A Moment of Clarity
[image error]
I’ve been feeling a lot like Linus in that cartoon lately. I love mankind but I hate Trump. I hate Republicans. I hate white supremacists. I hate the Christians who hate me. I’ve been walking around with a very heavy, hate-filled heart ever since 11/9.
I hate hate. I want to get it out my heart, out of my life. But I didn’t have the slightest idea how to do that.
Then I saw a facebook friend of mine write on his status: “If you want clarity, go for a walk in the woods for three months.”
The...

White Boy Privilege
Saxon and I went to the gym today. We go at least five days a week. We use the gym at the college that’s only a couple of blocks from our house. We’re lucky that they let community members use the facilities because it’s a really nice place with great equipment. One of the first things I noticed about this gym is that there are rape posters hung everywhere—telling women to be careful, always use the buddy system, etc.
The only drawback to the gym is that we’re surrounded by young white guys,...

Be Like a Dog
I don’t really like reviews. I don’t read reviews before I buy a book. I don’t really care what other people have to say about a book. I want to make up my own mind.
I remember reading as a kid. It was a wonderful experience for me. I would open a book and be transported to another reality. I loved every book I read. Let me say that again: I LOVED EVERY BOOK I READ.
It wasn’t until I began writing books for a living that I found out some people read books and don’t like them. It blew my mind...

Are You a Racist?
Here’s a simple test to find out if you’re a racist. Answer the following questions:
Are you alive?
Are you breathing?
Is your heart beating?
If you answer yes to any of those questions then you are a racist.
I once visited the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. At the entrance to the museum were two doors. One door was marked “Enter here if you are not racist.” The other door was marked “Enter here if you are racist.”
I, of course, headed for the ‘not racist’ door. It was locked. I had to...

THE FIRST FOUR DAYS
Written by my wife and co-author, Saxon Bennett.
Election night was terrifying. We all saw it happen, but no one saw it coming. This is how it went down with me:
My heart pounded as the votes started coming in. Hillary-3, Trump-19. I looked over at Layce. “Should I be freaking?
“No. See all those states,” Layce said, pointing at the map on the television. “Those are hers.”
I watched as she lost more states to the red devils.
“She’s losing Florida,” Layce said, chewing on her fin...

Be Kind
My daughter’s high school seniors always have a motto. It’s supposed to be something to encourage them once they graduate and enter the real world.
This year the motto is “Be Kind.”
That’s all. Be Kind.
I was blown away by the simplicity of this motto. It says it all, doesn’t it?
If everyone were to follow the wisdom of these two tiny words, the world would be a much different place. There would be no mocking of the disabled. No throwing away of women and children. No harsh jokes about people...

Sexual Assault
When my daughter was a toddler I taught her to never let any man touch her private places. Anywhere her bathing suit covered was off limits. Even doctors were not allowed to touch her unless I was in the room with her.
I taught her to always use the buddy system with another girl. To never go anywhere unless she was with another girl.
I taught her to never be alone with a boy.
I taught her how to knee a boy in the crotch if he tried to hurt her.
I taught her how to stick her thumbs in a man’s...

Bookbub is now offering our book, Crazy Little Thing, for the crazy low price of only 99 cents!
Our second book, Crazy Little Thing, has always held a special place in our hearts. Saxon and I hatched the plot for this book on our way back from getting married in Iowa. But the idea for the book actually began the month before when Saxon proposed to me.
At the time, Saxon was working as a letter carrier for the Post Office. She called me on the phone during her lunch and said, “I think we shoul...
