Λινξ 49: Πράγματα Για Διάβασμα

1) Η πρώτη προσελήνωση, όπως περιγράφηκε από τους New York Times το 1969

Σε αυτό το καταπληκτικό ρεπορτάζ ο δημοσιογράφος της εφημερίδας περιγράφει την προσεδάφιση του «Αετού» στην επιφάνεια της σελήνης με λόγο αναλυτικό που όμως σε πολλά σημεία ξεφεύγει σε επίπεδα σχεδόν ποιητικά.

Outside their vehicle the astronauts had found a bleak world. It was just before dawn, with the sun low over the eastern horizon behind them and the chill of the long lunar nights still clinging to the boulders, small craters and hills before them.

Αριστούργημα.

Ο Νιλ Άρμστρονγκ, ο πρώτος άνθρωπος που πάτησε σε έδαφος που δεν ήταν Γη, πέθανε τις προάλλες σε ηλικία 82 ετών. Η νεκρολογία του Economist (όπως οι περισσότερες νεκρολογίες του Economist) είναι εξαιρετική.

Perhaps the most unexpected consequence of the moon flights was a transformation of attitudes towards Earth itself. Space was indeed beautiful, but it was beauty of a severe, geometrical sort. Planets and stars swept through the cosmos in obedience to Isaac Newton’s mathematical clockwork, a spectacle more likely to inspire awe than love. Earth was a magnificent contrast, a jewel hung in utter darkness, an exuberant riot of chaos and life in a haunting, abyssal emptiness. The sight had a profound effect on the astronauts, and photos of the whole Earth, which had never been seen before, nourished the nascent green movement.

2) Η πτώση του Angry Birds

Αν παρατηρήσεις τα «top grossing» apps στο App Store θα παρατηρήσεις κάτι ενδιαφέρον: Το Angry Birds δεν είναι πια #1. Στο ελληνικό App Store δεν είναι καν στο Top 10. Στο αμερικάνικο δεν είναι ούτε στα πρώτα 50. Σ’ αυτήν εδώ την ανάλυση του developer Trey Smith βρίσκεις την εξήγηση: Η εποχή των παιχνιδιών που κόστιζαν λεφτά έχει περάσει, και τώρα την πραγματική εισπρακτική επιτυχία τη γνωρίζουν τα δωρεάν παιχνίδια που προσφέρουν in-app αγορές.

A very small percentage of people buy stuff in games.  Of this small percentage you have people who will spend a LOT.  These are your die hard fans. I know, because I am one of them and won’t bat an eye spending $50 in a game I like.

3) Το αναγκαίο κράτος και το άχρηστο κράτος

Πέρα από την αυτονόητη τοποθέτηση για τη χρησιμότητα των ικανών δημοσίων υπαλλήλων (θυμήσου κι αυτό), αυτό το άρθρο του Στέφανου Κασιμάτη είναι μια ανάλυση του πώς δούλεψε η Ελληνική Αστυνομία για να συλλάβει το δράστη του βάναυσου ξυλοδαρμού της 15χρονης στην Πάρο. Η αστυνομία δεν (μπορεί να) είναι μόνο αυτοί που πετάνε χημικά σε αθώους διαδηλωτές ή οι ψηφοφόροι της Χρυσής Αυγής.

4) Η ιστορία του δολοφόνου του Empire State Building

Άλλο ένα πολύ καλογραμμένο ρεπορτάζ από τους New York Times περιγράφει τη ζωή του αλλόκοτου, μοναχικού δράστης της δολοφονικής επίθεσης έξω από το Empire State Building τις προάλλες.

He put on the same suit every morning: the Upper East Side’s own Willy Loman, dressing for a job he no longer had. He picked up his newspaper on the front stoop and walked two blocks to McDonald’s for breakfast.

Ένα ενδιαφέρον στοιχείο που έγινε γνωστό έκτοτε: Οι 9 τραυματίες στο χώρο της δολοφονίας χτυπήθηκαν όλοι από πυρά της αστυνομίας. Ο δολοφόνος πέτυχε μόνο το στόχο του.

5) Πώς λειτουργεί η βιομηχανία πατεντών του Νέιθαν Μύρβολντ

Η Intellectual Ventures, η εταιρία του ιδιοφυούς και πολυσχιδούς Νέιθαν Μύρβολντ -για τον οποίο σου έχω γράψει εδώ κι εδώ- θεωρείται λαομίσητη και κατακριτέα επειδή έχει μαζέψει περίπου 40.000 τεχνολογικές πατέντες για ένα σωρό διαφορετικά πράγματα, εμποδίζοντας έτσι οποιονδήποτε να χρησιμοποιήσει ιδέες και ανακαλύψεις που περιγράφονται από αυτές για να δημιουργήσει καινοτομικά προϊόντα. Τα πράγματα δεν είναι ακριβώς έτσι, βεβαίως. Αλλά δεν είναι και εντελώς αθώα.

Το Καλύτερο Πράγμα Που Θα Δεις Σήμερα

Ένας πιτσιρικάς κάνει ένα μικρό κοινωνικό πείραμα δείχνοντας τι είναι στ’ αλήθεια η «διασημότητα».

Η Άλλη Γνώμη Για Το TED

Όταν κάτι γίνεται πολύ μεγάλο και πετυχημένο, είναι αναπόφευκτο να αποκτήσει και διαφωνούντες. Σκεπτικιστές. Αντιπάλους. Πρόσφατα διάβασα τρία κείμενα που αναφέρονται στο TED, το ετήσιο συνέδριο όπου κουβεντιάζονται ιδέες από έξυπνους και διάσημους σε κοινό έξυπνων και διάσημων, τα οποία στρέφονται κατά μία έννοια -ή μάλλον, κατά τρεις έννοιες- εναντίον της εκδήλωσης και της σημασίας της.

Στο πρώτο, ο νεαρός Ευγένης Μορόζοφ ανασκολοπίζει το TED Book Hybrid Reality: Thriving in the Emerging Human-Technology Civilization και το ζεύγος που το έγραψε με μια κριτική γεμάτη βιτριόλι. Στη συνέχεια επεκτείνει την κριτική του και στο ίδιο το TED (ο ίδιος έχει μιλήσει στο TED Global πριν από χρόνια) γράφοντας:

Today TED is an insatiable kingpin of international meme laundering—a place where ideas, regardless of their quality, go to seek celebrity, to live in the form of videos, tweets, and now e-books. In the world of TED—or, to use their argot, in the TED “ecosystem”—books become talks, talks become memes, memes become projects, projects become talks, talks become books—and so it goes ad infinitum in the sizzling Stakhanovite cycle of memetics, until any shade of depth or nuance disappears into the virtual void. Richard Dawkins, the father of memetics, should be very proud. Perhaps he can explain how “ideas worth spreading” become “ideas no footnotes can support».

Στο δεύτερο, μια κυρία Ντέμπορα Τζέικομπς από το Forbes γράφει ότι το TED είναι η νέα Όπρα Γουίνφρι.

In essence, TED and Oprah are also mini-sitcoms. They share a similar time length of just under 20 minutes; begin with a dilemma; and show us how the characters have been looking at the dilemma. In the end, the problem is solved, a lesson is learned, and all of the loose ends are wrapped up in a tidy conclusion.

Στο τρίτο, που είναι και το χειρότερο, ο Φίλιξ Σάλμον του Reuters προσπαθεί να συνδέσει την υπόθεση του νεαρού δημοσιογράφου Τζόνα Λέρερ με το TED, υποστηρίζοντας (εντελώς αυθαίρετα, απ’ το μυαλό του), ότι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο δημοσιογραφούσε ο Λέρερ και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο δομούνται οι ομιλίες του TED έχουν κάποια συγγένεια.

Although the beneficient spirit of Malcom Gladwell hovers invisibly over most of the proceedings, these talks are far removed from any culture of journalistic ethics. The scientists don’t consider what they do at TED to be science, and the ones who make it onto the TED Talks site are the ones most willing to let TED’s curators guide them to a trite and facile narrative nirvana.

Έχω γράψει τη δικιά μου γνώμη για τέτοιου τύπου εκδηλώσεις εδώ. Διαβάζοντας αυτά τα άρθρα πιστεύω ότι οι συντάκτες τους αποδίδουν μια υπερβολική, κάπως αυθαίρετη και σχεδόν μυστικιστική αξία στο ετήσιο συνέδριο και το «brand» του, θέλοντας ο κάθε ένας να υποστηρίξει ένα συμπληρωματικό θέμα: Ο πρώτος την ποιότητα του βιβλίου που απεχθάνεται, η δεύτερη την αναλογία με μια πολύ διάσημη τηλεπερσόνα, που θα της φέρει πολλά clicks, ο τρίτος μια εντελώς αστήρικτη αναλογία με μια διάσημη υπόθεση λογοκλοπής που θα του φέρει πολλά clicks. Και στις τρεις περιπτώσεις νομίζω ότι τα συμπεράσματα είναι τραβηγμένα απ’ τα μαλλιά. Διάβασε κι εσύ όμως, δες.

 

 

163 Ταινίες Τρόμου Σε Δυόμισι Λεπτά

Αυτό που λέει. Στην πραγματικότητα είναι 190 ταινίες, αλλά ο θαρραλέος (ή όπως αλλιώς θες πες τον) που το έφτιαξε μετράει τις σειρές (πχ «Παρασκευή και 13″) ως μία ταινία.

1) Ένα update για την Ελληνική Κρίση

Ο Economist συνοψίζει το πού βρισκόμαστε αυτή τη στιγμή ως εξής:

Last week the troika was in town. Representing the IMF, the European Central Bank and the European Commission, it must judge whether Greece should receive the next €31.5 billion ($39 billion) of rescue funds, which the government will mostly spend on recapitalising the banks and paying debt interest. To qualify, Greece will have to slash its budget deficit by a total of €11.5 billion in 2013 and 2014. Failure would mean being cut off from European funds, leaving the government with no choice but to print its own currency. In effect, Greece would be out of the euro.

2) Όλα είναι fiction

Ένας συγγραφέας (αυτός) γράφει για τη διαδικασία της συγγραφής, και για το πώς όλα -ακόμα και οι βιογραφίες, και τα ιστορικά βιβλία- είναι φανταστικά, βγαλμένα απ’ τα μυαλά αυτών που τα έγραψαν σε κάποιο μεγάλο βαθμό.

When you tell yourself the story of your life, the story of your day, you edit and rewrite and weave a narrative out of a collection of random experiences and events. Your conversations are fiction. Your friends and loved ones—they are characters you have created. And your arguments with them are like meetings with an editor—please, they beseech you, you beseech them, rewrite me. You have a perception of the way things are, and you impose it on your memory, and in this way you think, in the same way that I think, that you are living something that is describable. When of course, what we actually live, what we actually experience—with our senses and our nerves—is a vast, absurd, beautiful, ridiculous chaos.

3) Όταν ο τρομοκράτης είναι λευκός, είναι αλλιώς

Τι μπορούμε να μάθουμε από την αντίδραση των Αμερικανών στην τρομοκρατική επίθεση ενός ακροδεξιού σε ένα ναό των Σιχ στο Γουισκόνσιν.

It ought to be self-evident that non-Muslims perpetrate terrorist attacks, and that a vanishingly small percentage of Muslims are terrorists, but those two truths aren’t widely appreciated in America. That doesn’t mean they won’t reassert themselves, for terrorist attacks have always been with us; the tactic has never been exclusive to a single ideology for very long; and the power the state marshals against one sort of terrorist is sure to be first to hand when another sort strikes.

4) O καινούριος δίσκος του Μπεκ είναι χάρτινος

Με τη μορφή βιβλίου. Είναι ολοκαίνουρια τραγούδια που όμως δεν διατίθενται ηχογραφημένα, αλλά μόνο ως παρτιτούρες. Τις αγοράζεις και παίζεις τη μουσική μόνος σου.

The recent book doesn’t portray him during this chapter in his life in the right light, it portrays him still as this Mercurial guy who gets mad at everybody and we never saw that with Steve. He drove us to create.

Το Έγκλημα Των Pussy Riot

Σ’ αυτό το βίντεο βλέπεις το λόγο για τον οποίο τα μέλη του ρωσικού συγκροτήματος Pussy Riot καταδικάστηκαν σε φυλάκιση δύο ετών. Αν δεν έχεις παρακολουθήσει την υπόθεση -είναι και κατακαλόκαιρο-, διάβασε μια ψύχραιμη ανάλυση της ιστορίας και της δικαστικής απόφασης εδώ.

The Church barely serves as a moral authority or source of spiritual solace. Of the seventy per cent Russians who identify themselves as Orthodox Christians, a significant part readily admit that they don’t believe in god; only a tiny number take part in parish life. The role of the Church is, instead, a pillar of Russian statehood and of a conservative order, professing many of the same virtues of quiescence favored in the Soviet era. The Church has been Putin’s loyal and reliable partner in the prosecution of Pussy Riot, as well as in his more general effort to consolidate his rule.
