnon's Hillary.  (One unrelated thing that really bothered me about the skit last night was seemingly making a joke out of Chicago's murder rate.  I thought this was a good site.)

Who are some of your favorite SNL impressions?

Is Public Education Ruined?

Q:  Senate Democrats protested all night to block DeVos's confirmation.  The president of the AFT called her appointment "a sad day for children." And now, protesters won't even let her in a school.  Is public education officially ruined?
-Tania, Studio City

DoA:  I understand that people are concerned dollars will be taken away from their schools, and I can appreciate that.  But like I've been saying since November 8th, let's just see how things play out.  If you are fighting for the status quo, this is what you are fighting for:  45 percent of people who spend at least half their childhood in poverty will still live in poverty at age 35; children in high-poverty school districts score four grades below peers in the wealthiest districts;  and a child born in the bottom-income quartile has a 9% chance of completing college by age 24 (Scientific American Mind). Nine percent!  I'm not sure that's worth losing our minds to defend.

KellyANNE QVC

Q: I think the administration reached a new low today, hawking products on Fox News.  Should Conway be fired?
-Robert, Peoria

DoA:  She's been disciplined.  I really don't see any difference between Conway encouraging people to buy Ivanka's stuff and Michelle Obama promoting her book a few years ago.  (I don't really have a problem with either, but y'all are welcome to explain it to me.)

If you were counselor to the president and could do it without America going bananas, what product would you promote?

Jack is Back

Q: Just heard Jack Nicholson is going to be in his first movie since 2010.  Who are your all-time favorite Jacks?
-Gunner, Santa Monica

DoA: 1. Jackie Robinson 2. Jack McBrayer 3. Jack Nicklaus.

Who is your favorite Jack?

Silencing People

Q: How scary is it that we live in a world where Elizabeth Warren can't read a letter by Coretta Scott King?
-Abbie, New Haven

DoA:  Scary.  But it's encouraging that every single time people try to silence someone recently they give that someone a bigger platform and audience (except for in Dakota...).  Keep it up, America!
