When to “not” meet the Dalai Lama…
As you probably figured or know, I’m passionate about personal growth and healing- finding ways to improve my life, the lives of those I love and now people around the world. That passion is what drives me on a daily basis.
The other day, however, I asked myself…”Are there times when you can have too much personal growth and healing?”
I’ve been into this world, and by this world I’m referring to the broad category of personal growth/development/self-help/alternative healing for a long time. I have to credit my parents for my initial exposure, probably in early high school (or it might even have been middle school!) I still distinctly remember my Dad’s Nightingale-Conant tape sets. About the size of a large binder, with a big picture of the expert on the cover (Earl Nightingale, Zig Ziglair, Brian Tracy and others) and an enticing subject matter, “Lead the Field”, “A View from The Top” and others. My dad would buy them, I would borrow them and start filling my brain with this amazing information.
My mom played a big part with one purchase in particular. She is often lovingly teased in the family about her love of QVC and the Home Shopping Network, and while I find a few of her TV purchases questionable, when she bought one of Tony Robbins’ courses, she made the right move.
I “borrowed” it as I did my father’s tapes and was hooked. And thus the road to a lifelong thirst for information that could improve my life was paved. One of my roommates after college joked that I should just have my headphones surgically implanted, since they were constantly in my ears!
All that to say, “I love this stuff” I love listening to Wayne Dyer, and Carolyn Myss and Louise Hay… when I come home from the “I Can Do It’s” that I speak at, I listen to the other speakers. This is my life.
So the other day, when faced with an amazing opportunity to join my friend Scarlett Lewis to visit with the Dalai Lama, the choice seemed an obvious one. The Dalai Lama! What an opportunity- what an honor! I would be accompanying Scarlett (along with Dr. Lori Leyden), so this wasn’t a meeting for me personally, but still… to hear him speak, to learn from him, to be in his presence.
Initially, I said “Yes! I’ll be there!” but as the date neared, something stirred inside me that was telling me otherwise.
That stirring said, “You’re tired…” (I had just spent the weekend speaking in Atlanta at an ‘I Can Do It’ conference and had some very early morning flights)
That stirring said, “There are no missed opportunities…”
That stirring said, “Your uncle is coming to visit from Argentina, someone you only see every 5 years or so at most…”
That stirring said, “Stay home”
Of course, my passionate impulses wanted to reject all those stirrings. I wanted to keep moving forward, at breakneck speed, meeting people, connecting with them. “What if I can share tapping with the Dalai Lama?” “How great would it be to get a picture with him?” “What might I learn from him?”
And while there’s nothing wrong with those thoughts or moving forward, something told me it was time to slow down.
Something said to me, “What might your uncle have to teach you?” “What might those extra precious hours with your family be like?” “What would the Dalai Lama do?!?”
I’m sure you can guess the choice I made: I politely declined the invitation and stayed home. Of course there was a part of me that tugged and said, “What if you made a mistake?!?” But when I did some tapping on it, I got real clarity and comfort that this was the right decision.
The result?
A lovely evening with my family, on a beautiful Connecticut night, drinking some great wine and hearing stories from my uncle from decades past. Stories of how my parents met (I knew the basics but got more details), stories about my grandfather who I didn’t know, stories about me as a kid, stories that nourished a part of my soul like nothing else could. Connection with those I love and a memory that will last a lifetime.
And guess what? If I had gone and seen the Dalai Lama, and had a chance to chat with him, he probably would have said, “What are you doing here? You should be with your family…” haha! But seriously, I think his advice would be to do what I did, to slow down, to connect with my family, to drink some great wine, enjoy a beautiful May evening in Connecticut and just BE.
So what did I learn from this, a few simple lessons:
1. There are no missed opportunities. If something doesn’t feel right, trust that. You’ve got to make sure that it’s not just fear or self-sabotage holding you back (and you can tap on that), but oftentimes, you simply need to say “No” or “Not now”
2. Let that Inner Knowing guide you. When you know, you KNOW. I’ve been more and more surprised on a daily basis just how strong and wise my intuition can be. But you’ve got to listen to it. Again, tapping can help you gain that clarity. When you can’t make a decision or feel stuck… “Even though I can’t make this decision…” Just a few minutes of tapping and you’ll be surprised about the clarity you experience.
3. Don’t take yourself, or others, too seriously. One of my favorite parts about my evening with my family? We laughed. Deep, hearty chuckles at great stories, old jokes and being together. That nourishes the soul in the deepest of ways. That evening wasn’t about the next big thing, or spiritual growth or improving myself, it was just about BEING.
Of course, I’m just as passionate today about personal growth, about finding ways to improve my life. I’m busy at work today, moving forward, learning, helping, healing. And because I took that time, to just “BE”, I can bring more of myself, my best self, to this work.
So take some time to find that balance for yourself. When is it time to slow down? When do you need to recharge? When are you pushing just a little too hard? Or when are you reaching for things that seem “spiritual” or about “personal growth” but in fact disconnect you from the essence of your life.
And remember, the answer to all these questions is deep inside you. You KNOW.
Do you agree with my decision to stay home or do you think I’m crazy for missing the meeting?
Where do you need to slow down? What did you learn from this story? Share your comments below.

Happy Mothers Day
Happy Mothers Day!
We have a special (and funny) treat for all of you. In honor of mothers day Jessica hit the streets of New York city to ask an interesting question “What is the best advice your mothers has ever given you?”
For most of us our mothers are our first mentors and teachers. It can be helpful to look back and reflect on the positive lessons we did learn from our moms on this day and show our gratitude. If you’re mom is still around on this mothers day, instead of just wishing her a “happy mothers day” spend time asking her questions about her childhood and her greatest lessons. You just may be surprised as to how much you may learn!
After watching the video, comment below and let us know what the best advice your mother ever gave you was!
Jessica first tried filming this video a few weeks ago and on that first day she had some “challenges.” We thought we’d share some of the bloopers from that first unsuccessful day of filming. :) She actually shared this video on her Facebook page at the time. Watch Jessica’s “Bloopers” video below and remember, even if things don’t go your way you can always laugh!

Study Drugs? How EFT Can Help You Function and Focus Better Than Any Pill
Published May 9th, 2013
by Nick Ortner
Do you ever struggle to focus? If you’re like most people in our fast-paced world, you probably do…
There’s a new fad that has popped up recently known as “study drugs”? Have you heard about “study drugs” yet? If you haven’t, there’s a good chance you will soon.
Apparently, they’re all the rage in classrooms and office buildings across the country, as more and more people have been using them to stay awake, alert and focused for hours at a time, allowing them to better tackle whatever task they have at hand.
Is it just me, or does that sound a little scary?
Thankfully, I’m not the only one who’s concerned. In fact, the situation has become so widespread that the American Association of Neurologists released a stern warning last month against this disturbing trend.
What’s going on? What are these study drugs anyway and why are so many people using them?
The Stress of Getting it All Done
So here’s the thing: you probably know exactly what these study drugs are. Once I did a little digging I realized that I also knew exactly what they were:
Vyvanse; Concerta; Ritalin; Aderall. Do any of these ring a bell?
The correct term for these medications is “cognitive function drugs”, and they’re typically prescribed to people with mental conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, more commonly known as ADHD. They’re legitimate medications for people who need help, and maybe you or a loved one might even have a prescription.
The problem is that so many people without a disorder of any kind are now regularly using these drugs. Some fake the necessary symptoms to gain a prescription from their doctor, while others acquire them illegally. They’re everywhere these days, and may have even become the norm in many sports as well. In a recent interview, the cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks, Richard Sherman, made the startling claim that “about half of the [NFL] league” takes Adderall to improve their performance on the field!
There are numerous reasons why this is such a big concern. For one thing, these drugs can have very negative side effects such as insomnia, sudden increases in blood pressure, and even heart attacks and strokes. As if those risks weren’t enough, study drugs can also be highly addictive.
With everyone from students to pro athletes now using these drugs just to function, it’s clear that most of us are not adequately dealing with the stress of everyday life. Our tasks, goals, benchmarks and deadlines are meant to be challenges, not insurmountable hurdles that require medical assistance for us to be able to tackle them. If that’s how they appear, then we need to take a different approach.
There are many natural techniques that help the average person find the concentration levels that they’re so desperately in search of. EFT Tapping is one of them, and in my opinion, it’s the best alternative of them all to these dreadful study drugs.
Why EFT Tapping Can Be An Effective Replacement for Study Drugs
The effect that most study drug users are chasing after is “the zone,” that feeling of being completely tuned into whatever it is they’re choosing to focus on. Once they’ve swallowed that pill, distractions fall by the wayside and they can get the job done.
But what are these distractions exactly, and why are they so all-consuming that people with no legitimate medical need think they require pills to block them out? That’s a question that can be addressed through Emotional Freedom Techniques, and once the answers are revealed and dealt with, it’s easy to tune them out when we need to.
So often, our limits to performance are anchored in our emotions. What if we don’t succeed? What will become of us? That pressure can be enormous. Furthermore, our distractions sometimes have nothing to do with what we’re working on at all. We can become so preoccupied with stress at home or even in the larger world, that it has a terrible effect on our productivity.
EFT Tapping is first and foremost a stress relief tool that allows us to address troublesome emotions that are making our lives difficult. By physically tapping on the body’s meridian energy points as we carry out the kind of keen personal inquiry typically found in psychotherapy, we can release these troublesome emotions that may have been holding us back, possibly making us ill, and yes, even making it difficult for us to focus and perform.
Simply put, with EFT Tapping one can eliminate the perceived need for study drugs altogether. If you haven’t tried tapping before, take a look at this short video to learn the technique. Within minutes you’ll be equipped to deal with much of the stress that you’re burdened with every day.
Ending a Potential Epidemic
It’s scary to think of a future where everyone in our society requires medication just to get through the day. Sadly, that’s not as unrealistic as it may sound. Recent statistics show that Americans are abusing prescription medications far more than they are illegal drugs such as marijuana and cocaine.
Study drugs make up a large chunk of these “legal” drugs.
Perhaps the scariest part is that many of those using these drugs are our very own children. What does it say when dangerous drugs are becoming an increasingly acceptable way to move forward on the path to success?
EFT Tapping gives us a reliable, simple and free way to address whatever anxieties, doubts and daily distractions may be getting in the way of what we’ve set out to do. It’s worth it to give it a try, not just to shake a steady diet of study drugs, but also to cope with whatever pressures and stresses you’re facing. By learning how to tap, you can achieve everything you’ve set out to accomplish, and in the process, help us move toward a healthier country. Let’s leave the medication for those who truly need it!
How to Tap to Focus Better…
OK, so are you ready to do some Tapping?
Before we start, take a deep breathe in…and then out. I always find that starting with a deep breathe helps to get my energy flowing and opens up my mind to better find what to tap on.
Calibration: On a scale of 0-1o, how much do you feel that you are struggling to focus right now (0 being not at all, and 10 being you’re really struggling to focus)
We’ll start off with a very general round of tapping, and then get into more specfics. (If you don’t know how to do the actual tapping, click here to learn how to tap)
ROUND ONE – General Tapping
Starting on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I can’t focus, I accept myself anyway”
Again on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I just can’t seem to focus, I accept myself anyway”
One last time on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I really want to focus, but I just can’t seem to, I accept myself anyway”
Now we’ll go through all the points:
Eyebrow Point: “I can’t focus”
Side of the Eye: “I just can’t seem to focus”
Under the Eye: “I really want to focus”
Under the Nose: “But I just can’t seem to focus”
Chin Point: “I’m struggling to focus”
Collarbone Point: “I need to get things done”
Underarm Point: “I need to focus, but I just can’t seem to focus”
Top of the Head: “I can’t focus, but I accept myself anyway”
And now take a deep breathe again.
Go ahead and calibrate again. On a scale of 0-1o, how much do you feel that you are struggling to focus right now? Don’t worry if it hasn’t changed much, or at all, as we’re just getting started.
That was just a general round. Let’s get to tapping on some more specifics for you.
ROUND TWO – What are you distracted by?
When you think about focusing, what do you think might be getting in your way?
Is there something else in your life that is running in your mind that is taking away your focus? Are you worried about your finances? Or struggling with a relationship? Has something happened today that you’re upset about? Has anything happened recently that has changed your stress level, either up or down?
Fill in this sentence: I’m struggling to focus because in the back of my mind, I’m distracted by _____________.
OK, let’s do some tapping…
Starting on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I’m struggling to focus because I’m distracted by _______________, I accept myself anyway.” (If you can’t think of anything just say “…because I’m distracted by something, and I can’t figure out what it is…”
Again on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I just can’t seem to focus because in the back of my mind I’m thinking about ______________, I accept myself anyway”
One last time on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I really want to focus, but I just can’t seem to because I’m distracted by __________________, I accept myself anyway”
Now we’ll go through all the points:
Eyebrow Point: “I’m distracted by _______________”
Side of the Eye: “I just can’t seem to focus”
Under the Eye: “I really want to focus”
Under the Nose: “But I just can’t seem to focus because I’m distracted by ________________”
Chin Point: “I’m struggling to focus”
Collarbone Point: “I need to get things done”
Underarm Point: “I need to focus, but I just can’t seem to focus because I’m distracted by _________________”
Top of the Head: “Even though I can’t focus because I’m distracted by ___________________, I accept myself anyway”
Back to the Eyebrow Point: “I’m struggling to focus because I’m distracted by ________________.
Side of the Eye: “What if I let this distraction go?”
Under the Eye: “What if I allowed this distraction to go away for a little while, so I can focus?”
Under the Nose: “What if I allowed myself to focus for a little while?”
Chin Point: “I’m struggling to focus because I’m distracted by _____________, but I accept myself anyway”
Collarbone Point: “I’m really distracted by _____________ in the back of my mind, but I don’t have to be.”
Underarm Point: “I can allow the noise of the distraction to quiet down for a little while, and allow myself to focus.”
Top of the Head: “I can allow the distraction to quiet down for a little while, and allow myself to focus.”
Go ahead and calibrate again. On a scale of 0-1o, how much do you feel that you are struggling to focus right now?
Now at this point, depending on what has come up for you, you have the choice to continue tapping on the distraction that has come up, or you can move on. If you had things come up as you were tapping, then I suggest continuing to do some tapping on what came up to resolve it, if it’s something you can address.
If you have something big that has come up that needs a lot of attention, and you’re at the office with other people around you, it may not be the best time. That’s when it’s best to tap to allow the distraction to quiet down for now, to allow you to focus. If you have the time and space to tap on what has come up, then feel free to do that.
ROUND THREE – What if I’m not able to focus and get the tasks done? And what if I do get them done?
Very often the stress of having to get certain things done prevents us from focusing. When we’re too tied to a certain outcome or result, it can inhibit our ability to focus and achieve what we want to get done.
So let’s ask ourselves some important questions: If I’m not able to focus and get this done, what will happen? How will I feel? Am I concerned about what somebody will think of me if I don’t get this done? If so, who is that and what am I worried that they’ll think or say? How will I feel towards myself? What emotions come up when you think about not being able to focus and not accomplishing what you need to get done?
So fill in the blank with what you think might happen: “If I’m not able to focus and get this done, ____________________”
And then let’s think about the flip side. If you are able to focus and get the task done that you’re wanting to focus on, what will happen? Is there any down side to getting the task done? What is the upset to getting it done? How will you feel about yourself? Is there anybody that will be happy that you were able to focus and is there anybody that will be upset?
So fill in the blank with what you think might happen if you do get it done: “If I am able to focus and get this done, _____________________”
OK, let’s get to some tapping…
I asked a number of questions above that can bring up things to tap on. Find what is best for you to tap on. If you’re most concerned about what somebody will think of you, tap on that. If this biggest thing is that you’re really stressed about getting it done, tap on that. Listen to your body when you answer the above questions and tap on the issue that is strongest for you.
For the purposes of this tapping, I’m going to focus on general stress and anxiety about focusing and getting the task or tasks done.
Starting on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I feel stressed and anxious about focusing and getting this done, I accept myself anyway.” (Feel free to replace with any other emotions that have come up for you)
Again on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I just can’t seem to focus, and I’m stressed and anxious about getting this done, I accept myself anyway”
One last time on the Karate Chop Point: “Even though I really want to focus, but I just can’t seem to because I’m stressed and feel anxious about getting this done, I accept myself anyway”
Now we’ll go through all the points:
Eyebrow Point: “I’m really stressed about getting this done”
Side of the Eye: “I’m worried about not getting this done in time”
Under the Eye: “I’m stressed about there being so much to do”
Under the Nose: “What if I don’t get this done?”
Chin Point: “I have to get this done”
Collarbone Point: “But I’m just so stressed about getting this done”
Underarm Point: “I feel so stressed about getting a lot of things done!”
Top of the Head: “Even though I’m stressed about getting this done, I accept myself anyway”
Back to the Eyebrow Point: “Maybe I can take it one step at a time”
Side of the Eye: “What if I let some of this stress go?”
Under the Eye: “What if I allowed this stress to go away for a little while, so I can focus?”
Under the Nose: “What would happen if I actually was able to focus and get this done?”
Chin Point: “Even if I’m not able to focus and get this done, I accept myself anyway”
Collarbone Point: “What if I just did my best and allowed the stress and anxiety to go away?”
Underarm Point: “I can allow the stress and anxiety to quiet down for a little while, and allow myself to focus.”
Top of the Head: “I can allow the stress to release from my body, and allow myself to focus.”
Go ahead and calibrate again. On a scale of 0-1o, how much do you feel that you are struggling to focus right now?
Those were just three quick rounds to get you going. Continue tapping as you feel the need on things that came up for you.
And remember, you don’t need “study drugs” or anything else to help you focus. All you need when your struggling to focus is take a few minutes to find what’s blocking you and tap to let it go.
What came up for you as you were doing the Tapping? Do you struggle with focusing? And if so, what do you think is getting in your way? Leave us your comments below.

The Tapping Solution Sneak Peek! – Chapter 7: Releasing Physical Pain
Published Wednesday April 30th, 2013
by Nick Ortner
Here’s another sneak peek into the inside of The Tapping Solution book, a New York Times Bestseller and Amazon #1 Bestseller for Stress Management. Here’s a short section from Chapter 7 that you might enjoy.
The Tapping Solution – Chapter 7
Releasing Physical Pain
If there is a single definition of healing it is to enter with mercy and awareness those pains, mental and physical, from which we have withdrawn in judgment and dismay.
Stephen Levine
My sister vehemently disagreed with me.
“But Patricia’s pain isn’t some psychological issue! It says here that she fractured her L1 vertebra. She has rods and bolts in her back! How could tapping possibly help?”
We were sitting around a table in July of 2007, reviewing applications for the documentary retreat. We had a stack of paper in front of us—people desperate for anything to help them relieve pain, lose weight, overcome grief, and much more.
Patricia, whose application Jessica was reading, had been in a terrible boating accident where she shattered her L1, one of the large lumbar vertebrae of the lower back. Surgeons had succeeded in stabilizing her back with four titanium rods and eight sets of screws and bolts. But the remaining pain was excruciating. She was taking morphine, Percocet, Norco, and Valium.
Page 95
She had trouble sleeping, so on top of everything else, she took Ambien to get a good night’s rest. Even with all the meds, she was regularly in pain and stressed out about her difficult situation.
The argument I was having with my sister was whether EFT would work on pain that had a clear physical cause. It was her understanding at the time that EFT was most effective for psychological or psychosomatic pain issues—stemming from repressed emotions—but I knew there was more to the story than that. Using my project-manager/big-brother veto, I overruled Jessica’s protestations and accepted Patricia into the four-day event.
She showed up for the weekend in considerable pain, after riding in the car for six hours. It was evident that as much as she was trying to keep her spirits up—she was naturally a determined and positive person—the pain was simply wearing her down. She had shared with us on her application that “it still feels like I’m living a bad dream that I’ll wake up out of. . . . Everything has been modified . . . and I’m still adapting, adjusting, and trying to find the right balance.” She went on to say, “I hate that I always have to ask, How will this activity/event/decision affect my back? I’m much slower than I used to be, and that’s frustrating. I’m afraid that people may perceive me as being handicapped. The accident has totally redefined my life, and I resent that but try to focus on the positive.”
Tap on the Diagnosis
EFT expert Rick Wilkes, who was one of the facilitators at the Tapping Solution event, spent the weekend working with Patricia to relieve her pain and help her move forward in life.
One of the first things he addressed was everything the doctors had told her about her back—about what was possible and not possible. The diagnosis and prognosis, especially since we are often most vulnerable at the time we hear them, can have devastating effects on our bodies and our futures. When we hear “you’ll always have pain” or “you’ll never be active again,” the body internalizes that limiting belief on a subconscious level. On the conscious level, we often operate as if it’s the truth as well.
Patricia loved doing yoga before the accident and was told she would “never do yoga again.” Emotionally, this devastated her—sending negative chemicals coursing through the body, and it limited what she thought was possible. Perhaps if she had never been told that, she might have attempted to do yoga—slowly stretching, opening up, and healing. But her doctors’ pronouncement ended that possibility in her mind.
Page 96
Until she tapped, that is! Rick expertly guided her back through everything the doctors had said to her and how she felt about it. They systematically tapped to clear the negative emotions she felt and to address the subconscious messages her body was storing.
This tapping, along with other approaches we’ll cover in the rest of the chapter, had incredible results. By the end of the weekend, Patricia felt no pain in her back. The constant heaviness from the rods and screws was gone. And, perhaps most important, she felt hopeful for the future and excited about what was possible for her— she was no longer focused on everything she couldn’t do! After the event, she got off all pain and sleeping medications and started doing yoga again. An incredible result!
Try It Yourself: Tapping on the Diagnosis
When you think about any pain you might be experiencing, ask yourself,
What do I know to be true about this pain?
What have my doctors told me is going on with my body?
What did I read online about what’s going on with my body?
What do I believe to be true about my condition?
Take a few minutes and answer these questions, preferably on paper, in as much detail as possible. We’ll use this list as the basis to begin tapping. Your list might look like this:
• I have a slipped disc in my back. (Feel free to get as specific as possible—i.e., I have a slipped disc in my third vertebra that is degenerating and now causes a throbbing, red pain.)
• The doctors told me it would always hurt.
• The doctors told me eventually it will need surgery.
• The doctors told me it is degenerating and will likely get worse.
• The only way the pain goes away is if I take pain medication.
• I believe I’ll have this pain forever and it will only get worse.
Go back through every item on your list, and give it a number on a 0-to-10 scale, noting how true it feels to you. If you absolutely, positively know you have a slipped disc in your back and that’s the truth, give it a 10.
Page 97
If you fully believe it will
always hurt, give it a 10. If part of you doesn’t believe that, it might be a 7 or 8. Now take a moment and rate the overall pain you’re feeling. Give it a number on the 0-to-10 scale.
We’re going to take these statements and, the first time through, combine them into one tapping round.
Tapping Script
Tapping on the Diagnosis

Karate Chop: Even though I have a slipped disc in my back, I deeply and completely accept myself. (Repeat three times.)
And now moving through the points:
Eyebrow: This slipped disc . . .
Side of Eye: This slipped disc in my back . . .
Under Eye: It’s throbbing and painful . . .
Under Nose: The doctors told me I have a slipped disc . . .
Chin: The doctors told me it would always hurt . . .
Collarbone: The doctors told me it would eventually need surgery . . .
Under Arm: The doctors told me it would likely get worse . . .
Top of Head: The only way the pain goes away is if I take pain medication . . .
Eyebrow: I believe I’ll have this forever and it will only get worse . . .
Side of Eye: This slipped disc in my back . . .
Under Eye: This painful slipped disc . . .
Under Nose: This throbbing, red-hot pain . . .
Chin: I believe it will only get worse . . .
Collarbone: I believe what the doctors told me about my back . . .
Under Arm: The only way the pain goes away is if I take pain medication . . .
Top of Head: This painful slipped disc.
Take a deep breath . . . and let it go.

Page 98
Remember, this language is just an example for you to see what tapping a diagnosis can look and sound like. The key is for you to come up with your own language, to speak your truth, and to follow your intuition on the issue.
So now, as always, we’re looking for two things:
1. Where are the numbers now—how did the pain shift?
2. What came up?
Check in on your original pain number. Has it gone up? Down? Has the pain shifted? Has it moved in the body? Write down your new number.
Then go back through the original statements and see how those numbers have shifted. Do you still believe you’ll be in pain forever? If you believe it a little less, if a glimmer of hope has appeared, write down the new number. Do you still believe everything your doctors told you to be true?
Then ask yourself, “What came up for me during that tapping?” Did you find yourself getting very emotional when you said, “The doctors told me it would eventually need surgery”? That’s a clue that there’s more there to be tapped on. What phrase stuck out the most? What new thoughts/ideas/emotions came up? Write those down and then use them as the basis for the next round.
You can tap again on all the same statements, going through them until they all clear and feel good, or you can shift to new statements—whatever is most present for you.
What you’ll find as you tap on the current situation and diagnosis is that you free yourself from the shackles of what others told you and what you believe about your pain. As we saw with Patricia, this release can have nearly miraculous effects. As hard as it is for a little sister to admit, Jessica has since acknowledged that I was right about accepting Patricia into the event.
“I didn’t believe Patricia could get rid of her pain,” she says. “But now I know how much our beliefs affect our pain levels. And that the body is miraculous in its ability to heal when we get out of the way!”
When We Become Our Pain
Patricia’s story still amazes me. Even though I had hoped her pain would improve by coming to the event, a part of me, just like Jessica, doubted we could help her, since she had such a physical, tangible issue.
Page 99
Often we hold on so tightly to the “truth” of physical pain and dis-ease—to what we know about it, to what others have told us about it—that it becomes part of our identity, part of who we are. We are no longer ourselves, we are no longer our hopes, dreams, goals, and desires. Instead we become the pain. We become the diagnosis; we are ruled by everything that’s wrong with us as opposed to everything that’s right with us.
The medical system, as well-intentioned as it is, doesn’t help in this sense. The Western medical industry is constantly looking for and reminding us about what’s wrong with the body—the “likely” future negative scenarios—as opposed to what’s right with the body. Can you imagine a doctor saying to you, “My diagnosis, from a purely medical perspective, based on the X-rays I see, is that you have a slipped disc in your back. That being said, I do want you to know that I’ve seen many X-rays with slipped discs where there was no pain. I’ve also seen slipped discs that healed on their own. Remember, the body has an innate ability to heal, and I have faith that you can move beyond this. Tell me a little more about the things in life that you’re excited about. What might your future look like once this pain goes away?”
What would that attitude, approach, and messaging do toward healing the body, toward providing people with hope and possibility, and toward giving us the native energy we need to move forward? Doctors in their white coats have incredible authoritative power. What they say is often taken in directly by the conscious and subconscious minds and can go on to rule our reality.
So until the medical industry changes its tune, use EFT to tap through any and all limiting beliefs about your body and its ability to heal.

Tapping for Boston – How to help from a distance
Published Wednesday April 17th, 2013
by Nick Ortner
Everyone here at The Tapping Solution is deeply saddened by Monday’s heart-breaking events at the Boston Marathon.
Many of you know that we recently formed The Tapping Solution Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the use and benefits of EFT/Tapping for trauma healing for all those who need it around the world.
We began our efforts in December right here in Newtown, Connecticut after we lost 26 students and teachers from our community in the Sandy Hook tragedy.
A number of people have emailed us since Monday asking what we were planning on doing to help those affected by the events in Boston.
Yesterday morning Dr. Leyden and her team of volunteers immediately reached out to those we’ve been helping in Newtown to see who was there in Boston on Monday, as we had heard that some of the families were near the finish line because the 26 miles of the race were being dedicated to the 26 victims of Sandy Hook.
Everyone from Newtown appears to be physically well, but these events have quite expectedly re-opened trauma for many.
We’re also planning to help others who were there in Boston on that day to deal with the trauma they’ve experienced. One of our main goals at The Tapping Solution is to be able to provide support in situations such as this around the world.
We do not yet have the infrastructure to be there on the ground in Boston, but we’re working to see what we can do in the coming weeks. If you personally know of somebody in the area who may need help, please let us know.
Here are some initial resources that we hope will help you and those around you:
If you feel that you’ve personally been triggered, try listening to Jessica’s Tapping for Stress Relief Meditations:

Remember, even if you feel powerless about outside circumstances, you always have the power to change and heal within – use this event as an opportunity to heal your personal traumas and wounds; just that can help change the world.

The brink of a meltdown…
Published Wednesday March 20th, 2013
by Nick Ortner
I thought I’d give you a sneak peek into the inside of The Tapping Solution book, being released on April 2nd and already a #1 Amazon bestseller for Stress Management. Here’s a short section from Chapter 3 that you might enjoy.
The Tapping Solution – Chapter 3
Relieving Anxiety, Feelings of Being Overwhelmed, and Stress
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Reinhold Niebuhr
Claire was on the brink of a meltdown . . . not that anyone around her could tell.
To the outside world, she was put together, happy; she had a good job, great kids, and a decent relationship with her husband. She was a loving, conscientious person, trying to make a difference in the world. In touch with her desire to improve herself and her life, Claire was aware of what she ate, thought, and did. She worked on herself, tried to lower her stress levels, and tried to be positive. But somehow, something was missing.
Page 33
It started innocently enough: weird pains in her body. Her doctors could find no medical explanation. She had trouble sleeping through the night, had a general feeling of fatigue during the day, was carrying extra pounds she couldn’t get rid of, no matter what she tried, and had an underlying feeling of anxiety and angst that just wouldn’t release.
When she found the space to breathe and examine her life, all she could think was, It’s too much.
It’s too much responsibility. There are too many things to do. There’s too much financial pressure. It’s too much to take care of the kids and be a great parent. It’s too much to try to be a loving wife. It’s too much to eat perfectly. It’s too much to look good, feel good, and keep up with the Joneses.
Modern life, with all its stressors—all the stuff we are intimately familiar with and know about—was overwhelming to her.
Sound familiar?
What’s “too much” in your life? What’s stressing you out the most? What do you feel like you just can’t handle? What physical symptoms are showing up in your body?
Feelings of generalized anxiety, being overwhelmed, fatigue, and intense responsibility have become par for the course in modern life. “This is just the way life is,” we tell ourselves. “It’s hurried; it’s busy; there’s one thing after another, each stacking on top of the next, to the point where sometimes it’s hard to breathe.”
You know those times when you do take a deep breath? Try it now, and see what you find. The realization may run something like this: Wow, I’ve been so stressed out. My body is running on overdrive, and I haven’t noticed it. When was the last time I actually relaxed?
We have developed patterns, ways of being and thinking, that simply do not serve us and are not sustainable. That’s why we get unknown pains in our bodies; it’s also why we come down with medical conditions that can be more easily blamed on biological problems like viruses, bacteria, or other outside forces. These patterns are why we walk around feeling stressed, anxious, and uncomfortable. They’re why we have trouble sleeping and why we can’t drop the weight we want to. That’s why we feel like there’s too much to do, like the stress will never end. It’s why we can’t be present in the moment or enjoy our lives.
Some of my clients argue that it’s not their way of thinking or being that’s the problem—the problem is life itself!
Page 34
They say to me, “I could be happy if such and such changed” or “I would be happy if I had less to do” or “I would be happy if I had more money” or “I would be happy if I lost weight.” Many of us simply believe that, until those things happen, we are not going to be happy.
Well, I’ve got some bad news. (I know, I’m just piling it on, right? The good news is coming, I promise!) The only way you’re going to have more money, lose weight, be healthier, and feel more fulfilled is if you first change your patterns and ways of thinking. You must find a way to lower your stress levels, process your negative emotions, let go of the past, and stop repeating negative patterns. Only from there can you create the life you’ve truly dreamed of.
There was a time when this kind of stress reduction and pattern change might have seemed like a tall or impossible order, but now EFT tapping can make it all happen quickly.
In the first chapter, we saw the amazing effects that tapping can have on the body on a purely physical level, in terms of reducing the fight-or-flight response and calming the amygdala. The same goes for your emotional world. When you apply tapping to your existing patterns, beliefs, and emotions, your life changes almost instantly. It did for Claire—in seemingly miraculous ways, as you’ll see on the following pages—and it can for you, too.
“Nothing Ever Works . . .”
When I began chatting with Claire about her life and everything that was going on, one of the first things she shared with me was her frustration about all the stress-reduction methods she had tried in the past, from yoga, to meditation, to affirmations, to positive thinking. She had a deep belief that, for her, “nothing ever worked.” When we’ve been on a path of self-discovery and self-improvement for a few years and haven’t seen the results we expected or were promised, it can be extremely frustrating! But that frustration—and the expectation of another negative outcome—is exactly what can keep us stuck. Oftentimes, we pile that frustration on top of negative feelings about ourselves and about our commitment to making change happen.
I know what I should be doing, but I never do it.
I’ve tried other techniques, but they don’t seem to work.
It seems to work for other people, but it doesn’t work for me.
Page 35
I always start down a path, but never finish it. (We’re going to change that pattern right now, so you can finish this book!)
It’s important to clear this frustration, to clear your anxiety that the personaldevelopment techniques you try won’t work. It’s in this clearing that you open yourself up to new possibilities. Otherwise the mind-set that “nothing ever works” or the belief that “I never finish what I start” will keep manifesting. And then you won’t finish this book—even though the life breakthrough you’re looking for might be in Chapter 9! Or you might read every word but not do the actual tapping, which is where all the magic lies.
So let’s do some tapping right now to clear these negative expectations.
Tapping Script
“Nothing Ever Works . . .”
You’ll find throughout this book that I’ve made tapping scripts available for a variety of issues. All of them start with a “check-in” phrase, to determine if it’s something you need to work on.
For example, this script’s check-in phrase is I’m frustrated because nothing ever works for me. Go ahead and say that out loud a few times, and then rate how true it is on the 0-to-10 scale, with 10 being “absolutely true” and 0 being “not at all true.” Generally speaking, if your truth level is a 5 or more, it’s probably an issue you want to work on right away.
Remember, these are general phrases and ideas to get you started. If different language fits better for you, or if other ideas come up, feel free to follow your intuition.
Karate Chop: Even though I’m frustrated because nothing ever works for me, I deeply and completely accept myself.
Karate Chop: Even though I have a tendency to start something and not finish it, I deeply love and accept myself.
Karate Chop: Even though I’m anxious because nothing seems to work for me, I choose to relax now.
Eyebrow: Nothing ever works . . .
Side of Eye: All this frustration . . .
Under Eye: I’m frustrated because nothing works for me . . .
Under Nose: I’ve tried so many different things . . .
Chin: And nothing ever works . . .
Page 36
Collarbone: This probably won’t work . . .
Under Arm: This probably won’t work for me . . .
Top of Head: All this frustration . . .
Eyebrow: Nothing ever works . . .
Side of Eye: I start things and don’t finish them . . .
Under Eye: I’m anxious to try anything else . . .
Under Nose: Because I have so many experiences of things not working . . .
Chin: It works for other people . . .
Collarbone: But not for me . . .
Under Arm: All this frustration . . .
Top of Head: All this anxiety and frustration.
And now let’s do a positive round. (Remember, go on to the positive statements only when you feel relief or if the statements feel at least somewhat true. Don’t force the positive; keep tapping on what’s stopping you or bothering you until the positive feels more natural. If during a positive round your mind says, “I don’t believe you!” or “That’s not true!” then you probably need to go back to the negative beliefs until they clear.)
Eyebrow: I choose to be open to the possibility that this can work . . .
Side of Eye: I choose to release any frustration in my body . . .
Under Eye: Things have worked for me before . . .
Under Nose: I have made lots of positive changes . . .
Chin: And I choose to make more . . .
Collarbone: I choose to believe in my ability to change . . .
Under Arm: I choose to release any frustration or anxiety in my body . . .
Top of Head: Letting it go . . . letting it all go.
Identifying Cognitive Shifts and the “Apex Effect”
After doing this tapping script and bringing down her frustration, Claire went on to say, “You know what? That’s not true that nothing ever works. I’ve had a lot of successes and have really changed my life a lot in the past couple of years. I’m hopeful that this tapping can help even more.”
What had happened in the few minutes since Claire had told me, “Nothing ever works for me”? Had she been lying before? Did she change her mind in those few minutes?
Page 37
What happened is that before, she was running a pattern and belief system that said, “Nothing ever works for me.” Her brain and body were pulling up all those negative experiences from the past—all those mini traumas where she had let herself down, hadn’t forgiven herself, and hadn’t processed the experience. These experiences had created a limiting belief that she could not get past. By tapping on her feelings of frustration and on the story she was telling herself, we cleared the old thought pattern and allowed a new belief to spring forward.
When we use EFT on these feelings and experiences, a cognitive shift takes place that allows us to see more clearly, to reduce the noise in our head and in our body. Oftentimes, the shift is so profound that people almost don’t remember what they thought before. As I said before, EFT isn’t a mind eraser; it doesn’t delete memories in any way, but it does clear the negative emotional and energetic patterns behind a memory. Thus it changes our approach and response to the event—and to life going forward.
At the most extreme level, this shift is called the “Apex Effect.” The Apex Effect happens when a person’s thought patterns shift so dramatically that they don’t credit tapping as having made a difference. Some even say the belief was never a problem in the first place! Someone can be scared of spiders, tap to clear it, and then say they were never scared, because their mind has shifted so far from the fear that it doesn’t seem real in their life anymore. This is one of the reasons it’s always important to use the 0-to-10 scale after each round of tapping. It allows you to accurately gauge your progress and remember where you started.
Identifying Your Patterns
Throughout this book, we will explore your patterns regarding all sorts of major life topics, including weight loss, relationships, finances, and so forth. In this chapter, however, we’re going to continue to address the more generalized patterns—the limiting belief systems and habits that are contributing to the stress in your life. Stress itself is both the symptom and the cause of most of the challenges we face on a daily basis. Obviously, stress isn’t pleasurable. It wreaks havoc on our body, raising cortisol levels (which helps put and keep weight on), blood pressure, blood sugar, and more. But beyond that, the stress response itself often leads to more stressful situations. For example, if stress is triggered by a colleague in a business meeting, you might then go home and take that stress out on the kids or your partner. The cycle continues.

Teachers In Newtown, CT… (and around the world)
Published Thursday, January 10th, 2013
by Nick Ortner
As many of you know, we’ve been on the ground In Newtown, CT (where I live), using Tapping to help those most deeply affected.
The work is going extremely well, and I’ll be sharing a more complete update down the road, but for now, I wanted to share with you a resource we’ve put together for teachers around the world.
Jessica has created a video and tapping meditation specifically for teachers – those amazing people who have influenced, inspired, and taught all of us.
As you can imagine, they’re having a hard time with what happened…it’s a little too close to ‘home’ and this tapping meditation is our way of supporting them.
Please share with any teachers you know . Even if they’re not familiar with tapping, we explain the process and how it can help them in the video.
And even if you’re not a teacher, you might want to tap along “surrogately” for those incredible teachers out there.

Share a few words (general or specific!) about how teachers have affected you!
P.S. I had some other important resources that I wanted to share today, but I bumped them to down here to make the teacher’s message central.
1. There’s only a few days left to join Jessica and thousands of other women in their journey to weight loss and body confidence.
I keep being astonished, reading about the results that women around the world are getting and the transformations they are experiencing, not only in their bodies but in their SOULS. This is deep, powerful work.
The next session is getting started in just a week and a half and I don’t know when Jessica will be running this live again!

Newtown, CT Update
If you saw my last blog post, you know that I live in Newtown, CT and have spent the past week and a half mobilizing an effort to help the community heal from the recent tragedy. (If you missed my original blog post, you can see it here: http://www.thetappingsolution.com/blog/i-live-in-newtown-ct/)
The great news is that our efforts are already making a difference. Dr. Lori Leyden is making great progress, already working with people directly affected by the tragedy and establishing a process to help even more people. With your help, we raised another $40,000 beyond the initial $30,000 we contributed to fund this project, so THANK YOU!
When Dr. Leyden landed last week, we filmed a short video from Sandy Hook with her. It’s moving and powerful and you can watch it here (and make sure to listen to the peace, love and light meditation below the video also):

I live in Newtown, CT… (some thoughts and how you can help)
Published Monday, December 17th, 2012
by Nick Ortner
I never thought in my communication with you that the fact that I live in Newtown, CT would be relevant in any way.
Unfortunately, as you know, that all changed on Friday. My brother lives here as well, with his wife and two young children. My mother is a school psychologist in the neighboring town of Danbury, at the elementary school. She used to work with Dawn Hochsprung, the principal who lost her life, when Dawn was previously working in her school district.
I don’t feel it’s my place, especially at this point, to try to make any sense of what has happened or make any wise philosophical pronouncements (they seem trite in the wake of such awful tragedy) All I can think to do is to mobilize in any way I can, to help those most deeply affected.
I do think there is an opportunity (and that’s not the right word for this situation, but it’s the best I can come up with), to take a new approach in helping relieve the pain, trauma, and sorrow this town, surrounding towns, and the world at large is feeling. We’ll be working this week to bring you resources to help relieve any pain you’re feeling, including a meditation from Jessica.
On the ground here, I’ve been on the phone the last two days coming up with a plan on how we can best help and serve. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as going in there and saying, “Everybody tap!” It’s a delicate situation on so many levels, so I’ve been talking to trauma experts and other people with experience to see how we can best serve, while respecting the existing channels of support.
Just this morning we formed what we’re calling “The Tapping Solution for Newtown: Stress and Trauma Relief Project.” Dr. Lori Leyden, who you might recognize from her incredible work with genocide victims in Rwanda, has already agreed to fly in from California to lead the support team. That team and its approach will grow in the coming days.
Our intent behind “The Tapping Solution for Newtown: Stress and Trauma Relief Project” is to:
A. When appropriate, work with those affected, directly or indirectly, in Newtown and the surrounding areas.
B. Establish a “train the trainer” model, where both professionals and lay people can learn how to use tapping for themselves and for others.
C. Create new approaches and protocols that can be used here and then modeled in other similar circumstances.
As you can imagine, such an effort will cost money. From flying people in, to housing them, feeding them, perhaps advertising to spread the word on the support available, and so forth. To that effect, all this week we’re raising money to support these efforts. I got together with my sister, Jessica, who many of you know, and my brother Alex, who works behind the scenes running things at the Tapping Solution, and we’ve each agreed to donate $10,000 to support this work. So we’re off to a good start with $30,000 being raised to help.
Now’s where you come in!
We’d love to have your support in raising money for this very important cause. If you donate $15 today you’ll get a copy of our film “The Tapping Solution” as a special thank you gift.
If you’ve never heard of the film, you can see the trailer below. Furthermore, while I personally plan to work with people here, none of the funds raised will go to me in any way, shape or form. I’m laying this out in so much detail because it’s important for people to know what’s happening exactly. 100% of the net proceeds (after credit card fees and shipping and handling) will go to helping the people of Newtown.
Our fulfillment company, a Connecticut based company called Fulfillment Works, LLC, has agreed to donate their time on this project so additionally some of the shipping cost will go to the project as well!
Please support us by clicking on the “Contribute” button below to donate $15 (or use the blue links below to contribute additional funds)

Perhaps pass it along to a person in need, a psychologist you know, or a church, or a library that needs it. Who knows what your action to spread this positive message might do to change the future.
If you want to personally get involved in Newtown, CT…
I know many people are interested in how they can personally be of help in this situation and these efforts. If you have experience with EFT and trauma relief, or other associated projects, please contact us at Newtown@thetappingsolution.com. Please be as descriptive as possible with what you’ve done, your qualifications and how you can help, so we can organize accordingly. One of the challenges in times like these is that so many people do want to help, but we need to do it in an organized manner that best serves the population.
Also, if you are from the local area and know people in official channels, such as the Red Cross, etc., who you think might be open to learning about using EFT within their work, please let us know that as well. Again, email us at Newtown@thetappingsolution.com.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and doing whatever is the right fit for you in terms of donating and supporting this important effort.
Much love to you and your loved ones.
