Book Detectives!

Hello Folks,

I was looking in Waterstones with my mum today, who was handing over book after book to me as the bank of LK was buying her birthday present(s) when I saw a book I really fancied buying. So I thought, I'll buy it later on my Kindle. Problem is, I can't remember what it was called and who it was by which is as useful as a chocolate teapot. So I was wondering if anyone out there knew what it was from the vague description I am about to give.

It's a historical detective set in the 12th century featuring a female doctor - the cover is red and I think the author's surname begins with a 'C' - any ideas? Please let me know if you do know!

In other news, I've had the lurgy which is not great when you are trying to reach the end of the novel you are trying to write. As I tend to take influence from my life in the things that I write, my character is about to catch a stinking cold, spend about two days in bed feeling sorry for himself whilst procrastinating to Hamlet levels. Not a great place to be when you are on the run trying to prove your innocence but when you've got a cold, you can get away with murder...

Meanwhile, if you want a good ghost story to read, check out Haunting Grace (Beyond Time, #1) by Elizabeth Marshall by Elizabeth Marshall, a great little spooky offering for Halloween.

Happy reading, sniff.

Distributing Derby

Hello Folks,

I've just been looking at using Smashwords as well as publishing on Amazon and I was wondering what other writers' experiences were of using the site. Of course there is the benefit of getting your work out in an epub format and making it available through ibooks and Barnes and Noble but I was curious to ask before I upload. There is also the new Google ebook site and also thought about creating an account on there, any reader's experiences of using the site?

It also got me to thinking about getting the UK market to catch up with the US in terms of ebook distribution for the indie author. If you reside in the UK then the first port of call appears to be Amazon but I wondered if there were any other UK based sites similar to Smashwords or whether it was time that one was created! What do other readers and writers think?

Anyway, hope you are all enjoying your writing and reading and having a good week. There's definitely a nip in the air now that Halloween and Bonfire Night are on their way, time for to put the heating on and for a ghost story!

What a Week!

Hello Folks,

It's been quite a week for me and I've not had a great deal of time to get on Good Reads. I had a job interview on Wednesday and for the type of job I do, it takes a lot of preparation and the interview day itself lasted all day. Never mind though, I was up against tough competition but I won and I was offered the job, which means that I can carry on paying the rent and eating so I can continue with the important job of writing!

It did mean that I was drawn away from writing my new novel for a couple of days and I hate it when I don't get my 1000 words in but never mind, needs must and I was soon back into it again. It is a crime novel/thriller type thing that is set mostly in the East of England where a cop finds himself on the wrong side of the law and has to go on the run...

It'll need a lot more work but I think at 65k I'm definitely on the way to seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Meanwhile, I need to chase my graphic designer for the cover of my full length novel that I'm planning on releasing in November time, all these things that can distract you.

Reading wise, I've got Haunting Grace (Beyond Time, #1) by Elizabeth Marshall by Elizabeth Marshall on my Kindle ready to read and still ploughing through the Game of Thrones series with A Storm of Swords 2 Blood and Gold (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3) by George R.R. Martin

Happy reading!

The Listening Post

Hello All,

The Listening Post by L K Jay A fairly quick one from me this evening. Well I launched my new ghost story novella 'The Listening Post' and so far, it has made a steady climb up the UK Amazon charts.

It's a ghost story set in a lighthouse in World War 2 and a radio operator picks up a bit more than Morse code on his radio...

Here's the links to the story on both UK and US Amazon sites, happy reading and perhaps you could save it for a chilly Halloween evening...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Listening...

http://www.amazon.com/The-Listening-P...

Now, I'm having a problem attaching the story to my author's page, hence why I am reading my own novel! I'm waiting for the two author pages to be merged.

Shameless Self Publicity

Hello readers,

Today I was at a taekwondo training session and my kind instructor offered to put a link to my Amazon page on his website, for which I was most grateful as he has a massive school with over a 1000 students. Well you can't say better than that. Someone did call me a shameless slattern as a result but you know what? I have no morals and I need the publicity!

Joking aside, this is what I have been thinking about this week, how to get your story out there so people know and are inclined to buy it. I seems to me that this is a process that is going to take time, of course I'm on the social media sites promoting away but then again, so are a lot of people so what can you do about it? I think is it about building relationships with people, not just sending them a link but getting to know them, sharing stories and making new friends. Then you get to meet some great people and the magic word of mouth starts to work.

Also, being a bit organised and putting word out before you launch, this is what I'm doing now which I hope generates more hits than just putting it on Amazon and hoping for the best.

So if you are lurking around the web on Wednesday 28th September and just happen to be on Amazon, check out my new story THE LISTENING POST - see, shameless!

And while you're at it, check out the video for Elizabeth Marshall and her novel When Fate Dictates by Elizabeth Marshall it is really good. I want to know how to make one like that.

Also, vote for Julia Hughes in the YA Debuts 2011 for her novel A Ripple in Time - Angel of the Titanic (Celtic Cousins' adventures) by Julia Hughes as it is worth both a read and a click.

Have a good weekend folks,

L K Jay

The Small Matter of an Apostrophe

Good afternoon readers!

This afternoon I've been writing, editing and pondering on the apostrophe.

I've been editing and formatting my forthcoming novel THE GHOSTHUNTER'S CLUB and I need to tell my graphic designer the exact wording for the front cover. Now, please comment below your thoughts but should I use an apostrophe or not? I had an actual debate with a colleague at work about this and neither of us can make up our minds. As far as I can see, there is one club but many hunters seeking ghosts, therefore it needs an apostrophe before the s but my colleague thinks I could do without the troublesome little mark as it would look better on the cover. What do other people think? Answers below please!

In other news, I am going to release my ghost story THE LISTENING POST at the end of September, so look out for that. I've been bashing away on my laptop and progress on a thriller I am writing is going well. It is about a policeman who is being set up for a crime he didn't commit and has to go on the run. I've got a great source of information via a friend of mine who is a police officer, it also helps that he is quite handsome he he!

Reading wise, check out Julia Hughes novel A Ripple in Time - Angel of the Titanic that is my current read on my Kindle, a great exploration regarding what happens when we mess with the time line.

Have a good Sunday, I'm having roast chicken!

I've penetrated America!

Hello Good Reads and welcome to my new blog.

I've only just discovered this site and what a find it is, books gallore and a place to talk to other writers as well.

Well I've just been made a Good Read author as I have just published one of my stories onto Amazon, so technially I am, just. There are more stories to come though and in a couple of weeks I will be uploading a ghost story novella called THE LISTENING POST in time for Halloween.

So far, sales have been steady and I have sold two, yes two! copies of my story in America, which means technically, I have made it.

I have also met some great people on here but especially
Julia Hughes whose book A Ripple in Time - Angel of the Titanic is well worth a download on your Kindle and also Christy English who has an impressive array of historical novels. Check them out.

Anyway, a joke and a shameless plug.
Barman: "Sorry, we don't serve time travellers here."
A time traveller entered a bar.

Groan. But it is the theme of my story TWO PENNY BLUE which you can buy to download from Amazon. Two Penny Blue

Cheers folks and until next time.
