Carlos Arredondo

Carlos Arredondo is een immigrant uit Costa Rica. In de chaos na de bomaanslag bij de marathon in Boston was hij alom tegenwoordig. Hulp biedend en bijstand verlenend waar hij kon. Op de tekening, die ik maakte van de indrukwekkende foto na de bomaanslag knijpt hij een ader dicht van een afgerukt been van een slachtoffer, terwijl hij hem moed inspreekt. Hij is de man met de cowboy hoed. Carlos was al langer bekend. Toen zijn zoon in 2007 in Irak sneuvelde stortte zijn wereld in. Hij ging compleet door het lint. Hij stak zichzelf in brand. Hij verbleef maanden in het ziekenhuis en besloot daarna Amerika rond te rijden in een pick-up, met enkele bezittingen van zijn zoon, een Winnie The pooh beertje en een voetbal. Het was zijn manier om tegen de oorlog te protesteren. Vier jaar later trof het noodlot hem opnieuw, toen zijn jongste zoon zelfmoord pleegde. Carlos reageerde anders dan in 2007 en zette zich integendeel in voor allerlei organisaties voor het goede doel. Hij was in Boston om een hulpgroep tegen zelfdoding aan te moedigen en voor een man, die de marathon liep ter ere van zijn overleden zoon Alexander. Door het roer drastisch om te gooien en zoveel mogelijk mensenlevens te redden werd hij de held van de natie.

On the drawing I made of the impressive photo after the bombing he squeezes a vein close of a severed leg of a victim while he is speaks to him in courage. Carlos is the man with the cowboy hat. He was already a known person in the US. When his son was killed in Iraq in 2007 Carlos' world collapsed. He went completely over the edge. He set himself on fire. He spent months in the hospital to recover. Having left the hospital he then decided to drive around America in a pickup, with some possessions of his son, a Winnie the Pooh bear and a football. It was his way of protesting against the war. Four years later, fate struck him again, when his youngest son committed suicide. Carlos responded differently than in 2007 and committed himself to various organizations for charity. He was in Boston to encourage a support group against suicide and to meet a man who ran the marathon in honor of his deceased son Alexander. By changing drastically his direction and saving as much lives as possible he became the hero of the nation.
