TRUMAN GRITT LOCKED the door to Whiskey Automotive and stepped into the stormy September night. Sheets of rain blurred his vision, instantly drenching his jeans and T-shirt. A slow smile crept across his face as he tipped his chin up, soaking in the shower of freedom. He made his way around the dark building and climbed the wooden stairs to the deck outside his apartment. He could have used the interior door, but after being behind bars for six long years, Truman took advantage of the small pleasures he’d missed out on, like determining his own schedule, deciding when to eat and drink, and standing in the f**king rain if he wanted to. He leaned on the rough wooden railing, ignoring the splinters of wood piercing his tattooed forearms, squinted against the wetness, and scanned the cars in the junkyard they used for parts—and he used to rid himself of frustrations. He rested his leather boot on the metal box where he kept his painting supplies. Truman didn’t have much—his old extended-cab truck, which his friend Bear Whiskey had held on to for him while he was in prison, this apartment, and a solid job, both of which were compliments of the Whiskey family. The only family he had anymore.

Emotions he didn’t want to deal with burned in his gut, causing his chest to constrict. He turned to go inside, hoping to outrun thoughts of his own f**ked-up family, whom he’d tried—and failed—to save. His cell phone rang with his brother’s ringtone, “A Beautiful Lie” by 30 Seconds to Mars.

“F**k,” he muttered, debating letting the call go to voicemail, but six months of silence from his brother was a long time. Rain pelleted his back as he pressed his palm to the door to steady himself. The ringing stopped, and he blew out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d trapped inside. The phone rang again, and he froze.

He’d just freed himself from the dredges of hell that he’d been thrown into in an effort to save his brother. He didn’t need to get wrapped up in whatever mess the drug-addicted fool had gotten himself into. The call went to voicemail, and Truman eyed the metal box containing his painting supplies. Breathing like he’d been in a fight, he wished he could paint the frustration out of his head. When the phone rang for the third time in as many minutes, the third time since he was released from prison six months ago, he reluctantly answered.

“Quincy.” He hated the way his brother’s name came out sounding like the enemy. Quincy had been just a kid when Truman went to prison. Heavy breathing filled the airwaves. The hairs on Truman’s forearms and neck stood on end. He knew fear when he heard it. He could practically taste it as he ground his teeth together.

“I need you,” his brother’s tortured voice implored.

Need me? Truman had hunted down his brother after he was released from prison, and when he’d finally found him, Quincy was so high on crack he was nearly incoherent—but it didn’t take much for f**k off to come through loud and clear. What Quincy needed was rehab, but Truman knew from his tone that wasn’t the point of the call.

Before he could respond, his brother croaked out, “It’s Mom. She’s really bad.”

Christian Romance - Beside Still Waters by Ryan Jo Summers #Christian #romance

BESIDE STILL WATERS by Ryan Jo SummersGenre: Christian Romance Publisher: SoulMate Publishing Top Journalist and corporate climber, McKayla Buchanan, is sent to a remote California mountain camp for inner-city, at-risk teens. Accustomed to political and high-society assignments, she is suddenly a fish out of water. At Camp In As Much, she meets eight hostile and distrustful teens, assorted volunteers and rescued horses—and Clay.

Clay Michaels is the man who founded Camp In As Much and made it the success it is now. His hope for the highly recommended journalist is to come and write a feature to send seeds out to form other camps like his nationwide. He never considered the reporter would turn out to be a lovely woman, or for him to have such an attraction to her.

Between McKayla’s worldly experience and Clay’s strong faith, they form a partnership to help with the endless challenges of the kids. While McKayla’s assignment is supposed to be temporary, it isn’t long before she and Clay are each wishing it could last longer. A serious situation will force McKayla to decide if she can give up her worldly ways and place her faith in the same higher source that earthy and godly Clay does.

“I know that,” Clay said softly. “But what if Will ends up the same?” He tapped one thumb on the file.

She brushed her thumbs over his fingers. “Then he will have made the same sad choices that Manny did, despite all your noble efforts and sacrifices.”

He gave her a sad smile, small and barely there, but it lit her heart up nonetheless.

“Clay, I’m so sorry for Manny and the pain he caused you and for the pain Will is causing you. I can see you think the world of these kids, all of them, and would stop at nothing for them. Maybe, between the two of us, we can make a difference for Will this time around.”

She searched his face again, eagerly looking for a spark of hopefulness. A glimmer of the calm determination she had come to expect from him. An idea struck her, fast and uncharacteristically bold.

“I’ll tell you what, when you go talk to Will about this joyriding event, and his consequences, let me go along with you,” she offered.

He cracked another sad grin. “So I’ll take it easy on him again? I think we’re past that point.”

“So do I. I was thinking more like we go as a united team effort. You know, strength in numbers.”

Capturing her hands in his palms, he pulled her off the floor and onto his lap. “I’d like that and appreciate it.” He gave her a broad smile, a true smile this time. “You have no idea how much that means to me, McKayla Buchanan. You just warmed my soul.”

Surrendering to a throbbing need that refused to be silenced, she lowered her face to his upturned lips, touching for a kiss she just knew would be delicious.

Friday Snippets is featuring Victoria Adams's Circles Divided #FridaySnippets #NA #romance

On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour - please stop and take a moment to remember the sacrifices others may - so we may live in freedom.

This week's snippet is from my NA contemporary dancer romance - Circles Divided. Book 2 of Circles Trilogy.

Scene set -Robert wasn't at school and Julie is worried about where he is.

"Hey." Robert stood in her doorway."Where the devil have you been?" She tossed her pen down. "You weren't at school.""I ditched." Robert stepped closer to her desk. "Ain't ya never ditched school?""No." She grimaced."Never?""Never."Robert shrugged. "I had stuff to do so I ditched. Why are ya yellin' at me?""You've been out for two weeks. You just get back and you skip school?" Her voice rose an octave. "What have you been doing? How many cases of beer did you throw back this time?""What's your problem?""You're my problem. You could've left a message.""I did. I left it on…." He looked on and then under her desk. Picking up a small heart-shaped notepaper, he offered it to her. "My defense. I got in late and left early.""I never saw it." She read the note.Hey Babe,God you look gorgeous when you sleep. I'd like to snuggle in beside you. Gotta go. Won't be at school.  Will try and get home early. Love, R.Before she could apologize, Robert grinned. "Ready for this? This September, I'll be attending Westland University."After bouncing around the room and saying, "Oh this is so great!" several times, Julie settled down on the edge of her bed. "Okay. Okay. Tell me everything."Robert explained that after pointing out to the Dean of Admissions that their expected donation was from illegal drug revenue, the Dean accepted his application as payment for avoiding a scandal."Mrs. Murran has agreed to pay, so it—""Oh, this is so great." Julie clapped her hands. "We can take classes together and go to lectures and stuff. Everything is finally going your way.""You and your parents got me goin' the right way. I'll never be able to thank you, but I can try." He pulled her close and pressed little kisses up her neck and along her chin.Julie trembled waiting for him to press his lips against hers. A warm glow grew inside. Her head swirled with anticipation. How long is it going to take for his mouth to reach her lips? The gentle pressure of his kiss caused her to release a soft moan. She wrapped her arms around him and with her kiss told him she loved him.

Is the love of a girl from wealthy Westland and a street punk from the slums of the Shore strong enough to surpass all that life will throw at them and forge a life together? Is Julie willing to sacrifice her childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer for the man she loves? Is Robert willing to lay down his ties to the gang in order to hold onto his new found love?
Sacrifices must be made, but will they be enough?

Awake on Garland Street - part of the Ghost Story Series by Laura Strickland #romantic #comedy

AWAKE ON GARLAND STREETpart of The Wild Rose Press' "Ghost Story Series"
by Laura Strickland
Publisher:The Wild Rose Press Genre: Romantic Comedy

Brendan O’Rourke hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep since he arrived back at the family home in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The famed Celtic fiddler’s being haunted by the ghost of his great-grandfather, Charlie, who’s bent on keeping Brendan from ruining his life with the same selfish choice he made between music and the woman he loved.

Grace Dawe was finished with Brendan O’Rourke eight years ago when he chose music over their relationship. So why can’t she look at him now without going weak in the knees? And why, when he offers everything she’s ever wanted, is she considering his welfare above her own? Not until a beautiful old tune shows them the true meaning of love will they find a way to play their own song.

How unfair could life be? Grace Dawe bit the inside of her lip so hard it brought tears to her eyes. She’d been telling herself for days—ever since she learned Brendan O’Rourke had landed back in St. John’s—she could cope with seeing him. She’d resolved that she wouldn’t avoid her usual haunts on his account, wouldn’t change her habits. And now here she stood in Fitzgerald’s facing him and wishing she could fall through the floor.

He had no right to look so good—better in fact than he had when they parted in a storm of tears and bitter recriminations eight years ago, a break that had shredded her heart. She’d put that heart back together in the intervening years—or thought she had. Yet here she stood with it bleeding in her chest.Because those intervening years had been kind to him, very kind. No longer the boy with whom she fell so wildly in love, he’d become the man she’d foreseen, his long, lanky legs clothed in a pair of faded jeans, shoulders encased in a worn leather jacket that looked soft as butter, his reddish-brown hair—full of wave—tumbling over his brow as it always had. The beard was new, but it became him. The lean cheeks, marked by long dimples when he smiled, remained the same, as did those hazel eyes, bright with intelligence and a spark of devilry, set under level brows.

Oh, heaven help her, she still wanted him. And she couldn’t let him see it. She absolutely could not let him see.

Paper Love - Book 2 of A Chicago Christmas series by Aubrey Wynne #contemporary #holidayromance

PAPER LOVEBook 2 of A Chicago Christmas seriesby Aubrey Wynne Genre: Contemporary Holiday Romance
Growing up in a Papua New Guinea mission, Joss Palmateer is a gentle soul with a unique view of life. Still adjusting to a new home in the U.S and the sudden loss of her mother, love is the last thing on her mind. Sexy physical therapist, Ben Montgomery, meets his sister’s friend and the sparks fly. He takes it as a challenge when she ignores his advances, but it’s her extraordinary inner beauty that captures his heart. With the help of a stray homing pigeon and an old origami legend, Ben sets an unwavering course of romance to win her love.

As they walked past the fountain, he stopped, swallowed, and plunged into the speech he’d planned for the last week. “Joss, I know you are hesitant to date me, and I understand your reasons. I can’t blame you but it’s also not my fault that I’m...popular.”

She opened her mouth to speak, and he gently put a finger on her lips. “Hear me out. Since I laid eyes on you that night, my world has tilted. I feel a connection to you that I’ve never felt before, and I think you feel the same.”

She took his finger in her hand. “I don’t know if I’m in a place where I can move forward with a relationship.” Her eyes held a pain that threatened to rip his chest open. He wanted to heal her, remove the hurt from her eyes now and forever.

“I know that. I’ve just finished my internship, and I’m starting a permanent position at the clinic.” He paused, stroking her cheek with the back of his finger. “Let’s take a month to get to know each other. You decide if you are staying or going back to your old life. I’ll get settled into my new job. We see each other as friends, no pressure or romance.”

“So no strings.”

“Exactly. Except I won’t be seeing anyone else. I need to prove to you that I’m not a player. Then in a month, we’ll reassess. If you are in a good place by then, we’ll make it official and start dating.” He let out a sigh. He couldn’t read her face at all.

“One month?” She looked up at him, her eyes narrowed. “You’ve thought this through, haven’t you?”

He nodded, hoping this brilliant idea didn’t backfire on him. “It’s a deal. So I’ll see you without any romantic overtures?”

He hesitated. Not kissing her over the next month would be one of the hardest things he’d ever done. “No romance starting tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“I want you to know what you may be missing. Over the next month you can think about this.” He cupped her face in his hands, brushing his lips softly against hers. Every muscle in his body jumped to attention at the touch. His desire flared, and his head dipped again, covering her lips, coaxing her to respond.

Her hands gripped his biceps, clinging to him as if she might fall. A soft sigh escaped her, and he thought he would explode. He buried his face in her shoulder, her silky hair caressing his cheek as he breathed in the scent of her. Joss had been sent to him. He would start the next phase of his life with her by his side. And he would pull her through her troubled waters. Ben gave her one more lingering kiss then pulled her hand through his arm. They walked silently toward the parking garage.

His heart thumped slow and steady as he realized he’d found love. No sweaty palms. No racing heart. No panic. It was more like an enchantment, this discovery of a person who filled him with peace and hope, who made him want to be better, be a hero for someone else. But his usual bulldozer style would not work on Joss. Exuberance and charm would bounce off her shield. Patience and determination were the key; Joss would pay attention to his actions not his words.

Just like his beating heart, slow and steady would win this race.

After 5 years what is Julie shocked to see? Circles Interlocked on My Sexy Saturday #MySexySaturday #MSS166

Welcome to the 166thweek of My Sexy Saturday. This week’s theme: My Sexy Ex

This week's 7 paragraphs is from my contemporary romance - Circles Interlocked.

Scene Set - Julie and Robert broke up and she left to pursue a career as a dancer.

Five years - Julie hadn't seen or thought about him in all that time, and now in the middle of nowhere, he stood on the beach drying off from a swim. Droplets flew as Robert shook his hair. His black mane was shorter than the last time she saw him. The wet ends dripped water on his bare, muscular shoulders. Tricia, an old high school friend once said he had the body of a male stripper - time hadn't changed that.Julie stepped back onto the beach path, transfixed by the sight of the one person she hated. Her repulsion and loathing of him ran so deep; she'd repressed all memories of him. She thought he'd loved her, and had taken a chance, opening up her heart and body to him. But instead of returning her love, he proved himself worthy of the gutter from which he'd crawled. Her body said run, but her feet refused to move as she watched a long-legged, svelte, golden blonde rise from the beach chair. She trickled her fingers down his rippled stomach. His voice floated across the sand. It was a calming sound, which had brought a smile to Julie's face when he whispered words of love and passion.Details she thought she'd long forgotten surged forward. She remembered the way his dark eyes smoldered with anger and his sly, innocent grin. His joyous laughter had made her feel the abandonment of a child frolicking in the year's first snowfall. She moved along the path, distancing herself from the lovers as the blonde undid the strings on her bathing suit top, and let it fall to the sand. With an unexpected shiver, Julie hurried along the meandering path, and returned to the cottage, and to the man she accompanied - who was nothing like her betrayer. Vincent's sad brown eyes reminded her of a basset hound's - loyal and true."Julie." She looked towards Vincent standing on the deck. "Jean-Marc's on the phone. Shall I take a message?""No, I won't make him suffer. He has few hairs left to pull out of his head." She took the cell phone and sat on a deck chair. "Hello, Jean-Marc."

Circles Interlocked - Having been betrayed by the man she assumed she was destined to be with forever; Julie Anderson slapped Robert Holiday in an angry ending to their brief love affair. Heartbroken that her love affair didn't end with the fairy tale Happily Ever After, Julie leaves town to pursue her dream of being a dancer. As fate has a curious sense of humor, eight years later, they wake up in bed together. Now it is up to love to fix what time cannot mend.Amazon Amazon - CanadaPrint
