Writer Christmas Gift List for 2023

Wondering what to give the writer in your life for Christmas? Look no further!

Book earrings (also these ones; they’re cheaper)

You can have these earrings custom-made to bear the covers of your beloved writer’s favorite books—whether or not s/he wrote them! Last year, I bought a pair of these earrings for my sister, who isn’t a writer but loves Brandon Sanderson. I did one earring as the first Stormlight Archive book and the other as the second. My brother-in-law did books three and ...

Show Me the Muffins: A From Book to Cook “BRITTLE” Special

Earlier this week, I made muffins from this cookbook:

The Little Women Cookbook

The Blade & Bone books are loosely inspired by Louisa May Alcott’s works, so I thought this would be another nice nod. These, however, turned out really pale, but passed the “doneness” test with a toothpick.

A picture of 12 very pale muffins.

Playlist for a Fantasy Novel: Brittle

Every book I write now has a playlist. It either develops while I’m writing or I put part (or most) of it together while I’m rewriting.

My question, fellow readers: Does it every interest you when authors post a playlist? Do you listen to it while you’re reading their book? After you’re done reading it? What, in your mind, makes or breaks a good list?

Here’s one I made for BRITTLE (Blade & Bone, book 1)–Enjoy!

P.S. I would listen to these in order to get a feel for the progression of ...

I Am Invention: A Short Story

I have included an audio reading of this story above the text. I’m no good at captions at the moment, so a transcript is how I roll.

Sit back, turn up your volume, and enjoy!

From tongue, to ear, to pen, to page: I spun a story. Not any old bit of gossip and tale, mind, but such a fat piece of news, it was beyond my self-control to let it starve in the cold, cruel dark.

The particulars of such a piece of news, in hindsight, would be of no interest to you. Suffice it to say there w...

Beth’s Quick Take on Netflix’s Shadow and Bone Series 2

Netflix’s adaptation of the Shadow and Bone series/Six of Crows tie-in is now in its second season. Spoilers lie ahead, so if you haven’t read the books or if you don’t want the show spoiled (because it is *quite* different from the books), proceed with caution.

Now that I’ve got all that out of the way, let’s get on with it!

The premise of this season starts out where it left off and where it is the most similar to the books: Alina and Mal are on the run from their pasts and the peopl...

Let’s Take Another Stab at Terrific Book and Tea Pairings

Book: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

My blurb of it: This multi-threaded story of loss, longing, and searching for a better ending. Tova is the cleaner at an aquarium in Sowell, Washington. She had known much sorrow, but finds purpose and consolation in her work. Bits of her life begin to unravel and untangle as she makes the most unlikely friends: a remarkably intelligent octopus named Marcellus and a troubled man who is searching for a quick pay-out from a deadbeat dad.

5 Simple Lessons Tolkien’s The Hobbit Taught Me About Life

#1 – Wealth isn’t something you can depend on to make all your problems go away

Thorin had a whole cavern of priceless treasure, and yet, in the end, it could not save him from the fate of every man and dwarf who had come before him and would come after him. The Bible tells us that the love of money (not the money itself, but the love of it) is the root of all kinds of evil. Greed made Thorin almost lose himself, alienate his allies, and cheat those who had suffered greatly at Smaug’s han...
