"Some girls"

       He
scanned the crowd and found me, knowing I would be watching.  This must go on all the time, screamed in my
head.  He held my gaze.  I felt like he was testing me.  Maybe he was still having a relationship with
her and didn’t want to tell me.  I wanted
to run.  I flipped him the bird and waved
bye, bye as he led the band into the Rolling Stones, “Some Girls”He
shook his head no as I turned to leave.
The song could not have been more appropriate. I was just some girl,
right along with the rest.

No commitment

The breeze was light, the scent of the ocean floating on it.  I sat down on a bench and watched a fisherman
down in the rocks as boats sailed or
motored out of the harbor.  I wanted to
be in Luke’s sail naked and free, mindless.
I thought Ryan loved me but his response this morning shook me, “I like
it the way it is”.  I knew what that
meant, he liked no commitment.  I read
somewhere once that if a man didn’t want to get married it meant he didn’t want
to marry you.

Total sham

            “Probably
because you have blinders on,” Linda said.

            “I do?” Stella asked, wide-eyed.

It was Linda’s turn not to
answer.  Stella didn’t get it.  She was so wrapped up in the Greg game that
she wasn’t open to other possibilities if they did present themselves.  Whatever he had, he was obviously able to
keep her on the line.

“Stella as long as he is there for
you to fall back on, you aren’t going to put yourself out there,” Linda said.

“It’s easy for you to say, you’ve
got a good one, there’s not a lot of good single guys out there,” Stella
protested.
Linda knew that was true, but still
she couldn’t fathom why Stella put up with Greg’s lies.  He was a sham, lying over here, lying over
there.  He no doubt had numerous Stellas
scattered about.

Cowboy coffee

            “Can
we do it one more time?” I asked sleepily.

“Man, get you started kid,” he said
rolling onto me.

When I crawled in the guest bed alone his smell
lingered on me.  I liked it.  I would be foolish to expect this would push
us into anything more than what we were, but I hoped.  I finally fell into a deep sleep ad I slept late.
Everyone was up when I walked into the kitchen in my sweat pants and T-shirt.  Mathew smiled at me.  I pulled my hair back figuring it must look
wild.

“Any chance I can get some coffee?”
I asked no one in particular.

“None made,” he said.  “Your hair looks fine."

He got up and pulled the coffee pot out and filled it
part way with water.

“I can’t believe you drink the
stuff.”

“I started about thirteen.  My mom called it cowboy coffee,
lots of sugar and milk, made me feel grown up.
Less sugar and milk now,” I said.
            He laughed.

Captain Blake

        That
summer Liz and I spent most of our time around her place and Del Mar.  With school being out I had free time and I
wanted to be at the beach.  I dated Captain
Blake several more times, slept with him again without sex and could tell
without that piece, he wasn’t much interested.
I couldn’t blame him.

Social media

      Social
media had certainly changed everyone’s lives.
The whole world was on the computer, on their phones, emailing, texting,
even sex was done on both.  Magazine
distribution had gone down with the overload of information available, but not
away, as Linda had feared.  People still
wanted to take a magazine on a trip, or to the beach, and browse through it,
relax.  Hmm, brainstorm, maybe this could be an interesting angle.  She would do that after Jake left.

Good kisser

He was a really good kisser, almost
as good as Mathew I thought and stopped myself.
Someone knocked on the door and we moved into the hallway still
talking.  I saw Mathew coming down the
hall behind Sean.  Sean’s height was
blocking me so he was no doubt coming to use the restroom.  I reached up locking my arms around Sean’s
neck and leaned into him for another round of kissing.

            “Um,” I moaned softly.

Sean rested his hands on my
hips.  It took Mathew getting
right upon us to realize it was me.  I
saw him do a double take.  He grabbed my
arm and pulled me away from Sean.

Park City ski day

“You get the burgers, I’ll get the pitcher,” he
said.

I ordered two burgers with fries and gave the
cashier my name.  As I waited for our
order I leaned up against the railing watching people on the deck.  The sun was bright and it felt warm on my
face.  The Snow Hut Lodge was the
traditional A frame construction, all wood, and logs, and beams.  There wasn’t much room inside, but the deck,
now that was another story.  The deck was
large and faced the right direction for sun exposure.

“Morgan,” the cook shouted out.

Sexual tension

            “I
know you’re sleeping with him,” Linda said.

“Did Jillian tell you?” Stella asked,
not moving.

            “No, you did.”

“I did?” Stella raised her head and
stared at Linda perplexed.

            “Yes, just now.”

            Stella searched her eyes.
“I figured the two of you fell into
bed the minute you left Tommy, if not before.
You can’t have that much sexual tension build and not finally act on
it.  The flirting excuse will satisfy
some people, but not others, I never believed it would stay just flirting...
