ALICE: Hey big brother! How’s it going?

ALEX: A lot better since Viktor took the rich guy into his office. Hopefully he stays there.

ALICE: Aw… Elon isn’t so bad. He’s about to pay us a lot of money!

ALEX: Alice, I’m already providing tech support for “X,” which mostly involves sympathizing with customers who don’t understand why it isn’t still called Twitter. What more are ...

ELON MUSK (carrying FAN CLUB): We’re losing ad revenue left and right! Someone do something!

ALEX: That isn’t a tech support issue.

ELON MUSK (carrying FAN CLUB): I don’t want to hear excuses! I want to hear solutions!

MONK: Stop spreading Nazi propaganda on your social media platform?

ELON MUSK (carrying FAN CLUB): No can do. I’m a free speech absolutist.

ALEX: Also, ...

ELON MUSK (carrying FAN CLUB): I, Elon Musk, am very dissatisfied with the state of X!

MONK: You mean Twitter?

ELON MUSK (carrying FAN CLUB): X!

ALEX: Twitter.

ELON MUSK (carrying FAN CLUB): It is no longer Twitter! It is now called X!

ALEX: Everyone still calls it Twitter.

ELON MUSK (carrying FAN CLUB): I bought the company! I get to call it whatever I want! It’s c...

MONK: Hey Alex, just a heads up… I finally heard back from Management about the X contract.

ALEX: Please tell me it’s over.

ALEX: Please tell me Management realized that providing tech support to a company run by a man who insists on shooting himself repeatedly in the foot is a lost cause, and that they decided to abandon ship just like every paying customer the company has eve...

2FA or Not 2FA

Over the weekend I did a little work on the site, using a plugin that allowed my Patreon Subscribers to log into Eviscerati.Org using their Patreon account. The intent is to allow them to download specific types of Patreon rewards from here, rather than over there, because content archives on Patreon are terrible.

It mostly worked: generally speaking, thanks to a WordPress plugin, it was possible for Patreon subscribers to log into my site using their Pa...

The Return

The second floor of the tower is like the first floor, completely empty and covered in dust. The only source of ventilation and light is tiny windows set high on the walls on each floor. The dim light, the dust, and the stuffiness combine with the heat, making him reluctant to explore, but he has nothing else to do so he presses on. Each successive floor is no different from the last until...

I started Help Desk back in 1996, when I was 25. I turn 52 today, and it just hit me that I’ve spent more time being online and publishing online than I’ve spent doing pretty much anything else with my life.

I wonder what I’ll be when I grow up? There’s a fair chance the world will never know!

The Siege

It’s been years since Matthew did anything remotely resembling camping, and even on the few occasions when he technically “slept under the stars,” he did it in a tent. It seemed like roughing it at the time, but as he itches furiously from numerous mosquito bites he finds himself thinking wistfully about tents with zip flap entrances.

“Mosquitoes,” he grumbles aloud, as much to remind hi...

The Other Side

Matthew wakes up to the sensation of his new phone vibrating fiercely under his pillow. Still groggy with sleep, he gropes under his pillow, hits the power button once to stop the alarm, and drags it out to look at the time.

1:05 AM.

He sits up, unlocks the screen, and blinks a few times until he can focus on the signal strength. Two bars: not great, but it will be enough. He yaw...
