November Wrap Up
I spent the afternoon of the last day of November getting up Christmas decorations. So as I prepare this post, lights are twinkling on the tree and on the fireplace mantel. And Sunday night I popped my first Christmas movie of the season into the DVD player. So yes, I am looking forward to December, but first it is time from my monthly look back at the previous month.

Giving Thanks on Thanksgiving
It’s early on Thanksgiving Day. The temperature outside hovers around 40° F, but here in my office, heat is blowing through the vent. I hold (when not typing) a mug filled with coffee and a dollop of Italian Sweet Cream, and I enjoy each sip. It is an unhurried holiday. Our dinner isn’t until later in the day as some family members have to work today so I can sit here, relaxed, and reflect on the blessings in my life.
Today is the 39th Thanksgiving I have celebrated as a follower of Christ and...

Reflecting God’s Character in Creativity
“Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”

About a decade ago, I participated in a theology study with a group of novelists. We used Wayne Grudem’s Bible Doctrine. The quote below is from Grudem’s more comprehensive study, Systematic Theology, on the subject Creation (Chapter 15, Section C. God Created the Univers...

Thank you for being a part of my life by reading my stories and by sharing them with others. Thank you for the words of encouragement you share with me via emails and Facebook and Twitter. Thanks for sharing your own stories with me. We have laughed together and we have cried together and we have prayed for one another. My life has been richer because of you, each and every one of you.

A Week of Thanksgiving
This week in America, many will celebrate a holiday known as Thanksgiving. It’s the day we stuff ourselves with turkey and dressing so that we’ll have the energy to go out to brave the Black Friday crowds. Right?
Wrong. At least the latter isn’t true for me. I have never been a Black Friday shopper. One year our oven died on Thanksgiving Day, so I had to buy a new one on Black Friday. That gave me my fill of that particular experience for a lifetime, thank you very much.
And seriously, Thanksgi...

Movie Review: Mockingjay, Part 1
Jerry and I returned a short while ago from seeing the new Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay, Part 1. I continue to be impressed by how well the filmmakers have turned this series of books into movies.
Mockingjay was my least favorite book in the series, but I liked the movie (part 1) a lot. It’s a war film, to be sure, but the characters are who make the film good.
It was kind of sad to see Philip Seymour Hoffman, to whom the finished film was dedicated. He was such a great actor and I’m so sorry...

Whatever Comes My Way
If you have been a regular reader of my blog for some length of time, you know that my favorite devotional is the updated version of Streams in the Desert by L.B. Cowman (update by Jim Reimann). This book entered my life at a time of great distress and upheaval. Day in and day out, the words I read spoke straight into my need. I wore out the paperback version I started with. Now I use the imitation leather bound version. I’ve put tabs on dozens of pages. I’ve highlighted and underlined countl...
