A Cord of Three Strands

Franklin Stackford steps into the circle of candles. His shadow does not flicker and does not fade.

“We have waited a long time for this, my friends…” Franklin Stackford stands tall, his shadow taller still, and he speaks like a preacher exhorting his congregation. “We have had the knowledge for some time, but never the means. Never the power. Now that means and power have ...

But the only signs of anyone having been here at all are his own—his footprints from his visit two days ago are still here, undisturbed in the dust.

Last week I tried to enable object caching on Eviscerati.Org. What is object caching, you ask? Well, there are many accurate answers to that question, but for the purpose of this site it’s “the thing I needed to enable so that WordPress would stop nagging me to enable it.” The short version: my attempts to enable object caching resulted in my database crashing at least once every 24 hours, which is not desired behavior in a database-driven webs...

Restoring from Backup

One of the disadvantages of running your own site is that you actually have to run it. That means any time something goes wrong it’s usually at least partially your fault. Last week I tried to enable object caching on my site, because WordPress had been nagging me about doing that for years. To summarize a complicated process, I screwed it up and broke things. The Points Between: Part Two, Chapter Eight

Intellectus

The creature stirs. Matthew tenses, convinced that it has detected him at last, but fear turns to relief when it sets off into the woods at a brisk pace. Matthew, not having a better plan, follows it. Twigs snap beneath Matthew’s boots, but the sound never makes it past the barrier his spell provides. Eventually they come to a well-traveled path winding between thick trunks and hanging branches. The creature walks on, without apparent fear of discovery, its head bowed as if in...
