Christian Romance - Chaos and Crab Pots by Cherime MacFarlane #christian #romance

CHAOS AND CRAB POTS by Cherime MacFarlaneGenre: Christian Romance
Matt Hite is busy hiding from God's call on his life. His mistake: answering a friend's call for help.

Aurora, Alice Ann, is running from a man who blames her for losing a chance to grab a pile of money and leave Alaska.

Their destinies collide and everything comes to a head in the tiny Western Alaskan village of Unalakleet. Death awaits one of them in the cold waters of Norton Sound, but who?

Matt hated the mission trips his parents took him on every summer but one. That year the boy learned about commercial fishing and chose a different path. Adrift since splitting with an unfaithful fiance, he is ignoring the tug he feels. His father is the Reverend, not him. Answering a friend's call for help in the Norton Sound summer crab season lands Matt in Unalakleet. The woman on the plane is pretty but has a bad attitude.

Aurora knows her name change won't matter to those in the village who know her as Alice Ann. On the way to Unalakleet to help her grandmother bring in crab, escape from her bosses son is a side benefit of the trip. Jacky is out of control, and being caught in the fallout when he goes down doesn't appeal. An arrest record won't help her career path.

Aurora; that was a name she wouldn't hear for a while. With a shake of her head, the young woman seated in the waiting area picked at the hem of her shirt. She would need to learn to respond to Alice Ann again. No one in Unalakleet would call her by the new name. To everyone out there, she was little Alice Ann, Granny Petrova’s granddaughter.

A mild snort accompanied the next thought. She wouldn’t be caught dead in the damn village, if it wasn’t for her Granny. It wasn’t Granny’s fault her daughter took up with a disreputable ex-soldier looking for a place to hide in the wilds of Alaska.

Nor was it her mother’s fault she got pregnant, four times in fact, and produced Alice Ann. But, it was her father’s fault he got bored with the little hills and myriad swamps covering the point Unalakleet sat on. Val Peters packed Grace and Alice Ann up, and went to live in Slana.

She was sure her father had a few screws loose to move out to that cold hole. Then, she amended that; a few more than the Veteran’s Administration’s initial diagnoses showed. Val Lowe Peters left a portion of his sanity in some Middle Eastern country. Slana was colder than hell. To her way of thinking, hell was cold, and it sucked all the heat out of you.

The place warmed up a little in the summer, unlike Unalakleet. The coastal town never warmed up, but the temperature never dropped below minus forty either. Anchorage was the best of both worlds. It got snow, and once in a great while in the winter, the temperature dropped to minus twenty, or twenty-five. In the summer, it could get up to a pleasant sixty-nine, or even seventy, degrees.

When it came right down to it, Aurora welcomed the opportunity to leave Anchorage. For a change, she was happy about packing her bags for the trip to Norton Sound, where she would help her Granny Petrova. To her way of thinking, hauling in crab pots beat arguing with her father. There were better things to do than dodging the old man. If she said the wrong word, the fight would begin.

Not that it was anything new for her and the old man to get into it. The arguments had become an almost daily occurrence once she had entered high school. If her Auntie Penny hadn't needed help with the kids, she would still be stuck in Slana.

It hadn't been great for her aunt when the father of her three children dropped dead of a heart attack, but she supposed the old cliché about every dark cloud had a point. It got her out of the village of Slana and away from her dad.

Aurora shouldered the duffel bag and joined the other passengers outside. They followed one of the ramp rats out to the boarding area for the aircraft on the apron.

Penny, her mother's sister, needed someone home with the kids after school, and if she hadn't got out of the house, there might have been a murder. Who did who in would have been problematical.

Join us on Oct 21st 8-10pm EASTERN as we celebrate the release of Chaos and Crab Pots, last of the Copper River Romances by Cherime MacFarlane Meet Award Winning, Best-Selling Author Cherime MacFarlane. A prolific multi-genre author, she has a broad range of interests that reflect her been there-done that life. Romance, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Paranormal, all sorts of characters and plots evolve from a vivid imagination.

I came to Alaska kicking and screaming in 1976, and I never want to leave. I cut firewood on shares for money to get through the winter. I swore I would not live above the Alaska Range because it was too cold there and wound up in the Copper River Basin where it got just a cold as Fairbanks.

My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I experienced hearing it from my in laws. Each time my husband got on the phone to Scotland after five seconds, I could hardly understand a word. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and roadie.

I live in a cabin which is slowly being surrounded by the city and wish I were further out. My two cats and Husky-Collie mix dog are happy in our little slice of heaven called Alaska. In the silence of winter dreams of people and places provide a rich pool of ideas to explore.

Blurb

In 1943, during World War Two, a British Lancaster aircraft, code-named “Kimberlite” and loaded with a billion-dollar fortune, disappears somewhere in northern Canada. An extensive fall and winter aerial search, paid for by the governments of Canada and the United States, fails to discover any sign of the Lancaster.
In 1976, 33 years later, two prospectors, working in Quebec’s boreal wilderness, discover a tiny fraction of the lost fortune. Excited, but bound by approaching winter and dangerous circumstance, the men are unable to retrieve any part of their find. During the winter both men, proud and excited, but unaware of what they really encountered, allow the word “Kimberlite” to escape in some of their boasts.
That magic word, Kimberlite – the fabulous source of all Africa’s diamonds – ignites the rest of the story.
In 1977, two geologists, working in northern Manitoba, chance upon an opportunity to go after what they believe is a real Kimberlite outcrop discovery. They are not alone; the same opportunity brings the forces of organized crime into action.
When one of the Prospectors is killed, and the other disappears after a savage beating, Canadian Government forces must be brought into action to protect the two geologists; who have now become the last remaining lead to Kimberlite.
When romance and love enter the story, a beautiful woman joins the team. Together the three are vaulted into an exciting, but clearly dangerous, path. While they research and make progress towards Kimberlite, they must endure continued threat and ruthless attacks, each designed to bring the inevitable forces of evil even closer to the prize. Even as they are constrained by this ever-present threat the trio benefit from beautiful serendipity, unpredictable paradox and enjoy their mastery over the unyielding nature of Canada’s northwoods.
The author brings his long experience in the Canadian bush to add reality to the actions of his heroes, and to the images of Canada’s north - a vast serene land of majestic solitude, mystery, adventure and challenge.

Excerpt

They stayed there in the bed for almost an hour, touching and enjoying. Then Amy rolled across Clark and slid naked out of the bed. “I’ll be back in a minute.”Clark sat up and propped up the pillows. In a few moments Amy was back. “Move over.” she said, and slid into bed beside Clark. She had a small leather pouch in her hand, she passed the pouch to Clark. “Open it.”It was a small leather pouch, tied shut with a leather thong which didn’t give easily. Clark worked his fingernails into the opening until he got it moving. When the opening admitted his fingers he tipped up the pouch and poured the contents into the flat of his hand. There were three objects; they were small, cold grey and hard. Clark recognized them instantly. “Amy!” Clark sat up straight, extending his hand, “These are diamonds!” Astonished, Clark rolled them in his hand. “Good God Amy! If these came from your Dad’s Kimberlite site, it changes everything.”

A large part of me hoped Shamus would be standing there, waiting for me to step into his arms. The logical part knew he was gone. Forcing my heart to keep beating, I reached for it and inched it out of its trap. Turning the paper over, I cast my gaze across it and gasped. It read: Thairiscint tulips agus mo chroi i dearg mé mar bhronntanais.

Excerpt: My arm trembles as I grip the cool handle of my pistol, keeping a firm grasp to ensure it doesn’t slip out of my sweaty hand. It usually stands sentry in my left nightstand to scare the nightmares away. But this isn’t a dream. The room is dark and hides the face of the man whose intent is to kill me. But I know who he is. A metallic taste fills my mouth; I want to gag. My blood drips off the blade in his hand in slow, steady beats on the carpet. My arms shake as I lift the barrel and point it in his direction. He doesn't move. His heavy breaths alert me to the meager distance between us.We’re at a stalemate.A soft glow from the lamppost just outside my window casts a sliver of light on his face. His dark, beady eyes that I have grown to know rake over my body like I'm another one of his many victims. He lifts the edges of his mouth into a smile. My heart plunges into my stomach. I know what that sinister expression means, and I think back to all the times he had looked at me like that before. I had been so blind. Before I react he lunges at me, grabbing onto my waist and twisting me to the ground. I shriek as my head slams against the bed frame. Black spots flood my vision. I squeeze my hand only to find it empty. My gun is gone. The sound of the knife clattering on the floor gives me slight hope. Not much though. He climbs up my body trying to pin my arms to the floor. I thrash my fists around, desperate to knock him off.“Get off!” I scream, pulling on his shirt and kicking him off balance. Wrapping his hands around my arms, my attacker cuts off the circulation of blood. Rug burns flare across my skin as he drags me across the carpet. He closes his hands around my neck, shutting off my air supply. I pull at his hands but it's no use; he has always been stronger than me. My pulse drums a frantic beat in my ears. The air slowly leaks out from my lungs, killing any hope I may have left. I search for the gun around the room; it may be my only savior now."Why are you doing this?" I struggle to get the words out. He squints his dark eyes. I'm wondering if there might be a chance that he will stop this madness. I am wrong."It'll be over soon, sweetheart." His hands again tighten around my neck, blocking the air from entering my lungs.

7 Paragraphs from WIP Sunrise on this week's My Sexy Saturday #MSS162 #romance

Before I start with this week's MSS - A Happy Thanksgiving to all Canadian authors, bloggers and readers.

Welcome to the 162ndweek of My Sexy Saturday. This week’s theme: Sexy in History

I don't have a historical book -yet - it's a WIP - so here is an unedited snippet from a future book called Sunrise. It is a flash fiction story. Certain words were to be used as inspiration and/or included in the story. Can you guess a couple?

J'dol yawned and stretched as the relentless rain pounded on the roof of his makeshift camp. He rubbed his face. The palms of his hands scraped against his unshaven stubble. Tossing the damp blanket aside, he rose from the night camp he'd made near the lake. The morning was dull. The clouds thick and heavy, releasing their watery cargo. To the east, the clouds darkened. The threat of a violent storm loomed.
Deciding a morning wash in the lake was useless, he loosened the leather thong that held his hair back. Tightening his long hair, he looped the strip around and tied it into a knot. He scooted up the nearby tree and grabbed his back pack from a small branch. Jumping down, he stroked his hand across the symbol of the white peacock. His sister had embroidered the symbol onto his pack as a charm to protect him. In some ancient cultures, the peacock was the symbol for the God of War. The whiteness of this bird, defined him as what he was - an outcast. He reached inside and pulled out the last of yesterday's fish and berries. He settled back under his makeshift tent, pulling as far back inside as he could to avoid being dripped on. While he ate his meagre breakfast, J'dol daydreamed about being back in Orondonto at his sister's lodge, chugging a large mug of ale and munching on fresh honey cakes. He would play Crazy Dog with the children, slipping his socks over his ears and bounding after them yapping and barking until he snagged one and tickled them until they shouted that J'dol was the best uncle ever. His nieces and nephews would have grown so since he went out on patrol six months ago. The eastern border was safe. His captain felt the defences were secure enough to allow his best warrior a brief leave. Wiping his hands on his damp leggings, J'dol stood, rolled up his blanket and slipped his sword into his scabbard then hoisted his backpack over his shoulder. Keeping the shoreline to his left, he slipped in among trees and used them a cover as he headed for home.Rain pelted his face and dribbled down his neck. He sighed. He had a hard half day's march ahead of him, but the thought of the cozy bed in the hayloft and a full stomach kept him putting one foot in front of the other. The dullness of the day was ripped in two as the storm announced its arrival. Within moments the thunder rumbled. It seemed to echo off the forest trees.Peal after peal of thunder filled the air. J'dol stopped and tilted his head. No lightning? Just thunder. He stepped out of the trees and glanced towards the western edge of the lake. A bright illumination made him turn his head and squeeze his eyes shut. That wasn't lightning. It was as if the sun had fallen from the sky and landed on Orondonto.

How did Robert and Francine's first meeting go? Circles Divided on FridaySnippets #FridaySnippets #romance #NA

This week's snippet is from my NA contemporary dancer romance - Circles Divided. Book 2 of Circles Trilogy.

Scene set - Robert returns to class at Westland Private Prep. His teacher has something planned, but Robert's not sure what's going on.

Tuesday morning, Robert wandered the hallways of Westland Private Preparatory School and stood outside the senior girl's washroom waiting for Julie to exit. To his dislike, when she did, it was with her friend and his enemy, Francine. Heather and Jennifer followed closely behind. Francine stood in front of Robert, curled her lip and sneered. "What do you want?"Ignoring her, Robert stepped closer to Julie. "What class is first period today? I'm so lost.""Calculus." Julie smiled. "And good morning to you too."Heather tapped him on the arm. "Are you back gracing our hallowed halls?""It's more like grossing out our hallowed halls." Francine crossed her arms and rolled her eyes."I see we still aren't on speakin' terms." He raised one eyebrow. She didn't turn her head. "You called me a bitch.""I only call 'em as I see 'em. See you in calc, babe." He walked towards his morning class.Julie turned to her friend. "Francine, Robert is very much part of my life. You don't have to learn to like him, just be civil."A scowl crossed Francine's face as she flicked her hair off her shoulder. "It's not possible to be civil with the uncivilized." The bell cut off Julie's reply. She turned on her heel and headed for class."Good morning class." Mr. Ross, the calculus teacher, waited while they settled. "I have a special treat for you. A pop quiz." A chorus of protests arose from the room, which Mr. Ross ignored as he handed out the papers. Robert read the first question then frowned. He'd done all the work Julie delivered will he was recuperating in the hospital, but none of this looked familiar. He scanned the question again then scratched his head. Mr. Ross stood next to his desk. "Problem?""Should I know how to do this?" Robert tapped his pen on the paper."You? Yes, you should." The teacher continued along the aisle. With his brow creased in confusion and thought, Robert settled down to work. He brainstormed how to solve the first problem and had just finished it as the bell rang. Walking to the teacher's desk with his paper in one hand, he tapped Julie's arm. "We got a free period next, right?"She nodded."Sir, can I stay here and work? I only got the first one done." He waved his test.Mr. Ross pointed to the back of the room. "Sure, pull a desk to the back and keep working."Julie placed a hand on Robert's arm. "See you at lunch?"He shrugged.

Is the love of a girl from wealthy Westland and a street punk from the slums of the Shore strong enough to surpass all that life will throw at them and forge a life together? Is Julie willing to sacrifice her childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer for the man she loves? Is Robert willing to lay down his ties to the gang in order to hold onto his new found love?

Pride. It can get in the way. It can ruin friendships. It has probably started wars. #ThursdayThoughts

On Thursdays I open my blog - to myself. My thoughts. My ramblings. My whatever.
Pride.
It can get in the way.
It can ruin friendships.
It has probably started wars.
I am always surprised when mine rears up and shows itself.
It's risen at the moment and I can't seem to shove it back down.
it's keeping me from going forward with my new book.
That's dumb and I know it.
But I can't seem to do much about it.
Think I will meditate on this tomorrow at yoga.
Pride - Be gone.

The first Wednesday is Insecure Writer's Support Group day - and I have a dumb insecurity this month #IWSG #edits

Link Back to IWSG
Insecure Writer's Support Group created by Alex J. Cavanaugh
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer's Support Group day. We share our thoughts - talk about our doubts and fears. Or we can offer a word of encouragement to others.
Co-hosts for this month are: Beverly Stowe McClure
Megan Morgan
Viola Fury
Madeline Mora-Summonte
Angela Wooldridge
Susan Gourley

Question for this month - When do you know your story is ready?

But first my insecurity.

This month is a personal issue. I just got my edits back from my new editor at my new publisher. At my previous publisher I had 2 different editors and they were terrible. Not only were they insulting and arrogant and sometimes it seemed - stupid - but as I read my earlier works I notice a ton of mistakes that I trusted them to catch.
My bad. I know. Live and learn. But they were so all- knowing and arrogant.
So now I have my new edits and I can't open the document. That critical voice created by other two editors is making me freeze. Dumb. I know. The editor even emailed me and said there isn't much that needs fixing.
So why am I being a wuss and not opening it?
I will. I have to. Under contract. Maybe that'll be enough to make me get over this.

This month's question - I have - or actually had - a really cool beta and it was her comments at the end that told me the book was ready. Unfortunately she has left writing and isn't doing beta reads anymore. So I guess I have to find a new way to know my book is ready to be sent, because with my insecurities I am pretty sure I'll never think it's ready.

Wow - Let's hope next month I'll be back to my happier self.

Historical Fiction - The White Camellia by Juliet Greenwood #historical #fiction

The White Camellia by Juliet Greenwood
Genre: Historical FictionRelease Date: 15th September 2016Publisher: Honno, the Welsh Women’s Press1909. Cornwall.  Her family ruined, Bea is forced to leave Tressillion House, and self-made business woman Sybil moves in.  Owning Tressillion is Sybil’s triumph — but now what? As the house casts its spell over her, as she starts to make friends in the village despite herself, will Sybil be able to build a new life here, or will hatred always rule her heart?

Bea finds herself in London, responsible for her mother and sister’s security. Her only hope
is to marry Jonathon, the new heir. Desperate for options, she stumbles into the White Camellia tearoom, a gathering place for the growing suffrage movement. For Bea it’s life-changing, can she pursue her ambition if it will heap further scandal on the family? Will she risk arrest or worse?

When those very dangers send Bea and her White Camellia friends back to Cornwall, the two women must finally confront each other and Tresillion’s long buried secrets.
EXTRACT Cornwall, 1909It had not changed.                Sybil stepped to the very edge of the cliff and gazed down at the rambling old house below her, topped with a maze of chimneys, a crumbling reminder of its Jacobean finery.                There was no finery left in Tressillion House, she thought grimly. Even from this distance, the place held an air of ruin and abandonment. No smoke rose up through the chill morning from warm fires within. No bustle of servants, no carriage waiting to take the ladies on their rounds of visits and charitable works in the neighbouring village of Porth Levant. Not even Hector, the stallion, steaming in the frosted morning, taking the master of the house on an inspection of the mine, just visible on the next headland.                This was what she had set in motion, all those years ago. The perfect revenge.                 Sybil shivered. She unwound the scarf from her head and breathed in deeply the salt blowing in from the sea, her eyes following the North Cornish coast as it vanished into the distance in the crash of spray against rocks. The wind tugged at her, loosening her curls from the silver clasp at the base of her neck, sending tendrils of brown hair in a wild dance around her face. Sybil turned back to the house below. She had dreamed of this for so long. The moment she would have Tressillion House helpless at her feet. When the Tressillions − who had once had more than they could ever need, but had not thought twice about taking the last hope from people with nothing − would be destroyed, the survivors learning what it was like to be totally dependent on others. Was this how revenge felt? Sybil hugged herself, pulling the folds of her coat around her, bent almost double by the grief coiling deep in her belly. 'Beautiful, isn’t it?'Sybil straightened, banishing any emotion from her face. 'Indeed.' She turned to meet the square, squat little man emerging from the smart new Ford automobile, one hand struggling to keep his hat on his head. 'The best view of Tressillion House,' he remarked. 'You can see, Miss Ravensdale, just what an exceptional property this is. There’s none finer this side of Truro.''So I see, Mr Roach,' she replied, almost managing to banish any hint of irony. On their first meeting, the solicitor had made obvious his contempt at a spinster, not in the first flush of youth, daring to invade his offices in broad daylight for all the respectable citizens of St Ives to see. He had changed his tune a little too quickly at the sight of her gleaming new Chevrolet, shipped all the way from New York, and speaking more of true wealth than any flash of diamonds. Tressillion House had proved a more than usually difficult properly to dispose of, and there were impatient creditors snapping at Mr Roach’s heels. She must have seemed like a miracle, a rich hotelier from America dreaming of owning a property in Cornwall. Who else, the gleam in Roach’s eyes declared, would be fool enough to live in an isolated mansion fallen on hard times, with the rollers of the North Cornwall coast clawing at the rocks on wild nights, and ghosts creaking amongst its rafters?Sybil replaced the scarf around her head. 'Shall we go?'

ABOUT JULIET GREENWOOD
Juliet Greenwood is the author of two previous historical novels for Honno Press, both of which reached #4 and #5 in the UK Amazon Kindle store. ‘Eden’s Garden’ was a finalist for ‘The People’s Book Prize’. ‘We That are Left’ was completed with a Literature Wales Writers’ Bursary, and was Welsh Book of the month for Waterstones Wales, The Welsh Books Council and the National Museum of Wales. It was also chosen by the ‘Country Wives’ website as one of their top ten ‘riveting reads’ of 2014, was one of the top ten reads of the year for the ‘Word by Word’ blog, and a Netmums top summer read for 2014. Juliet’s grandmother worked as a cook in a big country house, leaving Juliet with a passion for history, and in particular for the experiences of women, which are often overlooked or forgotten. Juliet trained as a photographer when working in London, before returning to live in a traditional cottage in Snowdonia. She loves gardening and walking, and trying out old recipes her grandmother might have used, along with exploring the upstairs and downstairs of old country houses.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/juliet.green...Twitter: https://twitter.com/julietgreenwoodGoodreads Author Page: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...Google+ https://plus.google.com/u/0/105731636...Blog: https://suffrageladiestearoom.com/Website: http://www.julietgreenwood.co.uk/
