Aeschylus, James Dean, William Shatner, and Writing
When I was in college and majoring in theatre I had an opportunity to listen to a short clip of a very old recording of a performance of Oedpius Rex. When I say “very old” I mean the recording dated from just before the 1900s, and I was curious to hear what the performance what like. The actor, whose name I can’t remember, was apparently very highly regarded in his day, so it was a chance to hear one of the greats performing one of the classic works of theatre from a time that pre-dated the a...

What Oracle Wants You To Believe
Let’s start with a basic component of any language:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
You’re looking at the fundamental building blocks of a written language—a series of symbols intended to represent discrete components used to communicate ideas. We can add extra symbols into the mix, which can be used to separate and organize these components:

SF Is Better Than Every Other Genre Imaginable, Ever
This is crossposted from my Tumblr page. It has two things going for it: first, it's the most pretentious thing I've ever written about speculative fiction, and second, I stand by it 100%.
Before I begin, let me explain to you, dear reader, exactly why I am eminently qualified to talk about this, and why, based on my impeccable credentials, you should immediately agree with me and accept, uncritically, every word in this essay:

Opposing CISPA
Remember SOPA and PIPA? They're nothing compared to this.
In the name of "cyber security," and under the auspices of helping the federal government defend itself from external threats (threats outside of the United States), a new bill has been introduced to the House of Representatives called the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA.
When it comes to passing a law, doing something in the name of security is always a safer bet than doing something in the name of Intellectual P...

In Honor of International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day...
I hunted through my archives and culled some of the text I wrote from last year's NaNoWriMo. Now, technically the rule for today is "professional level quality," and I don't see this as really fitting that definition. Still! It might be entertaining, in a trainwreck sort of way.
Superhero fiction. Not the entire thing, just four parts... the equivalent of the first issue of a comic book, I suppose.
All Ye International Pixel-Stained Technopeasants, Unite!
On April 12, 2007, Howard V. Hendrix, the then-current Vice President of the Science Fiction Writer's of America (SFWA), sent a letter to the SFWA LiveJournal page that was... um... very ranty. In it, he railed against some of the things he felt was destroying the noble profession of writing. Two paragraphs particularly stand out:
