Thankful…Even in 2020

This is the time of year where many people share things they are thankful for. My church is putting together a compilation of videos from congregants sharing their gratitude for things from the year 2020. The year 2020. This is going to be a difficult one to find much gratitude for. Or maybe that’s a bad attitude.

Is it awful to feel guilty? 2020 was bad, but it wasn’t awful for me. I’ve social distanced, which has been hard, but I have my health and am provided for. There are so many out the...

Shades of Milk and Honey – A Book Review

SHADES OF MILK AND HONEY is a historical fantasy novel by Mary Robinette Kowal. Here’s a blurb from the publisher:

Shades of Milk and Honey is an intimate portrait of Jane Ellsworth, a woman ahead of her time in a world where the manipulation of glamour is considered an essential skill for a lady of quality. But despite the prevalence of magic in everyday life, other aspects of Dorchester’s society are not that different: Jane and her sister Melody’s lives still revolve around vying for the ...

Street Team – Beth Wants YOU!

A street team (aka a launch team) can be critical to a book’s success. They’re the ones who spread word about books they love, be it through social media, Goodreads/Bookbub reviews, talking in person to their friends and family, etc.

I’m looking to expand the street team for my fantasy novels. There are perks:

Free ARCs (advance reading copies) from Flame Tree PressAll (or most) pre-order incentives (this is a new one. My existing street team should be getting theirs from the first two lau...

Halloween 2020

A day early but… HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

This year, I’ll be staying indoors, porch light off. No passing out candy in this heck-scape that is 2020 (not for me, at least.) Instead, I’ll probably be eating candy and preparing for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo.) It comes but once a year…unless you do Camp NaNo, in which case it comes at least three times on the calendar.

I do have a virtual treat to pass out. If you want a spooky story, here’s a link to one: I am Invention. Enjoy!

Keep ...

The Goblets Immortal – In Bookstores!

The Goblets Immortal is in over a dozen brick and mortar Barnes & Noble stores across the US right now! Author acquaintance Rick Ellrod snapped this shot from his local B&N:

These are exciting times for me, y’all. I’ve always dreamed of having a book in a physical store like this. Thanks to Rick for snapping a shot! If you see The Goblets Immortal in a physical store, please send me a shot. I will love you forever: bethovermyer@gmail.com

In other news, as of 10/10/2020, there are 23 pr...

Book Three of The Goblets Immortal – News

Belated news: On October 5, 2020, in the wee hours of the morning, I finished draft one of book three! YAY! Months of toiling, and I am sitting on a massive load of words, y’all. First comes love, then come marriage, then comes a novel in a baby carriage. Er. *crickets* Forgive me. The hour is late.

There is still a lot of rewriting ahead of me, but I have at least until mid-January to do it. I told my editor that I’m done, and he said that there is no rush. Good. Because 100,000 words is a l...

Enola Holmes: A Short Review

Not fantasy-related in any way, but you should really give Enola Holmes a try. Not just the movie on Netflix (though the 2+ hour movie IS cute and fun and I really recommend it) but the middle grade book series by Nancy Springer.

The book follows Enola Holmes, the much-younger sister to Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Enola was always told she would do well alone, which is fitting, since her first name backward spells ALONE. And it starts to make even more sense when her mother disappears on Eno...

Book Three is Long…for Me

The Hobbit is 95,356 words long.

Book 3 is currently just over 94,000 words, and there is still a bit of plot left. With my publisher, I can go up to 120,000 words.

In the words of Remy Zero: SOMEBODY SAAAAAAVVVVVVE MEEEEEE!

As of the writing of this post, I am going back and reading what I have so far. Because I want to make sure my perspective is clear so I can give you all a slam-bang finish for the series…though, I know, book two (HOLES IN THE VEIL) hasn’t come out yet.

My sist...

Random Free Verse Poetry

The other week, I attended a free verse workshop via Zoom led by my librarian friend Victoria. For the penultimate exercise, Victoria showed us a picture of a bicycle standing before a sunlit field, shadows spilling into the foreground. We were supposed to write ten lines about it. Here’s what I came up with:

She stands alone, fielding sunlight

Like she was born of shadow and dew

Light touches, light ebbs, births and kills

The radiance of tomorrow’s yester-eve

Hungry eyes peep, op...

Happy Rosh Hashanah!

Today at sundown begins the Jewish New Year. Wishing my Jewish friends and family a very blessed and happy Rosh Hashanah!

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of solemn rest, a memorial proclaimed with blast of trumpets, a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work, and you shall present a food offering to the LORD.”

(Leviticus 23: 23–25)

Then said to them,“Go y...
