Benny Beton promotes safety on construction sites

Nieuwe strip van onze sympathieke betonwerker Benny Beton. Als je met de betonpomp beton gaat storten, vergeet dan niet alle stempels uit te zetten! Anders gaat de vrachtwagen kantelen en van die toestanden! Dat willen we uiteraard niet meemaken!


New comic of our friend concrete worker Benny Beton. If you go pouring concrete with the concrete pump, do not forget to put out all the stabilizers. Otherwise the truck tilts and that's a situation we must avoid at all costs.

Nouvelle bande dessinée de notre ami travailleur Benny Béton. Si vous allez bétonner avec la pompe à béton, n'oubliez pas d'installer toutes les stabilisateurs. Sinon le camion s'incline et c'est une situation que nous devons éviter à tout prix.

A sketch of 1975, when I did an apprenticeship at printing company Blonde in Antwerp. At that time it was located in the Haantjeslei.

Working for improved safety in construction

Pol Pallet waakt over de veiligheid van werknemers in de bouwsecor bij het leveren van allerlei materiaal. Deze strip is één van de zestien die ik maak voor Navb-Cnac Construciv in een campagne voor meer veiligheid in de bouwsector.
Pol Pallet monitors the safety of workers in the construction sector when they're  providing all kinds of material. This comic is one of the sixteen I make for Navb-Cnac Construciv in a campaign for improved safety in the construction sector.
Pol Palette veille sur la sécurité des conducteurs en fournissant toutes sortes de matériaux. Cette bande dessinée est l'un de seize que je fais pour Navb-Cnac Construciv dans une campagne pour une plus grande sécurité dans le secteur de la construction.

Carlos Arredondo

Carlos Arredondo is een immigrant uit Costa Rica. In de chaos na de bomaanslag bij de marathon in Boston was hij alom tegenwoordig. Hulp biedend en bijstand verlenend waar hij kon. Op de tekening, die ik maakte van de indrukwekkende foto na de bomaanslag knijpt hij een ader dicht van een afgerukt been van een slachtoffer, terwijl hij hem moed inspreekt. Hij is de man met de cowboy hoed. Carlos was al langer bekend. Toen zijn zoon in 2007 in Irak sneuvelde stortte zijn wereld in. Hij ging compleet door het lint. Hij stak zichzelf in brand. Hij verbleef maanden in het ziekenhuis en besloot daarna Amerika rond te rijden in een pick-up, met enkele bezittingen van zijn zoon, een Winnie The pooh beertje en een voetbal. Het was zijn manier om tegen de oorlog te protesteren. Vier jaar later trof het noodlot hem opnieuw, toen zijn jongste zoon zelfmoord pleegde. Carlos reageerde anders dan in 2007 en zette zich integendeel in voor allerlei organisaties voor het goede doel. Hij was in Boston om een hulpgroep tegen zelfdoding aan te moedigen en voor een man, die de marathon liep ter ere van zijn overleden zoon Alexander. Door het roer drastisch om te gooien en zoveel mogelijk mensenlevens te redden werd hij de held van de natie.

Carlos Arredondo is an immigrant from Costa Rica. In the chaos after the bombing at the Boston marathon he was omnipresent. Offering help and granting assistance where he could. On the drawing I made of the impressive photo after the bombing he squeezes a vein close of a severed leg of a victim while he is speaks to him in courage. Carlos is the man with the cowboy hat. He was already a known person in the US. When his son was killed in Iraq in 2007 Carlos' world collapsed. He went completely over the edge. He set himself on fire. He spent months in the hospital to recover. Having left the hospital he then decided to drive around America in a pickup, with some possessions of his son, a Winnie the Pooh bear and a football. It was his way of protesting against the war. Four years later, fate struck him again, when his youngest son committed suicide. Carlos responded differently than in 2007 and committed himself to various organizations for charity. He was in Boston to encourage a support group against suicide and to meet a man who ran the marathon in honor of his deceased son Alexander. By changing drastically his direction and saving as much lives as possible he became the hero of the nation.

Stripje van rond 1975. Over een "manneke" dat naar een tentoonstelling gaat. Helaas ben ik toen niet verder gekomen dan deze twee prentjes en daarbij wat schetsen en losse ideetjes.
Little comic story from around 1975. A "little man" goes to an exhibition. Unfortunately I did not get any further than these two pictures and some loose sketches and ideas.

Bande dessinée d'environ 1975. Un "petit homme" va à une exposition. Malheureusement, je n'ai pas plus fait que ces deux images et ainsi quelques croquis et des idées.

1976 moet een uitzonderlijk creatief jaar voor me zijn geweest. Ziehier de cover van Politiek Alternatief, een links blad waarvan William Van Laeken de hoofdredacteur was. Van de paar vergaderingen die ik met de redactie had herinner ik me alleen dat hij een pijp rookte.
Pou moi 1976 était apparemment une année exceptionnellement créative. Voici la couverture de "Politiek Alternatief", un magazine de gauche dont William Van Laeken était rédacteur en chef. Parmi les quelques rencontres que j'ai eues avec les rédacteurs je me souviens seulement qu'il fumait une pipe.
Apparently 1976 was an exceptional creative year for me. Here is the cover of "Politiek Alternatief, a leftist magazine directed by William Van Laeken as editor in chief. Of the few meetings I had with the editors I remember only that he smoked a pipe.
