Wishing You All A Very Merry Christmas and Solstice

From all of us at bethovermyer.com — ahem, which means me and me alone — I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy Winter Solstice.

What are some of your favorite holiday traditions? For me, it has to be the newish-to-me Jolabokaflod, an Icelandic tradition that translated into “Christmas Book Flood.” On Christmas Eve, we gift books to our friends and loved ones. Then we’ll read until the wee hours, some of us eating or sipping chocolate. It’s a lovely tradition and I highly ...

Happy Birthday Bash Giveaway the Beth-Way

It’s the time of year where I celebrate my X0th orbit around the sun! (Yes, the X was on purpose. I’m not giving away ALL of my secrets, lol. Suffice it to say, it’s a big birthday.)

I also share a birthday with my sister, so we celebrated by hanging out. (I’m actually writing this in November, so I’m assuming we will have done these things. I sure hope I can convince her to watch an episode or three of Only Murders in the Building with me!)

Another way I want to celebrate is with YOU!...

Adding to the Awesome Lore of Beth’s Baking Fiascos

What did you do for Thanksgiving 2024? I went over to my sister’s and BIL’s for the day. It was nice. But that’s not exciting, is it? No. I’m sure you don’t want to hear about our conversation or how much we all ate–it was probably too much. What I bet you DO want to hear is about the Thanksgiving I tried to do everything all by myself and ruined the holiday….amiright?

So, picture this: The year is 2011. My sister had married the previous year, and a few months after, my grandpa in Illino...

Fantastic Christmas Gift Ideas for the Writers and Readers in Your Life

Hello, fellow readers and writers!

It’s almost the most “wonderful time of the year.” I’m sorry. Truly. But it is. And that means, for a lot of people around the world, it’s time to start Christmas/holiday shopping.

This year, I thought it would be fun to put together a list of gift ideas for your writer and reader friends/family/co-workers/whomever. Not that I’ve necessarily have all of these items myself (I will note which ones I do), but these all seem like fab gifts to me.

Ready?

                        and yourself (Bombadilitis)

                        – Mistaking chopsticks for magic wands

                        – Talking to trees

                        – Overactive imagination

                        – An acute longing for a place you’ve never be...

One for the Books: A Fabulous Day at an Author Fair

A picture of me sitting behind a table that displays all my books from Flame Tree Press.

Last Saturday, August 31, I had my book signing at Ritter Public Library‘s second annual author fair. It was FANTASTIC! So many people showed up to support me and fellow local authors. There were over thirty of us, I found out. 30+ local authors. Isn’t that amazing?!

A big thank you to Ritter for putting on the event and to everyone who showed up! I’m sorry that I ran out of all but two books at the end (also kind of not sorry, lol.) For those who purchased books but wanted to know about ...

The Ins and Outs of Finding and Working With a Good Small Press

A robin's egg-blue typewriter. Single sheet of paper sticking out the top. The paper says: Dear Editor (editor is struck out.)

Are you interested in working with a small press? Well, there are tons out there. Some are good, some are…not so good. But how do you find them in the first place? And if they accept your book manuscript, what happens next? Here’s a bit of advice from me, Beth. I’ve worked with several small presses and know a bit of what’s involved. Ready? Dive in!

Hunting

There are many website and newsletters out there that list small presses. Here’s a short list:

Summer’s Hot, Must-Attend Event: Book Signing, Tea-ish Giveaway, Plus Fun Freebies

A purple and yellow teacup holster complete with teacup, saucer, and spoon.

The state of things…

WIP word count: 78,000 words
Music: Regret by Mukala
Reading: The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton

What the heck is in that pic?! you might be asking. Has anyone here not heard of tea dueling? Don’t feel bad. I hadn’t heard of it until recent years. This tea holster is made with the purpose of teal dueling in mind, though it would work just fine for an emergency cup of tea on the go…provided you have access to boiling water. (Want instructions as ...
