Bringing Author's Korner back!

I've been very lucky with my writing career. Meeting the right people at just the right time. Their advice, guidance, and support has been instrumental in Haunted Moon reaching the #1 spot on Amazon's Children Short Stories list... Squee!!
I am blessed, and so thankful!

But, my god! There are SO many talented authors out there NOT getting the attention, both they and their stories so richly deserve. So... I've decided to restart a feature that I used to do called, Author's Korner. It was really popular, and I am hoping that it will be again!

It all starts on Wednesday, September 19, 2012!!
If you are an author that would like to be featured on Author's Korner please email me at: kymberleeburksmiller@yahoo.com
As always,
Until next time (tomorrow... LOL!),

My review of Crossroads by Mary Ting

Claudia Emerson has a good friend who shares the same first name and last name. That friend unfortunately dies in a tragic accident during homecoming dance. Claudia is distraught at the loss of herfriend, but is even more disturbed by her dreams, which seem to take her to another place called  Crossroads. Unknown to her, Crossroads is like a second heaven, a place between heaven and earth. It is where the souls of humans in comas or near death experiences may wander. Where, Claudia meets Michael, a nephilim, a half angel, half human, whom she often meets in her dreams. It turns out that this isn't her first visit to Crossroads, which is an enigma for no human can ever travel there until Claudia.

Now the fallen and demons are after her, suspecting she must be special and it is up to Michael and the
other nephilims to protect her. Her dream becomes a nightmare as more secrets are revealed, about who
she really is, and the true identities of the people she loves most. Can Michael fight his growing feelings
for Claudia and protect her as a guardian angel should?

My Review 5 Triple Goddess MoonsI'm positive that someone should have warned me to have my tissues ready for this impressive read, but forgot. I absolutely loved this book. Claudia's character is well developed, as were the others. The story is unique and fresh, and kept me on the edge of my seat! I could hand this book over to my nieces and know that I approved of their reading choice. But, for me personally, what sold this book was the fact that Claudia could totally be the girl next door, your sister, your bestie, your daughter or in my case... one of my nieces! Seriously HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Grab your copy today from the links listed below!

Phoenix Rising (Maggie Henning & The Realm: book 1)Synopsis
“…And I believe you do not have the control over your fire yet to destroy us all.”  He was calling my bluff. Worse, he was right.
Phoenix Rising is a first person story revolving around sixteen year old Maggie Henning. Maggie lives with her mother and has spent the previous ten years of her life wearing a label- daughter of the murderer John Henning. Her father resides at Sunnybrook Psychiatric Hospital, having been convicted of killing eight people inside of a local church, burning them alive. Or so Maggie has always been told. Maggie’s world begins to change after finding a letter addressed to her from the psychiatric hospital that offers an ominous warning. She ignores the letter, waving it off as some random nut sending her mail.Having to endure visits with her father, per her mother’s request, has left Maggie feeling isolated and alone, with exception to her one friend, Stephanie; daughter of her father’s deceased law partner. In an effort to cheer Maggie up, Stephanie and she take in a little “retail therapy” at the local mall.Maggie finds herself drawn into a music store she doesn’t normally go in to, drawn by a melody played by a mysterious raven haired guy that apparently alarms Maggie’s friend.Following an argument, Maggie is abandoned at the shopping center to walk home, only to spot the mystery man again, riding a motorcycle, who offers her a ride home. Maggie isn’t normally that reckless, but she decides to throw caution to the wing and take him up on the offer. The stage is set after a visit to her see her father, normally in a fairly catatonic state, comes aware, giving Maggie the same warning as the letter she received. Creatures, called “revenants” want Maggie’s blood. Just when Maggie had felt optimistic about her father, the hopes were dashed. But, she had seen strange things; bones, pointed teeth, rotting flesh…The drive home reveals that Maggie’s mother is NOT what she seemed to be and after she’s attacked, the mystery guy, named Michel, arrives and rescues Maggie from one of these creatures.Maggie is taken to “The Trust”, a manor house that offers protection to beings from “The Realm”- another world that lives right below the surface of the Mortal one. Maggie begins to learn of this strange world and the creatures that inhabit it, including a young witch with much to live up to named Autumn, a light hearted fairy named Seatha, and two Vampire Princes of The Realm, one of which is Michel. Michel is kind and level headed. Luc, his brother, is a smart ass and calls things as he sees them. The two brothers tend to be opposites of each other in most things, with exceptions to their kingdom and now, Maggie.Maggie meets Liam at The Trust, learning that the crazy board game eating man from the asylum is really her grandfather. Liam explains The Realm, offering guidance, and more importantly, informs Maggie of what she really is- the last of a race of beings called “Phoenixes”, creatures who have the ability to call fire and use it as they wish. The revenants, led by a creature named Ossa, will stop at nothing to get Maggie; needing her blood to bring them to full power.Maggie must not only come to believe in all that she has heard, including that she’s one of these mythical creatures from stories, but also learn how to wield her power to face the creatures that would destroy both worlds Maggie has come to know of. All of this, even as she begins to feel more than mere friendship with one of the Princes…Stalker LinksFacebook FanpageGoodreadsTwitterGetGlueWhat's Circling CelineWebsite

My review of Creatura by Nely Cab

When seventeen year-old Isis Martin is having trouble sleeping due to perturbing dreams of a horrific growling beast, she decides to confront her fear. But what Isis discovers is something other than a menacing entity. The human-like creature offers Isis assurance that he is not a figment of herimagination. Unwilling to accept his avowal, Isis sets his words to contest by asking the entity to provehimself - a dare, he readily welcomes. It is in her dreams that Isis innocently stumbles upon the silentexistence of the divine lineage of those that man has long forgotten. In a quaint town, deep in southTexas, this story leads Isis onto the path of impermissible love and captivating life-changing truths.Ultimately, Isis discovers that this chapter in her life is only the beginning.
My Review 5 Triple Goddess MoonsWow. Just wow... where do I start? Creatura grabbed my attention immediately and held it hostage till the last word. And, that's a very hard feat! This story is new and fresh. In a market saturated with Angels, Vampires, and Wulven- Creatura has made its mark on the young adult community. Nely Cab's writing style is unique. She opens up her YA audience to a large vocabulary, something that greatly pleases me. The characters are very well thought out and developed, the plot offers intricate twists and turns to leave the reader panting for more. David Chios is by far my favorite fictional male character. I just love him!Great job, Nely! Anxiously awaiting book 2.

My review of The Conduit by Stacey Rourke

BlurbAll 18-year-old Celeste Garrett wants is to head off to college and make those fun, yet ill-advised, choices college kids are known for. And maybe to spend some time with the hot cameraman she just met. Instead, because of a pact her ancestors made in the 17th century with a mythical creature, she has to save the world.
While normal kids are slamming energy drinks and cramming for exams, Celeste will get her adrenaline rush fighting a fire breathing dragon. She wants to meet friends in the quad to exchange lecture notes, but first she must exchange blows with a shapeshifting demon on the rooftop. Life isn't always fair for a superhero, but at least she doesn't have to do it alone. With her brother and sister as sidekicks, they alternate between saving lives and getting on each others' nerves. Together the trio encounters unspeakable odds, mystical forces and comes face-to-face with an image that will haunt them forever-- their grandmother in a leopard print bikini.
Okay, little side note here. If a psychopathic killer asks if you want to see a trick, say no. That's the smart thing to do. I, on the other hand, responded, "Bring it."-excerpt from THE CONDUIT

My Review 5 Triple Goddess MoonsIt's been a minute since I've read something that literally made me laugh out loud! Stacey's writing style is very easy to follow. I absolutely adore this book! The fact that this author stepped outside of the box, making Gryphons COOL!! Gram, is by far my favorite character. She is witty, crazy and super-lovable. The cliff-hanger was well written, and will have you hanging on every last word! If you haven't read this book, you're missing out on a total jem!

Rising Phoenix by Lisa C. Morgan Blog Tour Stop

Tempting Blog Tours PresentsPhoenix RisingbyLisa C. Morgan
Check out this rockin' interview with the Author!

1. Can you tell us a little bit about "Phoenix Rising"?
Phoenix Rising is the first book in my YA series Maggie Henning and The Realm. In this first book, we meet Maggie, a 16 year old girl living in a small Upstate NY town and under the shadow of her father. Her father was sentence to serve life in a psychiatric hospital after firebombing a church and killing the 8 people inside. Maggie receives a strange letter in the mail, offering her a warning to “guard the blood”. Seeing the return address as the psychiatric hospital, Maggie sets it aside and chalks it up to some sort of mad ravings.  Maggie receives the same warning during a visit with her father and it’s after that verbal warning Maggie begins to see strange visions. People change- their once normal faces look to be rotted flesh or bones, mouths full of pointed teeth. These are creatures called Revenants, and they have been waging a war with The Realm, beings that live parallel to our own world, a world Maggie never knew existed. Maggie is the last of an ancient race of Phoenixes, beings with the ability to control fire, and the revenant leader Ossa needs Maggie’s blood to “cure” him and his followers and rise to control both The Realm & The Mortal worlds. Maggie must learn what she is and who to trust, what her destiny is, and to fight to save creatures of myth and legend.

2. What's your background with writing?
I have been writing for as long as I could hold a crayon in my hand! I grew up in a small town, the daughter of a nurse and a house painter, so as you can imagine, money was pretty much always nonexistent. I learned at an early age that books, and the fantastic stories within the pages, were a great way to escape everyday life- a little vacation of sorts. I used to write poetry, and still do from time to time. I have tons of notebooks, full of stories.  I have always been drawn to fantasy and paranormal genres, seeking out the strange new worlds and beings only found in places like Tatooine or The Shire.

3. Who are your inspirations/influences?My mother and grandmother were always my biggest supporters. They were avid readers themselves, as well as my go to folks when I was seeking a creative word. My eighth grade teacher, Mr. Knodel, would be the driving force though. As our final exam that year, he assigned us to write a 1,000 word story about anything we chose and he gave us one weekend to do so. The following Monday, while my classmates were turning in their tales, I handed in a typed story about a plantation owner’s daughter who falls in love with a slave… and it came in at almost two dozen pages. After reading my story, Mr. Knodel asked me to stay after class. He asked me to always carry a notebook and writing utensil with me, where ever I went, and told me “you have stories to tell that people will want to read.” That advice always stuck with me, and I followed it. Even to this day. Phoenix Rising is dedicated to him.

4. What was it like working with Firefly & Wisp Publishing?
Firefly & Wisp has been fantastic! Today, the YA market is simply flooded with all sorts of books, and I knew early on the odds of getting my story published were slim because of that. The attention I’ve received from FF&W has been sensational! It’s a small company and all of the authors are more like family to me than merely fellow authors or coworkers. They have been supportive of my whole process from signing the contract, to cover art, to editing, to finally seeing Phoenix Rising out for sale. I’m not sure how the huge publishing houses do it, but I bet they could learn a thing or two from Firefly & Wisp. It’s been a sensational experience!

5. Who was responsible for the cover/book design?
I actually designed the cover for Phoenix Rising! I had a vision of what I’d love to see there and was fortunate enough to make that vision a reality.

6. Do you have any stories from book signings/radio interviews/etc...?
As I’m still new to this, I haven’t had any of these for my own books. However, this past April, I drove over 10 hours to Cincinnati, Ohio to attend a book signing that JR Ward (The Black Dagger Brotherhood book series) held. When I finally reached the table where she was signing, a friend with me asked how her arm was doing. Ms. Ward commented that her shoulder was getting a little sore (she was on signing #350 by that point.) I remarked that I’d driven the 10 plus hours for her signing. Ward laughed and replied, “So you’re probably saying ‘to hell with you b*tch! I can’t feel my ass!’” It was in jest, but I immediately went fan girl and responded ‘Oh no! Never! I don’t need to feel my ass to see you!” The line laughed at me, as I realized exactly how loud my voice really was!

7. What is the name of your blog and what can readers expect to find there?
I have a small blog on my website (http://maggiehenningandtherealm.weebly.com )and I’m attempting to get better about actually writing on it! Also on the website, I have a monthly newsletter with character interviews, contest information, and news about my books. I also post snippets from my books as well as the playlists that help inspire the writing. I also like to share books that I have read/are reading that visitors may enjoy.

8. What projects do you have planned for the future?
Book two in the Maggie Henning & The Realm series- PHOENIX BURNING, is set to release this September, so I have the final edits to go over in preparation for its launch. Book 3 is also finished and I hope to have that out early next year. I have many other little stories I’m toying with, almost all in the fantasy or paranormal genres, and I continue to work on the Phoenix books. I am also working on a short story for a charity anthology to benefit To Write Love on Her Arm, an organization that helps young girls with depression and depression related issues, something very close to my heart.

9. Is there anything else about you we should know?
I love tattoos! I find them to be pieces of living art work. I currently have nine, but I plan on growing my “collection”. I’m a mother of 3 kids and have been married to my husband for 12 years. I am also a volunteer advocate with Parent to Parent of NY State, helping families navigate their ways through the Special Education system, (I have a child on the Autism Spectrum.)

Mel's review of Dark Heirloom by J.D. Brown

Blurb"You're a vampire" is so not what Ema Marx wants to hear when she wakes from a two-day coma in acryptic yet exquisite castle in northern Finland. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like why she's able to seein the dark and walk through solid objects. What she doesn't understand is why the other vampiresexpect her to have all the answers. It's their fault she turned into one of them... right?
Jalmari's hatred for his old-man intensifies when he's ordered to bring that troublesome girl to their castle. He has a clan to run, there's no time for babysitting newborn vampires no matter how they were converted to their culture. But when a two-thousand-year-old premonition threatens to take the crown and his life, Jalmari sees no other choice than to take out the catalyst. Ema Marx. Fortunately for Ema, she could also be the clan's only savior.
The race to figure out her vampiric origins is on. And maybe she'll get the hang of the blood-drinking gig along the way...

Mel's Review I absolutely loved this book! It grabs you from the very first page and sweeps you through to the end. Ihad a hard time breaking myself away from the story to do that pesky sleeping and working thing, andcould have easily read it through in one sitting. J.D. has invented an intriguing vampire history and itcertainly made me think of gypsies in an entirely new way. I adored her characters and with the openending I'm thrilled to know there will be a second book so that I can delve a little deeper into her world. I will certainly be buying a print copy of the second book to go with the first one because this series is a  keeper. In my opinion Highly Recommended!
