Baking With Beth: Chocolate Pie
What has chocolate pie got to do with writing? Very little, in this instance. There is no chocolate in the world I created in THE GOBLETS IMMORTAL, sadly. But there are pies and tarts and the like! So, tuck in. Or, rather, put on your apron and follow me on a culinary adventure!

Unfortunately, I do not have permission to share the family recipe. It belonged to my grandma and possibly her mother before her. I originally was going to post it, but I thought the better of it, not wanting to s...

Holes in the Veil: A Reading
The follow-up to my first fantasy novel (The Goblets Immortal) has a sequel–in case you didn’t know–and it’s out now from Flame Tree Press. HUZZZAH! It’s available now in hardcover and trade paperback on sites like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books a Million, and so forth.
Thank you to everyone who pre-ordered a copy. For those of you who contacted me with you address: your incentives should be shipping next month. If you didn’t hear from me, I didn’t get your email, as I responded to every...

Happy Valentine’s Day

Is there someone special in your life that you plan on showering with gifts and attention? I have TWO someones!

and

They’ll get lots of love…but, alas, no treats. They upset Cricket’s tummy.
But if I have a secret admirer out there, please feel free to send books! HAHAHAHAHAHA! Or you could leave a review for THE GOBLETS IMMORTAL and HOLES IN THE VEIL. That would make my Valentine’s all the brighter
Keep your nose in a book,
Beth

Pre-orders and a New Bio
There are only eleven days until HOLES IN THE VEIL releases, so be sure to get your order in—if you want pre-order incentives, that is. More about that here.
Today I just wanted to share my new long bio that I wrote for Flame Tree. It’s exactly 300 words long—at least, according to my word processor it is. Ready? No? Well, watch this short “tutorial” on how NOT to write a fantasy novel first. Then read the bio
“Beth Overmyer was born and raised near Oberlin, Ohio, and she hasn’t mov...

Cookin’ With Beth: Oatmeal Pancakes/Waffles
Mm. Waffles–and pancakes! What a delicious way to break your fast in the morning. But wait. This is an author blog. What have pancakes and waffles got to do with anything fantastical or historical or writer…ical? ‘Hem.
While neither pancakes nor waffles appear in THE GOBLETS IMMORTAL books, pancakes (at least) existed in that universe. Let me explain….
GOBLETS is set in a quasi-Medieval/Georgian mash-up of a pseudo-England. And pancakes have been around since at LEAST 600 BC. They first s...

The Midnight Library and Anxious People: Two Short Book Reviews
As of this writing, I have read two books so far this year: THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY and ANXIOUS PEOPLE. Please read on for my short reviews of both.
Content/trigger warning: Suicide
THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY (Matt Haig) is about a woman who attempts to take her life but ends up in a realm outside of reality. This realm is full of books, lives where she made one different choice in each. With the help of the Midnight Library’s librarian, she must find the right alternate reality.
Wow. This book ...

2021 Goals and 2020 in Hindsight
In 2019, there was a meme going around that said something similar to the following:
1720 – There was a plague
1820 – There was a plague
1920 – Also plague
2020 – Are you ready?
It was meant as a joke. No one’s laughing now. This year’s New Year meme is a bit sadder but wiser and reads similar to the following:
“No one claim 2021 as their year. Let’s approach it carefully and quietly.”
While we don’t know what 2021 will bring, it’s still fun (and traditional) to set goals for the New Ye...
