Does Tapping Really Work?
Read on to learn more about what Tapping is and discover the science and research behind this evidence-based approach to stress relief and healing.
What Is EFT Tapping?
Tapping, also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a practice that combines the principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.
The EFT technique involves using your fingertips to tap on specific acupressure points along the body’s meridians.
While you tap on the EFT Tapping points, you focus on the emotions or physical sensations that are causing you distress. You might think or speak about your anxiety, a fear, or a physical pain, for example, as you move through the Tapping sequence. (You can read more about the Tapping technique on our Tapping 101 page.)
The idea is to help calm down your nervous system and rewire the brain to respond in a more productive way to whatever is distressing you.
Tapping affects the part of the brain responsible for our stress response – the amygdala. The amygdala helps us react to stressful situations, sending us into fight-or-flight mode so that we can stay safe in an emergency and avoid danger.
Unfortunately, in modern times, the amygdala’s survival instinct is activated way too often, and it is triggered in everyday situations where we aren’t under any real threat.
So when you experience a stressful event, or even when you think of something that is stressful (or something that contributes to pain, anxiety, or discomfort), it triggers the amygdala to set off its fire alarm. But when you practice Tapping, you think about the things that are causing you stress while also sending a calming signal to the brain, letting it know it is safe to relax.
Through Tapping, we ultimately allow our brains and bodies to relax, so that we can let go of whatever might be causing us stress, anxiety, pain, or discomfort and find greater peace and ease.
But does Tapping really work? And can it actually make a difference for you? Let’s find out…
Does Tapping Work? Exploring the Science Behind Tapping
I can personally say with certainty that I know Tapping works. I’ve seen it a hundred times over in the people I’ve worked with. In fact, I believe so deeply in Tapping that I’ve built my entire career around sharing it with as many people as I can – hoping that they, too, can benefit from this amazing tool.
But you don’t have to just take my word for it. Tapping is an evidence-based method that is grounded in science and research.
More than 100 studies have been published in peer-review journals on the effectiveness of EFT for anxiety, stress, depression, cravings, pain, PTSD, fears, and so much more.
For example, one 2019 study found that a 4-day workshop in EFT Tapping decreased the participants’ pain levels by 57%, anxiety by 40%, depression by 35%, and cravings by 74%, while also increasing their happiness levels by 31%.[1]
Pretty incredible, right?
But that’s just one of many Tapping research studies that show some really promising results. Here are just a few more examples of what the research has found about the benefits of Tapping for common concerns:
Anxiety. A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on Tapping for anxiety suggested that EFT leads to significant reductions in anxiety scores.[2]Depression. A review study from 2016 found that Tapping was highly effective in reducing symptoms of depression in a variety of situations. In fact, the effects were as good, if not better, than standard depression treatments like medications and therapy. The results of the study showed an average reduction in symptoms of 41% when using Tapping for depression![3]Sleep. A study in lawyers with sleep disorders found EFT Tapping to help improve sleep, and another study in older people found Tapping to be effective for treating insomnia.[4,5]Cravings and weight loss. A study in overweight and obese adults showed that a 4-week EFT treatment led to reductions in food cravings six months later, and improved body weight, BMI, and feelings of having “power over food” 12 months later.[6]Pain. People who participated in a 4-day EFT training workshop experienced a 57% reduction in pain levels.[1] And another study in a group of healthcare workers showed that pain levels dropped significantly immediately following EFT Tapping, with improvements in pain ratings lasting for several months after as well.[7]Headaches. Researchers found that people with tension-type headaches who were taught EFT twice a day for two months were able to see reduced intensity and frequency of their headache episodes.[8]PTSD. One survey of EFT practitioners revealed that almost 90% of the practitioners see the vast majority of their PTSD clients make progress with Tapping (with less than 10% of their clients making little or no progress). And 65% of the practitioners also reported that about 60% of their clients can fully resolve their PTSD with the support of Tapping.[9]And like I said, over 100 studies on Tapping have been done at this point to validate the effectiveness of Tapping. So what you see in the list above is just scratching the surface.
There are many more examples to draw from, showing that Tapping really can make a difference in a wide variety of mental and physical health concerns.
Please note: As always, if you are experiencing any physical or mental health concerns, consult with a doctor, therapist, or other qualified health practitioner. This information is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice.
But wait, there’s more! The research on Tapping also shows that Tapping is actually associated with positive biochemical changes within the body, too.[12]
How Tapping Positively Affects Your Physiology
So, does Tapping really work? The large body of research studies we’ve just learned a little bit about sure provides a lot of supporting evidence that it does. People with a variety of different concerns tend to feel very different before and after Tapping.
But does Tapping actually create measurable differences in the body? It turns out that yes – when we Tap, we can create positive changes in the body’s biochemistry.
More and more, we are seeing exciting research published on Tapping that investigates how it can affect things like hormone levels, heart rate, blood pressure, and more.
Dr. Dawson Church led a landmark study in 2012 to see how EFT Tapping influences the stress hormone cortisol.
His study found that EFT Tapping led to a reduction in cortisol levels by 24% and that it had a bigger effect than the traditional stress management method of psychotherapy.[10]
In 2020, another group of researchers led by Dr. Peta Stapleton looked to replicate the results from that original study. And remarkably, their results suggested that EFT Tapping for stress reduced cortisol levels by 43% – after just one hour of Tapping![11]
Tapping has also been linked to reduced resting heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure.[1]
This research shows us that Tapping promotes physical, and measurable, changes in our body’s biochemistry. How amazing is that? So not only do people report feeling better after Tapping, but these studies show that physiological changes within the body occur as well.
Why Does Tapping Work So Well?
There’s a lot more to learn about Tapping and the scientific mechanisms behind its effectiveness. But as we can see from the research so far, it really does work, and it works well!
One of the reasons I believe Tapping is so effective for reducing stress and anxiety and helping us process difficult experiences is that it doesn’t just manage your stress on the surface level. Instead, Tapping helps to actually regulate the brain’s stress response.
Tapping is really effective at putting your body into a relaxed state where it feels safe. This helps us to feel our feelings, face our fears, process our difficult memories, and so on. And in the process, it helps us to rewire the brain so that it knows we are not in real danger… that it can calm down, let go, and get back to helping us feel better.
Because of this, Tapping allows us to truly let go of our stress or difficult emotions, allowing us to move forward with greater ease. It can lead to major breakthroughs and long-lasting transformation.
Tapping is also a true mind-body approach, working on the physical, mental, and emotional levels. As Dr. Dawson Church once explained,
“EFT gives you the best of both worlds – body and mind – like getting a massage during a psychotherapy session.”And finally, I believe part of the power of Tapping is that it works really quickly. In just minutes, the Tapping technique has the power to really make a difference in how you feel – something that other therapeutic healing tools can take weeks or months to achieve.
Give Tapping a Try for YourselfIf you are new to Tapping and wondering if it really works, I encourage you to give it a chance and see for yourself!
Aside from the evidence-based benefits we’ve talked about already, Tapping also offers these advantages:
It doesn’t take a lot of time to do – you can feel a shift in just a few minutes. It is very simple and easy to apply. You don’t need any special tools or equipment – you can do it yourself, wherever you are, whenever you want to.It is free to learn and free to practice – making it a low-cost solution. It puts the power to heal and feel better back into your own hands. If you are ready to learn how to Tap, a great place to start is our app, The Tapping Solution App.
There are many different Tapping Meditations in the App to choose from, on topics ranging from releasing anxiety to healing your body to improving your sleep. The meditations will guide you through the Tapping process, taking the guesswork out of it.
And in case you are still wondering, “But does Tapping really work?” Here’s one more piece of evidence you might find intriguing.
When we look at data from our own app users, we find that on average, people report a 29% reduction in anxiety and a 31% reduction in stress after a guided Tapping Meditation session.[12]
Tapping really can be a powerful tool for positive change and healing. I can’t wait to hear how it works for you!
Until next time…
Keep Tapping!

Tapping for Anxiety Relief
If so, you aren’t alone. Feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, stress, fatigue, and burnout have unfortunately become par for the course in modern life.
So much of our life force gets taken up by anxiety. We walk around stuck in this perpetual state of worry and overload. It seems like the stress will never end, and we constantly feel like we just can’t take it any longer. Ultimately, anxiety keeps us from being in the moment and actually enjoying our lives.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. You deserve to live a life you love – and you can!
What if I told you that there was a simple, easy technique for anxiety relief that could help to get to the root of your stress?
What if I told you that you could release these old patterns of feeling stuck in perpetual overwhelm, that you could process your negative emotions, and that you could let go of your anxiety?
That’s where the power of Tapping comes in. This simple method for anxiety relief allows you to rewire the body and brain so that you can create the life of your dreams without anxiety constantly taking over.
Read on to learn a little bit more about anxiety and explore how Tapping for anxiety can help you create the positive transformation that you deserve.
Please note: As always, if you are experiencing any physical or mental health concerns, consult with a doctor, therapist, or other qualified health practitioners. This information is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice.
Anxiety, the Amygdala, and Fight or Flight
Anxiety is our body’s way of reacting to stress and alerting us to potential dangers.
When we are stressed, a part of our brain called the amygdala fires into action and triggers the stress response. The amygdala’s job is to help us survive and to protect us from danger.
You might have heard of this referred to as the “fight-or-flight” response. It’s a natural instinct leftover from way back when our ancestors had to cope with life-or-death situations, like running from tigers and bears in the wild in order to stay alive.
Nowadays, we aren’t often facing such life-or-death situations. However, our nervous systems are still programmed to be on high alert for potential dangers, and the stress response of the amygdala is still very much ready for action at all times.
In fact, everyday situations in the modern world can, in no time at all, elicit that same fight-or-flight response. It can happen whenever we perceive a threat of any sort, which often occurs when we are actually in no real danger.
Sometimes, it might be something big – like financial concerns, a major life change, or a global conflict – that can fuel anxiety and kick our bodies into a state of fight or flight.
But other times, it doesn’t take much at all to get anxiety off and running. Anxiety might be triggered by sitting in a traffic jam, being too busy with work projects, or having a tense conversation with a partner. It’s common to experience anxiety when taking a test, public speaking, or meeting new people.
In today’s world, a lot of us are living in a constant state of low-grade stress and anxiety.
Our body’s fight-or-flight mode is turned on all the time, which really begins to take a toll on our mental and physical health.
But here’s the great news: you can learn to reprogram your brain and body to release that anxiety, and free up some energy to put towards creating a life that feels more balanced, calm, and at ease.
One scientifically-backed way to do that? EFT Tapping!
How Does Tapping for Anxiety Work?
I like to think of Tapping as a way to send your mind’s prehistoric programming back into extinction. It is a way to reprogram the patterns that keep us stuck in the fight-or-flight stress response so that we can let go of anxiety and reclaim our own lives.
Here’s how it works.
Tapping, also called Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT, is a unique combination of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.
EFT Tapping for anxiety is a simple technique. You simply use your fingers to tap on nine specific points on the body that correspond to traditional Chinese medicine acupressure meridian points. And as you tap, you speak about what is causing you stress and anxiety.
You start with statements that recognize how you feel, such as what’s going on, what’s bothering you, and what the reasons are for your anxiety. Then, as the process moves on, you shift towards positive statements encouraging you to release and let go of the emotions and experiences that are no longer serving you.
Tapping along the meridians at those nine specific Tapping points sends calming signals to the amygdala – that part of the brain that controls the stress response. When we Tap, we are able to actually alter the stress response, lowering cortisol and other stress hormones in the body (more on that later).
Thinking about the thing that you are anxious about while physically tapping on these Tapping points sends calming signals to the brain and ultimately rewires how we think and feel. Instead of triggering fight-or-flight mode, as usual, we send an opposing signal to the body letting it know that it is safe, that it is okay to relax, and that all is well.
This tells your brain and body that it is okay to let go of that stress and anxiety, making room for more of what you want in your life.
You can use Tapping to release anxiety, and also to welcome in and create more of what you want in your life: confidence, hope, peace, courage, and so much more.
If you’re thinking that this all might sound a little too good to be true, stick with me. There’s been a whole lot of research done on Tapping to back this up and provide evidence that it really works, and that it works super well!
The Tapping Technique for Anxiety Has Been Validated by Scientific Research
Tapping has been clinically proven to help reduce the stress response and provide natural anxiety relief.
There’s a whole body of research supporting using Tapping for anxiety. A systematic review and meta-analysis study from 2016 that looked at data from 14 different high-quality studies found that EFT for anxiety leads to significant reductions in anxiety scores. The authors of the study concluded that Tapping had what they considered to be a large treatment effect when it came to lowering anxiety.[1]
In one specific study, researchers found that 76% of people with anxiety disorders treated with EFT Tapping techniques experienced complete remission of their symptoms over the course of treatment, and that 90% experienced at least some improvement.[2]
Tapping has been studied for specific types of anxiety too. Research shows it can be helpful with things like test anxiety, public speaking anxiety, and dental anxiety for example.[3]
And what’s even more incredible is that Tapping actually results in changes within the body and to our biology too – working from the inside out to create real, tangible benefits.
A groundbreaking study in 2012 showed us that using EFT for anxiety actually lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body.[4] This was an incredible finding that helped us better understand how Tapping can have such profound effects for so many people.
More recent findings have shown Tapping to help reduce heart rate and blood pressure as well.[5]
So, Tapping can actually alter our biochemistry to support greater ease and reduce the effects of stress! Pretty incredible, right?
How to Use Tapping to Relieve Anxiety

Unlocking the Benefits of Tapping for Depression
It can affect how you feel, think, and manage daily activities, with ripple effects into all areas of life like working, parenting, sleeping, eating, and more.[1] It is a very difficult condition to experience, and also to manage.
Talk therapy and prescription medications are the two most well-used treatment options for depression. And while these are very helpful tools for many people, they can also have their drawbacks. They can be costly, time-consuming, and hard to access. Plus, antidepressant medications can come with unwanted side effects.
For that reason, many people are looking for natural remedies for depression that can provide safe, easy, and low-cost relief. Today, I want to talk about one of those natural ways to deal with depression that has been proven to be incredibly effective: Tapping!
Tapping for depression is a powerful way to help people with depression get back to feeling like themselves. Let’s learn a little bit more about depression, how Tapping can help, and the research behind this game-changing tool for depression relief.
Please note: As always, if you are experiencing any physical or mental health concerns, consult with a doctor, therapist, or other qualified health practitioners. This information is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice.
Signs and Symptoms of DepressionDepression can look different for different people, and there are various types – it’s not a one-size-fits-all disorder.
But generally speaking, the signs and symptoms of depression can often include:
Persistent sadness, anxiousness, or “empty” moodFeelings of hopelessness or pessimismIrritabilityLoss of interest or pleasure in activitiesDecreased energy and fatigueRestlessnessDifficulty concentratingInterrupted sleepAppetite and weight changesThoughts of death or suicideUnexplained aches and pains [1]As a mood disorder, depression involves strong emotions and emotional experiences. Some of the major risk factors for developing depression include stress, major life changes, trauma, physical ailments, and more.[1]
Tapping for Depression: What Is It and How Does It Work?
As a condition with a strong emotional component, depression is an excellent target for Tapping – a technique designed to help us acknowledge and let go of negative emotions and unresolved problems, send calming signals to our brain, and bring our lives back into balance.
Tapping, also often known as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), is a healing tool based on the combined principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.
The Tapping technique asks you to focus on a negative emotion or experience, while you use your fingers to tap on nine specific meridian points on the body (traditional Chinese medicine acupressure points). When you physically tap on these points, it sends calming signals to the brain letting it know it’s safe to relax.
When we think about the issue at hand and simultaneously tap on the EFT Tapping points, it helps our mind understand that we are safe, and that all is well. It helps calm the brain and body so that we can release the stress, anger, sadness, overwhelm, or other root cause of our distress.
When it comes to depression, Tapping can be of benefit from all different angles. For example, it can be used to:
Address difficult experiences or traumas from the past, helping you to let go of unresolved emotions. Release strong emotions like hopelessness, discontent, grief, or anxiety. Boost energy, focus, productivity, and motivation. Increase your confidence, self-compassion, sense of self-worth, and more. All of these benefits can support a person with depression to feel better, and the Tapping technique can be tailored to the individual for maximum support.
For those with depression, Tapping can be a major game-changer.
I’ve seen it time and time again in real life. I have watched people struggling with low mood and depression to find their sense of self again – regaining their energy, mood, productivity, and zest for life.
And the great thing is that it can be done from the comfort of your own home. It’s free, completely safe, and easy to learn.
But you don’t just have to take my word for it. There’s also a robust body of scientific research to support the use of Tapping for depression, anxiety, and many other mental and physical concerns as well.
Research Says Tapping for Depression Really Works
Many different studies have been conducted on a wide variety of groups of people with depression – from college students to postmenopausal women to healthcare workers. They have found over and over again that Tapping makes a big difference and is an effective way to help with depression.
In 2016, researchers performed a type of study called a systematic review and meta-analysis on EFT for depression. In basic terms, this means that they rounded up all of the high-quality studies they could find published on the topic in a given time period, and then assessed the results to better understand what the studies could tell us about the usefulness of using EFT Tapping to relieve depression.
In the end, they included data from 20 studies in their review.[2] And what they found was incredible! Their conclusion was that EFT Tapping was highly effective in reducing symptoms of depression in a variety of populations and settings. In fact, they noted an average reduction in depression symptoms of 41% across all of the studies. 41%! Can you believe that?[2]
And here’s what is even more impressive…
The authors found that Tapping was at least as effective, if not more effective, than the standard treatments for depression like antidepressant medication and talk therapy.[2]
So not only does Tapping work for depression, but it seems to work really, really well – rivaling the standard, conventional treatments.
The research studies looking at Tapping for depression continue to show promise to this day as more and more are published. A study from 2021 in postmenopausal women, for example, found that EFT Tapping helped cut depression scores by almost half.[3]
Another study from 2019 looked at changes in psychological and physiological measures in participants before and after an EFT Tapping workshop to better understand the effects of Tapping for anxiety and depression, along with other factors like pain, blood pressure, and more. They found depression scores decreased by over 30% after just a 4-day training in Tapping![4]

Envisioning Peace for Ukraine and the World – Tapping Meditation
I know there are a lot of people who have a heavy heart from the violence that is taking place in Ukraine, as well as other areas around the world.
In these times, it feels like there is nothing we can do. But is that really true?
Have you ever heard of the Maharishi Effect? It’s the idea that individual brain waves can affect the collective consciousness.
The exact science on how the brain waves of a small meditating group can affect the actions of the greater population hasn’t been fully explained, but nearly 50 studies have been done on the subject and have been reported in prestigious publications such as the Journal of Crime and Justice.
So with this concept in mind, I wanted to record a Tapping Meditation that each of us as individuals could use to help add to the collective consciousness of promoting peace.
This Tapping Meditation will serve not only to reduce your personal stress and anxiety about the situation in Ukraine and violence in the world, but potentially make an actual difference in the outcome.
It’s free in our Tapping Solution App, and I’m also making it available to listen to here so that you can share it with those who may not yet have the app.
You can repeat this meditation whenever you feel led to do so, and I encourage you to share it.
I’m envisioning peace in Ukraine along with the rest of the world, and I’m so grateful that you’re on this journey with me.
Until next time…
Keep Tapping
Nick Ortner

10 Mantras to Light Your Inner Fire
If so, a simple way to get started is by just reading these simple statements, or affirmations.
These mantras are designed to help keep that inner fire within us burning brightly…to help us remember that we can trust in ourselves and believe in ourselves – no matter what.
They are designed to help us remember how much we have already done from a place of strength, and how much more strength we have within us to keep moving forward.
I invite you to take a deep breath now, and then let these words just wash over you as you read them. If you feel like it, you can repeat them out loud. (This will take 30 seconds or so and is guaranteed to change your day!)
1. I deeply and profoundly believe in myself.
2. I recognize how far I’ve come already.
3. I acknowledge how many obstacles I’ve overcome, and how much growth I’ve made.
4. I give myself credit for the ways I’ve shown up for myself and for others.
5. I have done hard things before, and I can do hard things again.
6. I have all the resources I need within me.
7. I trust that I can stand on my own when I choose to.
8. And I trust that I can reach out for additional support when I choose to.
9. I take myself, my strengths, and my inner power seriously.
10. I am capable of great things.
Our inner fire burns brightest when we believe in ourselves, and trust that we are capable of greatness.
Let’s continue to stoke that fire of inner strength today, so that we can go out into the world and make magic happen.
For more encouragement, check out the hundreds of meditations in our Tapping Solution App, especially the Instant Boost and Micro Boost categories. It’s free to download with a bunch of free meditations to practice with.
Until next time…

Study Shows Tapping Brings Anxiety Relief to Nurses
The authors of an exciting new study that just came out in 2021 found that one simple tool was extremely effective for reducing stress, anxiety, and burnout in nurses involved in treating COVID during the pandemic – Tapping.
In the study, the authors took a group of 72 nurses who treated COVID patients, and they divided them into two groups. One group attended a guided online group EFT session, and the other received no treatment.
After just one single online group EFT tapping session, the nurses in that group experienced highly significant reductions in anxiety, stress, and burnout levels (while the nurses in the other group experienced no change).
Can you believe that? After just one, single session of guided Tapping, anxiety, stress, and burnout went down significantly. You can access the study here if you want to learn more about it.
Even though I’ve experienced the power of Tapping firsthand time and time again, these types of studies still astound me.
It is incredibly exciting to see the benefits of Tapping supported by such strong results in research studies like this one.
Here’s what I hope we will all take away from this today: if nurses on the frontline of the pandemic can get relief from their stress and anxiety with one single session of Tapping, then imagine how much you might be able to benefit from a regular Tapping practice?
And why not start now?
Here are some links to Tapping Meditations you can try right now if you could use a little relief from anxiety, stress, or burnout:
