Working at a local-location
De wekker gaat. Ik open mijn raam en koude lucht dringt mijn kamer binnen. Ik pak mijn telefoon om het gering van mijn wekker te snoezen. Nog 5 minuutjes.
Ik stond vanmorgen op en keek in mijn agenda terwijl ik mijn kom cornflakes opat. Vandaag ga ik werken bij een buur, “just around the corner”.
Lokaal werken bij de ondernemer bij mij in de buurt.
Hoe ben ik hierbij gekomen?
Bij Seats2meet.com/locations type ik in “S2M for locals”, om zo lokale locaties te ontdekken. Ik zie dat er 5 locaties beschikbaar zijn, waarvan 4 in Utrecht.

Ik kies voor “On top of Utrecht”. Ik meld me aan met mijn profiel dat ik op Seats2meet.com heb aangemaakt en geef aan dat ik maandag wil komen werken met de tijden die voor mij uitkomen. Vervolgens wordt mijn reservering verstuurd naar Anneke (zij is de host van “On top of Utrecht”) waarna zij mijn reservering goedkeurt. We bellen met elkaar om even te horen wat onze verwachtingen zijn en we belanden in een gesprek over wie ze is en wie ik ben. Leuk! Ik heb er zin in!
Waarom doet Anneke mee met Seats2meet for Locals?
Anneke bied haar woonkamer aan om zo jou ideeën, expertise, ervaringen en gezelligheid te ontvangen bij haar thuis. Ze doet eigenlijk mee aan een soort van Airbnb, alleen dan voor werkplekken.
Het werken in de buurt zorgt voor verbindingen van ondernemers op verschillende locaties, hele verschillende locaties kan ik je vertellen als ik ze bekijk. Elke local-locatie is uniek want het zijn woonkamers en eettafels bij mensen thuis of bureau’s die leegstaan van kleine ondernemingen.

Spreken is een ambacht
Dat spreken voor een grote groep mensen een echt ambacht is, behoeft hier geen uitleg. Onder de vele zelfstandig ondernemers in het S2M netwerk bevindt zich een groot aantal uitstekende trainers en sprekers die elkaar vaak ook nog eens scherp houden door hun kennis te delen.
Interactie en humor
Jan Willem Alphenaar is één van hen: spreker, auteur, trainer én S2M Ambassadeur van het eerste uur. Hij spreekt veel op (intern)nationale evenementen over uiteenlopende onderwerpen die allemaal voortkomen uit zijn liefde voor IT: trends & disruptie, online marketing & social media en personal branding. Jan Willem’s spreekbeurten kenmerken zich door de interactie met het publiek en zijn gevoel voor humor. How about co owning Twitter?
In the past months Twitter had to let go 9% of its employees, shut down Vine and rent out a big part of its headquarter in San Francisco. It is no secret that it is struggling, mainly when it comes to making a revenue. Despite the financial problems the platform is still largely used for discussions regarding culture and politics.
A group of people saw an unusual, but efective solution. Becoming a Co-op. Yes, you heard it right. Twitter owned by its own users. I mean, makes a lot of sense right? For this plan to become true there is a petition going on and you can sign it here.

The link between openness and connectivity
An article from allwork.space says that an study by NCN (the nonprofit center network) analysis why are workspaces operators and tenants frustrated when it comes to connection inside the workspaces. NCN created a spectrum of connectivity levels going from low to high, the thing is that most of the workspaces are in low. There is a reason that doesn’t have anything to do with engagement – the cause is when in network events there are always the same people. Eventually there is no one new to connect and engagement drops quickly.
Most of active S2M locations are found in medium or high level of engagement. The Erasmus University research have some answers on why those locations can keep on good levels of connectivity among its members. The first one is that 30% of the users in locations are usually new, they started to go to a S2M location in the last 3 months. At the same time, there are a lot of recurring users, 50% of the users have been going to S2M location for more than one year. You mix those 2 groups and you will have always new people to connect to.
Events, lunch and networking are merely a way of introducing those people and give an excuse for them to start a conversation, as starting a conversation with no pretext or context for it can be harder. Those initiatives can lead to a smoother way of starting a conversation, which can lead to connection, as the research shows:
The free coffee and lunch that are provided by most of the co-working sites further enhance the likelihood that people start a random conversation with another co-worker. These spontaneous conversations offer a breeding ground where unexpected connections are more likely to happen.
In conclusion, you can make as many events as you want, but if in the end there are always the same people showing up, the possibilities of connection will end rapidly. That’s where having an open space, where a diverse group of people can come in gets in action on favor of connections and collaborations.

Decentralizing the Website of a Movement
Hello, my name is Alex, and for my internship for my Masters degree (November – begin January) I will be helping the Permanent Future Lab decentralize their website. My research question for this internship is ‘what is the most optimal way to decentralize a website for a movement?’. I hope this research contributes to other decentralized movements that are interested in this topic.
The Permanent Future Lab (PFlab) is a publicly accessible location where all forms of new technology are shared. There are a number of PFLab locations in the Netherlands and one in Bali. These locations are open for anyone without a monetary contribution and anyone can discover, play and exchange ideas through technology or by learning from others. Examples of technology at these labs are a 3D-Printer, an EEG-Headset, paper robots and an invention kit.
I will be comparing a number of alternatives for decentralization (Zeronet, LBRY, .bit domain names, among others) and see which solution fits the Permanent Future Lab best. If no solution provides a good fit a self-made option will be considered.
I will be present at the different PFLab locations to test whether the average end-user thinks a certain method is user friendly. At the end of my internship I will present an advice rapport and publish it under a Creative Commons license.
I will be typing my advice rapport in this Google Docs file, which allows anyone to see the progress, learn from it and contribute by commenting. My university does not allow for edits to the document, the advice rapport has to be written by me completely in order to pass the internship.
