PHIL: There you are.

MARK: Phil! What exactly is going on?

PHIL: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

MARK: It’s my first day back, and apparently everyone knows what I’m doing and they’re convinced it’s going to end with me locking myself in a supply closet, holding the coffee maker hostage!

PHIL: Oh, that. Yeah, most of us are pretty sure you’re not going to handle t...

MONK: Mark!

MARK: Hey Monk. Hey Alex. Good to see you again.

MONK: Do you know what you’re working on yet?

MARK: Not yet. Phil said HR needed to complete my transfer before they can brief me on what I’m doing next.

ALEX: Transfer?

MARK: Yeah, it’s a new Ubersoft division for some new cutting edge project. No idea what it is, though.

(MONK and ALEX exchange glances.)...

KING: Mark! You’re back!

MARK: Yup. The government contract finally ended, and now I’m just sitting around waiting to learn what they need me to do next.

KING: Hey, do you think they’ll throw you in jail?

KING: Because, you know, there was that one time you got arrested and they decided it was cheaper to keep you in jail than it was to pay your salary.

MARK: Yeah. I remem...

The Points Between Podcast, Episode One

A man drives along a lonely stretch of Virginia road, lost in the endless monotony of a yellow double-line separating his past and future. Somewhere on that road he pulls over to the side, gets out of his car, and walks through a grove of trees to find himself… somewhere else.

Three Loud Knocks

Matthew sits bolt upright, fully alert, the lingering taste of dust on his lips. Everything’s dark. Everything’s wrong.

He throws aside his bedsheets and gets out of bed, looking around frantically, trying to get his bearings. When his bare feet touch the cold hardwood floor he stops, frowns, and starts to piece everything together.

He woke up in a bed. That wasn’t wrong; he w...

0011 0101: Another Year Gone And Done, and EVERYTHING’S JUST FINE

Image by Genaro Servin, provided by Pexels.com

I turned 53 today. To be honest, I’m less concerned about that than I am about yesterday’s Supreme Court decision that essentially turned the President of the United States into a God-Emperor who can do anything he wants without any fear of legal retribution as song has he can provide the courts a tenuous tie to something he can call an “official act.” Still, I’m officially a year older today.

But here I am, a year older, and I know this site ...

DEFENSE LAWYER: Your Honor, not only do we oppose the Plaintiff’s request, we further request that we receive an expedited judgment of “Not Guilty” since it is patently obvious that the defendant is protected under the First Amendment.

JUDGE: What is going on?

DEFENSE LAWYER: It’s simple, Your Honor. My Client, Media Matters, was able to determine that X was displaying ads from...

JUDGE: It appears I have no choice in the matter but to go forward with what I’m certain will be a long and painful case that makes an utter mockery of the law.

VIKTOR SCHRECK: Not at all, Your Honor.

VIKTOR SCHRECK: In fact, I request that an expedited judgment of “guilty” be entered against the defendant, since the facts of the case are so obvious and so obviously in our favo...

BAILIFF: Hear ye, hear ye! The court will now hear the case of X vs Media Matters, the Honorable Judge–

JUDGE: –hold on a moment. There seems to be a problem with the docket.

BAILIFF: How so?

JUDGE: Well, my copy says the next case is “Non-threatening Plaintiff vs. Nondescript Defendant.”

BAILIFF: Oh, that. We altered your copy to keep you from running away.

JUDGE: Why...

VIKTOR SCHRECK: Oh, indeed. I believe he thinks waiting will be more dramatic – it gives the press more time to speculate before the actual event. But we alrea...
