Your Prayers Are Changing the World

Prayer does make a difference – a life-changing, mind-blowing, earth-rattling difference. We don’t need to know how. We don’t need to know when. We just need to kneel confidently and know the tremors of a simple Jesus girl’s prayers extend far wide and far high and far deep.

Look at how our prayers the past couple of days are changing the world. I got this text message from Christine Caine last night – amazing!

A21/P31 - 31 Days of Prayer

We’ve created a 31 Days of Prayer PDF which you can print off straight from this post. Click here to view/print the daily prayers. If you are praying with us, leave a comment below.

Together we are changing the world!

I need your prayers

I want you to meet a dear friend of mine, Christine Caine, who works with the A21 Campaign to rescue victims of human trafficking. Today is Christine’s birthday and I couldn’t think of a more perfect gift then to launch a prayer campaign for her ministry.

Will you join me for the next 31 days to invest prayers that will make a powerful difference for the silenced, suffering and enslaved? Watch this video and then write out your first prayer for the work of the A21 Campaign in the comments below.

(If you’re viewing this post in an e-mail, click here to watch the video.)

Pray for Victims

Day 1: Lord, today as I pray for the A21 Campaign, the word I’m focusing on is “Protection.” God, please protect those who have been taken and are currently enslaved. Please help them. Show them a safe way of escape. Help A21 workers or trustworthy government officials find them. And then, as they escape, blind the eyes of those who would want to impede the rescue. In God’s Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Day 2: For their protection, freedom, and justice:

Psalm 82:4, Psalm 103:6, Psalm 146:7

Day 3: For their strength and salvation:

Psalm 138:7, Isaiah 40:29, Luke 19:10

Day 4: For their hope and healing:

Psalm 40:1-3, Jeremiah 30:17, Jeremiah 31:17

Day 5: Lord, today as I pray for the A21 Campaign, I’m once again focusing on “Protection.” Jesus, protect these young girls, women, boys and young men being trafficked today. Please put conviction in the hearts of those holding these dear ones hostage. Send a searing pain into the hardened hearts of these captors so that they may open their eyes and see the wrong they are doing. Bring alive their conscience and give them the courage to set free their captives. And help those being held hostage find safety in one of the A21 transition homes or another place of restoration. Protect them spiritually, physically, and emotionally as they learn to be empowered to live in freedom. In God’s Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Pray for Traffickers

Day 6: For conviction, repentance, and salvation:

Isaiah 55:7, Romans 5:6-8, Timothy 2:25

Day 7: Lord, as I pray for the A21 Campaign, the word I’m focusing on today is “Prosecution.” Help the leaders of A21 and other organizations who are working to prosecute the traffickers and strengthen the legal response to human trafficking. Please provide the right legal counsel for every victim so their voices can be heard and justice can be served. In Your Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Day 8: For criminal networks to dismantle:

Psalm 7:9, Psalm 37:17, Psalm 37:20

Day 9: For the oppressors to be arrested and prosecuted:

Isaiah 16:4, Jeremiah 22:3, Amos 5:15a

Day 10: Lord, as I pray for the A21 Campaign, I’m once again focusing on “Prosecution.” Help the A21 Campaign send a strong message with every arrest and prosecution of the sex traffickers, that this is not okay. This horrible injustice will not go unnoticed and it will not go unpunished. Give them wisdom to know how to find trustworthy officials and legal representation to send a strong warning to all those participating in the criminal acts of sex trafficking. In Your Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Pray for Governments

Day 11: For corruption to cease:

Deuteronomy 16:19, Amos 5:12, Zechariah 8:16

Day 12: For implementation of just legislation:

Proverbs 8:15, Proverbs 29:4, Nehemiah 9:13

Day 13: For discernment in forming alliances:

1 Kings 3:12, Proverbs 3:21, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Day 14: Lord Jesus, today as I pray for the A21 Campaign, I ask for justice for the innocent and freedom for the enslaved. I pause right now and stand in the midst of safety and ask for safety to be restored to those who are in danger and being abused. Lord, bring to my mind today reminders to keep praying for those who wonder if anyone is looking to help them. Please give them hope and help through our prayers. In God’s Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Pray for the Root Causes

Day 15: Against poverty:

Proverbs 14:21, Isaiah 58:7, Isaiah 61:1

Day 16: Against greed:

Joel 3:3-6, Luke 12:15, 1 Timothy 6:10a

Day 17: Against prejudice:

Genesis 1:27, Psalm 45:9, Galatians 3:28

Day 18: Lord, Jesus, as I pray for the A21 Campaign today, my heart breaks at the reality that every 30 seconds another human becomes a victim of human trafficking. This is a massive, horrible reality. I am but one person but Lord, You promise my prayers are powerful and effective. So, I stand today and ask that power and effectiveness be unleashed in the war against sex trafficking today. Help the A21 Campaign to see results like they’ve never seen in the history of their ministry today as my prayers, our prayers, do serious battle on behalf of those in desperate need. In God’s Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Pray for Global Awareness

Day 19: The reality of trafficking is unveiled:

Mark 4:22, Luke 12:2, Ephesians 5:13

Day 20: For strategies to raise awareness:

Psalm 25:4, Proverbs 3:5-6, Isaiah 55:9

Day 21: For people to be stirred to action:

Isaiah 58:6-7, James 1:22, James 2:16-17

Day 22: Lord, today as I pray for the A21 Campaign the word I’m focusing on is “Prevention.” Jesus, please help those who are raising awareness though schools, orphanages and universities to connect with those at risk. In the power of Your name, I pray today many young people will become aware of the dangers and warning signs so we can prevent trafficking before it begins. In God’s Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Pray for the Church

Day 23: For the church to awaken to the issue:

Isaiah 60:1-2, Matthew 5:13-14, Matthew 16:18

Day 24: For advocates and laborers to emerge:

Psalm 94:16, Proverbs 31:8, Matthew 9:37-38

Day 25: To unite against injustice:

Psalm 133, John 17:23, Romans 15:5

Day 26: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus… sometimes we don’t need any more powerful prayer than simply uttering Your name over and over again. Lord, I whisper Your name into the spaces of need with the A21 Campaign. Jesus, help them. Jesus, empower them. Jesus, provide for them. Jesus, protect them. Jesus, strengthen them. In God’s Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Pray for the A21 Campaign

Day 27: For divine favor:

Psalm 5:12, Psalm 90:17, Luke 2:52

Day 28: Lord, Jesus, as I pray for the A21 Campaign today, I ask specifically that a mom who is praying for her daughter she believes was taken to get good news today. I pray her daughter is found, rescued, and returned home. Lord, help the A21 Campaign workers see the fruit of their efforts today in this miraculous way. In God’s Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Day 29: For divine wisdom:

Proverbs 4:7, Proverbs 16:16, James 1:5

Day 30: For divine provision:

Deuteronomy 28:12, Psalm 111:5, 2 Corinthians 9:8

Day 31: Lord, I ask you protect Christine Caine, her staff, and her family as they work every day to prevent trafficking, protect those who have been trafficked, prosecute the traffickers, and partner with local law enforcement agencies around the world to see this injustice abolished. Today, we ask Your angel armies to surround them, guard them, and empower them to fulfill this mission. In God’s Powerful Name we pray, Amen.

Moms: Let’s Make This Pledge

I really want to be a great mom. I want to raise kids who love the Lord, are respectful, and kind, and smart, and all the other things we want for our kids.

So, I pray. I read parenting books. I teach manners, kiss the skinned knees and help the teen process her first broken heart. I plan the family dinners, the date nights, and the vacations. I keep track of who needs what and when. I set the appointments and the discipline parameters and the alarm clock so we can get up and do it all again tomorrow.

And through every minute, I am hyper aware of my frailties and faults.

My heart wants to be incredibly patient and organized and excited about reading books out loud.

But then I get tired. And overextended. And suddenly my day finds me getting snappy, losing track of all those papers sent home from school, and skipping pages to hurry to the end of the book that started off with such promise.

There is a gap between my desires and my reality.

And I bet this is true for all moms.

So, I was just wondering if we might all make a little pact together today. To not judge one another. Ever. Even when we parent differently. Even when my kids act like I never taught them manners.

Might you give me the benefit of the doubt? Just assume it’s a bad moment but this isn’t an indication of all our moments.

And then I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt when your kid messes up.

Or I hear you snap in Target and make threats to your kids that betray every good intention you had that morning. When you prayed. And read the parenting books. And taught manners, kissed skinned knees, planned the dinner, and all the other zillions of things you did so well.

Instead of judging you, I will love you.

And maybe you can love me too.

Yes, I think we moms should pledge to never judge one another. We’re all desperately trying to do this mothering thing right.

A great place to seek encouragement and community as a mom is through MOPS. I’m so grateful for all of the support that they give as an organization to moms everywhere, and I can’t wait to speak at the MOPS Conference October 17-19. Will you be there, too? Find out more information by clicking here.

And MOPS is doing a fun giveaway today right here on my blog! 2 commenters will be randomly chosen to win copies of Known & Loved: 52 Devotions from the Psalms by Caryn Rivadeneira and The Artist’s Daughter by Alexandra Kuykendall.

Bring It!

As we enter a new school year, I thought it might be a good time to encourage moms who want to have better reactions with their kids.

And just in case you aren’t feeling like mother of the year today, let me make you feel better. While I was packing lunches recently my daughter said with great urgency, “Mom, just make sure none of the food you are packing in my lunch is rotten.”

Alrighty then. A statement like that will just build your mom confidence ALL DAY LONG!

Do you ever have these little zingers that fly into your morning and sting your heart? I suspect you do. And it’s these kinds of things that can catch us off guard and start ratcheting up the tension that leads to coming unglued.

We don’t want to be unglued mamas. We don’t want to have mornings filled with unglued moments. So, today let’s think about what we do want our mornings to be filled with … love, peace, joy, sanity, kind words, and interactions with our kids that won’t be retold years later on some therapist’s couch.

Yes, that’s what we want.

But here’s the tricky part: I can’t control the unpredictable attitudes my kids are going to bring into each morning.

I can’t set my hope for a good morning on what my kids might or might not do. I must bring the attitude with which I want the morning to be filled. Just like Colossians 3:2 says, I have to set my mind on things from above … things from God.

A few years ago, my friend Angela Thomas challenged me with this “bring it” idea. We were talking about how sometimes when we show up to speak the audience seems a little lacking in energy. As a speaker, it’s really hard to step in front of an audience with very low energy. So, Angela decides what kind of energy the room needs to be filled with and she brings it as she steps on stage.

She focuses her energy on what she has control over.

She can’t control the mood of an audience any more than we can control the moods of our kids. But we can determine if a good mood is what we want as we pack lunches, sign last minute permission slips, and pile backpacks into the car, then we can make the choice to bring it.

Here are three reminders that will help us bring it:

1. Feelings are indicators not dictators.

I’m not always going to have blissful, happy feelings. I’m just not. But while my feelings may indicate I have some things to address, they don’t have to dictate a bad mood. It’s time for me to be the boss of my feelings and determine to bring the joy I want my home to be filled with today.

2. Bad moments don’t make bad mamas.

Have you ever caught yourself labeling the kind of mother you are in light of a few bad moments with your kids? “I’m not patient.” “I lose it all the time.” “I’m the most disorganized mother on the planet.”

Me too.

But these labels won’t help us bring more joy into our mornings — they’ll just bog us down. Here’s the reality … just because I have an impatient moment doesn’t mean I’m an impatient mother. We need to stop the self-condemning labels by matching each negative moment with a positive reality. Maybe I had an impatient moment when I helped with homework last night but this morning I’m bringing patience in the way I helped my daughter find something to wear.

3. Find the joy treasure.

There will be a treasure hidden in the moments you experience this morning. Look for it.

Look for the way she tucks her curls behind her ears and ties the ribbon in her hair. Look for the way he fiddles with his hat trying to look cool. Take a snapshot this morning of this joy treasure. Don’t miss it. When you find it, tuck it in your heart and let it sink deep. These are the moments that form that wellspring of joy and help us keep bringing it.

Peace, love, joy, patience, kindness—these are the things with which we want to fill our mornings. Despite the circumstances we face and the attitudes of others, it is possible to have this wonderful atmosphere — if we decide to bring it.

If you’re ready to have better reactions for the start of this school year, sign up to have my 5 day Unglued Challenge sent to your email inbox! Click here for more information.

Today, I’m giving away 5 copies of Unglued to help relieve some of those stressful mornings. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below.

Pushing Through The Impossible For Writers

I distinctly remember the day my dad brought home a typewriter. His office had gotten these new machines called ‘computers.’ Something within me stirred and went wild at the thought of possessing a typewriter.

I loved the way it could strike and fill a page of nothing and make it something.

Maybe, I could one day write a book? The thought came and delighted me until I placed my hands on the keyboard. And the only words that came to me were all the reasons I couldn’t possibly write a book.

The dream was silenced.

The same thing happened to me when the high school choir director announced we’d be doing a musical. I got so excited. I could see myself playing the lead role. Until I heard my friend practicing with bold assurance and booming accuracy. Suddenly every note I sang felt painfully hollow.

The dream was silenced.

And then in my mid-twenties I dared to tell a friend of mine I thought I might want to speak at the women’s event we were planning. Originally, I was just going to help plan the event. But the stirring to speak wouldn’t leave me. So, I gave voice to my crazy thought.

She just tilted her head and said, “No. I feel certain you aren’t supposed to speak.”

The dream was silenced.

Has this ever happened to you? Voices within remind us of all the reasons we’re incapable. Voices around us all seem more confident. And the voices of the naysayers are just flat out rude.

Oh how impossibility loves to scream into silenced dreams.

And here’s the thing about impossible: there is some part of what we’re attempting that isn’t impossible. All impossibilities have a weak spot. And that’s the exact place where we must attack.

A book might seem impossible. But writers have to start writing somewhere. There’s an article that could be written. Or in today’s world a tweet that could be crafted. Or a blog posted.

Write there. In the weak spot of impossibility.

It’s there. Ask God to show you where it is. Ask God for just enough strength to attack there. Tear it down one good decision at a time.

And soon it will be clear, inside every impossible is the word “possible”… if only we dare to see it.

A great way to push through that “impossibility” in writing is by equipping yourself with the proper training. Tackling your insecurities with the right tools. Seizing opportunities to impact an audience with your words. The Re:Write Conference will help you do just that. Re:Write is a conference that addresses the primary questions and challenges that writers are facing every day, such as:

- How do I reach and build my audience?

- What are creative, new ideas that I can start practicing as a writer?

- What are innovative ways to market my book, blog or writing?

And so much more.

I’m one of the keynotes at the event AND you’ll have a chance to win a publishing deal through a writing contest! You don’t want to miss it. Click here for more information on how to register. (Hint, hint: Use the code LYSA2013 to save $150 on your registration.)

I can’t wait to see you there!

She Challenged Me

I was feeling sorry for myself. I try not to make a habit of this. Actually, I really challenge myself to keep things in perspective, remain fairly positive, and resist all pity parties.

But sometimes I get tired.

And feel pulled in one too many directions.

You ever been there?

A few weeks ago, I was there when I met Hannah from Africa. She had saved up her money for three years to come to She Speaks. She spent four days traveling to the conference. She’d spend four more days traveling home. That’s eight days traveling for a two day conference.

As Hannah told me about these and other things she had to overcome to be with us, there wasn’t a hint of any other emotion but sheer joy.

It was her joy to wait for three years.

It was her joy to save her money.

It was her joy to travel eight days.

Why? Because it is her joy to serve Jesus. And she realizes in the face of all He has given us, our sacrifices to serve Him simply pale in comparison.

To say I was challenged by her exuberant presence and perspective is an understatement.

“Hannah, how did you press through your challenges with such a sweet confidence?” Me, the teacher, had become the student.

“It’s the cost of the call,” Hannah smiled, hugged me, and was on her way. I sat speechless.

Her words have continued to linger in my life. I’ve heard them over and over these past two weeks when I’m on the edge of feeling like something is hard or nearly impossible.

The challenges? The cost of the call.

The need to balance a lot of things? The cost of the call.

The stretching past my comfort zone? The cost of the call.

Not only have I felt challenged by the cost of the call, I’ve thought about the responsibility of the call as well. There are thousands of Hannahs that need to be reached. These Hannahs are women with spheres of influence who are desperate for the kind of Bible study teaching many of us take for granted.

So, I just started thinking about how we can help these women.

My team at Proverbs 31 Ministries is very committed to taking Jesus’ life changing truths into all the world. We want to invite you to help us. If we step up to help ease the cost of the call, I believe more women will be able to heed the call.

We have the avenues to reach these women. Just this week, we launched an online Bible study that is reaching over 22,000 women in over 120 countries. There are only 194 countries in the world! Amazing, hunh? Yes, we have the way to reach them. But we need friends who can be our financial partners to reach them.

Every gift counts. Every gift is an answer to prayer. Every gift matters.

For more information on how you can partner with some of the strategic ways Proverbs 31 Ministries is meeting these urgent needs, click here.

Thank you friend. Thank you for caring. Thank you for stepping into the cost of the call.

It’s Here… What Happens When Women Say Yes to God Devotional!

Are you struggling to hear God’s voice or discern what He’s asking of you?

I know what it’s like to want that so desperately. In my experiences as a wife, mom, and ministry leader I’ve had many moments where I felt stretched way too thin and spiritually malnourished.

What Happens When Women Say Yes to God Devotional was born out of my own desire to grow closer to God through saying “yes” to Him every day. And I’m so excited to share it with you for the very first time.

Here’s a peek into the pages of the devotional, complete with Scripture, thought, prayer, and reflection questions for the day.

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good

to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

(Genesis 50:20)

Thought for the Day: God untangled my need for approval with the challenge to live for an audience of One.

Whenever I’ve stepped out to do something I felt God calling me to do, the voices of criticism and condemnation have been there to greet me. Early on in ministry the voices were loud and cruel. “You’ll never be a speaker.” “You are not wanted.” “Look at you. Do you really think God could use someone like you?”

Sometimes I measured myself against other people. “She’s so clever. She’s so educated. She’s so connected. Who am I compared to all that?” Gradually, I shrank back. I pulled away. I put up a front of perfection with carefully crafted words and a house and kids that looked just right. Polished on the outside yet completely undone on the inside.

Eventually the Lord called my bluff. He’s good at that. I was simultaneously going through the books Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby and Victory Over the Darkness by Neil Anderson. Often I would have tears stream from my eyes while attempting to get through the lessons. But one day it was more than just tears. It was sobs pouring from a chest so heavy with burdens I thought I might literally break apart.

Down on my face, I asked God to speak to me. What I heard in reply was one simple yet life-changing question: “Will you share your story?”

“Yes, I will share my story. The good parts. The parts that are safe and tidy and acceptable.”

But safe and tidy and acceptable were not what God was looking for. He wanted the impossible.

Totally impossible.

Absolutely impossible…in my strength.

But God wouldn’t drop it. He met every one of my arguments with Scriptures about relying not on my strength but on Him.

He untangled my need for approval with the challenge to live for an audience of One. He helped me see where the voices of doubt were coming from and challenged me to consider the source. And, quite simply, He kept whispering He loved me over and over again.

The first time I shared my story was nothing but an act of absolute obedience. I kept my head down and my guard up. I expected the ladies listening to all start stoning me…especially when I got to the part about my abortion. The shame of all the abuse and rejection was nothing compared to the shame of my choice to abort my child.

I’d wept over that choice.

I’d repented.

I’d gone to God hundreds of times and asked for forgiveness.

I’d laid it down every time there was an altar call.

But nothing brought the redemption that this day brought. As I stood shaking at that podium, I shared exactly what and how God asked me to share.

And then the miracle happened.

When I finished and dared to look up at their reactions, tearstained faces were looking back at me. Mouths were whispering, “Me too. Me too.”
In that moment, I finally understood “what Satan means for evil, God can use for good.”

Seeing God use the very thing that made me feel utterly worthless to help others changed everything. I was finally breaking free from Satan’s chains of shame and could see his lies for what they were.

In that moment, I felt victorious—not in my own power, but in the Lord’s strength and ability to use all things for good. Without that decision of obedience, I would not have been able to see how God wanted to work in the lives of so many women that night.

My saying yes to God gave others the courage to say yes to Him as well. Burdens were lifted. Lives were changed. Hidden secrets were touched by grace. It’s a beautiful thing when women say yes to God. In what way is He calling you to say yes?

Dear Lord, thank You for making the impossible, possible. Thank You for taking every event in my life and using it for good. You are worthy to be praised. I want to follow Your plan for my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflect and Respond:

What has God placed on your heart to share with others?

Be intentional in encouraging someone with a compliment, positive note, or text message today. The Lord wants to use our words and actions in our own lives as well as in the lives of others.

I’m giving away 5 copies of the devotional today!

Friday Favorites: Leadership Blogs

A phrase I often use with my team is “what got us here, won’t get us there.” In other words, we always need to be reinventing, reevaluating, and choosing a posture of learning in order to get where we want to be.

As an organization.

As individual leaders.

For me, it’s important to glean insights and wisdom from other leaders so I can effectively communicate to my own team. Recently, I’ve had many opportunities to look at different leadership styles, teachings, and techniques as we transition some departments at Proverbs 31 Ministries.

It has been so beneficial to work through these changes with perspectives from leaders who are speaking with Biblical truth as their source.

And whether you’re a mom, mentor, or ministry leader, I thought it might be helpful for you to check out some of these amazing leadership blogs I like to read:

Michael Hyatt: If you’ve ever been curious about building a platform for your message, you can find a wealth of information on Michael’s blog.

He’s also joining us as a keynote at She Speaks this weekend! As is my next friend…

Emily Freeman: I bet you a latte my friend Emily wouldn’t expect her blog to be listed in the leadership category. But here’s the thing. Leaders are influencers. And Emily influences me. So, a leader she is!

Jeff Goins: Brilliant thinker. Great writer. Solid advice-giver.

And, cue the angels to sing, he’s got a new book! It’s called The In-Between. If you’ve ever felt like time waiting is time wasted, it’s because you haven’t read this message.

Brad Lomenick: I love Brad’s right-to-the-point leadership ideas.

Brad is one of the creative minds at Catalyst. I’ll be speaking at Catalyst Atlanta in October. This isn’t just a conference. It’s a leadership experience.

Today I’m giving away a mini-leadership library to one commenter. Leave a comment below to enter!

This giveaway includes:

• a signed copy of Michael Hyatt’s book, Platform.

• a signed copy of Jeff Goins’ book, The In-Between.

• a signed copy of my pastor’s book, Greater.
