Very early the next morning, Matthew found himself standing in the motel parking lot, staring into the pre-dawn mist.

The news of the sale, his uncertainty over the status of his car, his relief at being released from the hospital, his unease over the memory of the attack—all contributed to a restlessness that made sleep next to impossible. He was full of nervous energy, and it would not be contained in the confines of his room.
