Trying...
“I’m trying,” he said.
He was
trying? Trying what? I’d heard those words before, words of trying.
I wasn’t like some god damn pair of shoes that you tried on. Hmm, I tried them
on, but decided I didn’t like them. I wondered why when I fell in love, I knew,
and yet the men I loved wanted to try. If they had to try and love me, it
wasn’t enough.

No liability
Well I believe Carnival has cured me of ever wanting to cruise---no liability, really?
And today, I get to work on books, yeah!

So funny...
“What’s so funny is that you’re sleeping with
Sadie. I thought it was odd that you were there last night having a beer with
her. I took you at your word that you were checking on the tile. Then Bo’s here
this morning and I thought it was odd you hadn’t picked him up like usual. When
you walked through the gate I thought the clothes looked familiar. It was the
tennis shoes that threw me for a minute. You had your cowboy boots on at
Sadie’s,” I said.
Ryan kept petting
Bo and didn’t answer me. His expression told me everything and I laughed again.
“Oh, my god, Ryan, you’re sleeping with Sadie,”
I said again.

Little virgin
Kevin
wouldn’t brag to Mathew, in fact he wouldn’t say a word of us to anyone. I would throw it in Mathew’s face
after a severe bout of taunting from him one evening in his room. “My little virgin” he teased as our
conversation graduated again to sex. I
was surprised as I figured Kevin would have said something to him.
“Have you talked to Kevin about the
day of the pool party?” I asked.
He looked at me puzzled. I kept quiet as I watched the wheels turn.
“You and Kevin?” he asked.
He waited for me to respond.
“No?” he asked wide eyed.

V Day
It was Valentine's Day and I looked out the window at the snow falling. It felt quiet and peaceful and looked beautiful, but that wasn't what was going on inside me. Where was he? The emotion swirled within and my stomach tightened into a fine tuned knot, one I was used to by now. He'd said two days, it had been four and his cell phone was going right to voice-mail. I had called the tower and all they could tell me was they would know when he contacted them to come back over the border, while his plane was in Mexico they had no information. Where are you Trent?

Married unhappy people
“I
get it. Seems most of the single women I know have a similar opinion,” Ali
said.
“Then
there are you married unhappy people, who stay for kids, money, fear, or all of
the above. I can’t say I understand that either. I couldn’t hang around and
pretend it was working when it’s really broken. I’m happy to be single. Keep
the drama, not interested.”
“Oh,
it’s not that bad. John and I have good times occasionally. We love each other
in our own way and we both love the kids, the family. He knows I turn a blind
eye to the rumors. He’s a man for god’s sake. I think most men keep looking,
they can’t help themselves,” Ali said.

Garbage birds
We sat
on the wide steps that led down to the beach and watched the gulls. They could be quite brave in going after
food.
“Garbage birds,” Mathew said.
“Yeah, but it wouldn’t be the beach
without them,” I answered.
Bobby held out a fry and a gull with
half his foot gone waddled over and yanked it from him.
“Don’t, you’ll have them all over
here shitting on our heads,” Mathew said.
We watched the gull’s attack the
trash cans swooping in when someone dropped any piece of food. A mother with three kids set her fries
on the step while she tried to get the kids seated and a gull swooped in and
knocked the tray over flinging fries everywhere. In an instant it looked like the movie The
Birds.

Tangled webs
Holy shit, the tangled webs we weave.
“Do you see her?” I asked.
“No, haven’t in
years. She knows where to find me. If she wants to file the papers, I’ll sign
them. Until I need a reason to get it
done, there’s no hurry,” he said.
He was so matter of fact about it
that it didn’t seem strange. I wondered
if she was still in love with him, why she hadn’t pushed for a divorce. I understood now that relationships came in
all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Why?
...Why had I called? You could feel just as lonely with someone as
alone I realized. Karen found me like
that.
“You alright?” she
asked.
She sat down on
the bed next to me and put her arms around me.
I didn’t want to cry and I didn’t want to have to explain myself to
either her or Ryan.
“I want to be
alright,” I whispered.
I looked over at her confused. She squeezed me to her in a supportive way.
“I want-” I paused, fighting the emotion
welling in my throat. “Fuck, I don’t
know what I want. Let’s go.”
