Addressing Stress and Emotions in IBS – Empowering Yourself in Healing
Life with IBS is not easy, and it makes sense if you feel overwhelmed by it all at times. Plus, life outside of IBS has so many stressors of its own.
Unfortunately, research shows us that stress can contribute to IBS symptoms. So a vicious cycle can occur with stress worsening symptoms, symptoms worsening stress, and so on.
But there’s good news! Relief from IBS is possible – especially when you address the role stress and difficult emotions may be playing in your condition.
IBS: A Stressful Condition That Takes an Emotional Toll
IBS is a very challenging condition that can affect all aspects of your life. It often limits daily functioning and productivity, affects relationships, and gets in the way of important activities like work, school, and home life.[1-3]
In addition to painful and uncomfortable symptoms, people with IBS also often experience fear and anxiety related to their symptoms, possible triggers, and flare-ups. They commonly avoid certain places and situations out of worry about what might happen.[1,4]
And on top of all of that, IBS sufferers also face a lack of understanding about their condition. Loved ones, strangers, colleagues, and doctors often do not understand and even dismiss their concerns. The stigma surrounding IBS can lead to shame, embarrassment, and self-judgment.[5]
If you have IBS, it’s no wonder that you might often feel stressed, worried, anxious, fearful, angry, lonely, and a wide range of other emotions. It can be very stressful to live with this condition, and it can take a major emotional toll.[4]
But here’s what is important to realize: stress and difficult emotions appear to have the power to trigger and worsen IBS symptoms.[6]
Research Suggests a Strong Link Between IBS, Stress, and Emotions
There is an abundance of research connecting stress and emotions to IBS.[2,6,7,8]
Here are a few findings from the research that help to illustrate the links between IBS stress, emotions, and mental health:
About 40-70% of people with IBS also have a mental health condition like anxiety or depression.[2,9]More than half of IBS patients develop IBS symptoms during or after a stressful life event.[6,9]Early life stress is very common in people with IBS; abuse, trauma, adversity, family dysfunction, and more are highly reported.[6,7,9]People with IBS often report higher levels of life stress, relationship conflicts, and emotional suppression.[7]When people with IBS experience stress and emotional arousal from things like anger, anxiety, or depression, symptoms tend to be more severe and more noticeable.[6,9,10]People with IBS are more likely to believe emotions are not acceptable than the average person.[8]As you can see, there are many lines of evidence connecting IBS to stress and emotions.
As some researchers put it, “psychosocial factors contribute to the predisposition, precipitation, and perpetuation of IBS symptoms.”[9] John Hopkins Medicine goes so far as to say:
“It is clear that stress plays a role in the frequency and severity of symptoms of patients with IBS.” [6]
You might be wondering, “But what does stress have to do with the digestive system? Isn’t IBS a condition of the gut, not the mind?”
To understand why stress and emotions can have such a big impact on IBS, we’ll need to look at something called the gut-brain axis.
Understanding the Gut-Brain Axis
Did you know that our guts and our brains are tightly connected? In human biology, there is something called the “gut-brain axis,” which links our brains to our digestive tract through hormonal and neural signaling.
This means that our guts and our brains are constantly talking to each other and communicating. The state our brain is in can affect our gut, and vice versa.
When we experience stress and strong emotional arousal, it creates changes in our nervous system that can have far-reaching effects throughout the entire body. And because the nervous system is linked to the gut through the gut-brain axis, changes in the brain can create changes in the gut.
Studies show us that stress causes real, physical changes in the digestive system that can impair its normal functioning and lead to pain and other gastrointestinal symptoms. For example, stress can lead to changing hormone levels, increased intestinal permeability, and altered motility in the gut (all factors that are known to be a part of the IBS dysfunction).[2,6,9]
When we are under stress or are experiencing strong emotions, it can trigger or worsen digestive symptoms like those you have with IBS.[2,6,9]
Because of the role of the gut-brain axis and the ways in which psychological factors can influence the condition, some researchers even believe that irritable bowel syndrome should also be known as “irritable brain.”[9]
Getting Stuck in a Vicious Cycle
The relationship between stress and symptoms isn’t just one-directional. As we covered earlier, IBS can cause a lot of stress itself.
Unfortunately, this can create a vicious loop that many IBS sufferers find themselves stuck in – with symptoms leading to stress, that stress worsening symptoms, and so on.[2,4,6,7,8]
Each perpetuates the other, and your symptoms, stress, and other difficult emotions can get more and more amplified as the cycle goes along.
This Doesn’t Mean It’s All in Your HeadAs we have seen, research suggests strong connections between IBS and stress, emotions, and psychological factors. But it is important to clarify that that does not mean it is all in your head.
The pain and digestive symptoms you are experiencing are very real. No one is assuming you are making them up. They are not your fault, and you have done nothing wrong. IBS is a real condition with real physical symptoms.
So no, it’s not all in the head. But at the same time, addressing your emotions and your stress can be a key part of managing this condition.[4]
The Powerful Healing Effects of Addressing Your Stress and Emotions
So now we know that stress and strong emotions can contribute to IBS symptoms. And here’s the exciting part…
There is an abundance of research showing that techniques that help you to better manage, express, and release stress and difficult emotions can help you to improve IBS symptoms and boost your quality of life.[2,7,11,12]
For example, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), is a common technique that is used in IBS treatment that can help people with IBS to cope with stress, reframe unhelpful beliefs, manage their emotions, and so on. It has been shown time and time again in numerous studies to help decrease nervous system arousal, improve IBS symptoms, reduce disability caused by IBS, and improve quality of life.[2,11,12,13]
You see, people with IBS who learn skills to manage their emotions and lower their stress can experience amazing breakthroughs.
This information helps us to understand that we have tools within us to support our bodies in the healing process; if we address our stress and emotions, we can actually empower ourselves to feel better.
Remission Is Possible! If this is all sounding too good to be true… we get it. When you are in the depths of IBS symptoms, it might seem like there is no way out. It can begin to feel hopeless, like healing is impossible and not an option for you.
And while there may be no specific cure-all for IBS that will work for everyone, there is one thing we know to be true: remission is definitely possible. Research data tells us that many people with IBS report reduction of symptoms, and even complete remission.[14-17]
So if you have IBS, you need to know that it is possible to heal and get better. You can find relief from your symptoms, just as so many others like you have experienced. So don’t give up!
Harnessing the Power of Tapping to Support Your IBS Healing
The research makes it quite clear that stress and emotions can affect IBS, and also that addressing your stress and emotions can help you to feel better.
Luckily, there is a wide range of healing modalities that can support you in this journey. And one simple, effective technique you can add to your toolbox is Tapping.
Tapping helps us to send calming signals to the brain. It can help to turn off the stress response in the brain that gets activated when we are anxious, overwhelmed, in pain, or facing challenges.[18-20]
If we can learn to help our brain calm down, release stress, and let go of difficult or pent-up emotions, we can help it to relax.
And as a result, we can help to turn down the signals that contribute to troublesome symptoms in our digestion. And that’s what Tapping can help with. If you are interested in learning more about the science and research behind Tapping, go here.
Of course, everyone is unique, and each person’s condition and situation is different. So no promises can be made about how Tapping will work for you. But we can tell you that Tapping has helped many different people to find relief from a variety of concerns like IBS. It has helped others to transform their lives and break free of symptoms like pain, digestive issues, and so much more.
If others can find relief, why can’t you?
We’ve designed a 5-day Tapping Meditation series in The Tapping Solution App to help you utilize the power of Tapping to support your IBS. Here’s what you can expect to find (as well as 6 bonus topics!):

Day 4: Exploring the Onset of Your Symptoms
Reflect back on the time when your symptoms began. Explore what was going on in your life before your IBS started to acknowledge any stressors or emotional upheaval that may have played a role in the onset of your symptoms.
Day 5: Imagining Healing and Freedom from IBS

Take some time to address any stress or anxiety you may have over managing your IBS during an upcoming event – whether that is a party, a family meal, a vacation, an errand, a dinner out on a date, or a happy hour with colleagues. Help yourself feel more comfortable, relaxed, and confident when it comes time for the event.
Bonus #6 – Sleep Programming for IBS Support
Relax your body, prepare it for sleep, and then program it with the objective of boosting your healing to help you find relief from IBS.
You deserve to feel well, and to be able to participate in a life that is rich, meaningful, and full. Fortunately, remission from IBS is possible. The more you are able to release your stress and other difficult emotions, the better your chances at finding relief.
Remember, reducing your stress allows your brain and body to relax. It brings you to a place that you can begin to heal and get well. With the power of Tapping, you can support your brain and body to do just that – to let go, to calm down, and to settle into a state of deep healing.

Tapping for Autoimmune Relief – A Video Story
Our emotions and our physical body are intimately connected.
I think that’s something we as humans have known for a long time, yet never really had the tools to properly address. Or maybe we just forgot…
With the rise of modern medicine, which has revolutionized how we are able to treat the body with fantastic cures to a wide variety of illnesses, it almost seems like the balance has completely shifted in that direction, neglecting the emotional component.
Thus, giving rise to more of a symptom management approach to health, instead of actually addressing the underlying causes – mainly stress.
Here’s an amazing quick story from Charlie that I want to share as a perfect example of how Tapping can be used to support the health of the body by working with our emotions.

How to Calm Your Fears with EFT Tapping
What is it that you’re afraid of? Is it something “real” or is it just imaginary? Interesting question, right?
Fear is an emotion that we as humans most likely would not have survived through our stages of evolution without. In its base form, fear simply alerts us of danger so that we can quickly remove ourselves from the threat. In other words, it’s a survival instinct, one that can be observed in just about every living thing.
So then, how do those other fears, like a dental visit, public speaking, or even going on a first date play into things? These, and many others, are referred to as “learned fears,” or fears that have been conditioned into our minds and imagination, usually by a past negative experience.
These kinds of fears aren’t founded in our present reality and usually have no actual danger related to them, but they can limit us from living a fulfilling life all the same.
“Fears are educated into us, and can, if we wish, be educated out.”
– Karl Augustus Menninger
One of the core ways in which Tapping can help with relieving these learned fears is how it “re-educates” our nervous system to properly differentiate what is a real threat from what is imagined. And by calming the programmed emotional reaction, we are able to be more present, aware, and calm.
What Does the Research Behind Tapping Say?
Tapping has been used in numerous studies on acute fears and phobias with proven positive results.
From fear of the dentist, to public speaking, to test-taking anxiety, and even childbirth, Tapping has consistently helped people overcome their fears with sustained results over time!
Just check out our page on the Science and Research behind Tapping, then download and explore this Science, Data & Research Kit, our free PDF which outlines over 40 research studies proving the effectiveness of Tapping.
And these don’t even include the countless case studies and personal testimonials of people overcoming their fears of flying, driving, heights, and so many others!
While it’s been scientifically proven that Tapping can help with phobias, this technique is also profoundly helpful at shifting internal beliefs that are fear-based, like the fear of failure, the fear of loss, and the fear of not being good enough.
These are not actual tangible fears, like the fear of water or snakes, but because Tapping helps to soothe the nervous system and to rewire the brain (and therefore, the associations we have) it encourages a sense of safety and trust in every aspect of our lives using the same mechanisms that dissolve phobias.
Can Tapping Help Me With My Fear?
So often, I hear, “But my case is different. Can Tapping help ME with [fill in the blank].” Lol! I know it seems rather scripted to simply reply “Of course!” without even knowing the exact issue. But that’s because the fundamental underpinnings behind a fear or phobia are essentially the same, and so is how Tapping is used for releasing those fears.
Certainly, situations are different and everyone has their own personal story behind why they may be afraid of something, and I don’t wish to make light of that, because some of these fears can indeed be crippling or debilitating.
However, I can say for sure that Tapping works.
Our “Releasing Fear” tapping meditation in The Tapping Solution App has been played over 52,000 times (as of this writing) with a self-reported reduction in emotional intensity by an average of 41%. That means people feel 41% better and less fearful in less than 9 minutes of Tapping!
And if numbers don’t speak to you, listen to what some of our users have shared after tapping with this meditation:
“This really helped me see that the fear is only making things worse. thank you!!!!”
“Excellent meditation! Helped me discover a repressed traumatic memory that was causing me fear! Now I can heal and release the fear! Thank you so much!”
“Some of the language Jessica used was dead-on to the feelings fear leaves me with. It is very comforting to be understood. So far, this is a favorite. Ty!”
“I have carried Fear around for 70+ years, clueless. In one tapping session, I have recognized a great deal of it and let it go. Amazing. thank you all for the support and the tools. I’ll continue this journey with a smile. Thank you!!”
Here’s a Round of Tapping to Get You StartedLet’s do a few minutes of tapping to get an idea of how to work with releasing fears. If you’re new to Tapping, you can read more about it here.
Side of Hand: Even though I have this fear, I accept myself and how I feel
Side of Hand: Even though I feel this fear in my body, I accept how I feel and I allow my body to relax
Side of Hand: Even though I’ve been carrying this feeling of fear, I accept myself and I am open to seeing things in a new way
Then begin tapping through the meridian points…
Eyebrow: This fear
Side of Eye: I feel it in my body
Under Eye: It leaves me feeling frozen
Under Nose: I’m scared of something going wrong
Under Mouth: So I just try to avoid it
Collarbone: I recognize all this fear
Under Arm: And how it shows up in my life
Top of Head: I recognize the part of me that holds onto fear
And continue through the points.
The important thing to remember is to be gentle with yourself through the process.
Tapping is not another form of exposure therapy, where you’re thrown face to face with your fear until you get over it. Tapping is rather a gradual “step-and-release” technique.
Yes, you acknowledge the fear. That is the first step. But then you mentally take a step closer to it, and as the anxiety increases, you tap it down. Then another step, then tap that down, and so on.
While a fear or phobia seems like one giant ball of anxiety all wrapped together, it’s really a series of invisible barriers or layers. You can tap through one layer at a time, beginning with the easiest ones to face on the surface level, and then addressing all of the different facets of the fear as you progress.
Eventually, the fear just collapses like a house of cards because you’ve simply released all of the emotional charges that were supporting it.
For more Tapping on fears and phobias, I invite you to download our Tapping Solution App, where we have full meditations and even whole series for eliminating specific fears and phobias.
Until next time…

Your 3-Step Tapping Guide to Releasing Resentment
– Shannon Alder
I don’t think there’s anyone who hasn’t felt hurt by the actions or words of someone else, the effect of which resulting in a variety of emotions such as anger, disappointment, rejection, and resentment, just to name a few.
That’s pretty much common knowledge, right? It’s something that we’ve all experienced, so we can relate. Of all of these emotions, however, it’s resentment that has the potential of being the most toxic.
“Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.”
– Saint Augustine
You see, as opposed to anger, which is the more acute, aggressive form, usually fizzling itself out over a relatively short period…
Resentment is the smoldering slow burn – the chronic caustic acid that slowly eats away at us from the inside out, affecting not only our relationships, but also our health.
The problem with resentment is that we can often rationally justify holding on to it. Perhaps someone did say or do something to cause us pain or injury, either physically or emotionally. And because of this, they “deserve” our animosity and resentfulness as a form of “payback” to even the scales, as it were.
But as the Buddha once wisely said, “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”
So if you feel it’s time to let go of your anger and resentment, here are three simple steps you can follow:
1. IDENTIFY THE REAL EMOTIONS
Many times when we’re holding onto resentment, we’re actually just holding on to the memory of how someone made us feel.
In other words, we’re not really holding onto resentment, we’re remembering how we felt unwanted, or unloved, or unworthy, or less-than in any way.
Take your time here and really dig deep to identify who it is your resent, and why exactly you resent them (i.e. how they made you feel).
This may be a little tough, but it’s an important step. And you may actually find that you’ve never really thought about it before. Some insights may suddenly present themselves that you’ve never noticed previously.
It’s important to articulate and capture these emotions and memories because it will prepare you for the next step…
2. TAP ON IT
Tapping is such an effective technique when it comes to releasing resentment because it engages so many aspects of the mind, body, and emotional system. If you’re new to Tapping, you can read more about it here.
Resentment is a very visceral emotion of itself. Like anger, you feel it throughout every part of your body and it can literally change your biochemistry.
“There is an enormous physical burden to being hurt and disappointed,” says Karen Swartz, M.D., director of the Mood Disorders Adult Consultation Clinic at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
So taking the more specific emotions and memories of how someone made you feel from Step 1, you’re now ready to begin tapping on them.
Here some example setup statements to help get you started:
Side of Hand: Even though [person’s name] made me feel so small and insignificant, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.
Side of Hand: Even though dad/mom never made me feel like I was important in their lives, I accept myself and how I feel.
Side of Hand: Even though [person’s name] made me feel rejected and unwanted, I choose now to let this resentment go.
Then begin tapping through the meridian points, elaborating on the “truth” about how this person made you feel.
I use the word “truth” in quotes for two reasons. Firstly, because some find it difficult to tap on the negative feelings because they feel like they are just reinforcing them. But really the opposite is true…
By acknowledging your true feelings while tapping through the meridian points, you’re actually allowing them to be released from your nervous system.
Secondly, resentment can sometimes be a matter of perspective. We may be harboring ill feelings towards someone who may not have even intentionally meant to hurt us. Many times we often “project” our past hurts onto others who may have just unconsciously said or done something to remind us of a past experience.
After tapping through a few rounds, finish off with a round or two of more encouraging and positive words for yourself. Perhaps that person isn’t that bad after all. Maybe you overreacted just a little bit. Or perhaps new light has just shone on the situation to put it into better context.
Many amazing breakthroughs can occur during your tapping experience, so just follow where your emotions and memories take you.
