Book Reviews: How Does a Body Go About Writing and Leaving One, Anyway?

Image of a hand gripping a pen that hovers over a piece of paper. The words: Reviews help sell books.

I’ve mentioned how much I appreciate and admire reviewers. It’s so easy for me to read a book or use a product, enjoy it but say nothing of my experience to others. Reviewers are in the trenches, sharing their thoughts with the world.

Now, I’m not a professional reviewer. I rarely write reviews for Amazon, as I’ve been led to believe authors aren’t supposed to review books on that site, but I’ve put together a guide here for those who are interested in leaving reviews but aren’t entirely ...

Researching Books: Tough, Honest Work–and I’m Ready for the Challenge!

An outline of GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING against a cheerful yellow background. A paintbrush sits in the corner of the image.

You’d think a contemporary fantasy novel (fantasy set in current modern times) wouldn’t need much research. Well, you would be wrong.

My next book, Fate’s Immortal Hands (formerly known as All They See is Dust–trust me, the new title fits better), dives into the past a few times (the 1660s, to be more precise) and it features a lot of art, art analysis, some forgery, and some theft. To write this to the best of my ability, I need to know quite a bit about these things, even if I use prec...

You might wonder why I do these preorder giveaways. There are really only two reasons, and they’re quite simple enough:

To entice people to preorder my books (preorders help authors, established and new)...

Dial E For Evil: Free Humorous Short Story–Enjoy…if thou so dares!

In a darkened wood, thin trees line a lone, misty path. The words HAHAHAHAHAH! hover over the ether, followed by...Dial E for Evil

This short story was originally published in Tales From the Boiler Room (an anthology by Mighty Quill books.) The genre? Not horror. It’s dark comedic fantasy. Enjoy!

Wanted: Alive.

That’s what the posters said in a bold twenty-point Times New Roman font. How much plainer could the message be? If Evil Overlord Crii Ba’al Kreios had wanted the young orphan dead, he would have killed him himself. But why someone so young? It hardly seemed fair.

Aragroan was just entering into his manh...

A Gathering of Random Factoids for Your Quick Reading Pleasure

The image of a cartoon lightbulb, underlined by the words

TFIW’s word count: 64,724

Greetings!

Here are a few random facts I’ve gleaned while doing research for my books. Hang onto your hats. This is gonna be interesting!

Are you seeing this?

The word “blindfold” (as a noun) originated as “blindfolder” (starting in the 1640s). The word we say now didn’t come into use as a noun until 1880.

Fits like a glove!

In Victoria...

There’s this site called Tertulia. They sell books (huzzah!) and offer a 20% discount when you preorder Tempered Glass using the code BETH. I believe the first month of Tertulia is free. After that? $25 and 20% off of all books (I assume with the correct codes.) Your first order is 50% off.

From Book to Cook: A Hot Milk Sponge Cake to Honor Little Women

The other week, I baked a cake from The Little Women Cookbook by Wini Moranville. According to the book, the cake (Hot Milk Sponge Cake on page 95) is not mentioned in the Little Women book or movie. However, sponge cake is a “quintessential nineteenth-century dessert,” and the author believe the March women would have had a recipe for such a confection. On page 96, the cake is transformed with a seedless black raspberry jam filling and a lemon whipped cream frosting.

Considering that my ...
