The Points Between: Part Two, Chapter Seven

Absconditus

Matthew awakens to the sound of rattling in his chest.

It’s a long, drawn-out rasp, the kind that old smokers have, and it ends in a fit of coughing so intense that his lungs burn when he draws new breath. He instinctively covers his eyes with his arms, trying to keep out the sharp, piercing light of the sun. His eyes feel heavy and swollen. his eyelashes are crusty, and feel glued shut.

He groans softly, voice trailing off into a miserable croak as he quickly runs out o...

The Points Between: Part Two, Chapter Six

The Second Dance

Matthew is still on the bridge when Alice finds him. He sees her reflection in the water as she stands next to him—her actual reflection, this time, not a conjured image—and feels the pressure of her shoulder against his as she leans against the rail and gazes sadly across the water. They stand that way for a while, neither speaking as they listen to the music from the pavilion and do little else. Then, all at once, she smiles, and nudges him, ever so slightly, with her s...

The Points Between: Part Two, Chapter Five

A Warning Between Friends

In the newspaper article that reported his disappearance, Abel Morris looked very much like the archetypal coffee house musician: lean build, dark clothing, long, shoulder-length hair, and an intense, brooding expression. Very little has changed in the years since he disappeared. He is still lean, his hair still long, and while he dresses in a style similar to the other men at the Manor, the colors are still dark. He lacks the eerie, unearthly beauty that the oth...

The Points Between: Part Two, Chapter Four

Windows to the Soul

As he steps into the first courtyard Matthew feels the weight of the ever-changing passages of the hedge maze fall away, and he sighs in relief. He supposes he’ was going to have to find a way to adapt to the maze—it seems an integral part of what Simon wants to teach—but for the life of him he isn’t sure how he can. The disorientation had nearly overwhelmed him, and he’d needed to focus almost exclusively on the pressure of Simon’s steady hand on his shoulder to keep ...

A Remarkable Bird, the Norwegian Blue: Epilogue

Image by Hans Van Der Lubbe (Pexels.com)

Almost two years ago I noted that people were essentially declaring Twitter dead, and I posted about what I thought that meant. I had two predictions: a Gollum or a Ringwraith, depending on how much money it has any given time. So far it has gone the Ringwraith route. It’s now trying to get everyone to call it “X,” but to my knowledge the only people who do are Elon Musk and neo nazis.

Anyway, today is the day that Twitter is no longer part of my li...

The Points Between: Part Two, Chapter Three

The Collection

The center of the maze mirrors the entrance: a circular courtyard, though slightly smaller and with only a single entrance, ringed by torches, all lit. In the middle sits a large marble statue, taller than Matthew by half. The scene is familiar: a woman gazes into the face of a small child as the child looks up into the sky. The tapestries in the shining chapel at Bridge Street Park showed the same thing.

Matthew steps out past Simon to approach the statue, studying it c...

NARRATOR: The Green Dome.

MARK: (Standing in front of a closed door.) Well, this is “Number Two.” I guess I just ring the doorbell?

(The door opens automatically, revealing a room beyond.)

SOUND: FWISHHH

MARK: Or I wait for the Orwellian technology to open the door like the dystopian cliché this is.
